GA-ASI TEAM MEMBERS RECEIVE AIAA SAN DIEGO SECTION AWARDS
SAN DIEGO – 29 May 2025 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is thrilled to salute its team members who were recognized by the San Diego section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) with awards for outstanding achievement. GA-ASI engineers and program teams were awarded for outstanding achievement in aerospace management, aerospace engineering, aerospace organization, and lifetime achievement. The awards were presented at an event hosted by the AIAA on May 3, 2025.
GA-ASI is a leading employer in the San Diego area and manufacturer of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), radars, and electro-optic and related mission systems solutions.

AIAA award winners from GA-ASI:
Mike Connolly was awarded for outstanding contribution to aerospace management. As a senior program manager for GA-ASI’s Leasing Services, Mr. Connolly consistently displays his mastery of customer service and product knowledge, which has earned him high praise from GA-ASI’s international customers, particularly the Indian Navy. He is also known and respected for his innovative thinking, which has contributed greatly to the growth of GA-ASI’s leasing business.
In the category of outstanding contribution to aerospace engineering, GA-ASI Vice President of Hardware Engineering Dan Stenger was awarded. From 2021-2023, Mr. Stenger played a critical leadership role in the test program for the United Kingdom’s Protector UAS for MQ-9B System Verification. In that capacity, he led the engineering oversight and integration efforts that ultimately culminated in the successful fielding of the first customer delivered MQ-9B model UAS from GA-ASI. This achievement not only marked a milestone in GA-ASI’s global partnerships but also reflected Mr. Stenger’s ability to guide international programs to success through rigorous testing and compliance with complex regulatory frameworks, and seamless coordination with multinational stakeholders.
GA-ASI’s Sonobuoy Dispensing System Team was awarded for outstanding achievement by an aerospace organization. GA-ASI recently developed a ground-breaking Sonobuoy Dispensing System (SDS) as part of a first-ever Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability for the MQ-9B SeaGuardian®. This marked the first sonobuoy deployment capability for an unmanned aircraft. Since its first safe-separation and end-to-end dispensing flight test, SDS stands as a testament to GA-ASI’s commitment to advancing force-multiplying solutions for maritime and multi-domain operations.
Last but certainly not least, GA-ASI’s James (Jim) Machin was awarded for lifetime achievement. With a career that spans over four decades, Mr. Machin has pushed the boundaries of UAS technology and capability, leaving an indelible mark on the field. His tenure at GA-ASI is a testament to his extraordinary contributions, visionary leadership, and exceptional achievements. Mr. Machin was among the original seven employees who formed what would become GA-ASI in 1991. After managing the Flight Test Facility and Composite Design and Manufacturing departments, he led GA-ASI’s Research and Development organization, responsible for airframe design and prototype manufacturing. In this capacity, Mr. Machin executed numerous groundbreaking projects, including the development of key platforms such as the Predator®, Reaper®, and Avenger®. He has been a driving force behind numerous UAS projects, serving as the principal engineer for aircraft design on over 20 different aircraft platforms.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, is reminding gun owners and their families to check on their firearm storage practices during Gun Storage Check Week®, the national firearm safety awareness week that runs Sunday, June 1, through Saturday, June 7. During that week and beyond, the message of “Make Sure It’s Secure™” is highlighted to help prevent unwanted access to firearms.
“Securely storing guns when they’re not in use saves lives—it’s really that simple,” said Joe Bartozzi, President and CEO of NSSF. “No one wants their gun in the hands of an unsupervised child, a person in crisis, someone who does not understand how to safely operate firearms or a thief. If something bad happens because your gun isn’t stored securely, you’ll regret it, probably forever.”
To emphasize the importance of securely storing guns when not in use, visitors to gunstoragecheck.org will have the opportunity to enter the Gun Storage Check Week Sweepstakes beginning May 30 to win gun safes and other prizes each week in June. Those who enter can improve their chances of winning by gaining bonus entries for watching a firearm safety video.
The goal of Gun Storage Check Week, which is observed during National Safety Month, is to help prevent firearm accidents, especially those involving children, suicides and thefts. “Hiding a gun on top of a refrigerator, a closet shelf or under a car seat is no substitute for secure, locked storage,” Bartozzi said. “Take a moment to check how you’re keeping your guns safe from unwanted to access. If you need to make improvements, we have suggestions for storage devices that will fit your lifestyle.”
Bartozzi said storage devices are available to meet the needs of all gun owners—from those who value readiness for personal and home protection to hunters and recreational shooters who own many firearms that need to be responsibly stored when not in use. The GunStorageCheck.org website provides resources to help gun owners decide which locked storage device can best meet their safety and accessibility needs.

· lock boxes—a storage solution for guns kept for home security and in vehicles
· lockable gun cases—for security and portability

Secure Storage Can Prevent Suicide
NSSF is dedicated to helping reduce firearm-related suicide by distributing educational resources through its Have a Brave Conversation program. Each year more than half of all firearm-related fatalities are suicide deaths, and among veterans the rate tops 72 percent.
“Suicide is preventable,” said Bartozzi. “Gun owners and their families can save lives by becoming more open to discussing factors that contribute to suicide risk and by preventing access to firearms when someone is at risk. Supporting someone who is struggling and being respectful of the right to own firearms can go together.”
When a person in crisis cannot access a firearm, a vital pause occurs that allows time for the immediate thoughts on suicide to pass and connecting to care and support. It’s a pause that can save a life. Temporarily storing a firearm outside the home can be a solution, but remember to follow all applicable firearm transfer laws.
Pride in Safety
“The firearm-owning community makes firearm safety a priority at home, on the range and in the field,” said Bartozzi. “We should all do our part to prevent accidents and other misuse. Gun Storage Check Week is a good time to focus on proper storage of firearms at home and in vehicles.”
Free cable gun locks are available in thousands of communities across the country through NSSF’s Project ChildSafe program in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

A recent cyber breach involving the government-grade messaging platform TeleMessage has revealed that dozens of U.S. federal officials were unknowingly swept up in the incident, potentially exposing sensitive metadata and communication patterns, according to a new report by Reuters. The platform, used by various government agencies to archive secure messages, was compromised earlier this month in an attack that now appears broader than initially reported.
Originally highlighted due to its use by former National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, the breach was later confirmed to have affected over 60 verified government users, including officials from disaster response teams, diplomatic staff, customs officers, members of the U.S. Secret Service, and more. The intercepted messages, reviewed by Reuters, spanned roughly a 24-hour period ending May 4. While the content itself appeared fragmented and largely benign, the exposure of metadata, such as user identities, communication times, and group affiliations, presents a significant counterintelligence risk.
TeleMessage, a service designed to adapt consumer messaging apps like Signal for secure, compliant government use, allows message archiving to meet federal recordkeeping regulations. It was suspended on May 5 following the breach.
Though the content of many leaked messages did not appear overtly sensitive, certain threads referenced the travel logistics of senior officials and events involving the President. For example, one group labeled “POTUS | ROME-VATICAN | PRESS GC” likely coordinated a high-level visit abroad. Other conversations mentioned U.S. activity in Jordan.
The greater concern, experts warn, lies not in the specific message content but in the detailed metadata now accessible to threat actors, revealing who is communicating with whom, and when—critical information for mapping operational patterns or targeting individuals.
In the wake of the breach, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a recommendation to discontinue use of the platform until further security measures are clarified.

(SST), a leading innovator in the ammunition industry, is proud to share new analysis demonstrating a major operational advantage for Black Hawk helicopter missions using its NAS3 casings and lightweight ammo belt links. The data reveals that replacing traditional brass-cased ammo with SST’s innovative NAS3 casings can reduce the ammo load weight by nearly 300 lbs. – or enable U.S. and allied forces to carry thousands of additional rounds without exceeding payload limits.
According to a recently released analyst report, the standard ammo loadout for a Black Hawk helicopter includes approximately 7,000 rounds of 7.62mm and 1,200 rounds of .50 caliber ammunition. When loaded with traditional brass and standard M13 links, the combined weight is roughly 1,022 lbs. SST’s lightweight solution cuts that to 723 lbs. – a 299 lb. reduction.

Becoming A Collegiate Competition Shooter: Emily Miller
In this three-part series, we explore the journey of three young women, from their humble beginnings in the early part of their shooting careers, to getting serious on the competition circuit and getting scouted, to picking the best school to fit their desired goals. These young women balance a heavy college curriculum with a rigorous team schedule and make the most of their time as collegiate athletes. Whether you are looking to follow a similar path and compete in college, or just curious to learn more about this world, follow along as we delve into the stories of these Syren athletes and their unique journeys.
First up in our series is one of Syren’s newest ambassadors, Emily Miller. Emily is currently a student at Fort Hays State University. Her main discipline is sporting clays, and when she’s not balancing her schoolwork while earning her degree, she enjoys going to as many NSCA (National Sporting Clays Association) tournaments as she can. Emily has earned a number of accolades since beginning to shoot competitively in 2018, including winning numerous Lady Championships in Sporting Clays, FITASC, American Field Sporting, 5 Stand and earning a spot on the All-American Junior 1st Team in 2022. On the collegiate level, Emily is just as fierce, taking HOA (High Overall) and Lady Championships at several competitions across the country during her first three seasons.

I’ve made the comment, “If you can’t see it, you can’t shoot it,” no less than a million times. The shooting sports revolve around your ability to SEE a target and put the sight picture together correctly. Now, there was an astonishing young lady that was legally blind and shooting for a high school team. She and the coach worked together on having her zero in on a sound played from behind the target to assist her in aiming. It worked! This scenario is on the other end of the spectrum though and brought to your attention to showcase just how incredible we are as a species.

Barrett and MARS Inc. team win U.S. Army xTech Soldier Lethality Competition with revolutionary 30mm Precision Grenadier System
MURFREESBORO, TN – The U.S. Army has announced that the MARS Inc, Barrett team has been selected as the winner of the xTech Soldier Lethality competition. In six months, this team of agile businesses were able to design, build, test, and demonstrate the effectiveness of a new 30mm grenade rifle system in support of the Army’s Precision Grenadier System (PGS) requirement. PGS is a soldier portable, shoulder fired, semi-automatic, magazine fed, integrated armament system (weapon, ammunition, fire control) that enables rapid, precision engagements to destroy personnel targets in defilade and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) targets at close range. Both companies are proud to have the opportunity to provide this unique capability to the U.S. and allied war fighters.

The xTech program was an incredible demonstration of the strength and capabilities of the Barrett team to collaborate with likeminded companies to achieve what many thought unachievable in the given timeframe. As part of that journey, Barrett worked closely with small business innovator MARS Inc to bring their technology to life, AMTEC Corp to develop an entirely new family of 30mm shoulder fired munitions, and Precision Targeting to provide a fire control system customized for the AMTEC ammunition. This new ammunition family will have the full spectrum of capabilities required to achieve the US Army’s mission to provide overmatch on the modern battlefield. This includes, Programmable Air Bursting High Explosive (HE), Proximity Fuzed and Point Detonating HE, as well as a Close Quarter Battle Round.
