For decades, engineers have improved 5.56 NATO performance by refining the rifle with stronger materials, more durable barrels, improved suppressors, and increasingly efficient operating systems. But recently the cartridge itself has become the focus of efforts to optimize the platform.
Rather than operating within the pressure range associated with conventional 5.56 NATO ammunition, experimental high-pressure loads are designed to safely generate greater chamber pressures through advances in cartridge construction, propellant technology, or both.
