Do You Understand Tariffs?

I hope you’ve all had an outstanding 4th of July. If you did any grilling, you felt the impact inflation has had on the staples, a condition that’s unlikely to change until we give the Green New Deal a rest and focus on implementing strategies that make sense.

In this shoot the shit we’ll talk about tariffs, how they function and some of the pros and cons. This will be a non-technical discussion, so you won’t feel like you need to spend time on the couch of a jackass who majored in psychology so they can understand themselves.

For those new to the concept of a shoot the shit, it is a social interaction during which any subject is discussed, participants don’t need to know anything about the topic, they can make any unsupported comment, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject at will.

So, let’s get started…

A tariff is a trade barrier imposed on imports to protect domestic markets. Unlike what you may have thought, the exporter, or their country, does not pay the tariff, it is paid by the importer, and results in a higher cost to manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers. So, if you manufacture widgets and need to import 1/4-20 screws from a supplier in a tariffed country, your production cost will be higher due to the imposed tariff. You’ll look for a lower cost source, if one is available, or you’ll subsequently sell your widget at a higher price to recover cost.

Tariff policy is a Congressional responsibility but delegated to the Executive Branch where it is administered by the International Trade Administration. US Customs and Border Protection Service is responsible for collecting the tariff.

A tariff has the following impacts:

1. The tariff imposed on the 1/4-20 screws makes the imported screw more expensive than a domestically produced screw, or one imported from a country that’s not tariffed
2. To protect its markets, the tariffed country could devalue its currency, which is what China does readily, or tries to position itself as a sole supplier. China is actively working to achieve that goal across several critical sectors.
3. The impact of tariffs falls on the consumer. The consumer has three options:
  1. They can substitute – which means substituting the higher priced widget with a dumaflache.
  2. They can altogether forgo buying the widget if it’s not essential, which has a deleterious impact on the overall economy.
  3. If the widget is a necessity and there are no acceptable substitutes, the consumer pays the higher price.

On the aggregate, United States tariffs average about 2% of the total product value. In most cases, the United State does not impose import tariffs; however, due to aggressive Chinese trade policies, the United States currently imposes a 25 percent tariff on approximately $250 billion of imports from China, and a 7.5 percent tariff on approximately $112 billion worth of imports from China. (Note, tariffs are based on product types, so a screw may be tariffed at 7.5% and an electronic chip may be tariffed at 25%.)

On May 10th, the government issued the draft of Revision 3 (Rev3). Rev3 is denser than its predecessor and adds three new domains. It is better written, clearer, and often more concise; however, while the number of requirements remained the same, NIST renumbered and stacked multiple items into a single control/security requirement, resulting in what appears to be a net increase for 3rd Party assessments. Formerly named Fort Hood, Fort Cavazos is the US Army’s premier installation to train and deploy heavy forces and is the only base in the US capable of stationing and training two armored divisions.

Lexington, KY (July 2023) – U.S. Patriot, a GALLS® company, and one of the largest military suppliers of uniforms, boots, and gear, will be rolling into Fort Cavazos for a July 9th event at the base exchange, located at the Clear Creek Exchange, Bldg. 4250 Clear Creek Blvd.

Academy of Doctors of Audiology Supports Suppressor Deregulation

The Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA), an independent medical group that focuses on evidence-based practices in the delivery of audio-vestibular care, has circulated a letter to Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC-03) and Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) supporting the deregulation of suppressors through the Hearing Protection Act. Their rationale is simple: suppressors are a tool that can help prevent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and other hearing damage.

“As an independent medical group, the Academy of Doctors of Audiology has absolutely no vested interest in suppressors outside of the positive impact that they have on hearing conservation,” said Knox Williams, Executive Director of the American Suppressor Association. “Their endorsement of the Hearing Protection Act, which would give law-abiding citizens improved access to suppressors, highlights the importance of these tools when it comes to firearms safety. We applaud ADA for putting this letter together and actively supporting hearing conservation.”

SHELTON, Conn — The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute®, Inc., (SAAMI ®) has announced the acceptance of a new shotshell and rimfire cartridge for SAAMI standardization. SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability, and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components.

28-Gauge 3” – The 28-Gauge 3” was introduced by Olin Winchester with three loadings: 1⅛ oz. lead shot traveling at a velocity of 1,200 fps, ¾ oz. non-lead shot traveling at a velocity of 1,350 fps, and 1 oz. non-lead shot traveling at a velocity of 1,300 fps, all at a Maximum Average Pressure of 14,000 psi.

21 Sharp – The 21 Sharp rimfire cartridge was introduced by Olin Winchester with a 25-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 1,725 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 24,000 psi.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, recognizes Ammunition Depot for its continued support of NSSF’s First Shots® program.

Founded in 2011, Ammunition Depot is one of the largest online retailers and nationwide suppliers of ammunition, firearms, firearm accessories and tactical gear in the United States. Ammunition Depot for several years has served as the ammunition-fulfillment storage center for the First Shots program. In this capacity, Ammunition Depot stores, processes orders, and ships all ammunition to First Shots host ranges. The services provided by Ammunition Depot are valued at $20,000 annually in support of First Shots.

Surveys show that more than 43 percent of First Shots participants are converted to target-shooting enthusiasts who individually spend on average more than $600 annually on their shooting sports endeavors.
