GA-ASI COMPLETES DURABILITY TEST FOR HFE 2.0 ENGINE

200-HP Heavy Fuel Engine Will Be Used for New Gray Eagle 25M

SAN DIEGO – 29 May 2024 – On May 16, 2024, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) completed durability testing for its new 200-horsepower heavy fuel engine at its El Mirage, California, flight facility. The Heavy Fuel Engine (HFE) 2.0, featuring a new GA-ASI-designed gear box and dual brushless generators from General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS), is designed to bring the engine and all ancillary components to 2,500 hours between scheduled overhauls and greatly increase maintenance-free operational periods.

“Our HFE 2.0 engine is now the best heavy fuel engine in aviation,” said GA-ASI President David R. Alexander. “Hats off to our Internal Research and Development team whose ingenuity and technical sophistication inspired the HFE 2.0 program, allowing us to develop a more reliable and durable engine that also addresses diminishing manufacturing sources for aviation heavy fuel engines and components.”

The final durability test simulated a full 2,500-hour engine life operating the highest flight loads that could ever be seen in the field. The test included conditions simulating 1,250 full power take-offs and climbs to high-cruising altitude, and over 200 hours of cruise in a worst-case generator loading conditions.

The HFE 2.0 engine is being considered by the U.S. Army to become the fleet replacement for the current 180-horsepower engine used on GA-ASI’s Gray Eagle Extended Range (GE ER) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). HFE 2.0 is also the cornerstone of the modernized Gray Eagle 25M (GE 25M) UAS currently being produced under a U.S. Army-funded program to support future Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) UAS missions.

GA-ASI and its affiliate General Atomics Europe partnered with global leaders in high-performance engines — supported by propulsion technology innovator Cosworth — to develop an engine with increased horsepower, durability, and reliability. GA-ASI also brought in GA-EMS to design and build the engine’s dual brushless generators, which will dramatically reduce field maintenance and with the same Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) of the existing brushed generator, will deliver over 50 percent more electrical power for new payloads and mission capabilities.

Final 150-hour qualification testing is scheduled to be completed in September followed by certification from the U.S. Army.

The event’s theme will be a focus on how DOD and industry can partner to move emerging technologies into production and operational use to address high priority defense and security challenges. The event will include high level keynote speakers, breakout sessions with expert panels, technical posters and presentations by subject matter experts, networking sessions, and feature the latest innovation and emerging technologies in an expansive exhibit hall.

ARC is an industry-first event that will test teams of competitors’ skills in archery, marksmanship, observation, and target detection on a course designed by world champion and Team SIG Professional Shooter Daniel Horner, with a $50,000 grand prize donation to the winning team’s charity of choice.

The Inaugural Rifle Challenge Invitational consists of two-days of competition on a 5-mile Daniel Horner designed course with seven required stages each day. Ehea Scheurch from Washington State has worked as a Corrections Officer for eight years and has been a Defensive Tactics Instructor for about six of those eight years. She has been a member of the CRT team for two years and is the only female in the history of her department to make the team. Having been a competitive athlete for her entire life, Scheurch joined The Tactical Games in 2022 and has placed on the podium nine out of nine times with two second-place finishes at the National Championship.

Zach Rodman is a Police Officer/SWAT from Indiana. He became involved in The Tactical Games after seeing it on Instagram and hearing about it from a guest speaker at a SWAT Round-Up. When he competes, he has a standard goal to honor the investments that his parents, coaches, and friends have made for him.

Jacob Horton hails from North Carolina. He is a Police Officer, SWAT Team Leader, and avid hunter. He has been competing in The Tactical Games since 2019. His goal for 2024 is to finish in the Top Five at the National Championship.

Nathan Drumm served in the Marine Corps from 2001 – 2005 as a Combat Engineer at 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Camp Pendelton, California. He then transitioned to the Marine Reserves in New Orleans as a Radio Operator until 2010. He joined the Baton Rouge Fire Department in 2008 and then went into the Fire Investigators Division as a Commissioned Fire/Arson Investigator. Most recently he went back to the fire truck to serve as a Firefighter. He has been competing in The Tactical Games since 2019 in the Elite Division. He now competes in the Masters Division.

Blayr Drumm is a Louisiana native who is a regular competitor in The Tactical Games. Additionally, she competes regularly in CrossFit competitions at the local, regional, and national levels. Her favorite activities include working out and shooting guns. Her goal is to inspire other women to be strong and independent through her dedication to fitness and marksmanship.
