MARTIAL ARTS AND SELF DEFENSE

We’ve been swamped with a variety of projects this week so we’re a little late getting this week’s shoot-the-shit topic done. For those just joining us, each Friday we come up with a topic that may or may not be consistent with the Blog’s central theme. We encourage readers to participate and feel free to make unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether.

A large number of folks have expressed an interest in pursuing martial arts training as a vehicle for self-defense. We encourage those falling into that group to reconsider your decision. A successful defense strategy has but one objective and that is maintaining physical separation between you and the assailant and nothing surpasses the effectiveness of a firearm in achieving that goal. All of the martial arts require physical contact so they fail to maintain separation. Even pepper sprays fail to meet our separation objective unless you’re using police grade dispensers. Any assailant armed with a gun, knife, bat, etc., presents a lethal threat and it is highly unlikely that you would prevail; statistically the deck is stacked against you, regardless of how many You Tube videos you’ve watched.

Your key to surviving a self-defense scenario has always been, and will continue to be, situational awareness. Avoid putting yourself into a situation that you have to fight your way out of. However, life being what it is, if you find your-self  in an unavoidable confrontation, your defensive posture should consist of two concentric circles with you at the center. The outer circle has a 20 foot radius and the inner circle a 10 foot radius. A threat entering the 20 foot space is prioritized and anything entering the 10 foot space gets immediate attention.

Martial arts are great and there are tons of styles, schools and just plain garbage. Study the martial arts to develop discipline, agility and physical wellness. Study traditional arts like judo, aikido, kung fu and karate from professionally accredited schools. Aikido and Kung Fu are disciplines that you can practice until you’re 90. Approach the martial arts with an interest in their history, philosophy  and as interesting and effective wellness tools, but let your firearm handle the defensive work.

Have a great weekend. Have some fun, but be safe. Spend some quality time with your buds and family.

EAGLEVILLE, PA, April 18, 2016–Streamlight® Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting, has increased the lumen output of its high lumen Portable Scene Light to 5,300 lumens. The updated light also now features a red low battery warning indicator.

Featuring a narrow footprint and a telescoping extension pole, the Portable Scene Light can be used almost anywhere by first responders and other professionals for scene lighting purposes, from wide, open places to tight, confined work areas.

“We have upgraded the Portable Scene Light from 3,600 to 5,300 lumens, to give users an even more extraordinary high lumen flood light,” said Streamlight Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Michael F. Dineen.  “This completely portable flood light can be conveniently carried and rapidly deployed in less than 30 seconds. It’s ideal for lighting large scale scenes, such as fires and major accidents, as well as for examining small, narrow spaces such as in mining and industrial inspections. With its long run times, the light can be used throughout an entire work shift without having to recharge the battery.  And users now will be able to easily detect when the battery is running low with the light’s new low battery indicator light.”

The Portable Scene Light uses six C4® LEDs and wide-pattern parabolic reflectors to provide two selectable beam widths and three levels of light intensity, ranging from a super-bright flood beam to a low setting with ultra-long run times. The light features a rotating head that can be extended on a telescoping pole to an overall height of 72 inches, supported by stabilizing legs that can be quickly deployed and locked to provide balance on uneven surfaces. The light also features a 90 degree swivel neck, enabling users to aim the light beam precisely where it is needed for task lighting purposes.

On the high setting, the light delivers an incredibly bright 5,300 and a four-hour run time, over a beam distance of 410 meters. On medium, it provides 2,500 lumens, nine hours of run time and a beam distance of 292 meters. On low, the light runs for 18 hours and offers 1,300 lumens, and a beam distance of 215 meters. A selectable diffuser permits users to choose between the two beam widths, which are available with all three lighting modes.

The Portable Scene Light is powered by a zero-maintenance 12 volt, 14.4 Ah sealed lead acid battery that is rechargeable up to 500 times. The light can be charged to 90 percent of its capacity in 10 hours. Red and green LEDs provide charge status feedback. The light also will run indefinitely by plugging the included remote 10-foot power cord into a DC power source; an AC adapter is also included. A toggle switch allows users to switch between the battery and power source modes of operation.

Constructed from high-impact thermoplastic housing, the Portable Scene Light offers weatherproof construction. It features an IP67 design for dust-tight and waterproof operation to 1 one meter for 30 minutes.  The light also is engineered to resist 40 MPH winds continuous in all directions with its head fully extended.

The Portable Scene Light light measures 22 inches in length and 6.5 inches in width, and weighs 25 pounds. It packs to a compact size for easy storage.

Available in international safety yellow, the light comes with a heavy duty shoulder carrying strap, AC charger, 12V DC cord and Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.  The MSRP is $1,149.00.

NEGLIGENT ENTRUSTMENT ?

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. As you know, the Clinton Campaign is actively encouraging civil suits against the ammunition and firearm industry for misuse or unauthorized use of their products. The poster child, and I use that analogy with the greatest respect, is the Newtown killings by Adam Lanza on 14 December 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This national tragedy sparked an outcry for more stringent gun control and even before local police and the State Attorney’s office could conduct an investigation, an angry and misinformed public demanded the heads of the gun manufacturer, distributor and retailer who sold Adam Lanza the firearms. That justifiable anger played into the hands of those whose sole interest is in advancing the gun control argument by politicizing the tragic event.

It was not until 25 November 2013, when the Connecticut State Attorney released “Report of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Danbury on the Shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School and36 Yogananda Street,Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012 that it became clear that all of the firearms used in the killings by Adam Lanza were legally purchased by Mrs. Lanza, Adams mother, and not Mr. Lanza. The following is an excerpt from the report that you can read in its entirety here

The following weapons were recovered in the course of this investigation: (1) a Bushmaster Model XM15-E2S semi-automatic rifle, found in the same classroom as the shooter’s body. All of the 5.56 mm shell casings from the school that were tested were found to have been fired from this rifle. (2) a Glock 20, 10 mm semi-automatic pistol found near the shooter’s body and determined to have been the source of the self-inflicted gunshot wound by which he took his own life. (3) a Sig Sauer P226, 9 mm semi-automatic pistol found on the shooter’s person. There is no evidence this weapon had been fired. (4) a Izhmash Saiga-12, 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun found in the shooter’s car in the parking lot outside the school, and which was secured in the vehicle’s trunk by police responding to the scene. There is no evidence this weapon had been fired. (5) a Savage Mark II rifle found at 36 Yogananda Street on the floor of the master bedroom near the bed where the body of the shooter’s mother was found. This rifle also was found to have fired the four bullets recovered during the autopsy of the shooter’s mother.

All of the firearms were legally purchased by the shooter’s mother. Additionally, ammunition of the types found had been purchased by the mother in the past, and there is no evidence that the ammunition was purchased by anyone else, including the shooter.

Confronted by this reality, the movement’s attention turned towards the Remington Group, Camfour Inc., and Riverview Gun Sales, the named Defendants in a law suite that alleged “negligent entrustment” The Defendants asked the court for a dismissal under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which protects gun makers from civil lawsuits, such as those brought by victims of gun crimes. Yesterday, the motion was denied by Judge Barbara Bellis of the Connecticut Superior Court paving the way for the trial to continue. If the plaintiffs prevail all firearm and ammunition manufacturers are at risk from meritless law suites.

The facts in this case suggest to us that Mrs. Lanza’s failure to secure her personal firearms resulted in her demise and that of the Sandy Hook children; if negligent entrustment applies in principal and concept it should fall on Mrs. Lanza not the Defendants.

So, just how difficult is it to secure your firearm and render it unusable by your kids? Unfortunately there is a large segment of the population lacking an understanding that all firearms can easily be rendered safe, even if loaded. To promote that understanding, we put together a short unscripted video that’s over miked and under lit demonstrating the process. It’s not difficult you simply need to be a conscientious and responsible gun owner parent.

Have a safe weekend everyone. Get out with your buds and family; maybe a little range time is in order. We love hearing from you and remember that all shoot-the-shit rules apply!

Zapata Racing Flyboard Air

Zapata Racing started life competing in powered water craft events. The company’s founder Franky Zapata has been engaged in designing high performance hydro propelled devices. Zapata’s latest project, still in development, is  the Flyboard® Air. Unlike the hydro-propelled devices, like the Jetpack, that require a hose for water intake, the Flyboard® Air is fully autonomous.

The Flyboard Air is an independent propulsion unit with some impressive capabilities not withstanding its limited operating time of 10 minutes. The Flyboard Air has an operating ceiling of 10,000 feet and a top speed of 150 km / hr. or 93.2 mph.

I can think of a number of military or tactical applications for the Flyboard Air. How about getting to the top of a building or an emergency egress. Or, perhaps negotiating a terrain obstacle or board a vessel.

Zapata Racing is a French company. Organizations interested in taking a closer look at the prototype, contact Franky Zapata at http://zapata-racing.com/en/

Sneak Preview: GLOCK 17 GEN 4

DSC_0765_02

When Gaston Glock developed the Glock 17 for the Austrian Army, he wasn’t just replacing the aging Walther P38,  he created an industry. Fast forward 34 years and we see an industry centered around Glock pistols. I venture to say that Glocks have more accessorizing options than the 57 Chevy; not even the venerable 1911 can come close to the Glock in terms of “things you can do” to them.

When discussing the Glock 17, it’s unavoidable and more often assumed that this workhorse got its name from its 17 round magazine, a false assumption. The Glock 17 gets its name from the fact that it was the 17th patent held by the Glock company. Every other model pistol thereafter is name in numerical sequence;  e.g., Glock 18, Glock 19 Glock 20, etc. For reasons that completely escape me, not all models are available in the United States. The Glock 42 was the classic example available to Europeans for years before its introduction in the United States.

In my upcoming review, which I hope to have completed end of April, I won’t rehash the Glock magic; instead, I’ll give you my impressions on the Gen 4 enhancements. So, stay tuned for that.

Firearms Industry Economic Impact

http___www.nssf.org_impact_coverNEWTOWN, Conn. – The total economic impact of the firearms and ammunition industry in the United States increased from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $49.3 billion in 2015, a 158 percent increase, while the total number of full-time equivalent jobs rose from approximately 166,000 to almost 288,000, a 73 percent increase in that period, according to a report released today by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the industry’s trade association.

On a year-over-year basis, the industry’s economic impact rose from $43 billion in 2014 to $49.3 in 2015, a nearly 15 percent increase while total jobs increased from approximately 263,000 to almost 288,000, a 9 percent increase in the same period.

“Our industry is proud to be one of the truly bright spots in our economy as an unprecedented number of Americans have chosen to exercise their fundamental right to keep and bear arms and to safely enjoy the shooting sports,” said Stephen L. Sanetti, NSSF president and chief executive officer. “In response to that dynamic, we have increased our direct workforce by about 21,000 in the last two years alone, adding jobs that pay an average of more than $50,000 in wages and benefits. In addition, since 2008 we increased federal tax payments by 144 percent, Pittman-Robertson excise taxes that support wildlife conservation by 92 percent and state business taxes by 96 percent.”

BAD DAY FOR THIS TURKISH GENDARMERIE (GRAPHIC)

The following video appears to show a Browning M2 heavy machine gun blowing up as the result of some sort of malfunction. Turkish Gendarmerie can be seen here engaging YPS Kurds in Turkey. The Gendarmerie are a sort of military police who operate in the more rural areas of the country and they specialize in counter terror operations as well.

Wonder what the hell happened?

ARE BANANAS GOOD FOR YOU ?

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. This is the one time of the week when you the reader can make any unsupported comment, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether; all at no charge to you. Our topics don’t necessarily reflect the sight’s theme but they do add to the reader’s knowledge base wherever possible, which is the reason we are avoiding election discussions. Can you believe the 2016 election process! I suppose things could be worse!

Instead we’d like to dismiss the myth that bananas are fattening and not good for you. There’s been considerable research done on the nutritional value of bananas that contradicts the assertion and clearly supports that bananas are actually very good for you.

The banana’s secret weapon is its fiber, potassium and Vitamin C; a medium sized banana delivers 450 mg of potassium.

Here are some of the many benefits

  1. Blood Pressure – the potassium in bananas aids in vascular vasodilation ( dilation of blood vessels) reducing blood pressure.
  2. Cancer – cancers are generally cause through the expression of a genetic predisposition. That gene may never be expressed. But if it is expressed it commonly results from the interaction of human cell with a free radical. A free radical is an ion that initiates a mutation in the cell, but rather than killing the cell, it cause the cancer gene to express itself. Bananas, as well as citrus fruits and juices, contribute vitamin C which acts to prevent the formation of free radicals. The fiber in a banana also functions to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
  3. Heart Health – The fiber, potassium, vitamin C and B6 content in bananas all support heart health. The recommended intake of potassium for an adult is 4700 mg
  4. Preserving memory  – Bananas contain tryptophan, an amino acid that studies suggest plays a role in preserving memory and boosting your mood. So it’s a natural antidepressant.
The Banana Nutritional Profile

One serving of banana contains 110 calories, 30 grams of carbohydrate and 1 gram of protein. Bananas are naturally free of fat, cholesterol and sodium.2 The recommended intake of potassium for adults is 4700 milligrams per day.

Bananas provide a variety of vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin B6 – .5 mg
  • Manganese – .3 mg
  • Vitamin C – 9 mg
  • Potassium – 450 mg
  • Dietary Fiber – 3g
  • Protein – 1 g
  • Magnesium – 34 mg
  • Folate – 25.0 mcg
  • Riboflavin – .1 mg
  • Niacin – .8 mg
  • Vitamin A – 81 IU
  • Iron – .3 mg

So, there you have it – eat bananas!

Have a great weekend, rest up or do something exciting. In all cases spend some quality time with your buds and family and keep those sweat pumps in low speed, but stay engaged!

DO YOU KNOW WHO’S MAKING SUPPRESSORS IN 2016 ?

20160403_115200

It may interest you to know that the suppressor sector is booming, and we can all thank the pioneering work from companies like SWR, GEMTECH and Advanced Armament, all of whom personify the spirit of small business entrepreneurship. The good news for consumers is that the vibrant competition in today’s market is leading to improved technologies and lower prices. Yeah, there’s a lot of fluff out there but there’s also some exceptional  technology with correspondingly impressive performance. One example of that is Georgia based Dead Air Armament. Keeping up with what’s new is a full time job so I have to complement the folks at Small Arms Review for the work they’ve put into SAR VOL 20, No 3  which is not a comprehensive but focused treatise of  ATF definitions, NFA regs, suppressor technology and suppressor history. SAR // Vol 20 No3 is on the racks now and available for purchase. If you are just getting started or have an interest in sound suppressors you’ll want to pick up a copy, it’s well worth the $6.95 price tag.

HECKLER & KOCH WINS COMPACT SEMI-AUTOMATIC SNIPER SYSTEM.

635951232310119226-ARM-sniper-rifle.JPG

Last Friday, 1 April 2016, the Army announced its decision to award Heckler & Koch a contract to develop a compact semi-automatic sniper system. The decision would replace the current sniper platform M110 SASS, made by Knight’s Armament of Vero Beach Florida.

The Army has been shopping for a shorter, lighter, more ergonomic and more reliable system as stated in the Program Executives Soldier’s Portfolio.

We’ve read the FedBizOpps.gov notice which disclosed that H&K will produce a maximum of 3,643 rifles over 24 months, as well as spare parts and depot support, at a max contract value of $44.5 million. There’s a minimum purchase of 30 rifles for quality assurance testing.

The announcement did not mention a specific H&K COTS model but we won’t exclude that possibility and there’s no information given to concretely support an H&K (new) development effort. Maybe its an April Fool’s joke on Knight’s Armament.

I’ve shot the M110 SASS on numerous occasion and have never had a problem holding at least 1 MOA, nor have I experienced a catastrophic stoppage of any type. It seems to me that if the Army is looking for a lighter and shorter sniper system to replace the M110, something like the Knight’s Armament Compact SASS with a collapsible stock, 16 inch barrel, lighter and shorter overall length,  would be the logical and less costly approach.

None of the interested parties had comments at this time, so we’ll keep an eye out for additional details as they become available.

Our congratulations to Heckler & Koch on their contract award.
