Kalashnikov Concern Announces A New 9mm Pistol For The Russian Army and Competition

GnZTQrVMoscow, 17 June 2015

Kalashnikov Concern revealed the prototype of a new 9mm pistol “PL-14” (Pistol designed by Lebedev) at the International military-technical Forum «ARMY-2015» from June, 16 to June, 19 in Kubinka (Moscow region). The concept of the pistol was developed jointly by the experts of the Russian special forces and IPSC competitive shooters.

The distinguishing feature of “PL-14” is its enhanced ergonomics and balance that meet modern notions of human biomechanics and modern pistol shooting techniques in the best way. Special attention was paid to the unique aesthetics of the new pistol.

“The versatility of our new pistol allows to use it not only as a military weapon for the military forces and police, but also as a pistol for different shooting competitions – said Kalashnikov CEO Alexey Krivoruchko. – We intend to produce different variants of the pistol, for example, with certain characteristics of the trigger mechanism for special forces units, as well as a civilian version with trigger that would be suitable for practical shooting competitions as well”.

The gun is very thin in comparison with its counterparts: the thickness of the grip is 28 mm and 21mm is the thickness at the front of the slide. All controls on the pistol are ambidextrous, so it could be used by right- and left- handed shooters effectively. The pistol has Picatinny rail integrated in its construction.

Automatic calculation methods applied during the creation of the gun, will ensure great reliability. With its improved ergonomics pistol has minimal recoil and muzzle rise which makes speed shooting very effective.

Particular attention is paid to the safety of this pistol: trigger mechanism ensures that there will be no mechanical accidental discharge, even after falling from a great height onto a hard surface. In addition, the basic version will have longer and heavier trigger to prevent accidental discharge if shooter keeps his finger on the trigger. On another version of the pistol for highly skilled users (special forces and competitive shooters), trigger will be lighter.

In addition, the increased safety of the new 9mm pistol is provided by loaded chamber indicator, which allows checking the weapon even in gloves and during low light situations. In addition, the indicator has an additional function: coupled with a modified geometry of the chamber it allows shooting with defective ammunition when brass size does not meet the specs.

More than 50 companies have reserved their spot in the Retail Village.

“We’ve created the firearms industry’s number one brand-building experiential marketing event,” the Texas Firearms Festival’s COO asserts. “It’s a Texas-sized live-fire gun show, where bullets go down range and cash changes hands. With our expanded Retail Village, FastPass VIP system, new Competition Zone and Austin food trucks, this year’s Texas Firearms Festival is bigger and better than ever.”

Last year, 83 percent of participants said the Festival influenced their choice of future firearms. If you want to fly the flag, meet the folks, shoot some guns and make customers for life, you need to be there.”

Post a Hunting Photo with Dad and Win Two X-Sight Rifle Scopes From ATN

South San Francisco, Calif. (June 2015) – American Technologies Network Corp. (ATN), innovators of advanced night vision, thermal imaging and digital Smart HD optics for hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, military and law enforcement, is pleased to announce a new photo contest, Generation X-Sight, in time for Father’s Day. The contest will award two X-Sight HD Rifle Scopes to the father and son/daughter duo whose photo of themselves hunting, shooting or enjoying the outdoors together receives the most likes. The entrant with the second most likes will win a Shot Trak HD Gun Camera.

Brian ‘Pigman’ Quaca and his dad, Tom ‘Dap’ Quaca

“Honor your dad this Father’s Day and share a picture of yourself spending time with him in the outdoors hunting or shooting; that’s what I’m going to do,” said Brian “Pigman” Quaca, host of The Sportsman Channel’s “Pig Man: The Series.”

“My dad taught me how to hunt and for a lot of families the love of hunting and the great outdoors is something that’s passed down through the generations from father to son or father to daughter. We wanted to celebrate Father’s Day and unite two generations of hunters by giving away the next generation of optics to a father and son or father and daughter duo,” said ATN’s Director of Marketing Chip Fong.

Prizes:

First prize will consist of two X-Sight HD Rifle Scopes (prize value $1258 – $1458) and will be given to the entrant with the photo that receives the most likes. The winner will be able to choose between either the 3-12x or 5-18x version of the scope or a combination of the two.

The X-Sight has a high resolution day/night sensor that can be switched between modes so that during the day the user can look through the high-definition scope like any other daytime scope, while at night or in darkness, the sensor can be turned on and the scope can be used like a night vision scope. The X-Sight can also take and record photos and high-definition video and has Wi-Fi and Geotagging capabilities so that hunters can share their adventures with their family and friends.

Second prize will be a Shot Trak HD Gun Camera (prize value $129) and will be given to the submitter of the photo that receives the second most likes.

The Shot Trak HD is a high-definition gun camera built for capturing personal outdoor adventures and has 5-times the magnification of any standard action camera. It is ruggedly built using military-grade materials and is tough enough for repeated recoil. The Shot Trak HD is capable of fully recording target practice, a hunt or outdoor action in full high-definition with sound. It operates with a simple toggle switch and is microSD compatible.

COLT DEFENSE IN BANKRUPTCY!

Colt Defense, a legendary part of America’s history, has been manufacturing firearms of exceptional quality and styling for over 100 years. They’ve been a prestigious player in the commercial sector; playing a major role in law enforcement and defense as well. The Connecticut-based company announced its decision on Sunday, 14 Jun 2015.

Colt’s official press release identifies Sciens Capital Management LLC as a likely buyer…

“Colt’s current sponsor, Sciens Capital Management LLC (‘Sciens’), has agreed to act as a ‘stalking horse bidder’ and has proposed to purchase substantially all of Colt’s assets and assume secured liabilities and all liabilities related to existing agreements with employees, customers, vendors, and trade creditors…”

We first reported on Colt’s financial challenges late last year. The company’s decision was probably triggered by its inability to meet a $10.5 million debt payment. Colt’s management sees itself coming out of bankruptcy in 60 to 90 days and has assured employees, customers, and distributors that supplies and operations would not be disrupted during the proceedings.

HK Adds A 40 Caliber Chambering To Its VP Line.

VP40-Right_Web

We spent some quality time with the HK folks at Shot Show 2015 where we got a top notch presentation on the HK’s new VP 9mm striker fired pistol. In our initial coverage we remarked that very few people knew that HK was producing striker fired pistols more than 30 years ago, the P7 for example.

While at Shot Show we asked HK about a .40 and .45 ACP VP series and received the affirmative leaving only the timeline in question. We are happy to report that the VP40 is now available and retains the same features that make the VP9 such a joy to shoot.

The VP40 has the same smooth and crisp as the VP9, and the VP40 grip is customizable fit most any shooter. Like the VP9, it uses three interchangeable backstraps and six grip panels.

As with the VP9, we aren’t electrified by the inclusion of charging supports on the slide. For us, it’s something to snag on. HK slide serrations are more than adequate but it is a feature that female shooters will probably like. Wisely, HK made the charging supports a removable item.

The VP40 is designed and manufactured in Oberndorf, Germany and covered by Heckler & Koch’s limited lifetime warranty. M.S.R.P. is $719 for the basic package and $819 for the LE package, which includes tritium night sights and 3 mags.

Reader Question: What Are Some Other Hacks?

Tony asked if I could identify other types of hacks. Hacks are numerous and can be quite elaborate so it’s difficult for me to alert you to more specific techniques. One that is particularly insidious, that’s not really a hack, but worth discussing is Bluetooth connectivity hacks, and individuals with Bluetooth capabilities on their smart device are particularly at risk if not cognizant of their exposure. The following is JUST ONE example…

Most late model automobiles have touch screens and are equipped with Bluetooth support to facilitate hands-free operation of the driver’s 3G or 4G smart device. This is true of rental cars as well as your personal vehicle.

If not configured correctly, the automobile’s computer will download call logs and contact lists from your smart device once a phone is connected via Bluetooth. This will usually happen automatically and in the background. They will also synchronize text messaging, referred to a SMS. This is a treasure trove of information that includes personal as well as business related data. It may even include credit card numbers and social security numbers.

So, to avoid inadvertent synchronization of your smart device’s data, ensure that its Bluetooth  support is disabled. Limit your data and voice activity to the 3G and 4G network which is encrypted.

Mommy Where Does Hacking Come From?

It’s Friday, 12 June 2015, and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. Last week, we explored the NSA and Metadata. We concluded by forming the opinion that bulk metadata collection does not constitute a privacy threat and that restricting NSA activity jeopardizes the agency’s ability to map possible terror cells and to be proactive in the fight against GWOT.

This week, we want to shed some light on hacking, some of its drivers and where does it come from. Other than for background purposes, we will exclude  malicious acts by a lone individual at a college campus or someone’s warped sense of humor, or desire for intrigue.

As I was growing up, a “hacker” was someone that could take the heat. Someone that would hang in the face of adversity to achieve his or her goal or their team’s goal. It wasn’t until about 1980-1982 that the word hacker took on a scent of disdain. However, hacking “officially” began 10 years earlier, circa 1971, when John Draper discovers that a toy whistle produced an exact 2600 Hz tone that would open a telephone line to place a long distance call. In 1975 the Homebrew Computer Club of California, built the infamous “blue box” that allowed its designers to hack the telephone network. Those designers are today household names; Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs who went on to found Apple Computer in Cupertino, California. Other incidents, most of which were hacks to the national telephone network. increased in number through 1987. The objective? To defeat the toll network so that unbillable phone calls could be made or malicious attempts at disrupting call routing. It was not until 1987-1988 that “Brian”, the first known MS-DOS computer virus was released.

Hacking took on a more serious face in 1989 when Five West German computer users were arrested on espionage charges after an administrator at UC Berkeley detected and tracked their intrusions into U.S. government and university computer systems. The hackers were charged with selling information and software to the KGB. All three were convicted and sentenced to prison terms but none of the hackers ever spent any time behind bars. In 1995, Russian hacker Vladimir Levin was arrested in the U.K. after using his laptop to break into Citibank’s computer network and transfer funds to various accounts around the world. The exact amount of money stolen by Levin remains unknown; estimates range between $3.7-$10 million.

The catalyst for nearly all of these hacks are financial gain or intelligence gathering. I use intelligence as a catch-all term for gaining technical detail or operational information. All of these attacks had one characteristic in common, they were all frontal assaults on enterprise main frame computers or networks.

Industry responded by strengthening router software closing numerous ports and installing dedicated computers to run firewalls. Firewall software is installed on routers and/or dedicated computers who’s functions are to deny access to network computers and other resources. Rarely did you see a direct attack on an individual’s desktop computer. That too would rapidly change and the overwhelming majority of hacking today is accomplished through the installation of malware on desktop computers, laptops and network connected smart devices. Individuals receive e-mail messages, quite often from someone they think they know, and are then provided with a link or directing them to a site that uploads malware on the victim’s machine. File attachments are also commonly used to plant malware on a user’s device. Once installed, hackers are able to collect keystrokes, login-IDs and passwords.

Hacking and hacking attempts have increased exponentially. Targets are government agencies, healthcare organizations, military services, critical infrastructure, financial institutions, mobile network providers and even retail business. The objectives remain the same, collecting technical detail and collecting intelligence. I ‘d like to run you through this simple example…

Hackers attack Gmail servers and over a period of several hours, or days, download several hundred thousand e-mail addresses – to make things even simpler, let’s say that no e-mail messages are compromise. Each and every e-mail address collected is a target for malware implantation. Making matters worse, many individuals use personal computers to access work related resources, so malware not only collects their login information but replicates itself inside the firewall. The malware can then spread through a network were it infects several users who may have access to sensitive data. This is a very simple scenario but it happens each and every day, and the real scope of hacks is grossly understated because the victim organizations would prefer to keep the event out of the news for a variety of reasons including avoiding financial liability.

What are the hacking accelerants?

  • Outsourcing the manufacture of network resources like routers and gateways.
  • Outsourcing the manufacture of smart devices and computer resources. Regardless of what anyone tells you, it is possible to introduce microcode that will open a port that is otherwise closed. Luckily there are ways to test for that but do manufacturer’s test each and every device that rolls of the production line? No!
  • We outsource testing. Software manufacturer’s and system integrators are quick to point out that ONLY testing is done offshore. You don’t need a computer science degree to deduce that testing provides visibility to weaknesses and how to exploit them.
  • We outsource software development and folks like IBM and Microsoft have large offshore development operations.
  • Lastly, technology departments at universities are 60%-80% foreign students especially at the graduate level. These individuals do not undergo background checks so it’s virtually impossible to filter out potential problems, especially at the graduate levels. The late 1970’s and early 1980’s saw a veritable cornucopia of “industrial” espionage, in California’s Silicon Valley, many resulting from intern graduate students. However, foreign student tuition payments represent a huge percentage of a universities’ revenue stream.

So what can be done to mitigate the risks?

Most of it is harsh, but tough problems require tough actions. Here are some of our suggestions.

  • Develop and implement a National Cyber Strategy – Congressional action is required.
  • Prohibit business computational resources from being used for personal use.
  • Outlaw the use of personal computational resources, to include smart devices, on business networks. Make it a firing offense!
  • Prosecute, prosecute, prosecute
  • Require background checks of foreign students in technical fields at the graduate levels (computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, physics, bio-technologies, etc.)
  • Recognize that state sponsored hacking exists and is an active part of a foreign government’s military and industrial complex.
  • Consumer awareness. One possible solution can include an interactive training session that plays on initial power up of any new computer purchase.

As with all shoot-the-shit sessions, you can say whatever you like without supporting your statements with facts, in expressing yourself profanity is permissible – even if you’re a boatswain mate and last but not least you can change the subject all together.

Have a Great Weekend Readers!

Mission First Tactical Introduces New Tekko Metal KeyMod Picatinny Rails and Sling Mounts

Horsham, Pa. (June 2015) – Mission First Tactical, LLC (MFT), developer of select rifle/carbine accessories specifically for the military, law enforcement and civilian sport shooting markets, is proud to introduce the Tekko Metal KeyMod 3″ and 6″ Rails and the Quick Detach Sling Mount.

“Our Tekko Metal KeyMod Picatinny Rails and Sling Mounts are made of the highest quality material available. These rails and mounts get the job done right every time and don’t quit, period. We’re proud of them and we know you’ll like them,” said MFT’s Vice President David Edelman.

3″ Tekko Picatinny Rail mounted on KeyMod hand guard

The 3″ and 6″ rails are MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny Rails that will mount to any KeyMod mounting surface. The rails are made out of high quality Type 3 hard coat anodized 6061 aluminum. The rails are easy to attach and remove and include a self-contained assembly that eliminates the common problem of losing the mounting hardware. These Picatinny rails allow for the mounting of mission specific accessories that wouldn’t be possible with the stock handguard.

Tekko KeyMod Quick Detach Sling Mount

The Tekko Metal KeyMod Quick Detach Sling Mounts are designed for use with the standard push-button quick-detach sling swivel. The sling mount can attach to any KeyMod surface. The sling mounts are made out of lightweight Type 3 hard coat anodized 6061 aluminum. They are low-profile, snag resistant and feature a braked, 4-position (360 degree) non-rotating, locking surface. Like the rails, the sling mounts also include a self-contained assembly.

Both the Tekko Metal KeyMod Rails and the Sling Mounts are made with pride in the USA and have a lifetime warranty. The 3″ rail retails for $24.99, the 6″ for $39.99 and the Quick Detach Sling Mount for $19.99. They can be purchased on the Mission First Tactical website.

REVISION WINS NEW $20 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY SILENT WATCH BATTERY PACK SYSTEMS FOR CANADA

Montreal,  Quebec (June 9, 2015)- Revision Military, a world leader in integrated,  purpose-built soldier solutions, has won a $20 million, multi-year contract through General Dynamics Land Systems Canada to provide Energy Storage Systems to retrofit RECCE 6.0 LAV vehicles that will silently power on-board sensor suites.  The Revision system, built around its NERV CENTR SWatPack™ scalable battery system, is capable of operating in a wide range of hot and cold temperatures and climatic conditions beyond the objective eight-hours of Silent Watch powering time. The Revision battery system provides more silent watch time than 30 standard 6T format AGM batteries at less than half the weight.

This fully customized, ballistic-protected solution re-purposes the winch pocket on the RECCE 6.0 LAV vehicles to house this optimized energy storage with a plug-and-play modular solution that can be serviced in the field.

“Both the silent watch energy storage solution and winning this contract are a testament to the Revision team of experts from the industrial designers, engineers and software programmers to the technical support and product management personnel who worked together to ensure a unique result for the Canadian DND” said Jonathan Blanshay, CEO of Revision.  He further stated, “Power is possibly one of the most critical elements for success on the battlefield today, whether for the individual soldier to ensure uninterrupted performance of his powered gear or for situations where silent delivery of power in varying conditions over an eight hour time frame is essential.  Revision is a solutions provider that employs science, cutting-edge technology and an innovation-driven approach to solving complex battlefield problems.  We are excited to demonstrate our capabilities in the field of energy storage and power management with this contract.”

Development of scalable, upgradable vehicular power management and energy storage capabilities is a natural extension for Revision as the principles behind the design of this example, the Silent Watch Battery System, draw on the philosophy of providing technologically advanced products that focuses on meeting mission needs.  This design philosophy has allowed Revision to deliver numerous protective products to individual soldiers from lightweight helmets to integrated facial protection, ballistic eyewear and personal power systems.

Effective immediately, ROC co-lead Director Jim (“Marco”) Marcotuli has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, and Board member James P. (“Jim”) Campbell has been appointed Vice Chairman of the Board. Mr. Marcotuli will also serve as interim Chairman of the Board. George Kollitides II, Chairman and CEO, and the Company have agreed that Mr. Kollitides will step down from both positions immediately to pursue other interests but will continue to serve as a paid Senior Advisor to the Company for one year.

“It has been a tremendous privilege to lead America’s oldest and most iconic gun company,” said Mr. Kollitides. “I could not be more proud of our organization and have the utmost confidence in the new management team’s ability to continue to successfully lead ROC in the future.”

Additionally, ROC’s Chief Financial Officer Ron Kolka is retiring but will remain with the Company for the next 30 days to ensure a smooth transition. A search for a permanent CFO is currently underway.
ROC also announced today that Jeffrey (“Jeff”) P. Pritchett will join ROC’s Board of Directors as part of the Company’s broader efforts to build a world-class Board infused with independent talent and the industry, financial and operating

The Company has also initiated a search for a Chairman of the Board and may appoint additional Directors to replace Walter McLallen and James J. Pike, who have also decided to retire from the Board.
Mr. Marcotuli, who was appointed to serve as co-lead director of ROC in September 2014, has spearheaded a series of operational improvements across the Company with an emphasis on ensuring consistently high-quality manufacturing, enhanced customer experience and more efficient operations. He has 25 years of management and operations experience, most recently serving as President and CEO of North American Bus Industries (NABI), where he successfully boosted the company’s market share while significantly growing earnings and revenue. Prior to that position, Mr. Marcotuli held senior leadership roles at various companies, predominately in the aerospace and automotive industries.

In his new role at ROC, Mr. Campbell will support Mr. Marcotuli in building ROC’s brands and optimizing customer experience.

“I look forward to supporting Marco and the rest of the team as we redouble our efforts to ensure superior quality and customer service are front and center in everything we do,” said Mr. Campbell. “On behalf of the Board, I also want to thank George for all of the contributions he has made to the Company over the past three years and to wish him well in all of his future endeavors.”

Mr. Pritchett brings significant financial and strategic planning expertise to the Board, most recently as a Senior Operating Executive and Head of the Finance / CFO
practice within Cerberus Operating and Advisory Company. He has been advising the management and finance teams at ROC for the past few months, providing a smooth transition as the Company completes its search for a permanent CFO.

Streamlight Introduces Its Newest Rail Mounted Light TLR-6

EAGLEVILLE, PA, June 3, 2015– Streamlight introduced the TLR-6, an ultra-compact, extremely lightweight weapons light with a red laser, designed to attach to the trigger guard of the Glock® 42 and the Glock® 43 Pistols. The product, the first light and laser combination of its kind for sub-compact pistols, is designed to maximize visibility and long-range targeting capability in a variety of home defense and tactical applications.

“The TLR-6 is a real game changer, the first product of its kind in an emerging category to combine a light and laser in one super-compact package that is designed for Glock 42/43 sub-compact pistols,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “Home defense and other tactical users can benefit from its ability to provide targeted bright light down range, as well as its powerful red aiming laser. The light is designed to quickly and securely attach to the trigger guard of the Glock 42 or 43. It also can be stored on these guns so users can more readily identify a potential threat before taking any action.”

The TLR-6 uses the latest in C4® LED technology to deliver 100 lumens, 2,000 candela and a beam distance of 89 meters. Its parabolic reflector produces a balance of beam and peripheral illumination. The light features three lighting modes:  LED Only, LED/Laser, and Laser Only, with operating run times of one hour for the LED Only or LED/Laser modes, and 11 hours for the Laser Only model.  All modes automatically shut off after ten minutes to conserve batteries. The light also uses a 640-660 nm red laser which has an operating temperature range of -20°F to +120°F, permitting usage under a wide variety of weather conditions.

The TLR-6 is powered by two 3 Volt CR-1/3N lithium coin batteries.  It features an integrated battery door that permits batteries to be replaced while the light remains mounted on the gun, and eliminates the need to re-sight the laser after a battery change.

The light is manufactured from durable, impact-resistant engineering polymer, measuring 2.30 inches long and weighing 1.27 ounces.  It is IPX4 rated for water-resistant operation, and also is impact-resistant tested to one meter.

The TLR-6 comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. The MSRP is $175.00.
