Extrema Ratio Pugio – Classic and Timeless

This month, I had the opportunity to review one of the best, if not the best, execution of a combat dagger, Extrema Ratio’s Pugio.

I also have a great love for the Roman era Gladius, its longer brethren the Gladius Hispaniensis, and the Roman pugnale known as the Pugio, which was used as a side arm by Roman soldiers.

The need for a military sidearm has existed since Roman Legions marched across Europe establishing an Empire that lasted well over 1000 years. That same need exists today for our fighting men and women. And, where a carbine and pistol will fail you, a combat knife will not. It is this mindset that drove the design of Extrema’s Pugio.

Revision Military Announces Military-Grade Photochromic Eyewear System

Essex Junction, VT, USA (January 11, 2012) – Revision Military, the world leader in protective soldier solutions, introduces the Sawfly Photochromic Eyewear System. Featuring Revision’s rapid light-changing technology, first introduced in its Hellfly Ballistic Sunglasses, the ballistic photochromic Sawfly lens automatically darkens to a sunglass tint when exposed to sunlight and returns to its clear state in the absence of UV rays, providing a tactical edge in rapidly changing environments.

“Revision’s photochromic lens technology not only eliminates the need to switch lenses when transitioning between the indoors and outside, but also automatically adjusts to compensate for varying outdoor light levels allowing the end user to focus on his mission, not his eyepro,” commented Jonathan Blanshay, CEO of Revision. Revision’s Photochromic Sawfly lens takes only 60 seconds to change from its darkest state to almost clear, while most competitors’ lenses take more than twice as long to do the same. From the clear state to a light-grey lens tint capable of blocking sun glare, it takes only 20 seconds. “For military and tactical operators, faster photochromic lens change means enhanced visual performance when it’s most needed – in dynamic environments.”

True to the entire Sawfly line, the new Sawfly Photochromic Eyewear System exceeds ANSI Z87.1-2010 and U.S. military ballistic impact requirements for spectacles (MIL-PRF-31013 clause 3.5.1.1) while providing flawless optics and 100% UV protection. The Revision Sawfly Photochromic Basic Kit retails for $149.99 and the lens is interchangeable across the entire Sawfly line. The Photochromic system is prescription ready with Revision’s optional Rx Carrier; it’s also available in three sizes to ensure fit, comfort and optical performance. The system will be available for purchase in March 2012.

SETPOINT AMMUNITION – Custom Precision Ammunition

Tactical and precision shooters have known for quite some time that precision shooting systems are only as good as their four major components: rifle, optics, ammunition and shooter. Finding the right ammunition to optimize weapon performance lead many professionals to develop their own loads. So, when we heard about this young new company, SETPOINT AMMUNITION, we were extremely excited. You see, SETPOINT Ammunition, is not your regular off the shelf suit designer. They are unique in that they deliver premium fodder for your weapon system that you, the shooter or builder, design.

Read our upcoming review as we take to the range to give SETPOINT’s product a try. I have a sneaky suspicion that precision marksmen will be beating a path to their door!

Effects Of The Arab Spring On The Defense Sector.

The emotional and controversial adjustments to our national defense priorities along with budgetary pressures have been of concern to the Defense Industry, not just in the United States but across the globe; leaving the industry looking towards the Middle East for sustainment. However, what were once economies with double-digit compounded annual growth rates will most likely pass on significant defense spending until those economies have recovered. Single digit growth in defense spending in the region will, baring unforeseen circumstances, remain uncharacteristically low into the foreseeable future. With exception of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the more stable states, the rest of Northern Africa will not be available to save the day. If the industry is to remain viable COTS is the name of the game and you’ll have to drive demand by targeting specific requirements.

I’ll have much more to come on this topic as the year progresses.

Coming Soon

I’m excited about the coming months and some of the interesting projects underway here at The FOG HORN.

  1. I will be delivering a substantial article, along with a video, on the Kalashnikov. I’ll address its origins, design and the psyche that has labeled it an “evil.” I will also focus on its prospects for the future as American and European technologies emerge to capitalize on its strengths. The mythology of a cheaply made and inaccurate battle rifle carried by third world armies will fade and give way to function based designs by industry leaders like Larry Vickers, Chris Costa and Travis Haley.
  2. I am also working on a review that I had to postpone for way too long of Danalco’s Sealskinz.
  3. Also look for a review of Extrema Ratio’s magnificent Pugio. If you have an interest in edged weapons this is one review that you’ll want to read. Extrema’s Pugio is both classic and timeless.

These are just a few projects out of an ambitious schedule that I think you’ll enjoy.

U.S. Navy Rescues Iranian Sailors After A 45 Day Ordeal

Amidst all the saber-rattling and Iranian threats of closing down the Straights of Hormuz an irony unfolds. Sailors from the U.S.S. Kidd rescued 13 Iranian sailors from a hijacked fishing vessel, reports CNN.

A team from the U.S.S. Kidd boarded the Al Molai taking 15 suspected pirates and freeing 13 Iranian fishermen. Apparently, Somali pirates had taken the Al Molai 40 to 45 days ago.

FOG HORN’s Jackass Of The Year Award Goes To Former CNN Anchor Rick Sanchez

Throughout the history of man’s development, scholars have observed the emergence of organized societies when groups of people, or a tribe, achieved surpluses. It is at this point of human development  that we see the emergence of thinkers, like philosophers and psychologists. Rather than planting or harvesting, philosophers attempt to answer profound questions like: “Is God so powerful that he can create a stone large enough that He Himself can not lift,” or “Can good exist without evil?”

The FOG HORN believes that polarity whether in ideology, sexuality, politics, …,etc. is as much governed by the laws of physics as subatomic particles themselves. It is inescapable, and without it all frame of reference is lost. Nowhere is this more evident than in the entertainment industry where for years we were taught that Russians were evil and that Eastern European women all looked like little babushkas, and without that we Americans could not be the manifestation of goodness.

So, in keeping with the concept that good or excellence can not exist without evil or mediocrity we decided to come up with our “Putz Of The Year Award.” Late this year, I made the decision to change the name to FOG HORN’s Jackass Award. I made that decision in order to avoid any suggestion of anti-Semitism. God knows, I’ve shtupped enough Jewish women in my life – including a really neat gal, with a leg brace, in a VW Beatle on a New London winter’s night.

Having said that, one has to broach the concept of “Jackass.” What makes someone a Jackass? Highly subjective, but generally speaking it is a combination of ego supported by a lack of aptitude, knowledge and talent. Each of those braches support numerous twigs and it would be an arduous task to catalogue them. So, without further ado, and  in response to Time’s Person Of The Year and CNN’s Hero Awards, The FOG HORN is proud to present the prestigious, although low budget, Jackass of The Year Award to: CNN’s Former Anchor Rick Sanchez

Take a listen to this clip of Rick discussing President Obama. Rick, why didn’t you just refer to the President as The Schwarze!

Now those of you, like The FOG HORN, who support our 2nd Amendment rights will know that Rick is notorious for his “anti-gun” stance. In fact, it is our opinion that Rick’s opinions are like reading Virginia Wolf after a couple of hits on Grey Goose. Furthermore, we see that Rick’s sole yardstick for his effectiveness are Tweets.

During a conversation with comedian Pete Dominick Rick Sanchez said he had experienced subtle forms of discrimination. He continued by saying “a lot of elite Northeast establishment liberals” viewed him as someone “who belongs in the second tier and not the top tier.” – Perhaps simply being honest Rick? Mr. Sanchez included among those establishment figures, Mr. Stewart, the host of “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central.

Mr. Sanchez had you been paying attention in anthropology class you would know that Jon Stewart is a Hebrew Homie. For God’s sake Rick, the man reads schmultz! And, in our eyes this all makes you a bubasutiehead.

Good luck to you Mr. Sanchez but please never darken the doorsteps of journalism again!

By the way, for 2012 we hope to have a Tactical Jackass©[1] patch design completed.

Thales Adds GeoMux To Its SDR Software Library

Readers will recall my series of articles, posted early in 2011, providing a high level overview of the technology supporting the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program. It was then that I introduced the concept of the software definable radio or SDR. I strongly felt then, as I do now, that the appropriate direction was support for a multiplexed environment to improve the efficiency of spectrum utilization and facilitate simultaneous voice and data communication. It appears that I was not alone and Thales has introduced its GeoMux waveform that accomplishes just that. The new GeoMux waveform will become part of Thales’ PR4G product line. However, I’m confident that similar solutions will begin to appear across the board.

MasterPiece Arms’ MPA57SST Semi-Auto Pistol (Prototype)

We’ve been keeping an eye on MasterPiece Arms, Inc., Carrollton, GA  since early in 2011 for two reason. First it’s a matter of home state pride and secondly they’ve been introducing exceptional firearms with a less than traditional design, look and feel.

While catching up on my Facebook posts and messages I ran across a video starring Phil presenting a new product, the MPA57SST, which was interesting to say the least because of my genuine affection for the 5.7 x 28 caliber – especially for folks in the security business. Other than perhaps a KRISS System V, the FNH P90 would be my choice on a security detail.

Like all Masterpiece designs the MPA57SST looks to be feature rich of high quality and exceptional ergonomics.

TABS Radio Initiation System Completes Successful NATO Testing.

This is something that you EOD hombres will love. TABS is a rather clever radio initiation system developed by Chemring EOD based in the UK. With TABS, the team, or command and control for that matter, can communicate from miles away with the timer and receivers to place a demolition into action at precisely the desired time without exposing a team.

TABS, which stands for timer answer back system is a radio frequency, tactical demolitions system with an operating range of many kilometers. TABS provides the warfighter with flexible and securely coded capability for combat demolition. An integral built-in timer ensures maximum effect with minimum risk to operators. High performance coupled with low power requirements means that the receivers can be emplaced for long periods, using commercial off the shelf (COTS) power sources. The answer-back system allows the user to interrogate emplaced receivers, to ensure demolitions and explosive effects will take place precisely upon command.

For a long time, one of the major problems with tactical demolition jobs rests with the simple fact that operators had to remain on site to ensure the desired effects were achieved. Well, let’s face it, nothing is an attention getter like an explosion at someone’s critical infrastructure. Teams had to contend with search parties and dogs making exfils less than dignified.

Daniel Defense Will Offer Its M4 V5 in 300 Blackout In 2012.

Daniel Defense, headquartered in Black Greek, GA announced that in 2012 it would introduce a version of its highly successful M4 V5 chambered in 300 Blackout. Daniel Defense started its trek into the military market when its M4 Rail™ was adopted by the United States Army Marksmanship Unit, for the Designated Marksman Rifle Program. Following up on that success, Daniel Defense pursued and was awarded the sole source contract to produce the RIS II for the SOPMOD block II for USSOCOM.

I am a huge fan of the 300 Blackout and I’m happy to see manufacturers jump on the 300 Blackout bandwagon. AR style weapons chambered in the 300 Blackout cartridge retain the weight and handling characteristics, commonality in parts and magazines across the AR design, but in the process pick up the performance of a .308 or 7.62×39 cartridge.

British Forces Are Finally Getting the MTP Personal Clothing System Issued.

There was a great deal of chatter and anticipation over the British MTP (Multi Terrain Pattern) Personal Clothing System (PCS); however, after the initial excitement subsided, it looked as though it would take forever to have it issued. That concern may now be dismissed, and British Forces are being issued the new MTP PCS.

The overwhelming response is favorable but not complaint free. There is  broad consensus that the MTP PCS emulates the U.S. design but somewhat “buggered up.”

Here’s an interesting review from our friends at ARRSE, written by someone tasked with wearing it.

How Do You Take Over Your Adversary’s Drone? A Holiday’s Shoot-The-Shit…

Part of what I enjoy most about the Holiday Season is sitting down with the “brus” putting a few down the hatch while engaging in, what military parlance defines as, a shoot-the-shit. Shoot-the-shits may involve a cigar or two, some discussion of the female anatomy followed by a prolonged treatise of a subject that you generally know little about; it’s all good, builds comradery and you never walk away with an answer because it may need to be discussed at subsequent shoot-the-shits.

This year, the shoot-the-shit was the CIA operated RQ-170 drone captured by Iran. The pivotal, shoot-the-shit, question was how the “f–k” does that happen? Well, the details supplied by the CIA suggest the operations center lost communications with the drone and the drone continued to fly until it ran out of fuel and subsequently crashing. On the other hand, the Iranian government’s statement alleges they took control of the drone and flew it down. They support this allegation with photographs and videos of the RQ-170, in their hands, virtually unharmed (perhaps they have highly skill fender and body technicians). So, who do you believe?

Well, my position is believe what you want to believe, but do you have a legitimate right to know, and I think the answer is NO; however, this was a shoot-the-shit so it had to be hashed out.

So, are we so incompetent as to let an RQ-170 go on an intelligence gathering mission and fall into an enemy’s hands? Yes we could be, or perhaps the objective was to assess Iranian defensive capabilities against stealth aircraft, or perhaps, we’d like Iran to “acquire” intelligence that is unreliable. How did the Iranian military detect the drone. The RQ-170 has a ceiling in excess of 40,000 feet. There are numerous possibilities but here are some of my thoughts.

Could the Iranian’s actually detect and possess the technology to take over a stealth drone? Well, may be, but how would you go about doing that? Here’s one theory.

  • Use jamming against the communications channel. Even if the jamming is not designed to be specific, it can still reduce the signal-to-noise ration sufficiently to disrupt communications. Once communications is disrupted you attack the GPS using a process called spoofing. Spoofing involves getting a GPS receiver to lock on to a bogus signal which then introduces a deceptive signal delay (which is how GPS works) and in the process misleading the drone’s guidance system. The drone’s own guidance system and / or auto pilot corrects it’s flight path to get back where it needs to be. However, that correction is where the enemy wants it to be rather than where the CIA wants it to be. Other than overcoming GPS encryption issues, we aren’t talking about Star Wars stuff. Maybe the jamming signal also impacted GPS reception, on the military navigational system, and the drone’s GPS falls back to a commercial GPS satellite network, which can then be readily attacked.

Rest assured that all sides are looking at this very closely and the combinations and permutations of the event are probably endless.

Kevin Brittingham Out at AAC (Advanced Armament Corp.)

Advanced Armament Corporation is second only to Surefire LLC in military suppressor sales. The company, founded in 1994, grew from a small shop in Lilburn, GA, located in the outskirts of the City of Atlanta, to being a driving force in commercial and military firearm signature reduction technologies. Mr. Kevin Brittingham, AAC’s President and founder, sold the company in 2009 to Remington Arms becoming part of the Freedom Group Family of Companies[1].

We’ve learned recently that Mr. John Day of Freedom Group has replaced Mr. Brittingham as President of Advanced Armament Corporation. It is too early to say what the change of command means for AAC but for now company insiders see business as usual.

The exact reason(s) for the change have not been disclosed and anything that you hear is unofficial and speculation at best.

Intermission – Entreacto – L’intervalle

It’s been a great year for us at The FOG HORN. We’ve had an opportunity to discuss a variety of subjects and present a number of products from outstanding companies all over the world. We wrote about them because they exemplify two essential philosophies; build a quality product, and deliver uncompromising customer support. However, regardless of national origin they share a common thread, a genuine appreciation for our young guys and gals in uniform. Make them your business partner whenever that need arises.

Our readers are everything to us and we especially want to thank them. I can’t begin to say how great it feels to read an e-mail expressing pleasure about having learned something; it’s comments like these that drive us. We also love to hear about your likes and dislikes. It’s the rudder that steers our ship.

In the coming year, my goal as publisher and editor is to expand on our list of industry partners; increasing the depth and breadth of the technology and gear we present. Our demographic is rather interesting to say the least and 98% of our reads originate in the United States, Europe, Malaysia/ Indonesia, Taiwan and South America.

I wish we could publish FOG HORN in languages native to all of these countries but it’s simply not attainable in our infancy. My goal for 2012 is to publish FOG HORN in French and Spanish. There are practical reasons driving that decision. First, those are the language skill sets available at this stage of our development. Secondly, large parts of the world speak Spanish and French. Rest assured we won’t be winning literary excellence awards, in either language, but we’ll try to make things as readable and enjoyable for our readers as possible. It’s a huge undertaking but one that I would like to complete this coming year.

In closing, no matter where in the world you find yourself, please accept our best wishes for a joyous Holiday Season and a prosperous and exciting New Year!

Having said that, we’ll be back online in 2012!

Setpoint Ammunition Wins ‘Greatest Potential’ Award

Press Release

OGDEN, Utah, Dec 22th, 2011 – Setpoint Ammunition was awarded the esteemed 2011 Entrepreneur Excellence Award for “Greatest Potential” from the NorthFront Entrepreneur Alliance Group (NEAG) at the third annual “Entrepreneur Excellence” Awards Banquet.

The NEAG was created under the sponsorship of SEED Weber/Davis/Morgan & Grow Utah Ventures with the purpose to bring entrepreneurs in Northern Utah together and help them develop their businesses. The group hosts monthly events that feature advice and training from experienced business professionals on key topics, competitions among local entrepreneurs, and social interaction with various peer groups. Their goal is to create an alliance that fosters and promotes entrepreneurism throughout Northern Utah.

When presenting the Greatest Potential award, NEAG officials made special note of Setpoint Ammunition’s unique manufacturing process for customizing rifle ammunition. The process is revolutionary in that it allows customers to dictate the case, projectile, powder load and overall length of the cartridge via their online ordering system at http://www.setpointammo.com/custom-rifle-ammo. This exclusive process gives consumers the ability to fine tune their ammunition to fit their specific firearm and application, assuring the most accurate and consistent performance possible. This represents a dramatic shift from the “one size fits all” mentality that has been the standard in commercial ammunition manufacturing for the last century. Setpoint’s custom rounds are available to the general public and can be ordered in any quantity, whether it is a single 20-round box or a truckload.

In addition to their unique ability to customize ammunition to order, Setpoint also brings another key advancement to the manufacturing process: extreme precision. Their system is fully automated on custom machinery designed and built by Setpoint Systems Inc. The elimination of human interaction during the manufacturing process combined with Setpoint System’s expertise in producing extremely tight manufacturing tolerances delivers an end-product that is very precise, consistent, and almost infinitely adjustable to adapt to specific firearms.

Brad Angus, President of Setpoint Ammunition, was pleased but a little surprised when his company was chosen for the NEAG’s Greatest Potential award. “This is a great honor to be chosen for this recognition, particularly when you consider all the exemplary efforts that we were competing against. The NorthFront group has attracted some of the most innovative entrepreneurs in the state, and we’re grateful to be among them. This award is a well-deserved validation for all of the people on the Setpoint Ammo team that have worked so hard to get us where we are today. We’re looking forward to an exciting and successful future for this business.”

UK Police To Run Trials On An Anti-Riot Laser System.

Photonics is working its way into police science. The generally accepted definition of photonics is the study of radiant energy based on a photon particle. It incorporates all aspects of light propagation including transmission medium, such as fiber optic technology.

We’ve heard just recently that police in the United Kingdom will be concept testing the SU100 anti-riot disruptive laser system. The system, developed by Photonics Security Systems, offers police a more effective and safer means of riot control than CS gas or Tasers. To ensure that the system is reliable and completely safe, British police will involve medical professionals throughout the trials.

The SMU100 anti-riot laser has an effective range of up to 500 meters; projecting a concentrated beam of light that will temporarily blind rioters or a subject. Concept drawings suggest that the SU100 will take the form of a scoped shoulder fired weapon, and one has to assume that the laser beam can be focused for greater selectivity.  If it is successful, it will very well prove its worth in situations similar to the 2011 UK riots.

Let’s hope that rioters will not equip themselves with mirrors!

Extrema Ratio Announces A New Addition To Its Lineup The M1A1.

The folks at Extrema Ratio, Prato Italy, have introduced a rather interesting new utility knife, the M1A1. This is somewhat of a departure from their military product line, which includes heavy-duty folding knives, combat knives and survival knives.

The M1A1 features the same superb Extrema quality with some interesting accoutrements that place it in direct competition with the venerable Victorinox or Wenger Swiss Army knife.

Extrema’s M1A1 comes equipped with a utility blade, screw driver and bottle opener as well as a marlin spike. Speaking from experience as both a former military man and an avid sailor, the value of a marlin spike cannot be overstated. It’s extremely useful in working with wet line, or knotted up line. I use a marlin spike whenever I need to construct an eye in braided nylon or to splice.

At first glance, the M1A1 should be comfortably at home on a tactical vest, M.O.L.L.E. pouch or in your tool bag. One thing you can count on will be the Extrema quality.

The recommended price in the EU is €165,50; making the U.S. MSRP $215.93 based on current exchange rates. However, selling prices here in the U.S. are likely to be lower.

A Look At The Industry Into 2012…

Iraq is over, and Afghanistan is winding down. We’ll soon have all of our folks back home and as they assimilate into society so to will some of the catalyst driving our industry dissipate. This is the natural order of things. So, it is time to refocus on the more mundane and traditional commercial application of our products. Much of what was developed to address the pressing needs of the operator in the field has direct application in the commercial space. Your key to success in the commercial space is value – not cheap.

If you plan to knock on the DoD’s door do so with the understanding that your goods must directly address stated needs, and close won’t get it as development dollars will be hard to come by.

Your Law Enforcement customers are now seeing a trickling of the technologies available to the war fighter. Look for this to continue at an accelerated pace, and those departments will be an excellent source of business for you.

Working with DHS will require time and money. Be open to teaming with large enterprise.

Finally, expect that organizations centered around training will do extremely well, but in a more competitive environment, as veterans return and become entrepreneurs.

There is “gold in them there hills” but you’re going to have to work harder and dig a little deeper. It’s time to put on the thinking caps, and reach out to those who can help you get your product and yourself out and in front of your customer.

The moment you’ve all been waiting for, the final Top N reasons where N = any real or imaginary number of 2011.

Top N reasons where N = 10 why David Letterman is like a Rorschach Test

10. They’re both the same age.

  9. Hey, gee fellas it’s an ink blot not me.

  8. They both provoke a response like getting kicked in the face on your own show.

  7. The tester and subject sit next to each other – just like an interview.

  6. Five inkblots are of black ink, two are of black and red ink and three are multicolored, on a white background- looks a lot like Dave’s wardrobe.

  5. Analysis of responses is recorded, then you can do a retake.

  4. No matter what scoring system is used you still don’t get an Emmy.

  3. Dave’s apparent validity is due to an illusion.

The exclusive GLOCK, known within the company as the “GLOCK Statue of Liberty Gun,” features an intricate, hand-engraved tribute to the United States and the Statue of Liberty. This theme was selected to recognize GLOCK’s 25th Anniversary in the United States, which coincides with the 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty.

“Often times, the misconception is that the limited edition pistols from GLOCK, such as the ‘Statue of Liberty Gun’ are hidden away in company vaults,” stated GLOCK Vice President, Gary Fletcher. “With the company celebrating 25 years in the United States, Mr. Glock wanted to give those who helped the company achieve that milestone of success an opportunity to own this one-of-a-kind piece.”

In addition to ownership of the exclusive GLOCK pistol, the highest bidder for the 2012 SHOT Show handgun will also receive a hunting trip with GLOCK celebrity spokesperson, R. Lee “The Gunny” Ermey, and a framed drawing of the original GLOCK 17, signed by GLOCK President Gaston Glock.

The GLOCK will be released for auction on GunBroker.com, the world’s largest internet auction site for sporting firearms and related equipment, official auction site of the National Sport Shooting Foundation (NSSF) and promotional partner of the Hunting Heritage Trust. Last year, more than 315,000 GunBroker users viewed the 2011 Shot Show Handgun on the popular internet auction site. As in recent years, bidding for the SHOT Show auction items will take place exclusively on GunBroker.com.

All proceeds from the auction of the “GLOCK Statue of Liberty Gun” will benefit programs to further America’s hunting and shooting sports heritage.

Reader Question – What Do You Think of the Steyr AUG?

Thank you for your question and for visiting The FOG HORN.

The short answer to your question is I love it! In my view, it’s probably one of the best carbines in use today. Here’s a short video I shot on the Steyr AUG, which may answer your question. Enjoy it and if you have additional questions lets us know.

Reader Question – Can You Explain an Aerodynamic Stall?

A visitor to The FOG HORN read my Air France post and wants to understand what is meant by an aerodynamic stall.

Here we go:

When an aircraft is designed, engineers build it to meet specific requirements. If it’s a military aircraft those requirements may be speed, service ceiling (how high it can go), maneuverability, etc.

In the design and engineering process, the manufacturer documents the aircraft’s performance criteria, for example: maximum payload when fully fuel, runway length requirements for take-off and landings, cruising speed, landing weight, landing airspeed at different weights and runways, aerodynamic stall speed. The pilot knows, that at certain indicated airspeed the wing will no longer generate the lift needed to keep the aircraft in flight. A landing for example is a controlled aerodynamic stall.

When flying, the altitude is controlled by the throttle and the stick or wheel controls the attitude of the aircraft. If you want to increase altitude, you increase throttle. The increased air movement over the wing increases lift and altitude increases. Pulling up on the yoke (the wheel) changes the attitude of the aircraft by raising the nose of the aircraft above the earth’s horizon. Pushing down on the yoke lowers the nose of the aircraft with respect to the earth’s horizon.

When you change the attitude of the aircraft without a corresponding change in the throttle you will impact the indicated airspeed. Pulling up on the yoke causes the nose to rise and airspeed to drop. If airspeed drops sufficiently, the wings stall and loose lift so the aircraft falls.

Generally the greatest risk of an aerodynamic stall is on landing. Your landing gear is down, your flaps are down and your indicated airspeed is low in preparation for landing. If the pilot makes an error and changes the attitude of the aircraft the wings will loose lift and the aircraft will fall. Since you’re at 800 feet, or so depending on the airport, you don’t have sufficient time to recover from the stall. However, when flying at cruising altitude you can recover from a stall by pushing the yoke forward so that airspeed increases and the wings begin to generate lift again.

What I’ve described to you is in general terms; however, every aircraft will differ. That’s the reason that pilots get checked out on a different aircraft.

To recap, an aerodynamic stall occurs when the wings no longer generate lift do to a disruption of airflow over the wing surface. Stalls can occur for a variety of reasons but airspeed and airflow are the key variables.

I hope this helps you and thanks for visiting The FOG HORN. Come back and see us!

Tactical Assault Gear’s Plate Carrier – Extreme Value and Functionality Made In The U.S.A.

In my last review of 2011, I take great pleasure in introducing you to one of the best values in tactical nylon on the market, the Tactical Assault Gear (T.A.G.)® Plate Carrier. However, before jumping right in to the review a bit of a background may be useful.

A lot has changed in personal ballistic protection since I wore an M1955 flack vest.

Fun Stuff For 2012 – News Anchors In Thongs.

We are thinking through a few possible “fun” projects for 2012 and came up with the idea that a TV/Cable News Anchor Thong Contest would be pretty cool – figuratively speaking. We’d like for everything with this contest to be haut plateau and haut de la ligne.

The contest is open to male and female anchors and we’ll reach out to the global community of TV / Cable News, in the spirit of peace and brotherhood. We’re still working out the details on the prizes but it will be something of a personalized tactical nature – lights, packs, tactical pens etc.

Participants will be asked to submit pictures. All photos must be in good taste; however, it should be clearly visible that you are wearing a thong.  Feel free to use make up as needed and tattoos will not disqualify you, so don’t concern yourself with that.

Prospective contestant’s employers may have restrictions that prevent you from participating – simply let us know and we will provide you with a cover.

We’re still putting together a project plan so I don’t have a timeline and much of that will depend on the kind of response we get from our prospects.

I’d love to hear suggestions and ideas. If you have a special TV or cable anchor that you’d like to include – they don’t need to be Super Anchors – we’ll reach out to that individual. Remember, that this is open to any anchor in the global community at any level in their career.

More On The 300 AAC Blackout…

One of our readers, and industry insider, shares this photo with us. The important thing to note is not just the group size – it’s the platform used to achieve it. This level of repeatable accuracy would be difficult to attain with the 5.56 x 45 NATO round.

Ladies you’ll note, the ammunition used was the Atlanta Arms pink tip; a perfect choice for you.

Reader Question About The TAG Plate Carrier.

Light jacket over TAG Plate Carrier

I have a reader question from someone who is trying to make a Christmas shopping decision. The individual wants to know if the vest can be worn under outerwear.

The TAG Plate Carrier is not designed as concealable; however, it has an extremely low profile and could be worn in that fashion. If you remove the padded shoulder straps it becomes even more adept to concealment than what is shown in the picture .

I have a complete review of TAG’s Plate Carrier in the works, regrettably it won’t be out in time for your Christmas shopping. However, I think it’s one of the best deals out there. Read my review.

December’s Review Line Up….

Author in TAG Plate Carrier

A year’s end rapidly approaches; soon 2011 will slip into history. It’s been a great year for the FOG HORN and Americans in general. For that, we have to thank our armed forces and the industry that time and time again has stepped up to bat in a pinch. One of those industry partners will be the subject of my final review for 2011.

Tactical Assault Gear (TAG) is in the business of designing and manufacturing high quality nylon web gear, accessories and tactical vests and a variety of other superb products. Now a member of LC Industries, TAG has strategic partnerships with Shellback Tactical and other suppliers.

This month we’ll bring you FOG HORN’s review of T.A.G.’s Plate Carrier. It’s light, flexible and comfortable with full support for SAPI and ESAPI standalone plates. Read my review here or on Scribd.

Happy Holidays!

Reader Question 300 AAC Blackout – Why Do You Use A 50 Yard Zero?

Thank you for your question and your permission to share it with other readers. It’s a great question!

I use a 50 yard zero for two reasons:

  1. I use the 300 AAC almost exclusively with a 220 gr bullet, so it’s a subsonic load. The muzzle velocity is right around 1030 feet per second and the effective range of the subsonic 300 AAC is right about 350 yards or 320 meters. A 50 yard zero is optimal given the optic I use.  (More on that...)
  2. I use an optic that is calibrated in one minute of angle (MOA), per click, with a maximum of 55 clicks or 55 MOA. Making an elevation adjustment to engage a target at 350 yards, with a 50 yard zero, requires 47 minutes or 47 clicks, so I am well within the operating range of my optic, and I don’t need multiple turns on the elevation turret. Where you zero is a personal choice driven by your choice of optics and how you shoot; however, it is generally best to zero so that you minimize use of the elevation turret. You don’t want to sit there and count turns because you tend to lose track of where you’re at. Keeping your adjustments within one turn of the turret is generally considered a reasonable strategy.

As you can see, your point of zero should be based on a pairing of the caliber/load and the performance characteristics of your scope.

The best thing you can do, is find your comfort zone for the type of shooting that you are going to do, but remember that the limiting factor is your optic. If you plan on using the 300 AAC in its full powered supersonic load, you may want to zero your rifle at 100 yards or 300 yards. Once again it will depend on your optic, reticle type, etc. Experiment!

Great question!

Kel Tec CNC Industries, Inc. Will Likely Unvail A Version Of Its SU-16 In 300 AAC – SHOT 2012

The Kel Tec folks are busy, in Cocoa, FL getting ready to launch a version of the SU-16 in 300 AAC Blackout. Kel Tec has traditionally not been risk takers in their marketing, which says to me that the 300 AAC is here for the long haul. I’m seeing AR uppers in 300 AAC hit the market every month – also a good sign. I’m anxious to see what the MSRP on the 300 AC SU-16 will be.

The Firearm Blog reported “…the first models will likely be the SU-16C and SU-16CA and will cost $50 – $70 more than the current 5.56mm variants…”

A Word or Two About Training…

What prompted this post is a conversation I had recently with an individual who is neither intelligent enough, nor responsible enough, to attend tactical carbine and pistol training.

Folks, what you watch on You Tube videos is designed to entertain you and to get your business, keep that in mind. It’s not dishonest, it’s marketing. It is not intended to duplicate what you will likely encounter under actual combat situation.

Having said that…

  • If you run up to open windows, you will last about 2 nanoseconds.
  • If you run through open doorways, you’re next stop is a morgue.
  • If you get under vehicles, your opponent will turn you into swiss cheese with ricochets.
  • If you fast rope while shooting and using one hand, you will fall and look stupid.
  • If you run through corridors kicking doors in you’ll set off a frag about waist-high.

I can add much more but God I hope you get the message. Guys, go out and have a blast; take out as many paper targets and ding as much steel as you like. It’s fun, and you’ll learn some things but when the day is done, return to earth.

Approach your training like you do academics. Check out the philosophy, school and trainers.

Instructors and schools:

  • Please do not let your trainees leave with the notion that what they just did is combat training.
  • Run NICS on any trainee that is not part of an LE , military or corporate contract.

I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone but I had to get that off my chest.

CamelBak® ThermoBak® AB à la mode

As 2011 comes to a close, I have to reflect back on days when prior to running a night operation I instructed members of my squad to fill their canteens to reduce the noise as we moved. In some instances, canteens were simply left behind whether out of ignorance or a perceived operational necessity.

The need to hydrate is more basic than the dynamics of a soldier operating in arid regions. Hydration is a life form requirement, a fundamental necessity of all living organisms.

I am always amused by the classic westerns where the villain, or at times the good guy, is lost in a desert and is beaten to the ground by a scorching sun, grabbing on to his throat as he expires. Although very dramatic, real-world dehydration is far more insidious.

Another True Story – The Case of The Professional

When I launched the FOG HORN my charter was to provide relevant and accurate material of value to individuals engaged in the front lines of defense. So, I talk about a lot of things relevant to the GWOT, and those that prosecute it. I take this very seriously and I conduct my effort professionally.

I also recognize that laughter is food for the soul, and I said that from time-to-time I would share my laughter with you; this is one of those occasions.

Today was an absolutely glorious day here at the bat cave so I hopped on my bike and knocked out 33 kilometers – 16 of which were against a 20 M.P.H. breeze; needless to say I was stoked.

After a nice workout, like today’s, I usually stop at a local Boulangerie – they have a nice patio area with umbrellas, and it’s a good spot to chill and take in some of the local eye candy. Today was no different.

As I sat at my table, I heard a woman, speaking in a loud tone; sounding rather distressed. I turned and looked to see what was wrong; I was pleasantly surprised to see that she was put together like the proverbial brick lavatory. As I approached to see if I could render assistance, I saw the iPhone through her long flowing hair so I stepped back and returned to my table, which was across  from hers.

I felt her mood presented an opportunity for me to console her, after concluding her conversation, so I sat and listened as she spoke. It soon became apparent she was not intellectually gifted, as she never used a complete sentence during 30 minutes of conversation. Although her voice lacked any hint of an accent, it was apparent that the constructs of a complete sentences eluded her – noun, verb, prepositions and conjunctions. Merde, if only Barry Eckhouse could here this gal!

Somewhat ironical is the fact that she was discussing professionalism with the other party. Emphatically, she insisted that she knew more about professionalism than the second party to the conversation.

Geez, I shouldn’t be critical I thought – remembering the brick lavatory element of her total personality. As I turned to make contact with her, she stands, drops her empty coffee cup, and in a burst of superb speed and form brings her heels together with stilettos pointed at a perfect 45° angle dropping into a deep squat, as on cue with the Commodores’ “Brick House.”

It transported me back to my days in military service, and a place in Honolulu called the Stop Light where Dee Dee (stage name) performed the same maneuver, launching a ping-pong ball from her accoutrements and hitting a beer pitcher several feet away.

Susan M Andersen, Professor at NYU’s Psychology Department and purveyor of “subliminal transference”, would find it intriguing that I was captivated by the event. But then again, she likely feels that men are aroused by women standing with feet shoulder width apart rocking from side-to-side  — in reality, Susan, all men know it’s not a sexual thing but rather a practical matter of airing yourselves out.

Well, I did miss the opportunity to commune with the lady; however, les garçon informed me that she is a regular customer, so Jusqu’à ce que la prochaine fois que ma poupée !
