DSEI 2015 Selex ES Announces The Compact HH-E Software Defined Radio

_DSC9567-015cropped_t9GpO9SAt DSEi 2015, Finmeccanica – Selex ES introduced its new SWave™-family Software Defined Radio (SDR), named the Hand Held Evolution (HH-E). Designed to bring commercial smartphone size and weight characteristics to military-qualified battlefield radio equipment, the SWave™ HH-E weighs less than 550 grams and measures just 155mm x 70mm x 40mm.

The HH-E is the latest in Selex ES’s SWave™ software defined radio family, which offer reconfigurable secure data and wideband networking capabilities in addition to standard voice communication. The HH-E is compliant to the US SCA 2.2.2 and European ESSOR architectures. This means that the radios can be upgraded to new waveforms as they become available. The radio has been launched with the Soldier Broadband Waveform (SBW). A narrow-band waveform will be available early 2016.

The Selex ES SWave™ SDR family includes the latest single channel hand-held SDR (HH-E), a 2 channel manpack SDR (MB1), a 2 channel vehicular SDR (VB1) and a 4 channel vehicular SDR (VQ1). An earlier variant of the SWave™ HH-E, the SWave™ HH, is currently in-service with the Italian Army. A naval SWave™ SDR product is also in development.

Beretta Unveils It’s New 7.62×51 Platform The ARX200 AT DSEI London

At this year’s DSei, Beretta unveiled its newest vision for a Designated Marksman Rifle. The ARX200 chambered in 7.62×51 features a free floated 16 inch barrel on an aluminum reinforced polymer chassis.
Operating controls are all ambidextrous and include bolt release, magazine release and safety. The ARX200 also features a folding and collapsible stock with adjustable cheek rise.
Absent from the design is the quick change barrel assembly found on the ARX160. The charging handle is interchangeable from side to side but ejection is fixed on the left side.
Ergonomics is very similar to the company’s ARX160 but parts commonality is limited to the trigger subassembly.
Although not officially designated as a DMR by Beretta the ARX looks pretty DMRish to us with its stated 1.5 MOA performance at 100m.

MPA’s New MPA20DMG 9mm Carbine Features A Full-size Frame, Folding Adjustable Stock and Machined Aluminum Lower.

MasterPiece Arms (MPA), announced its new MPA20DMG 9mm Carbine from the DMG (Defender, Machined, Grip) Series. The 9mm Carbine is based on the 930DMG Pistol but comes in a full-size frame with a folding stock and features a lower receiver machined from aerospace-grade aluminum.

“I can’t help but get excited when I think about this gun. We put a lot of thought into designing it and feel it’s perfect for people that need a reliable, accurate and high-capacity home defense carbine,” said Phil Cashin, owner of MasterPiece Arms.

The carbine comes with many next-gen features. The lightweight lower receiver is machined from aerospace-grade aluminum, giving it a lean and mean look and feel. The free floating handguard is produced from an aluminum extrusion with no fasteners and has an inner diameter of 1.570 inches. The gun comes standard in a “Burnt Bronze” Cerakote finish, giving it a toughness that allows it to handle any abuse or punishment that may come its way. It is also available in Black, Flat Dark Earth, Gunmetal and Tungsten. It has an ergonomically designed grip system incorporating a “Solidworks” designed profile that allows for the use of standard GLOCK-style magazines, as well as a low profile magazine release and “Decal Grips” grip panels that provide the shooter’s hands with a secure hold on the gun. The MPA20DMG Carbine features a folding stock with an adjustable length of pull. This carbine is further equipped with adjustable front and rear sights, side cocker, scope mount, barrel extension, hammer with disconnect (plus original hammer) and comes in an MPA polymer case.

It’s Friday, we’ve made it through another week and the weekend is upon us, so it is time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. All shoot-the-shit rules apply; by the way, some of you noticed that on 9/11 we did not publish a shoot-the-shit topic. This was a conscious decision to honor those who lost there lives on 9/11. So, without further ado, we announce our shoot-the-shit topic for today….

Why is manufacturing leaving the country?

Ans: Is not our corporate tax rates.

The profit and loss statement above, belongs to Ford Motor Company. It is a condensed version for clarity but all figures are actual and stated in thousands.

Let’s take a look at Ford’s effective tax rate, which is calculated by dividing the income tax expense of $1.156 billion by the company’s income before tax of $4.342 billion and multiplying by 100. So let’s do that

1.156 / 4.342 = 26.62% This is Ford’s effective tax rate for 2014

To put things into perspective let’s compare Ford’s tax picture with a Hypothetical American dual earner household with two children and a home interest deduction. So, here we go…

Gross Income: $ 350,000 Deductions: $43,000  The taxpayer’s tax liability is $74,651.

Graphic 1

Our citizen tax payer’s  average or effective tax rate is 21% compared to Ford’s 26.62%. I think it’s safe to say that Ford is not having its brains bashed in, sufficiently, to chase them out of the country? So, why are they building plants in Mexico and not in the United States?

To answer this question revisit Ford’s Profit and Loss Statement. Ford’s Total Revenue for 2014 was $144.077 Billion and the company’s Cost of Revenue was $126.215 Billion or 87.6% of Total Revenue. Now let’s take a look at Cost of Revenue. This is a number that consists of a variety of expenses that includes, direct labor, the parts and materials needed to build cars and other expenses that are directly attributable to production.

If by moving to Mexico, Ford can lower the Cost of Revenue from 87.6% to say 77.6% through cheap labor and purchasing cheaper parts from local manufacturers, Ford Motor can reduce its cost of revenue from $126.215 Billion to $111. 804 Billion, a savings of $14.346 Billion.

Earlier, we said that Ford’s effective tax rate is 26.62%, now let’s assume we enact tax laws capping Ford’s effective tax rate to 20%; that’s a savings of 6.62% on Income before taxes of $4.342 Billion, which translates to a savings of $287.440 Million

Moving to Mexico achieves a $14.346 Billion savings  vs. a $287.440 Million tax savings. Obviously Ford’s desire is to do as much of its manufacturing outside the United States and see a lower corporate tax rate; however, lowering the corporate tax rate alone does very little  to entice the company to build plants in the United States. A reduction in corporate and individual tax rates is ALWAYS highly desirable, but is it the driving reason manufacturers are leaving the country? In most cases the answer is No!  Let us know what you think!

Have a safe weekend. Get out to the range or do something with your buds and family!

TNVC Has A High Utility Accessory For You–The Batteryclip

Batteryclip_af-1.jpgThe BATTERYCLIP provides a highly-functional way to organize, store, and transport commonly-used batteries.  A familiar magazine-style design keeps batteries protected from damage, dirt, and debris, while assuring they do not accidentally discharge.  Because everything runs on batteries, it is very common to have a handful of extras tossed in a bag or loose in a pouch.  This makes them hard to find in the dark, while digging through a pack and increases the danger of them overheating by coming into contact with a conductive surface.  Designed by a veteran sound engineer for onsite cameramen, the BATTERYCLIP is a safe and convenient method to keep batteries on hand.

The BATTERYCLIP uses a spring-loaded follower to push fresh batteries to the top of the device where they are easily deployed by pushing out with your thumb.  A “round count” indicator on the back of the BATTERYCLIP immediately shows how many are left.  The smooth, snag-free exterior surface allows it to easily  be slid in and out of pockets, pouches, and packs.

Batteryclips are available for AA, CR123A and 9V batteries M.S.R.P. $19.95

PerSys S.O.S. Definitely Add This To Your IFAK!

image

PerSys has introduced a dressing that I’ll simply describe as fast-food for treatment of an open chest wound. It address all of the important issues encountered by anyone attempting to deal with an open chest wound in less than optimal conditions. Add the S.O.S to your medical kit!

PerSys S.O.S., is an advanced occlusive dressing developed for the treatment of open chest wounds and for the prevention of tension pneumothorax.

The PerSys S.O.S. utilizes an ultra-strong, medical-grade hydrogel adhesive which clings to skin despite blood, sweat, hair, sand, or water. The dressing’s four vent design allows for one-way airflow out of the chest cavity during exhalation, while preventing airflow into the chest cavity during inhalation.

Unlike more complicated “valve systems” which are prone to clogging, the rugged simplicity of the S.O.S. stands up to water, sand, mud, debris, and bodily fluids. The dressing’s compact packaging and 3 year shelf life make it an ideal component of any kit.

Noveske Releases OAF Nation Rifle

Noveske Rifleworks,  announced the limited release of a collaboration rifle with OAF Nation. OAF Nation is a veteran advocacy group that often laces important social and political issues (along with current events) with their own style of irreverent humor.

“We’ve wanted to do a collab with an AR company for a while now but there were so many out there that just weren’t the right fit for us. On top of that we would never put our seal on or endorse a product that we haven’t used ourselves. When the opportunity arose for a collab with Noveske I was overwhelmed with pride. I ran a Noveske as a PMC in environments from Shash Darak to Wardak, Afghanistan. Out of all the weapons I put rounds through downrange, the Noveske was the ONLY platform that never once failed on me or the men on my project. Rain, sleet, snow, or sand; it was always ready to go. Could not be happier with how this AR came out and really grateful to Mike Aland and Noveske for making this happen.”  Said the founder of OAF Nation.

“Upon hearing about his experiences with our product, it became a special project. Noveske has a rich history of providing rifles to those in harms way, and we take great pride in the reliability and accuracy of our rifles.” Added Mike Aland, CMO at Noveske.

The companies have also teamed to launch a video that captures the rifle in an interesting shooting scenario with all of the hallmarks that make up a Noveske rifle combined with some of the sensibilities of the OAF Nation.

The rifle, available in three colors, goes on sale today at noveske.com. Featuring our Gen 1 forged receiver set, 14.5” pinned and welded skinny barrel, and 13.5” NSR hand guard, OAF engraving, and will also ship in a California compliant configuration.

MSRP:   $1995

Today We Remember September 11, 2001

Fourteen years ago today,  I was in California preparing to leave on a business trip when I watched in awe the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers. On that day, more than 3,000 wonderful loving people lost their lives at the hands of 19 men who had absolutely nothing to contribute to humanity. I will never forget that lump in my stomach and subsequent anger as more information was revealed.

Today, we honor the men, women and children who perished on that horrific day. We honor the passengers on Flight 93 who displayed amazing courage as they fought rather than subject. Their courage prevented what was surely destined to be an attack on our nation’s capital. We also remember those who lost their lives at the Pentagon on this fateful day.

All of these men and women, along with all those who risk life and limb in pursuit of the Global War on Terror, hold a very special place in our nation’s history and in our hearts.

We remember you and we will never forget!

Fabryka Broni Showcases Its New Line Of Assault Rifles Designated Modular Small Arms System MSBS 5.56mm

Polish Small Arms manufacturer, Fabryka Broni, unveiled its full line of assault rifles, in carbine and bullpup configurations at the MSPO Defense Exhibition in Kielce. The new rifle is available in 11 variants all chambered in 5.56mm N.A.T.O. Five of the 11 weapons are offered in bullpup configurations.

The MSBS line has a unique upper receiver assembly that supports interchangeable barrel assemblies which allows the rifle to be converted from carbine to sniper rifle or squad level LMG,  handguards, a classic lower receiver with a collapsible stock, or in bullpup configuration.

In the Fabryka Broni design, the upper receiver assembly is the The Polish Modular Small Arms System calibre 5.56 mm (MSBS-5.56) family of assault rifles in bullpup configuration. (Fabryka Broni)“center of the universe” upon which all things are attached, including a bullpup configuration, in contrast to our AR-15 designs where the lower receiver is the base upon which the weapon is built.

The MSBS is scheduled to also replace the Russian SKS carbines currently used by Polish ceremonial units.

At SHOT SHOW 2015, in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to speak with a representative who indicated the company’s plan to open a Texas manufacturing facility to make the MSBS rifles for the U.S. commercial space.

Personal Eye System (PES) By Mil Sistemika

pes-dismounted-commander

I finally had a chance to sit-down and write a review on what I think is one of the best Blue Force Tracking, Situational Awareness, C4ISR packages C.O.T.S. on the market. When used with PES Server, this feature rich, easy to use Android app supports a full set of navigation functions, COP (Common Operating Picture) updates, blue force tracking and remote sensor integration. MIL Sistemika offers two version of the PES app, commercial and professional. I have the opportunity to review both.

Off the shelf, professional training organizations, government agencies and law enforcement will find that PES meets or exceeds the majority of their requirements including a high level of data encryption; however, MIL Sistemika is a full system integrator capable of tailoring their C4ISR suite to meet your requirements.

If you’re an Airsoft enthusiast, or don’t require all of the features of the professional version of PES, the commercial version is available at a very reasonable price as is a PES Server subscription to provide real-time data sharing. PES runs on an Android platform. You’ll want to check PES out for sure but first read my review…

Understanding Wiping (Not Related To Potty Training)

It’s hard to keep a straight face after this title but I’ve decide to write a short piece on the topic to help readers understand how things work with a server.

A computer, or server, is a group of electronic assemblies operating under the direct control of the operating system. Operating systems include Windows, Linux, iOS, Android etc. A large part of the operating systems’ role is organizing data on a hard drive or other form of mass storage like and SD card. A hard drive which is customarily used on servers, laptops and desktop computers is very much like a record player. The platter spins at a high r.p.m. and the drive heads float over the platter’s surface. Those heads move through an actuating arm so the heads can be positioned to write to or read data from the rotating platter. All of that occurs under the operating system’s control.

When you write a letter or an e-mail message the operating system saves the data to the hard drive. Part of the process entails the creation of an index that points to where on the platter’s surface the file is stored. A file is not stored contiguously on the platter surface, it’s actually stored across a number of physical locations. Using those pointers, the operating system is able to then locate the data for later use. The same is true when you receive and e-mail or save any data to the hard drive, a pointer is created that identifies the physical location(s) on the platter where the data is stored. Once a location is used, it is no longer available for other files.

When you delete a file, you’re not erasing its actual data; you are erasing the pointers to that file. With the pointers gone, the operating system sees that physical location as being available for data storage. So, when you highlight an e-mail message and click on “Delete” you are simply removing the pointer to that e-mail. However, its text remains on the drive until it’s overwritten by the operating system.

Over time and with continuous use, a drive can become fragmented. This means that pieces of a file are scattered all over the surface of the platter. Imagine a vinyl LP where you have to continuously move the record player’s arm to listen to a single track. Fragmentation reduces the computer’s efficiency and speed. Operating systems include a utility, which when executed gathers up all of a file’s fragments and attempts to store them closer together or contiguously on the platter surface. This is a routine maintenance function that should be scheduled at standard intervals.

Wiping a drive is a process requiring dedicated software; separate from the operating system. When you wipe a drive, the software overwrites all parts of a drive for where there are no pointers. With the pointers missing, the wipe software sees a space not occupied by a live file and overwrites that space with things like ASCI Null characters, zeros, exclamation points or any other character. The objective is to overwrite whatever was originally in that space so that any old data is indiscernible. Wiping a drive is a tedious process and in order for it to be effective the software needs to run a minimum of 7 passes. Wiping a large capacity drive can take days, depending on the system. Wiping a drive does nothing to improve system performance. When properly performed it simply ensures that data previously stored on the target drive is indiscernible.

Relationship Between Muzzle Blast And Ballistic Crack

Once more Friday is  upon us and unless you’ve done something really stupid, you’ve successfully navigated through another week. To celebrate that success, our weekly shoot-the-shit topics allow you to make unsupported statements, use profanity, insult anyone you wish or change subjects altogether! Normally this would run you hundreds of dollars from a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist or philosopher but we now these professionals (Ha! Ha! Ha!) are no more than ambulatory proof that free market economies produce sufficient surplus to support their ass, and for that reason you’ll never see a bill from us. So, without further a do, let’s leap right into our shoot-the-shit topic of the week – Relationship Between Muzzle Blast And Ballistic Crack.

Muzzle blast, is a sound wave propagating 360°  from the weapon’s muzzle as high pressure gases in the bore are uncorked by the escaping bullet. Ballistic Crack is the sound wave created by the bullet traveling faster than Mach 1.

Suppressed weapons can be fired with subsonic ammunition or supersonic ammunition. In applications were it is desirable to eliminate ballistic crack we use subsonic ammunition. In making that decision we sacrifice range, and compensate for a loss in kinetic energy by utilizing a heavier projectile. When our target is at a longer range or it’s not possible to close range to the target and still maintain stealth, we use supersonic ammunition. A supersonic round preserves the effective range performance of the caliber but its flight to the target will generate an audible ballistic crack.

Muzzle Blast - Ballistic Crack

There’s an interesting relationship between muzzle blast and ballistic crack, muzzle blast leads ballistic crack; in fact, muzzle blast overruns the exiting projectile within its first 2 feet of flight. At this point, the muzzle blast wave slows and subsides. The ballistic crack wave is characteristically different from muzzle blast in that it propagates as a cone. At muzzle velocities that cone is approximately 130°  decreasing to 0 °  as the bullet approaches Mach 1 or 1116 feet per second. As that cone decreases so does our ability to hear ballistic crack downrange. M118LR for example will reach Mach 1 at approximately 985 meters.

Sound suppressors are designed to eliminate muzzle blast and flash signature; however, when used with supersonic ammunition you can expect some degree of exposure from ballistic crack. The effect of ballistic crack is diminishing with range and appears to be limited to a maximum of 130°  which  is at the muzzle.

Chime in and let us know what you think!

Have an Outstanding Labor Day weekend, be safe, get out to the range or do something fun with your buds and family!

TPG Rapid Load-Out Bag, Regular Size, Gen 2, Receives High Marks From NTOA Member Tested and Recommended Program

Boynton Beach, Fla. (September 2015)Tacprogear (TPG), a leading manufacturer of tactical equipment used by professionals around the globe, is proud to announce that the Rapid Load-Out Bag, Regular Size, Gen 2 (RLO1-G2) received a 4.54 out of a possible 5 from the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) Member Tested and Recommended Program. TPG has the privilege of displaying the prestigious NTOA Member Tested and Recommended Logo in their marketing materials.

The testing officer from Virginia, who used the bag in a number of applications, including a gym bag, weekend travel bag, moderate-sized tactical equipment bag, range bag and patrol vehicle bag, commented that the RLO1 “seemed to hold much more gear than you would expect.” He remarked that the “main compartment of the bag features a clam shell design opening which permits the flap to be folded back when unzipped, exposing an area almost the same size as the center compartment, which aids in packing and unpacking and in quickly locating gear.”

Another favorite feature of the bag for the Virginia testing officer was the tarpaulin bottom material. He said “this bag spent its time on different surfaces, including gravel and asphalt, and there were no major signs of wear and no sign of moisture finding its way inside. The bottom also kept the bag upright; it would not collapse on itself when completely open, a nice touch when you’re trying to rapidly locate equipment inside.”

The testing officer from Ohio commented that the “bag is a perfect size for the important gear needed in the field. The pockets are roomy, the bag is durable and the zippers and zipper pulls are very durable. Overall, it is a very usable, handy bag.”

The Rapid Loud-Out Bag, Regular Size, Gen 2, was designed to be an operator-friendly gear and travel bag, ready to carry all essential equipment no matter the mission. It includes new features such as an innovative tarpaulin bottom material for improved wear during adverse conditions, an embroidered TPG logo and redesigned TPG zipper pulls. It also features a specially designed clamshell opening to maximize access to gear and a central compression strap to help cinch the load and avoid additional stress on the zipper. It includes TPG’s signature MOLLE Spine design and is available in Black, Coyote Tan and OD Green. The main compartment measures 11″ D x 20″ W x 11″ H, with the external pocket measuring 2″ D x 9″ W x 9″ H. MSRP is $132.

The resource website provides information from nearly two dozen manufacturers and covers more than 2,000 holsters. Those numbers will grow as the website is updated—and expanded—on a regular basis. Crimson Trace partners with numerous holster suppliers and manufacturers, including: BLACKHAWK!, Blade-Tech, CrossBreed, DeSantis, Galco, Mitch Rosen, Tactical Tailor, Bravo Concealment, and others.

Crimson Trace customers already know that when a new Crimson Trace product is released to retail outlets, the holsters are also readily available for purchase. Crimson Trace works closely with holster manufacturers as they develop forms and holsters. All the details—and results—are provided at www.holsterresourceguide.com.

Another source of holsters is Crimson Trace’s online store found at www.crimsontrace.com. The website offers a full line of holsters—detailed in images—that will fit many handguns, including: 1911s, Beretta, Kimber, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, and others. Some Crimson Trace laser sights and lights are also sold in a package with a ready-to-use holster.

Terry Naughton, Former VP of BLACKHAWK! Acquires Scopecoat

Scopecoat LLC, makers of patented optics protection for optics has been acquired by Terry Naughton, a 15-year veteran of the shooting sports and tactical industries. The company was originally founded by Dan Evans in 1994.

After damaging a scope while removing it from his safe, Evans realized there had to be a better method to protect high value optics. Using a high quality neoprene laminated with nylon, he created a custom fit for the optic. Evans’ new creation or “scope coat” protected the scope from dings, scratches, debris and as a plus, the neoprene naturally wicked moisture and condensation from the optics. Over the years, the product line has increased to include Binobib and Barrel Boot lines.

Today, the American-made Scopecoat products are distributed worldwide within the shooting sports, law enforcement and military markets. With over 80 custom fit sizes, Scopecoat is the standard of protection for leading optics brands worldwide. Scopecoat custom shop also produces logo products for militaries, government agencies, hunting lodges and sporting goods associations.

Naughton, who assumed ownership in August 2015, has a proven track record of growing markets and increasing sales. Previous positions include Vice President of Sales for Alpha Industries, Director of International Sales for ATK and Vice President Marketing of BLACKHAWK! where he integrated a family of brands under the BLACKHAWK! banner, developed B2B and B2C marketing strategies, and as a member of the senior management team, lead the successful sale and acquisition of BLACKHAWK! by ATK.

“Having grown the Scopecoat product line from the garage to worldwide acceptance, I feel confident that Terry is the best ambassador to carry the brand forward into new directions and new markets,” Dan Evans commented.

Terry Naughton, new owner and President of Scopecoat responded, “I have been a fan of the brand and have used Scopecoat on all my optics for years. I am excited to continue the strong tradition of providing ‘The World’s Best Optics Protection’ to our Military, LE and the Shooting Sports Market.”

Over the next several months, Naughton will move the company from its current location in Phoenix, Arizona, to Virginia Beach, Virginia. All production will continue to be made in the U.S.A.

Scopecoat is expanding and dealer inquiries are welcome. Interested dealers can contact Scopecoat via email at – info@scopecoat.com, or by calling 1 (877) 726-7328.
