WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, Monday February 3rd, Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), joined by 25 cosponsors in the Senate, reintroduced the ASA-supported Hearing Protection Act in the Senate as S.364.

This introduction builds on the momentum of pro-2nd Amendment and pro-suppressor legislation introduced in the 119th Congress. Recently, Representative Ben Cline (R-Virginia) introduced the House of Representatives version of the Hearing Protection Act. Both bills would remove suppressors from the burdensome requirements of the National Firearms Act (NFA) and require purchasers to pass an instant NICS check, the same background check used during the sale of long guns. This change, by cutting through red tape, will make it much easier for law-abiding hunters and sportsmen to access these critical hearing safety devices. The ASA fully endorses both of these bills and looks forward to seeing their passage through both chambers of Congress.

In addition, last week, Representatives August Pfluger (R-Texas) and Jared Golden (D-Maine) introduced the PARTS Act, which is a bipartisan proposal aimed at reforming the outdated definition of “firearm silencer” under the Gun Control Act.

NSSF Welcomes U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo’s Hearing Protection Act Introduction

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF^®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, welcomes U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo’s (R-Idaho) S. 364, the Hearing Protection Act, which would remove firearm suppressors from the list of definitions under the 1934 National Firearms Act (NFA), eliminating onerous and duplicitous background checks. Instead, what is essentially a muffler for a gun would continue to be regulated under the 1968 Gun Control Act (GCA) with the same background check that is required for a retail firearm purchase. The legislation would also amend the statutory suppressor definitions to eliminate ambiguity that might lead to the criminalization of lawful firearm accessories.

“Senator Mike Crapo’s Hearing Protection Act will have the federal government recognize firearm suppressors as accessories to a firearm that make recreational shooting and hunting a safer experience,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “These safety devices reduce the report of a firearm to a level that won’t cause instant and permanent hearing damage. Despite Hollywood’s depictions, they do not silence the sound of a firearm. The focus should be on removing barriers to safe and responsible use of firearms and dedicating resources to ensuring actual firearms are safeguarded from those who should never possess them. Strict regulatory control of firearm accessories, and the parts of those accessories that have no bearing on the function of a firearm, is unnecessary and not the wisest use of federal resources. NSSF thanks Senator Crapo for his leadership for ensuring safe and responsible use of firearms and dedicating necessary resources where they are most needed.”

Firearm suppressors, legally but inaccurately referred to as “silencers,” are devices that reduce the report of a firearm from a level roughly equal to that of a jet taking off which causes instant and permanent hearing loss to one that is safe, but still equal to a jackhammer. That decibel level will not permanently damage hearing. Suppressors work similar to a car’s muffler, redirecting exhaust gases and was originally patented over 100 years ago by the same designer of car mufflers, Hiram Maxim.

Under current law, an individual purchasing a suppressor must locate a retailer that is regulated as a NFA Class III retailer, complete a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Form 4 with the model and serial number of the suppressor, and obtain two passport photos and fingerprint cards from a local police department. The local chief law enforcement official must receive a completed copy of the application. Then the form, photographs and fingerprints must be sent to ATF along with a check to pay the $200 tax. The customer can obtain the suppressor from the NFA Class III retailer upon an additional background check through FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

Sen. Crapo’s legislation would eliminate those requirements and make suppressors available with the same paperwork, markings, record keeping and background check approval that is required for a firearm. It would also clarify the definition of suppressors, ensuring that components like mounts, baffles and end caps are not erroneously classified as standalone suppressors or “silencers.”

Similar legislation, with the same title, was introduced as H.R. 404 in the U.S House of Representatives by Congressman Ben Cline (R-Va.).

Part of Galco’s Concealed Carry Lite™ line of holsters, the WalkAbout™ 3.0 offers all the benefits of the WalkAbout 2.0 – and also fits most carry-style optical sights! It’s an exceptional combination of high performance, comfort and affordability.

The WalkAbout 3.0’s open top allows a very fast draw, while the reinforced mouth allows a smooth and easy return of the gun to the holster. The WalkAbout 3.0’s belt clips are adjustable for cant, making it suitable for the strongside, crossdraw, or appendix carry positions.

The WalkAbout 3.0’s attached magazine carrier has a more pronounced angle than previous versions. This angle allows pistols with most carry-style red-dot optics to clear the spare magazine’s floorplate when drawing and has the secondary benefit of allowing a faster draw of the magazine when reloading, especially from the appendix carry position.

The ambidextrous WalkAbout 3.0 is supplied with two types of interchangeable tuckable clips. The first is the UniClip™, designed to go over the belt, but which also works well without a belt. The second is the Ultimate Stealth™ clip with hook, which fits on the trouser waistband, under or behind a belt with just the hook showing, for the ultimate in stealthy concealment!

Introducing a uniquely designed ambidextrous grip module, the aluminum SHARP BROS grip module for the P365. This grip mod features a traditional look with Brazilian Cherry wood grip panels, a sleek anodized black finish that offers durability for both time spent at the range and everyday carry and a machined checkering design that provides a stronger grip at all times.

The trigger guard design includes a well-defined undercut, allowing for improved grip comfort and control. SHARP BROS has integrated a Gas Pedal® on both sides of the frame, aiding left- and right-handed shooters with recoil management. The slightly flared magwell enhances smooth reloading between magazines. A standard 1913 Picatinny accessory rail enabling you to mount your favorite FOXTROT light.

P365 Grip Mod/Holster Combo from Juggernaut Tactical

The JT P365 Grip Module is machined from billet aluminum, featuring an improved shape and sleek design. It includes a flared magwell for smoother reloading as well as integrated thumb rests on both sides, providing improved control for both left and right-handed shooters. Additionally, the grip mod accommodates for a magazine disconnect and manual safety.

Also included is a custom ambidextrous inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster from McKinaTec to ensure proper fit for the larger grip module, as well as (2) 10-round XL base plates. Available for 9mm and 380.

SHELTON, Conn.—The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute,^®Inc., (SAAMI^®) has announced the acceptance of three new rifle cartridges for SAAMI standardization. SAAMI is the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition and components.

7mm Backcountry – The 7mm Backcountry (7mm BC) was introduced by Federal Premium Ammunition (The Kinetic Group) with a 170-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 3,000 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 80,000 psi.
25 Creedmoor – The 25 Creedmoor (25 CM) was introduced by Hornady Manufacturing Company with a 134-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 2,810 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 62,000 psi.
338 Advanced Rifle Cartridge – The 338 Advanced Rifle Cartridge (338 ARC) was introduced by Hornady Manufacturing Company with a 175-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 2,050 fps and a Maximum Average Pressure of 52,000 psi.
