Subsonic Ammunition

300BKTGIF readers! It looks like we’ve made it through another week and look forward to a nice weekend. Weather here at the bat cave has been excellent and this weekend looks to be just dandy. BTW, Happy Mother’s Day to all of my mom readers. You deserve it but always bear in mind that motherhood is about the journey and not just the event.

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is subsonic ammunition, but if you’d like to change the subject to how great Fox News’ Andrea Tantaros or Kimberly Guilfoyle would look in OCP thongs I’m up for that as well. As with all shoot-the-shits, you a free to make any unsupported statements or claims, use profanity, change subjects and insult anyone or anything.

Subsonic ammunition is ammunition that has been loaded to have a muzzle velocity of less than 1100 feet per second. It is generally used in conjunction with a suppressed weapon; however, as cool as subsonic ammo is it has a very specialized and limited use.

Throughout the year, I get several questions on the subject that revolve around effective range and projectile weight, so I’ll start by providing some background that’s important for you to have if you want to maximize the effectiveness of this type of ammunition. I’ll begin with air.

Air is very much like a fluid from a physics point of view. Have you ever been in a swimming pool and noticed that as you swim, or frolic, in the water you encounter pockets of colder and denser water? The same holds true for air. Sound propagation is influenced by these layers; a perfect example is sonar. Submarines are able to use these thermoclines to avoid detection. The sound  or ping emitted by a sonar transducer reacts differently as it encounters these layers. The same holds true for a projectile moving through the air. If a projectile moving faster than 1100 feet per second encounters an air mass where sound propagates at 960 feet per second you will hear a sonic crack, sounding very much like a firecracker. If a projectile passes through air that propagates sounds at  1000 feet per second, at 960 feet per second, you’ll hear nothing. So, air temperature and humidity influence the acoustic characteristics of a subsonic projectile along its flight path.

Another characteristic of subsonic ammunition is best understood by discussing kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is calculated using the following equation…

k=mv2/2

Longhand this is what the equation is saying. Kinetic energy “k” is equal to mass times velocity squared quantity divided by 2. What does all this mean?

Without actually crunching numbers we can simply evaluate the equation, which tells us that velocity has the greatest impact on kinetic energy for any given value of  mass. Why is that? Because velocity is raised to the power of two, or squared; therefore, if we reduce the velocity of a bullet we decrease its kinetic energy, and this is the reason subsonic ammunition will generally have a much heavier bullet. A more specific example follows.

A .308, for example, is normally loaded  to a muzzle velocity of 2600 fps. In order to make it subsonic, we decrease the load from 2600 fps to say 1000 fps and in the process greatly reducing its kinetic energy. To compensate for the loss in velocity, manufacturers will top it off with a 220 or 240 grain bullet instead of a 168 grain or 175 grain projectile. It still has a lower kinetic energy overall because mass has less of an impact on kinetic energy than velocity – mass is not raised to a power.

The heavier bullets when combined with the lower velocity means that as range to the target increases, more energy is dissipated faster, and for that reason subsonic ammunition has a very limited range. For rifle calibers, 250 yards is usually max. and claims of 900 yard shots with subsonic ammunition can be generally classified as bull shit.

Subsonic ammunition is ideally suited for use in handguns and bolt action rifles. This ammo will not cycle the action of a semiautomatic rifle reliably, if at all. However, in a bolt action rifle the only thing the shooter will hear is the sound of the hammer striking the firing pin.

To summarize, subsonic ammunition will exhibit the following properties.

  1. in flight acoustic signature will vary with atmospheric conditions. If the bullet velocity exceeds the sound propagation velocity along its flight path, you will hear a sonic crack similar to that of a firecracker. The best loads in my experience are 960 fps up to 1000 fps. When working with your loads be alert to chamber pressure limitations.
  2. Subsonic ammunition will not reliably cycle the action of a semiautomatic rifle; therefore, use should be limited to  pistols and bolt action rifles for best results. Using subsonic ammunition in carbines like the M4, SCAR, etc., means you’ll have to manually charge the weapon.
  3. Subsonic ammunition with its heavier bullets perform extremely well at ranges not exceeding 250 yards and 150 yards optimally. Forget 1000 yard shots with a subsonic load.

Have a great weekend everyone and Mother’s Day!

Generals Dunford and Selva To Lead The Joint’s Chiefs

635663717182488751-16786934412-148dc97f6f-b

President Obama tapped  Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The President also named Air Force Gen. Paul Selva, the chief of U.S. Transportation Command, to serve as the next vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The nominations still need to be approved by Congress but both men are expected to sail through the process.

We congratulate General Dunford and Selva on their appointment and wish them success as they steer the Joint Services through some very challenging time. On a lighter note, troops can expect DoD directives that are less verbose and more richly illustrated than in prior years.

Sneak Preview: CCI’s QUIET-22

P1000137

We picked up a few boxes of CCI’s QUIET-22 ammo that we are reviewing  for you. This is a very slow 40gr load with an advertised muzzle velocity of 710 fps that translates to a kinetic energy of 44.75 foot pounds at the muzzle. I don’t want to call it less than lethal but it is well below what NATO classifies as lethal. CCI sells it as plinking ammo so we’re going to see how well it does for accuracy. This ammo will not cycle a semi automatic action; however, we have a P22 and a few recoil springs that we’ll tinker with to see if we can get the action to cycle reliably and we’ll publish those results for you in our upcoming review.

Kalashnikov USA and CAA USA Leaving Pennsylvania

CAA Kalashnikov Logo

Tullytown, Pa. (April 2015) – Kalashnikov USA, manufacturer of Kalashnikov style firearms, and CAA USA announced plans to relocate to South Florida. The new facility will include corporate offices and allow for manufacturing, warehousing and shipping functions in one location. The move, which will take place over the next several months, will not affect the projected 2015 second quarter shipping of the new Kalashnikov USA firearms.

“With the growth of the company, manufacturing requirements and the rebranding efforts now underway, Kalashnikov USA felt the time was right to move the headquarters where we can incorporate our new manufacturing capabilities,” Thomas McCrossin, CEO of Kalashnikov USA said. “Our new facility in South Florida offers the opportunity to expand as we grow while offering customers increased customer support and firearms produced using the latest manufacturing technologies and materials.”

The new US132 modern rifle and US109 tactical shotgun are on target to be released by early summer 2015 incorporating the new Kalashnikov USA slogan “Russian Heritage  / American Innovation.”

“With demand for CAA accessories for the AR / AK platforms from customers and OEM sales increasing, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to find a facility that could grow with the company,” Thomas McCrossin, CEO of CAA USA said. “The new facility and location will allow us to grow our product line and offerings to customers while enhancing our logistical capabilities. During this period of transition, CAA is also undergoing a rebranding effort to refresh our look and image as we appeal to an increasingly broader market that includes civilians, law enforcement and our military customers.”

Why ISIS Is The Least Of My Worries

In this Friday’s shoot-the-shit I share with readers what actually concerns me, and it’s not ISIS.

No doubt you’ve all heard about how well the stock market is doing. The stock market has experienced 15% compounded growth over the last few years. Why?

We’d like to think that it signals an economic recovery, yet we still see wage stagnation, consumer spending is not robust, savings rates are virtually nonexistent; in fact, any gains that we’ve seen in recent months come from lower oil prices and not a strong economic recovery. Lower oil prices we know have a positive and immediate impact on disposable incomes. Yet when oil prices fall we don’t see a market rally; instead, we see a market decline. Don’t they realize that higher disposable incomes are good for the overall economy? Yes they do – and this is a question that I’ll come back to. However, what it suggests to me is that the stock market values sector earnings more than a macro economic boost and there is a reason for that. I don’t need to tell you business owners that increased disposable income is good for the total economy, so what the hell is it with Wall Street?

Wall Street is the catchall name given to the financial sector and although financial services are wide in scope, they have one universal characteristic, they create nothing. They are in the business of renting capital for a fee, return, and/or part ownership, or in any combination thereof. To take your company public, you pay a fee. To acquire capital for day to day operations or expansion, without taking your company public, you can seek and negotiate venture capital, for a fee and/or extending part ownership. You can consign your receivable accounts, again for a fee, or you can borrow money for a fee, which we call interest. Wall Street does one thing and that is allocate capital to where it has the highest return. It’s you, the entrepreneur or business owner, that create product, employment and real economic growth. Some Wall Streeters see themselves as captains of industry and enablers of enterprise, which is complete and utter bullshit that comes from drinking the wrong Kool-Aid. Wall Street rents capital period, and they are very good at it.

Wall Street is also a lender to investors, offering what’s called margin debt. Here is how margin debt works. Let’s say that you want to buy $100 worth of stock but you only have $80 to spend. Using a margin account, you can borrow $20 to make the purchase (note: that margin requirements vary and are regulated). So, you put in $80 cash out of pocket and buy $100 worth of stock by borrowing $20. Obviously you pay interest on the $20 loan, but the market is returning 15%, and because you are a super cool customer you are allowed to borrow the $20 at the prime lending rate, currently 3.25%. So, your net positive spread is 11.75% on the $20 loan. Now, imagine the overall effect on billions of dollars in margin credit. The gains are huge!

For the sake of discussion, let’s say the stock you are buying is trading at $1 per share. If you use out of pocket money, your purchase is limited to 80 shares but with the $20 loan you can now buy 100 shares. This is what you’ll hear described as leverage. So, margin allows you to purchase a greater number of shares,  which when done on a large scale across the market creates a demand for stock (also called equity) that would not otherwise exist.

clip_image002

This is what margin debt looks like in March 2015. It is at historical highs. The chart that you see above is current to Feb 2015, and it clearly shows that margin debt is at historical highs. Why is there so much margin debt on the books, particularly in an economy that is only lukewarm; with a global picture where China’s economy is cooling and the EU is in recession? Very simply because institutional investors and corporations are borrowing at historically low rates and plowing huge amounts of money into a stock market that is returning 15%. Not bad hey! I pay 3.25% to borrow and get 15% on the borrowed money. This condition has several OH SHIT components to it.

1. Stock market returns are coming from investor demand for stock and not a strong economic rebound. Investors are buying so much equity and using so much margin debt that market growth is fueling itself. The underlying micro and macroeconomics aren’t providing the price support, it’s investors capitalizing on the spread that’s doing it, and if you can borrow for less than the market returns why not? To sustain this margin debt driven stock rally, now on its 5th year, the market needs to tout corporate earnings, which is the reason lower oil prices are viewed by Wall Street as a negative when in fact they are positive in the broad economy. I want to be cautious here because there are a number of  companies that are meeting and exceeding earnings driven by market share and sales. The best example is Apple who increased iPhone sales in China 72 percent. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, was quoted as saying “I’ve never seen as many people coming into the middle class as they are in China.” Sadly, he can’t say the same thing about his own country where Americans are falling out of the middle class. The point remains the same and that is that ballooning margin debt is driving market valuation.

2. In 2014, if you were a small business trying to get a bank loan chances are you were declined. In fact, across the 5 major banks, less than 22% of small businesses who applied for loans got them. Banks would rather lend to the financial markets than to small business. This is one component to the equation for low growth in employment. Who is it that creates jobs and drives economic growth? It’s Small Business, yet they continue to be underserved by the financial sector. Small Business owners have two competitors for financing, Wall Street and the U.S. Government, and that accounts for meager business lending.

3. We have a Federal Reserve that finds itself between a rock and a hard place. If they increase interest rates, it will dampen Wall Street borrowing, somewhat, and you’ll see the market  correct downward, but that interest rate increase would hit mortgages, consumer credit, business lending, durable goods, on and on. Since higher interest rates add to the everyone’s cost structure, across the board, you would also see prices increases. At this stage of the recovery, higher interest rates from the Fed would have the same effect as dumping a 55 gallon barrel of water on a smoldering campfire. Not Good! Now for the last OH SHIT…

4. Remember, that the house of cards needs to be able to show corporate earnings, to justify its continued rise. This will become increasingly more difficult if oil prices remain low or fall. And, with a slumping global economy, Wall Street will look to companies to improve earnings which managers will achieve by cutting payrolls and further outsourcing of production.

clip_image004

Don’t agree? Take a look at what margin debt has done from 2009 to March 2015 it’s dammed near a vertical line (the red line). So, where has the benefit of low interest rates gone?

Wall Street not Main Street!

Fixing the problem is going to require a couple of thing: first, a set of balls the size of bowling balls; second, a very hard look at regulations to tighten margin credit across the spectrum. I especially feel that trading commodities like oil on margin should be limited to those traders taking delivery of the commodity. On the fiscal side it may also be useful to reinstate differential tax treatment of short term and long term capital gains.

If you’ve draw the erroneous conclusion that I’m anti Wall Street, allow me to reaffirm that I’m not. A profitable, vibrant and healthy financial sector is essential to a strong economy, but boys will be boys, as we saw in the 2008 meltdown, and Wall Street’s profitability should never undermine fundamental economic growth and infrastructure.

So, what do you think about all this?

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s shoot-the-shit. Remember that profanity, unsupported opinions and changing subjects will not be censored. And, you’ll never see a bill from me!

Have a great weekend. Get out and do something with your buds and/or family!

ARSENAL Inc. Explains Product Availability of Its SLR-107FR and SLR-104UR rifles.

Arsenal Inc’s product availability notice applies only to the company’s highly successful SLR-107FR and SLR-104UR,

LAS VEGAS, NV – In the recent weeks, Arsenal, Inc. has been receiving a large number of calls and e-mails from our customers and dealers, inquiring about the SLR-107FR and SLR-104UR rifles. Regretfully, the supplies of these models have become scarce in the market. The SLR-107FR and SLR-104UR have been 2 of Arsenal’s top-selling items ever, and the demand has always been high for them.
Arsenal immensely values the US commercial market and our customers who are hunters, shooting sportsmen, collectors, 2nd Amendment supporters, and those who use our Modern Sporting Rifles and other products for self-defense. We try our best to do everything to satisfy your demands and provide products that you love and need. However, as you are aware, Arsenal also has serious military obligations throughout the world. Due to the current situation in the world and the sharp increase in violence in places such as Middle East and the demand to replenish countries’ militaries to constrain those who cause harm and evil, it has become necessary to shift Arsenal’s full concentration on fulfilling military contracts. This has caused sharp, but hopefully a short-lived halt in production of commercial products.
Currently, all SLR-107FR models, including SLR107-31, SLR107-32, SLR107-33, SLR107-34, and SLR107-36 configurations, and all SLR-104UR models with standard 16-inch barrel, including SLR104-51, SLR104-52, SLR104-53, and SLR104-54 configurations are temporarily out. All units have been shipped out of Arsenal to our distributors. Please inquiry with your dealers, distributors, or retail outlets for any availability for any units that are still in the pipeline.
We hope that the circumstances will normalize soon and these 2 popular models will be back in the market again. Thank you for your continued support and patronage.

DARPA Releases Updated Video of EXACTO

The Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program was initiated to develop a sniper system that makes engaging moving targets more predictable. The fundamental sniper problem is that a missed shot will alert combatants of their presence; therefore, successful single shot engagements are both desirable and important to mission success.

EXACTO, seeks to improve sniper effectiveness and enhance troop safety by allowing greater shooter standoff range and reduction in target engagement timelines. The objective of the EXACTO program was to revolutionize rifle accuracy and range by developing the first ever guided small-caliber bullet.

The EXACTO 50- caliber round and optical sighting technology was developed to greatly extend the day and nighttime range over current state-of-the-art sniper systems. The system combined a maneuverable bullet and a real-time guidance system to track and deliver the projectile to the target, allowing the bullet to change path during flight to compensate for any unexpected factors that may drive it off course.

The video represents the most recent test data published by DARPA. Impressive!

What The Hell Is Differential GPS?

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic consists of a quick tutorial on DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System). Why should you care?

Simple, it’s capable of 1 to 2 centimeter accuracy. DGPS is currently being used by surveyors and its is being broadly implemented by federal and local agencies. It has tremendous potential, so it’s important you understand it exists and what it can do for you. DGPS is a technology that should be made available to all users, and it wouldn’t hurt to chat with your local or federal elected officials to make it broadly available for commercial use. At least broach the subject with them.

DGPS uses the civil satellite constellation NOT the military system so there are no issues there. The system requires a base station with a GPS receiver that can interface to an r.f transmitter operating in the mid-frequency (MF) range, which is in the 300Khz range and a handheld or vehicle mounted GPS receiver with a built in receiver that can receive in the 300 Khz range.

Here’s how it all works.

Base Station

GPS positioning requires that the GPS receiver see a minimum of 4 satellites. The receiver then calculates the signals time differences and from that determines your position and elevation. In DGPS, the precise location of the base or reference receiver is already know. Knowing its precise location (usually surveyed), the base or reference receiver calculates what the signal time differences should be. It then compares the calculated time differences with the actual time differences for all the satellites it sees and arrives at a numerical value, or difference, referred to as the error or correction.

The base or reference station then formats a message, which includes the error or correction values for all of the satellites in its sky. That message is transmitted as part of a beacon signal in the 300Khz range.

Rover GPS Receiver

The roving GPS receiver then receives the reference station’s transmission, and from that transmission it extracts all of the corrections, or error values, for the satellites in its horizon. The GPS receiver then applies those corrections in its own calculation to determine position and elevation. Then end result is an extremely precise position.

The effective range of the systems is up to 200 kilometers depending on terrain. That means that any handheld or vehicle mounted GPS receiver, compatible with DGPS, can achieve extreme accuracy using the civil satellite constellation.

IWI’s eLOG Takes Over Where FNH SmartCore Leaves Off

LAAD 2015: IWI unveil small arms management concept

Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) announced at this year’s LAAD, in Rio, eLog. Succinctly, eLog is a weapon integrated IT management tool to identify weapon failures, establish preventative maintenance schedules, inventory control and physical tracking. IWI’s eLog goes beyond basic armorer needs delivering a comprehensive digitized solution for small arms inventories.

eLog consists of three subsystems: a weapon-embedded sensor module that records each time a round is fired; ruggedized handheld terminal readers that interact with the sensor modules and collects sensor stored data; and a PC-based armorer management application and database to processes data collected from the individual weapon. The software processes this data to produce a detailed view of each weapon’s status and performance.

eLog’s software then processes collected data to generate preventative maintenance reports; identify components that need to be replaced based on round counts, inventory control and other administrative support.

The 50,000 foot view of eLog is a structured small arms management system focused on proactive maintenance to avoid weapon failures.

Adaptive Tactical’s NON-LITE "Train Like They Fight" Without Risking Damage to their Tactical Flashlight

Nampa, Idaho (April 2015) – Adaptive Tactical, LLC,  introduce its NON-LITE designed to mimic the weight, balance and profile of a standard gun-mounted flashlight’’; allowing the operator to focus on intense training without risking damage to his or her actual flashlight.

“As professionals and masters of our trade, we need to ‘train like we fight.’ That means we have to become proficient with the extra weight of the light, the fit to the holster and have the ability for a smooth and fast holster draw. The big problem with this is in doing so, we are causing our weapon lights to have illumination failures, damaged lenses, blown bulbs, broken activation switches, cracked rails, broken locking tabs, battery failures and decreased lumens for nighttime training and operation when it is needed the most. The NON-LITE solves all of these problems while letting us train realistically,” said Ryan Ley, NON-LITE Inventor and USCG Trainer.

Although NON-LITE mimics the weight, balance and profile of a tactical flashlight, it costs a fraction of the price of a tactical light allowing military and law enforcement agencies to save thousands of dollars in equipment replacement costs.

Specifications:

  • Quick-detach thumb screw rail clamp
  • Weatherproof
  • Constructed of high-strength, durable glass-filled nylon plastic
  • Weighted to mimic actual light
  • Compatible with handguns/long guns with Picatinny or universal rails
  • Sized to exact dimensions to fit light-bearing holsters
  • MSRP $64.99

Ram Air RA-1 New Double Duty Parachute For SOF Parachutists

RA-1For our readers who live to jump out of perfectly good aircraft, you’ll be happy to know that SOF parachutists now have a Free Fall Advanced Ram-Air Parachute System, RA-1, which is built for static line or free fall operations. The U.S. Army’s 3rd SFG will be the first group to field the new canopy.

In addition to being configurable for static or free fall, the RA-1 increases the load capacity to 450 lbs. with an operational envelope of 3,500 MSL to 25,000 MSL.

The RA-1 has been undergoing rigorous testing since 2013 at Fort Bragg, N.C.,  and will replace the aging MC-4 parachute for all services. Testing of the RA-1 was supported by 30 static line qualified paratroopers from C Troop, 3rd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment at Joint Base-Lewis-McChord, Wash., and 50 military free fall paratroopers from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th Special Forces Command groups. Airborne and Special Operations Test Directorate, or ABNSOTD, testers conducted the operational test to validate the system’s effectiveness, suitability and safety, said the projects test plan analyst R. Manke.

“The RA-1 is an individual Soldier’s parachute system consisting of a main parachute, reserve parachute, harness and container,” Manke explained. “It is designed to allow insertion by both Military Free Fall and Double Bag Static Line techniques depending on mission deployment requirements.

“The system also allows for an increase in the jumper’s rigged weight of up to four hundred and fifty pounds,” he continued. “Additionally, the system is designed to deliver jumpers safely from aircraft flying at elevations from thirty-five hundred feet above ground level to twenty-five thousand feet mean sea level with an objective to go to thirty-five thousand [mean sea level] after follow-on testing.”

Do You Really Need A Ballistics Calculator?

This Friday’s shoot-the-shit topic is geared towards the tactical precision rifle folks in cyberspace. These are the folks that are called upon to take the shot but could really careless about producing ragged holes on the job.

So, here’s our question/challenge. Do you really need a ballistic calculator?

With the increased use of smart devices in the field, it seems like every one on the planet is coming up with ballistic apps. More recently, Peak Studios has introduced Ballistic for the iPhone. Android devices also have a plethora of apps to choose from. All of which are great, with varying degrees of sophistication, but they all suffer from a common problem, which is fitting them into real world scenarios. Ballistic calculators are wonderful when you are shooting at steel or paper out to extended ranges but they fall short in application because targets under“work” conditions have a nasty habit of not presenting themselves as frequently or predictably as you’d like. So here’s what I would like to suggest.

  1. Learn your more meaningful variables – mine are range, muzzle velocity (with and without suppressors) and density altitude.
  2. Learn to range accurately using your magnified optics. I say this because in future theaters you may encounter a combatant that can detect the LRF’s laser.
  3. Get a Kestrel meter (maybe two in case one craps out or is lost) and set it to read density altitude.
  4. Pick up Adaptive’s Field Density Altitude Compensator (FDAC)

Adaptive FDAC ranging card

Let us know what you think – agree or disagree. Insults and profanity will not be censored or if you’d like to change topics feel free to do so. It’s that weekly non-billable event that we call a shoot-the-shit.

Added

Why did I leave wind out as one of the more important variables?

All precision shooters know that wind is a consideration in deriving an accurate firing solution; yet, it remains the most illusive parameter to master. Shooters will use vegetation, mirage, smoke stacks, flags or just about anything that provides a clue as to its strength and direction. All well and good but the problem is much more involved and taking a reading from a wind meter at the shooter’s position does not get you there.

The effect of wind is a continuum lasting from the time the bullet exits the muzzle to the point of impact. For example, shooting across a saddle you may read a 9 o’clock, 7 mph wind at the shooter’s position, but as the bullet travels, the dip may have a 3 o’clcok 20 mph wind and still a different direction and value on the opposite peak. Urban areas are notorious for multiple wind vectors. The wind problem becomes even less manageable as range to the target increases so wind calls are almost always wrong.

DARPA and the U.S. Army has invested millions in developing a fire control system for snipers that detects all of the wind vectors along the bullet’s flight path in addition to the normal external ballistic parameters. Refer to “One Shot XG” where the objective is that illusive one-shot one-kill. You may also want to read on DARPA’s EXACTO project that attempts to develop a guided projectile and system to increase sniper standoff and effectiveness.

Reading wind, or the better expression estimating wind, is time consuming, laborious and almost always wrong so your best approach is to check the trace and correct fire on that basis. The most effective strategy is to close range as much as operational constraints allow.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Looking Ahead…

We’ve had a pretty busy Spring this year with a number of events that will generate articles throughout the summer months. We are also working on some edged weapon reviews from a number of manufacturers, and if you like the Japanese influence of John Williams you’ll want to tune in for that review.

We also want to reintroduce bore sights to our readers as they are particularly valuable in these times when availability of ammunition fluctuates widely and its cost risen dramatically. In discussing bore sights, one gets a sense that the general shooting public considers them a waste of time and money; it’s unfortunate, unfounded and influenced by operator issues and product selection. There are excellent bore sighting tools on the market and we will introduce you to just one. They aren’t inexpensive but they have a very short payback in reduced ammunition costs and platform independence. We’ll have that article up in May.

May also brings a review of one of Magpul Industries’ latest products. Regular readers know that we’ve described Magpul as one of the most innovative manufacturers and designers in the industry and our upcoming review supports that. We’ve also developed a matrix for you to use in determining Magpul product availability. We had a lot of fun with that and we think you’ll enjoy it.

With that, we thank you for being a reader, your comments, critiques and suggestions.

Accu-Grip for the AK-47

48f062ac-3e17-42e8-aad2-f5d502d06074

Las Vegas, NV, April, 2015. Accu-Grip www.accu-grip.net  – as a follow up on to their wildly efficient new adjustable AR-15 Grip, Accu-Grip is now producing another unique patented adjustable grip for the AK-47. This new grip fits the AK-47 and will increase trigger control and shooter efficiency resulting in better accuracy and fire control.

The key to accurate and quick shooting is trigger control, which can be improved by correct contact between the trigger finger and the trigger. The basic trigger length of an AK-47 is only 2-3/8 inches.

The AK-47 Accu-Grip allows the shooter to lengthen and incrementally adjust the critical grip-to-trigger contact–up to 31/4- inches if desired.* This distance (with any rifle) is a key ergonomic factor and fitted correctly can greatly improve trigger control resulting in more accurate and faster shooting.

Accu-Grip fits all original type stamped metal military (Soviet Bloc/Chinese MIL-SPEC) and commercial stamped metal AK Soviet/Chinese MIL-SPEC) lowers–but will NOT fit milled AK receivers. Each grip kit comes with the necessary hardware and Allen wrench for installation. Installation takes about ten minutes.

After installation, adjusting the grip to fit the individual shooter takes just a few seconds. Movement of the grip is accomplished in 1/10-inch incremental positive hold adjustments and, of course, the grip may be adjusted as many times as the shooter wishes.

MATERIAL: The patented and patent pending, all American-made Accu-Grip is molded with DuPont Zytel resin and long strand glass fibers, making it incredibly tough–tougher than the original grips.

COLORS: Accu-Grips are available in black, dark earth, OD green and desert sand. Other custom colors can be created in quantity on request.

PRICE: $39.95 MSRP.

*Note: Standard AK grip to trigger face is 23/8″; Accu-grip adjusts from 27/8″ to 31/4″.   Accu-Grip is also available for AR-15s and M-4s, same price, same colors, same  improvement in control.
