Magpul’s PMAG 20 M3 NOW SHIPPING / PMAG 10 M3 COMING SOON

PMAG 20 M3Magpul Industries has now added capacity to produce the much anticipated PMAG 20 M3. The new 20 round magazine brings all of the GeN M3 improvements, including the constant curve geometry and fully anti-tilt, low-friction follower, which is a change from our GEN M2, straight PMAG 20. The constant curve design incorporated in the PMAG 20 M3 results in a shorter length and easier manipulation in the prone position.

Unlike with the PMAG 30 M3, the 20 round GEN M3 will altogether  replace the GEN M2 offering in Magpul’s product line.

Magpul Industries already has a 10 round version of the PMAG in the production pipeline that should become available sometime in 2013.

Law enforcement officials in 34 jurisdictions report that the majority of gang-related crime is committed with firearms.

  1. Over 60% of all gun violence is directly attributable to gangs and gang related enterprise such as drug smuggling and distribution.
  2. Please read this.
  3. Now that you’ve read it, do you honestly believe that magazine restrictions and a weapon’s ban will alter the tide of gun violence?

Source: 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment – Emerging Trends

Gang members acquire firearms through a variety of means, including illegal purchases; straw purchases through surrogates or middle-men; thefts from individuals, vehicles, residences and commercial establishments; theft from law enforcement and military officials, from gang members with connections to military sources of supply, and from other gangs, according to multiple law enforcement and NGIC reporting.

Gang members are becoming more sophisticated and methodical in their methods of acquiring and purchasing firearms. Gang members often acquire their firearms through theft or through a middleman, often making a weapons trace more difficult.

Enlisted military personnel are also being utilized by gang members as a ready source for weapons.

  • In November 2010, three former US Marines were arrested in Los Angeles, California, for selling illegal assault weapons to Florencia 13 gang members, according to open source reporting.47
  • In November 2010, a US Navy Seal from San Diego and two others were arrested in Colorado for smuggling at least 18 military issued machine guns and 14 other firearms from Iraq and Afghanistan into the United States for sale and shipment to Mexico, according to open source reporting.48

Gang members are employing countermeasures to monitor, intercept, and target law enforcement, sometimes with elaborate weapons and devices.

  • In February 2010, a Riverside County gang task force officer in California was nearly killed when suspected members of a White Supremacist gang rigged a zip gun on a gang task force security fence to discharge if anyone entered their property (see Figure 16). In December 2009, the same group staged a natural gas explosion at their property intended for law enforcement entering the premises.49

Gang Members Targeting Law Enforcement Vehicles for Weapons

In 2009, suspected gang members in Broward County and West Palm Beach, Florida burglarized nearly a dozen marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles stealing firearms, ballistic vests, and police identification.

Gangs and White-Collar Crime

NGIC reporting indicates that gangs are becoming more involved in white-collar crime, including identity theft, bank fraud, credit card fraud, money laundering, fencing stolen goods, counterfeiting, and mortgage fraud, and are recruiting members who possess those skill sets. Law enforcement officials nationwide indicate that many gangs in their jurisdiction are involved in some type of white-collar crime.

  • NGIC reporting indicates that the Bloods, Crips, Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords, Latin Kings, Mexican Mafia, Sureños, Norteños, La Nuestra Familia, Texas Syndicate, Aryan Brotherhood, various OMG and Asian gangs, and neighborhood-based gangs are engaging in white-collar crime.

Many gang members are engaging in counterfeiting because of its low risks and high financial rewards.

  • In July 2010, a Florencia 13 gang member in Los Angeles was arrested for operating a lab from his home that manufactured pirated video games.50
  • In April 2010, a member of the East Coast Crips was arrested in Los Angeles, California, for the sale of counterfeit goods and drug trafficking at a clothing store he co-owned. Police confiscated 824 counterfeit items from the store worth $43,762.51

Gang members are laundering profits from criminal activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution, through front companies such music businesses, beauty shops, auto repair shops, law firms, and medical offices.

  • Members of the Black Guerilla Family in Maryland used pre-paid retail debit cards as virtual currency inside Maryland prisons to purchase drugs and further the gangs’ interests, according to August 2010 open source reporting.52

Some gangs, such as the Bloods and Gangster Disciples, are committing sophisticated mortgage fraud schemes by purchasing properties with the intent to receive seller assistance loans and, ultimately retain the proceeds from the loans, or to comingle illicit funds through mortgage payments. Gang members are also exploiting vulnerabilities in the banking and mortgage industries for profit.

  • According to open source reporting, in April 2009, members of the Bloods in San Diego, California were charged with racketeering and mortgage fraud.53

Law Enforcement Actions and Resources

Gang units and task forces are a vital component in targeting gangs and have played a substantial role in mitigating gang activity in a number of US communities. The majority of NGIC law enforcement partners report that their agency has or participates in a gang task force, and most utilize a gang database to track and monitor gang members in their jurisdictions. There are 168 FBI Violent Gang Task Forces in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. In addition, ATF operates 31 Violent Crime Impact Teams (VCIT) and ICE operates eight Operation Community Shield (OCS) Initiatives nationwide (see Appendix C). The collaboration and coordination of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies has resulted in a number of successes involving gang suppression efforts.

NGIC law enforcement partners in at least 107 jurisdictions report that law enforcement action has resulted in a decrease of gangs or gang activity in their region.

  • In March 2011, officials from DHS, CBP, ICE, ATF, and local San Diego police were involved in the arrest of over 67 gang members and associates for drugs and cross-border crimes in the San Diego, California area. Operation Allied Shield III, a part of a San Diego County initiative to focus on prevention, detection, and suppression of crimes in areas impacted by border-related crime, aimed to seize drugs and weapons and to identify and observe gang members in a proactive way.54
  • In March 2011, 35 leaders, members, and associates of the Barrio Azteca gang in Texas were charged in a federal indictment for various counts of racketeering, murder, drug offenses, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Ten subjects were charged with the March 2010 murders of a US Consulate employee, her husband, and the husband of another consulate employee, in Juarez, Mexico.55
  • In February 2011, FBI, ATF, ICE, and DHS, and numerous state and local officials charged 41 gang members and associates from several different gangs in five districts with multiple offenses, including racketeering conspiracy, murder, drug and gun trafficking. The indictment involved members from the Click Clack gang in Kansas City, Missouri; the Colonias Chiques gang in Los Angeles; the Sureno 13 and San Chucos gangs in Las Vegas; MS-13 in Washington; and 13 Tri-City Bomber members and associates in the McAllen, Texas area.56

Outlook

Street, prison, and motorcycle gang membership and criminal activity continues to flourish in US communities where gangs identify opportunities to control street level drug sales, and other profitable crimes. Gangs will not only continue to defend their territory from rival gangs, but will also increasingly seek to diversify both their membership and their criminal activities in recognition of potential financial gain. New alliances between rival gangs will likely form as gangs suspend their former racial ideologies in pursuit of mutual profit. Gangs will continue to evolve and adapt to current conditions and law enforcement tactics, diversify their criminal activity, and employ new strategies and technology to enhance their criminal operations, while facilitating lower-risk and more profitable schemes, such as white-collar crime.

The expansion of communication networks, especially in wireless communications and the Internet, will allow gang members to form associations and alliances with other gangs and criminal organizations—both domestically and internationally—and enable gang members to better facilitate criminal activity and enhance their criminal operations discreetly without the physical interfacing once necessary to conduct these activities.

Changes in immigrant populations, which are susceptible to victimization and recruitment by gangs, may have the most profound effect on street gang membership. Continued drug trafficking-related violence along the US Southwest border could trigger increased migration of Mexicans and Central Americans into the United States and, as such, provide a greater pool of victims, recruits, and criminal opportunities for street gangs as they seek to profit from the illegal drug trade, alien smuggling, and weapons trafficking. Likewise, increased gang recruitment of youths among the immigrant population may result in an increase in gang membership and gang-related violence in a number of regions.

Street gang activity and violence may also increase as more dangerous gang members are released early from prison and re-establish their roles armed with new knowledge and improved techniques. Prison gang members, already an ideal target audience for radicalization, may expand their associations with foreign gang members or radical criminal organizations, both inside correctional institutions and in the community upon their release.

Gang members armed with high-powered weapons and knowledge and expertise acquired from employment in law enforcement, corrections, or the military may pose an increasing nationwide threat, as they employ these tactics and weapons against law enforcement officials, rival gang members, and civilians.

Globalization, socio-political change, technological advances, and immigration will result either in greater gang expansion and gang-related crime or displace gang members as they search for criminal opportunities elsewhere. Stagnant or poor economic conditions in the United States, including budget cuts in law enforcement, may undercut gang dismantlement efforts and encourage gang expansion as police agencies redirect their resources and disband gang units and taskforces, as reported by a large number of law enforcement agencies.

What Went Wrong In Newtown?

By: Sal Palma

It pains me to speak about Newtown especially at a time when families mourn the loss of wonderfully innocent little children – I guess this is my way of healing.

Twenty young lives and 6 adults were maliciously extinguished by a man who wrestled with mental illness. Since this tragic event, I cannot stop thinking about their horror. God only knows what greatness these young children could have achieved; perhaps the cure for cancer, space explorers, artists or simply great leaders – God knows we need them. It saddens me, but it also points to a very real problem, which if left unchecked has the potential to devour our individual freedoms. I’m speaking of the seeming propensity to ask government to take over tasks that squarely fall on our laps. I’m speaking of individual accountability.

Since the tragic event at Newtown, the mainstream media has been frothing at the mouth about evil guns. Their objective is to demonize an inanimate object. Bestowing them with a sinister personality that has to be crushed or dealt with. The reality is that these evil firearms are nothing more than tools. Tools that can be used safely and properly at the discretion of its operator. So what went wrong at Newtown?

As the investigation progresses, we are discovering that Adam Lanzo had significant behavioral issues. Furthermore, those issues were known to Mrs. Lanzo, his mother. Having said that, and in the absence of details to the contrary , why was Adam Lanzo able to get control of those firearms. Were the weapons secured in a safe, did they have their bolts removed, or were they even equipped with trigger guards? I’ll venture to guess that the answer is no. Chances are, they were accessible and possibly even on display, or even loaded. If my assertions are correct, that oversight caused Mrs. Lanzo her life and the life of those innocent men, women and children. Continuing –

Although Sandy Hook Elementary School was able to restrict physical access to the building, there was no law enforcement presence to deter or act as a primary perimeter. A situation that could have been readily addressed with off-duty officers or armed personnel. This has already been pointed out by a number of security experts in interviews. Adam Lanza was able to breach the glass door and enter the building. Classroom doors were likely unlocked while class was in session allowing Adam Lanza to enter the classrooms and dispense his hatred and anger. Was there a silent alarm system installed? These are basic measures.

It is quite clear to me that the system failed!

The buck stops with YOU the parents. Stop handing government more and more of the responsibility for protecting your children – simply out of convenience. Being a parent is not easy, make it your business to know what your child does on the internet, what sites he or she visits and what they are doing on social media. Simply handing them an iPhone, iPad, laptop, PlayStation or XBOX does not empower them, it exposes them to unimaginable dangers. Childbirth and generosity alone does not make you a good parent. Take responsibility! It is your ship and the helm is in your hands and yours alone.

The Gun Control Fallacy…

I was reading an article posted on CNN.com titled Gun control: Change is possible – and fast written by Philip Alpers. It is a stellar example of the benighted logic that’s employed by the anti-gun lobby in America.

Alper’s article uses Australia as an example; making ridiculous statements, that we’ve all heard too often, like “…In the years after the Port Arthur massacre (1996), the risk of dying by gunshot in Australia fell by more than 50%…”

Folks if we ban aircraft it follows that aircraft death will fall. If we ban swimming less people would drown and if we ban automobiles, less traffic fatalities would occur. The real question is what impact, if any, Australia’s 1996 ban – which many Australians see as ludicrous – has had on homicides? The answer to the question I’ve posed can be found in a government report: “Trends in violent crime” prepared by the Australian Institute of Criminology and published in June 2008.

{1FCFD20B-7853-483B-B2B6-4E2EAB13E530}tandi359_Page_3

The entire story is told by a simple examination of figure 1, on page 3 of 6. The chart shows an over all decline in homicides that started in 1989-90-well before the 1996 ban- continuing through 1996, when the ban was instituted, and once again moving upwards in 1997-98 through 1999-2000.

So much for “assault” weapon bans and its effectiveness on homicides. If you get into the details of the report, it suggests that statistically most homicides are committed by men and they attribute the reduction in homicides to a change in demographics – meaning less men in the population.

What happened in Newtown, CT left all Americans shocked and sadden and our hearts go out to the families in that wonderful New England Community. However, the gun-control neurosis needs to be seen for what it is. A poorly reasoned approach to dealing with behavioral problems that we are too weak to face and incapable of solving.

Change is possible but fast has only been successful at creating mediocrity. Guns are not the driving force behind the senseless violence.

Scud Missiles Being Fired Against Syrian Rebels

The New York Times reports that Al Assad’s forces have fired Scud missiles at Syrian Rebels. NYT can account for up to six missiles fired on targets in the North of Syria.

The Scud missile is generally used against large military formations. It is quite possible that Al Assad’s forces are shaking out those systems in preparation for a chemical attack. This is without question a very serious escalation of aggression.

Stay Fit Or Get The Boot!

PTIf you have a weight control problem and cannot meet the military physical requirements you can assume that you’ll have a short-lived carrier reports the Washington Post.

The coming austerity and drawdowns translate to a shrinking force and the U.S. Armed Forces are taking physical fitness seriously. The Post reports that between 1998 and 2010, the number of active duty personnel considered overweight or obese has more than tripled. It’s an alarming statistic but seems to be tracking changes in the general population.

According to the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, in 2010, 86,186 service members were identified as overweight or obese. This translates to approximately 5.3% of the force. The alarming trend has prompted the U.S. Army to revisit its training programs but there are no second chances here, and commanders have been directed to weed out soldiers who are “unfit to fight.” In this year alone, 1,625 soldiers were discharged for being out of shape.

The writing is on the wall, so take heed if you want a military career. Keep in mind that weight management is an accounting problem. The more food you consume, the more calories you intake. Sitting on post watching a flick or posting on FaceBook won’t hack it, or you may find yourself doing it from home as a civilian.

Our message to you is as follows:

  1. If you can’t see at least 30% of your plate area you’re eating too much.
  2. Eat 3 squares a day, but limit deserts to once or twice per week. You don’t need all that sugar.
  3. Leave the beer and soda cans in the frig.
  4. Bike, walk, swim or run at least three times a week.
  5. Sleep 8 hours a day.
  6. Exercise. You don’t need to bench press 300 lbs. Adopt a PT regimen that forces you to use your own body weight as resistance.
  7. Internalize and discipline yourself to have this lifestyle.

Things That Get My Goat…

I came across this product while doing charitable work at an assisted living facility. The elderly gentleman that had it was thrilled because someone had given him a bottle of HUGO, the brand name for Hugo Boss men’s fragrances.

IMGThis is what this 87 year old man actually had… You should be able to enlarge the picture by clicking on it.

The packing unlawfully (at least in my view) takes advantage of the HUGO and Hugo Boss brands to mislead the buyer. This is becoming a problem much too serious to ignore. The marketer uses carefully crafted language to disassociate themselves with Hugo Boss, Inc. They call it “eau de toilette,” which is revealing of its quality.

This is a problem encountered by a number of companies in our industry; Extrema Ratio, Prato, Italy is but one example.

I want to leave you with this one thought. A great many of you sold everything but the kitchen sink to start your small business. You’ve worked tirelessly and risked what you had and didn’t have to develop a product and a brand. Your brand is your good name, and that of your business, but all too often there are those that abuse it.

Don’t tolerate this nonsense. Have a heart-to-heart with your Congressman or Senator. Ultimately it is you and your customer that pays the price.

Streamlight logoEAGLEVILLE, PA – Streamlight Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting and weapon light/laser sighting devices, announced it has upgraded the lumen light output and intensity of its “traditional” TLR gun-mounted tactical lights.

The upgraded models include the TLR-1 and the TLR-2, as well as the strobe-equipped versions of these lights, the TLR-1s and the TLR- s. Both TLR-2 models also feature an integrated red aiming laser.

“These enhanced traditional LED lights offer extreme brightness and intensity over earlier models, while continuing to deliver long run times and good overall value,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “They provide extraordinarily bright light for the broadest range of tactical situations, whether for directly illuminating a subject or disorienting a target with the strobe mode.”

All four models now provide 300 lumens and 12,000 candela peak beam intensity. Each features a C4 LED that is impervious to shock with a lifetime of 50,000 hours. In addition, Streamlight’s proprietary deep-dish parabolic reflector provides a concentrated beam with optimum peripheral illumination to aid in navigation. The TLR-2 models feature a 650-660 nanometer red laser for long-range targeting.

“They provide extraordinarily bright light for the broadest range of tactical situations, whether for directly illuminating a subject or disorienting a target with the strobe mode.”

With extensively live-fire tested, impact-resistant construction, all four models are manufactured from 6000-series machined aircraft aluminum with a black anodized finish. The housing for the TLR-2 and TLR-2 s laser is fabricated from a high-impact, chemically resistant engineered polymer.

The upgraded models continue to provide 2.5 hours of continuous runtime to the 10% output level, with solid state current regulation for consistent illumination level.

All four lights offer a momentary-to-steady, on-off switch, readily accessible by either right or left hands. The TLR-2 models also provide a three-position mode selector switch for laser only, LED only, or both modes together. The strobe feature on the TLR-1 s and the TLR-2 s is activated by a double-tap of the momentary paddle.

Securely fitting to a broad range of weapons, the TLR lights feature a one-handed, snap-on and tighten interface that keeps hands away from gun muzzles when attaching or detaching the lights. The lights mount directly to handguns with Glock-style rails and to all Picatinny rails. All four lights come with keys for Glock-style, Picatinny, Beretta 90two, S&W 99 and S&W TSW rails. The laser sighting feature of both TLR-2 models offers highly accurate sight repeatability when remounting.

The TLR-1 models weigh 4.18 ounces while the TLR-2 models weigh 4.72 ounces. All four measure 3.39 inches in length and are powered by two 3-volt CR123A lithium batteries, which have a storage life of 10 years. The TLR-1 models feature an IPX7 rated design, making them waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes, while the TLR-2 models feature an IPX4 rated design for water-resistant operation.

All four lights come with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. The MSRP for the TLR-1 is $194, and the MSRP for the TLR-1 s is $199. The MSRPs for the TLR-2 and TLR-2 s are $483 and $488, respectively.

Headquartered in Eagleville, PA, Streamlight, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of high-performance lighting, weapon light/laser sighting devices and vehicle solar charging devices for professional automotive, firefighting, law enforcement, military, industrial and outdoor applications. Streamlight is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company. For additional information, please call (800) 523-7488 or visit www.streamlight.com.

Not Finding Your Sights!

images (4)I read an interesting article on the Personal Defense Network “I Can’t See My Sights!”  written by Grant Cunnigham , 16 November 2012. Grant did a great job explaining to older shooters the physiologic dynamics of older shooters,  and recommended adjustments to help get you back on track.

I’d like to add a few things to “I Can’t See My Sights” that I hope will complement his excellent piece.

As most of you know, defensive shooting is quite different from target shooting; differing in several very important ways.

First is proximity. In a defensive situation the threat is generally within 20 feet of you. Second, you are shooting at a target that will react to your actions and finally you’ll probably be confronting a target in less than optimal lighting conditions. These situations are challenging to even the younger shooters, and finding your sights is a recipe for disaster.

To be a good defensive shooter you need to train regularly and diligently. Your training should emulate defensive situations; incorporating unholstering your weapon, dropping the safety, grip and extension. The effect that you are after is sight alignment without a sight picture. You are training the muscle groups in your arms, wrist, shoulders and chest such that when the weapon is drawn and raised your sights are already aligned, and on target.

As a defensive shooter your eyes are on your target and nothing else. You want to know what your target is doing, what’s in front of and behind your target.

There are a number of tools available in the market to assist you. LaserLyte, my personal favorite, has a line of excellent training lasers and systems. They are relatively inexpensive and very effective. This is a great starting point.

In my own personal training, for every live round I fire, I dry-fire 500. I set up a pendulum target ( to emulate target motion), I draw and fire; then start the cycle over again. If you choose to take a similar route start slow there’s no need to hurry. Find your sights and fire – remember that the effect we are after is developing muscle memory. Be patient, it takes time to develop skill. However, I feel comfortable in saying that by practicing two to three times per week, in two to three months, you’ll find yourself on target without a conscious effort to find your sights.

Give it a shot!

Possible Merger In The Works–Izhmash & Izhmekh

images (4)The Russian government is considering a proposal presented by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to merge the financially troubled Izhmash with another firearms manufacturer, Izhmekh, creating a new enterprise which will be called Kalashnikov. Vladimir Putin favors the proposal saying,

“As for the merger, this is of course possible. But the result needs to be an improvement in the situation and in no way a worsening. And always in such cases, there are many social questions. I ask you to pay attention to these.”

“I would like support in creating through the merger a cooperation where we can concentrate industrial potential and can make a modern firearms factory,”

Both firms are not in the best of health due to steep declines in orders from the Ministry of Defense, and a failed approach to the commercial markets in Europe and the United States. I cannot speak for the EU, but there is no lack of demand for Russian AK47, AK74 and variants in the United States.

If properly capitalized with an aggressive marketing strategy tuned to the commercial markets, the new firm “Kalashnikov” stands to do very well. Both companies would be merged as part of the giant state industrial conglomerate Russian Technologies.

Richard Fitzpatrick, Founder Of Magpul Industries, Goes On Record About The PMAG Gen3.

MagpulI am the founder of Magpul Industries and also a former active duty Recon Marine (88-94, 0321/0352). We also have several other former active duty Marines in the company, and have from our very beginnings.  Our mission and foundations have always had at their core the best interests of our Marine Brothers and all US Service men and women.
There is indeed an issue with respect to IAR compatibility with the first generation, and MREV, or GEN M2 PMAG, due to the IAR having an SA-80/HK416 specification magazine well as opposed to the standard, Colt specification magazine well of other US service arms.  While we certainly wish the IAR was specified with a standard magazine well, it has been fielded as submitted, and this incompatibility now presents a safety and survivability issue for those Marines deployed in Combat.

As such, we support the intent of this memo with respect to compatibility with our earlier generation PMAGs.
Our current generation PMAG, the GEN M3, is fully compatible with the IAR, the M4, the M16A4, and all other 5.56 platforms in the current US inventory.  We are currently well into the process of arranging 3rd party verification and official testing to prove the advantages in performance, durability, lifecycle, and potential cost savings of the GEN M3 PMAG as a fully IAR compatible magazine solution for consideration by the USMC and the other Armed Services.

MasterPiece Arms Announces A Hammer with Disconnect

MasterPiece Arms, manufactures the MPA MAC Line of semi-auto submachine pistols and carbines. The company has announced a new hammer design with disconnect for all MasterPiece Arms weapons. The new hammer design, featuring a spring-loaded disconnect, comes years after MPA began R&D for a better hammer design for all their weapons. The new design that will be shipping on all new MPA weapons starting January 2013 completely eliminates trigger slap, providing a smooth and comfortable firing experience. Trigger slap has been a design characteristic on MAC type weapons since the “closed bolt” function became the requirement back in the 1990’s. Until today, this was an accepted, albeit not desired, feature of this weapon type. The new MPA hammer with disconnect completely eliminates this undesirable characteristic permanently.

MPA Hammer Disconnect The new hammer with disconnect will also be available for existing 9mm, 5.7×28 and .45 ACP MPA models. The new hammer will simply swap out with the existing hammer. This innovation will also work on all Cobray & Leinad weapons. Installation instructions will be available on www.masterpiecearms.com to complete the exchange. The hammer with disconnect replacement kit will MSRP at $39.99

A Safety Note Concerning Airsoft Systems

images (3)A number of industry experts and trainers are integrating Airsoft technologies into their lesson plans; this is a good thing. Repetition is at the core of the learning process and Airsoft technology has made that possible in a cost effective and non-lethal way.

Note that all of the safeguards employed in live fire drills must carry over to your Airsoft session so that it becomes engrained. As you understand the limits and technologies surrounding your weapon platforms you should also understand the Airsoft technology to the same level of proficiency.

One area of concern, for us, is the use of gas substitutes. Most airsoft systems run on an inert “green” gas. However, it is possible to purchase adapters to allow you to run on propane. Keep in mind that propane is heavier than air and it will settle at the lowest point in your room. It is highly flammable and its lower explosive limit is about 20,000 parts per million.

Propane is also an asphyxiant; however, concentrations below 20,000 ppm do not represent a health hazard. The gas does not readily dissipate and will accumulate. So, be sure that your training space is well ventilated and that there are no sources of sparks or open flames at or near floor level.

Syrian Rebels Firing Captured Russian OSV-96 12.7x108mm

Caught this video of Syrian opposition forces using a Russian OSV-96 to engage grounded Syrian aircraft. The OSV-96 is a .50BMG rifle designed for anti-material engagements. The rifle was either captured or brought in from Libya. Either way, Al-Assad’s military maybe down a few jets after all is said and done.

Izhmash’s New AK-12 Rifle Has Technical Problems Says Dmitry Semizirov.

Dmitry Semizirov is the general director  of Russia’s Tochmash, more appropriately Nudelman Precision Engineering Design Bureau (KB Tochmash), a leading weapon testing facility.

Director Semizirov commented to RIA Novosti “the AK-12, has shown up a range of problems during initial testing…” but failed to elaborate on the specific failures. He  continued saying,”the trials are ending, they are around 80 percent complete right now, but there are a series of flaws in it…” When asked for specifics on the flaws found, Director Semizirov declined to elaborate claiming  “the developer’s confidential information.”

Izhmash’s General Designer Dmitry Zlobin defended its AK-12 saying, “… it was sent for preliminary trials precisely to highlight all snags and weaknesses in the new development; having received Tochmash’s expert observations, Izhmash’s designers will incorporate any necessary changes to the weapon ready for state trials in the second half of 2013.” Izhmash expects to begin production at the end of 2013.
The AK-12 began life mid-2011. The rifle retains the overall packaging of the AK-74, which has been in service with the Russian Army since the 1970s.

U.S.M.C. Fallback To Metal 5.56 Magazines

Marine Corps Times reported, today, the U.S.M.C. has banned the use of polymer magazines. In a message signed by  Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, the Marine Corps’ deputy commandant for combat development and integration, the order goes into effect immediately. Scuttlebutt about sporadic bans, based on weapon compatibility, surfaced earlier in 2012. Lt. Gen. Mills’ message makes the ban official across the service.

Magpul Industries, has released a Gen III magazine, which the manufacturer claims eliminates any compatibility issues.

It’ll be interesting to see if the U.S.M.C. reconsiders its position, but for now the ban is effective Marine Corps wide. Will the Army and Navy follow suit?

Did Someone Say 300 Blackout?

Robert Beckhusen, wrote a great piece “Silent but Deadly: Special Forces Seek Quiet, Subsonic Bullets” published in WIRED 19-Nov-2012.

In its latest round of small-business solicitations, the Pentagon’s Special Operations Command, or SOCOM, is seeking out subsonic ammunition. The reason, according to the solicitation, is to ”provide superior covert and stealth capabilities” for not only the military, but police forces and the Department of Homeland Security. In theory, and for rifles in the 5.56, 7.62 and .338 calibers, the bullets will travel at low enough velocities to avoid breaking the sound barrier, thus creating no “crack” noise. Breaking the sound barrier also pretty much negates the use of a sound suppressor, or “silencer,” which the special forces would likely want to use against militants in Afghanistan and around the world.

Individuals familiar with the use of sound suppressors will readily pick up on a number of issues. I took the liberty to underline one of them above. However, this is no reflection on Robert Beckhusen but rather the author of the actual solicitation, which can be read here.

“PHASE I: Conduct a feasibility study to determine if a sub-sonic concept/capability can be achieved for the 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and .338 caliber rounds. The feasibility study should determine if the following minimum performance parameters can be achieved and exceeded. The feasibility study should determine what is in the art of the possible that will maximize the following performance parameters realizing that only the minimum performance parameters are specified. The sub-sonic round must:
a. hold a velocity standard deviation of 14 or less significantly increasing accuracy and engagement range.
b. be clean burning with no unburned propellant in the gas system/receiver or in the weapon after repeated firing. No unburned propellant is the best available metric given no current military standard exists to baseline against.
c. be flash suppressed to where, in a suppressed weapon, no flash is visible.
d. provide a minimum 40 decibel reduction in sound from full velocity ammunition in a suppressed weapon.
e. have no greater than a threshold of 30 FPS shift in velocity from lot to lot while in production with an objective of 15 FPS shift.
f. maintain accuracy of 1.25 Minute of Angle (MOA) out to 300 yards with no singled shot group exceeding 1.5 MOA for a total 10 ten shot groups (5 groups fired through 2 different weapons).
g. stay sub-sonic at all temperature extremes (-40F to 165F) and functions in all USSOCOM weapons in that caliber.
h. be less than or equal to other quality ammunition for each of the respective calibers.”

How many bug-a-boos can you find in the Phase I criteria? Needles to say this solicitation should go back to the drawing table and written or reviewed by someone who understands the use of suppressors, subsonic ammunition and the physics of sound propagation.

In the mean time, I invite USSOCOM and Robert Beckhusen to visit and read my suppressor category for some much-needed background.

I would also like to encourage USSOCOM to take a close look at the 300 Blackout ammunition, which is available COTS in a full power or subsonic load. You can also read my review here.

Extrema Ratio Introduces A Single-Edge Version Of Its Pugio Combat Dagger.

Extrema Ratio introduced the Pugio Combat Dagger in 2011; today it can be seen as part of many-a-kit in Afghanistan. The knife was an instant success because of its classic dagger design and nothing excels more than a dagger when the chips are down. A reputation earned since before Christ.

Regrettably, a number of countries restrict daggers; Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom to name a few. In order to serve a large demand for its Pugio, Extrema has launched a single-edged version of the legendary combat dagger.

If you are fortunate enough to live in area where a double-edged weapon is not vilified, I strongly recommend that you seek out the Pugio Combat Dagger. However; if you are facing ridiculous restrictions the single-edged Pugio is a combat knife that you should seriously check out.

Superb quality and customer service make Extrema Ratio a top pick for me.

SILVER SHADOW’s® Gilboa™ 6,5″ APR™ 5.56mm Pistol

I’m a huge fan of many of the Israeli firearm design concepts. They draw on the years of experience the Israeli military and security sector have, especially in the area of CQB/CQC. SILVER SHADOW® Advanced Security Systems Ltd is one such company that has successfully translated extensive and relevant hands on experience to produce some rather interesting firearm designs, manifested in the company’s Assault Rifle line.

I was particularly impressed with their APR™ Assault Pistol Rifle. The APR™ chambers all variants of 5.56mm ammunition using standard M4/M16 magazines. It’s available in semi-auto or selective fire. The APR™ can be configured as a shoulder fired rifle or, using a quick detachment lever, the stock can be removed to enable handgun style firing.

The APR™ features a patented gas system and recoil spring. SILVER SHADOW® claims the proprietary gas system allows the weapon to run cleaner and cooler. Suppressed operation , particularly in weapons of this length, exhibit an undesirable increase in cyclic rate. APR™’s patented gas system mitigates that risk; making the  Gilboa™ APR™ an ideal weapon for CQB/CQC or for use in mounted operations were space is at a premium. Look for more on SILVER SHADOW’s® Gilboa™ line.

USS Scorpion Memorial Committee’s 45th Anniversary Memorial Service

The USS Scorpion Memorial Committee is selling tee shirts for $25.00 to raise money for the 45th Anniversary Memorial Service in May 2013. If interested, please contact Mary Etta at maryettanolan@msn.com

Mary Etta is the surviving daughter of Scorpion’s Chief Of the Boat (COB) TMC (SS) Walt Bishop.

The U.S.S. Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack class nuclear powered attack submarine. While on patrol, the Scorpion went down with all hands (99 men). Scorpion’s wreckage is located about 400 nautical miles southwest of the Azores. The last contact made with Scorpion was on 20 May and 21 May, 1968.

The ship was officially declared lost on 5 June 1968. Although the cause of its demise is not known officially, the general consensus, and one I support, is a main sea water intake system failure flooded the ship. Upon hearing the news, initial speculation was that Scorpion was a “Cold-War” casualty, but that was simply scuttlebutt.

Pictures of the wreckage show no signs of explosions; in fact, most of the pressure hull is intact with no signs of implosions, which suggest that the Scorpion was completely flooded before impact on the bottom. Due to the nature of submarine operations the day-to-day dangers faced by submariners is rarely discussed.
