WHERE CAN YOU FLY YOUR DRONE?

It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. This week we’re going to assist you in determining where you can fly your drone. We’ve gotten several question from individuals expressing some frustration and confusion.
All of the information that follows applies to an sUAV (small unmanned aerial vehicle). The FAA defines a small sUAV as an unmanned aircraft weighing more than .55lbs and less than 55 lbs. Aircraft falling in this weight category are subject to 14 CFR Part 107.
For starters, If you own an sUAV it must be registered with the FAA. It’s also important for you to keep in mind that registration alone is not approval to fly your UAV anywhere you please. That assumption could result in criminal prosecution. If you fly your drone for recreational purposes you are not required to obtain a Remote PIC certificate with an sUAS rating. You need to understand the very fine distinction between recreational and commercial activity. For example, if your neighbor asks you to do aerial photography or videography of his home saying, “Bob I’ll buy you and Emily dinner if you take those pictures for me…,” the FAA considers the activity as a commercial application and you must hold a current Remote PIC certificate. The following operational restrictions also apply.
All UAV operations, licensed or not, is limited to 400 feet AGL (above ground level), cannot exceed speeds of 87 knots or 100 m.p.h., the operator must maintain visual line of sight at all times (with the unaided eye other than normal eye glasses) and you can not fly over individuals or property not part of the operation being performed. Where can you fly?
Recreational pilots may not fly within 5 miles from an airport. The FAA published an App “B4UFLY” , available for IOS and Android, which when installed uses the GPS location of the smart device and tells you instantly if you can fly in your area. You can also refer to a sectional chart. A sectional is a chart with symbols and information used by pilots when operating under visual flight rules or VFR.

It’s not as complicated as it looks but essentially anything that is within a circle or shaded box is controlled or restricted airspace and you may not fly in that airspace as an unlicensed UAV recreational operator. Readers desiring to learn the intricacies of the VFR Sectional should download the FAA Aeronautical Chart User’s Guide
We hope this will clarify some of the questions but allow me to reiterate don not place yourself in jeopardy by disregarding all regulations. If you decide to sit for the Remote PIC exam, and have no flight experience, take a ground school. There are some excellent online programs.
Have a great weekend and be safe; especially our friends and readers in the South Eastern Coast!

MasterPiece Arms Introduces Four New Technology Developments
MPA rolls out the Trinity Rail System, Bag Rider with Flush Cup, Data Card Holder and BA Lite Night Vision Bridge System designed to improve a shooter’s performance in a Precision Rifle Series event.
Comer, Ga.- (October 2016) – MasterPiece Arms (MPA), manufacturers of the MPA BA Rifles, Chassis Systems, Defender Pistols and Carbines, Suppressors and MPAR Rifles, is pleased to introduce four new technology developments that will improve shooter performance in Precision Rifle Series (PRS) events. These new innovations are theMPA Trinity Rail System, the MPA Bag Rider with Flush Cup, the MPA Data Card Holderand the BA Lite Night Vision Bridge System.
![]()

The MPA Trinity Rail System is designed to be used on any MPA Chassis, including the MPA BA Chassis, MPA Comp Chassis and MPA BA Lite Chassis, providing an alternate location for positioning a bipod. This is an ideal accessory for rifles used in competitions similar to PRS events. This system allows shooters to adjust their bipod location so they can have a stable shooting position on short or limited surfaces, such as a 55-gallon drum, spools or rock outcroppings. The MPA Trinity Rail attaches to the two slots that run the full-length of the bottom of the fore-end ofthe chassis body. The system includes the Trinity Rail Base, Short Bipod Picatinny Rail, (4) SHCS and (4) M-lok nuts. The system weighs 1 pound and is designed for quick and easy installation and removal.

Bag Rider with Flush Cup![]()
To learn about installation, use and function, watch the MasterPiece Arms BA Chassis Trinity Rail video: https://youtu.be/WHk8DwvsFzk. MSRP $59.99.
![]()

The MPA Bag Rider with Flush Cup, weighing in at 1 pound, is based on an idea from Dave Preston, winner of the 2015 PRS. The purpose of the Bag Rider is to allow a consistent management of recoil when using a rear bag, while the Flush Cup, as conceived by Preston, is to be used when a sling is worn to provide support for the rifle during certain positional stances. Having the Flush Cup use the rear connection point on the bottom of the rifle allows the rifle to pull downward, as compared to side positioned flush cups which can trend the rifle laterally. The Bag Rider attaches to the user’s MPA BA Chassis, Comp Chassis or BA Lite Chassis through the threaded three-hole pattern in the bottom of the buttstock body. MSRP $29.99.
![]()

The third innovation from MPA is the MPA Data Card Holder. This new system is designed to be used on any MPA full size chassis to provide a quick and effective method of viewing the shooter’s DOPE for target distances while keeping his cheek welded to the cheek riser. The Data Card has a surface similar to a dry erase board and is compatible with grease pens, dry erase pens or a Crayola® Washable Marker. When it is time to replace the data, simply wipe off the markings with a cloth or paper towel. To ensure that data isn’t accidentally erased, the shooter also has the option of putting painter’s tape on the card to write the data on and simply removing the tape when the stage or shooting session is completed.
The Data Card can be oriented top to bottom or left to right, giving the shooter multiple options for card placement, as well as the ability to write the DOPE on the card while not attached to the rifle. MSRP $49.99.

The BA Lite Night Vision Bridge System is designed for use primarily with the BA Lite Chassis, but can also attach to MPA’s standard BA Chassis for special applications. More information on this item, along with availability, will be posted on www.masterpiecearms.com within six to eight weeks.

Revision Military Unveils Submission For SOCOM Next-Generation Helmet Program
Essex Junction, Vermont (October 3, 2016) – In July of this year, Revision Military, a world leader in head protection solutions, was awarded a development contract (H92222-16-R-0017) by the Department of Defense for their next-generation helmet platform program. Today, Revision has unveiled its submission for this contract-Revision’s Family of Tactical Headborne Systems (FTHS). In fulfillment of the development contract, Revision has delivered several-hundred samples for testing.
Revision’s unique multipurpose helmet suite consists of Coastal Marine, Riverine, Ground Ballistic, and Ground Bump systems. Revision has also developed a new set of accessories that will be provided with the FTHS suite kits. These specially-designed accessories enhance the multiuse helmet systems for Boat, Vehicle, and HALO/HAHO, as well as mountain, river, and direct action operations.
The bump helmet Revision developed for the FTHS is the first bump helmet in the industry that can be can be ballistically-enabled with add-on armor, for blunt force and ballistic protection during specialty operations. This novel operational approach also reduces the neck load burden during highly dynamic operations while still providing the protection required to accomplish the mission. This, coupled with the skeletonization of all system components, has significantly reduced the overall weight compared to helmets on the market today.
“We can’t wait for the warfighter to get their hands on these helmets,” said Eric Hounchell, Vice President, Armor and Global Operations, Revision Military. “This is a very exciting opportunity for Revision, and this project continues to drive innovation within our Armor Business Unit. It’s a very aggressive program and I believe Revision has proven itself more than up to the challenge, building a full-suite, custom solution from the ground up. THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE – ANALYSIS
It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit. Once more, we provide you with an opportunity to make unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether. Nowhere else will you find this level of reader commitment at no charge to you!
Thank God we are less than 39 days away from the 2016 Elections and soon all this will be history! Did you guys catch the first Presidential Debates? One thing is certain, Donald Trump is no orator – well, maybe in the Bronx he is; however, the good news comes from reading the U.S. Constitution to find that there is no Constitutional requirement for candidates to have proven oratory skills. Furthermore, you have to be around New Yorkers for a while to understand how to separate what they say from what they actually mean. Hillary Clinton on the other hand is quite the opposite. The key to Hillary Clinton is sound bite analysis. Hillary will say one thing directed at a specific group and another thing to another group. There’s nothing wrong with that except for the fact that quite often they are mutually exclusive. Meaning that if you do one thing you can’t do the other. Hillary Clinton has elevated prevarication to an art form.
All week, the media has been consumed by who won the debate; we say, who gives a rat’s ass. Borrowing from Hillary Clinton’s testimony to Congress on Benghazi “AT THIS POINT IN TIME WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE!” and who won the debate is worthless; it’s content that matters. We were also a little bothered by Lester “the molester” (no indication of his character we’re simply creating a rhyme so we don’t have to subject to iambic pentameter), the moderator who was not very balanced. But, hey it’s NBC so some of that is to be expected. So, for this week’s shoot-the-shit we’d like to share our view.
With regards to Lester Holt’s comments on jobs being added to the economy we say this, Lester here are the jobs propelling our economy…
Now to our analysis!
Donald J. Trump was unprepared period! Nothing else can be said.
Hillary Clinton demonstrated her characteristic disdain for the American voter by attacking Donald Trump on his failure to release tax returns suggesting he did not pay “his fair share” of taxes. She actually believes voters are stupid. Here is our take on that particular subject.
Tax laws are written by the Legislative Branch of Government, otherwise know as Congress, Hillary Clinton as Senator for the State of New York was party to drafting tax laws. If Donald Trump used those laws to reduce his tax liability, it doesn’t make him dishonest or an opportunist as Hillary Clinton would like you to think. There are numerous U.S. corporations that use the tax laws drafted by Congress to reduce their tax liability. Would you as an individual tax payer fail to take every legal and available tax deduction just so you can pay more in taxes? Obviously Not! Hillary Clinton’s allegations are ludicrous and intended to take advantage of uninformed voter sentiment.
Another bombastic claim by Hillary Clinton was her suggestion that traveling to 112 countries makes her the more experienced candidate. Folks, Hillary Clinton is the most traveled Secretary of State in US HISTORY! During her tenure as Secretary of State, she traveled over 976,000 miles to claim that record. Now, without getting into a great deal of detail, what the hell was happening in the world from 2010 to March of 2014 requiring her to travel close to 1,000,000 miles at taxpayer expense. It would be an interesting exercise to come up with the fully loaded cost (loaded costa includes Secret Service, hotels, meals, family members, staff time and so forth) of her travel to the U.S. Taxpayer. Other than a global boondoggle to market Hillary Clinton what did she accomplish? Not a heck of a lot!
On the issue of energy policy Hillary Clinton is clueless and she wouldn’t know a BTU from a neutron. Most individuals with some understanding of engineering do not consider the building of solar panels Star Wars technology.
On the economy, Hillary Clinton has been on the dole (living off the tax payer) for so long that she has no sense of money. Nineteen trillion dollars in national debt? What’s that? Hillary, where does money come from? Well darling money is something that’s just there.
Lastly, there was little discussion of the Clinton e-mail scandal. It’s clear that e-mail messages were destroyed and that highly classified data was exposed to compromise. Folks if she had 33,000+ personal e-mails on Yoga and wedding plans when the hell did she have time to do her job?
If suburban educated women and white voters aren’t asking these questions to drill down through the smoke and mirrors, then we, as a country, are in serious trouble.
As always, let us know what’s on your mind. Have a great weekend and be safe in whatever you do. We ask you to support our Republican members of Congress, especially those up for reelection. Vote! It has never been more important than in this election year!
Parabon Seeks Volunteers for DNA Kinship Study to Help Identify Fallen Soldiers from Past Conflicts
Extended families recruited to advance identification methods using DNA from distant relatives
Reston, Va. (29 September 2016) –Parabon NanoLabs (Parabon) announced today a call for participants in a research study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), in which DNA samples from distant relatives will be analyzed to develop innovative kinship and ancestry algorithms and associated laboratory methods to extend familial matching beyond current capabilities. Traditional DNA methods only allow remains to be identified if DNA from closely related family members is available. Many unidentified Service members, however, do not have living family members who are closely related. This study aims to increase the genetic distance over which kinship can be accurately inferred. The enhancements made possible by this research will assist in the identification of the toughest missing personnel cases by “matching” DNA from distant relatives to that of deceased Service members, including those from long past conflicts, such as World War II.
“This cause is personal to us at Parabon. Like many families in America, some of us at the company have loved ones who went missing in action. This study will help us make technological advances that will one day reunite fathers, sons, brothers and uncles with their families. We need volunteers from extended families to make this research possible,” said Paula Armentrout, vice president of Parabon NanoLabs.
Parabon seeks to enroll 50-100 extended families (5 to 10 volunteers per family) to participate in the study. Participating families do not need to have a direct relation to an M.I.A. soldier in order to qualify. Volunteers for the study will simply supply a sample of DNA from a mouth swab and answer questions about their family tree. In return for participation, each volunteer will receive a custom DNA ancestry report and a small stipend. There is no cost to participate. Those interested in participating in the study can sign up to be considered at:
https://snapshot.parabon-nanolabs.com/kinship-signup.
“Our ideal study participants are all related by blood and come from an extended family network that includes a wide variety of distant relatives, such as second cousins, great-uncles, and grandchildren,” said Ellen Greytak, PhD, Principal Investigator of the study. “We will study the similarity of their DNA and use the knowledge gained to improve our kinship inference methods.”
The Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Emerging Capability & Prototyping is funding this research to help support the Department’s Personnel Accounting mission.

DJI Introduces Mavic Pro: Foldable and Portable Drone

At a press event in New York City today, DJI introduced the all-new Mavic Pro (starting at $749). The foldable drone (that packs up to around the size of a water bottle) features a built-in 4k camera, 3-axis gimbal, and comes in a very portable custom designed shoulder bag. Indeed, portability is at the forefront of the Mavic Pro’s design, as it weighs only about a half as much as DJI’s previous drone, the Phantom 4, and is truly made to be easily taken anywhere.
During the unveiling event, DJI’s PR Manager Michael Perry introduced the Mavic Pro to the audience by pretending to reach for it inside of a backpack placed on the stage. Instead, however, he ended up pulling the neatly folded up drone from his back pocket – at which point members of the audience erupted in applause.
Perry explained that the Mavi Pro is “inspired by the portability of a smartphone, and we are taking that philosophy to the sky. We want to shorten the time between inspiration and creativity.” Perry added that essential to the Mavic Pro’s design was “simplicity” and “intuitive use.”
YouTube personality iJustine was also on-hand to demonstrate how she uses the new drone and explained that she loved that it fits in her handbag, and was so easy to use.
Thanks to DJI’s new OcuSync transmission technology inside the drone’s pocket-sized remote controller, aerial photographers are capable of up to a 4.3-mile transmission range, HD 720p long range, and Full HD 1080p short range video streaming. Closely integrated with DJI GO, OcuSync transfers the Mavic’s data in real time. The OcuSync can also be used to download photos and videos while flying at a maximum speed of up to 40 Mb/s.
The Mavic Pro can see up to 98ft and measure a distance up to 49ft, making it an advanced sonar based avoidance technology. Using a complex network that includes 5 cameras, GPS&GLONASS, a pair of ultrasonic range finders, redundant sensors, and a group of 24 powerful, specialized computers, the Mavic essentially creates a 3D map of the space around it and what to avoid.
According to DJI: “The Mavic Pro camera records true 4K video — four times the size of 1080p — at 30 frames per second and Full HD 1080p at 120 frames per second, so you can create incredible slow motion. Its minimum focusing distance is just 19in (0.5m), making it perfect for everything from the ultimate drone to once in a lifetime landscapes.”
“The Mavic is the only drone of its size to carry an integrated high-precision 3-axis mechanical camera stabilization system, giving you crystal clear photos and smooth videos, without losing a single pixel.” – DJI
With almost about the same flight time as it’s predecessor, the Phantom 4, the Mavic Pro has a flight time of 21 minutes at regular use, and under controlled settings up to a maximum time of 27 minutes.
Flying the portable Mavic Pro while staying on your subject is as easy as ever with ActiveTrack technology. Thanks to ActiveTrack, users can select to Trace, Profile or Spotlight their subject. You can also choose to fly the drone using just your smartphone with the Virtual Joystick, making flying and control the Mavic Pro as easy as a few simple taps on your smartphone screen.
When used with the DJI Goggle the flying experience with the Mavic Pro becomes truly immersive with an impressive display of 85°angle of view for a true bird’s eye view.
For such small package, the Mavic Pro comes with enough advanced features to make this a go-anywhere, shoot virtually anything pro drone.
DJI’s MavicPro is now available for preorder from your favorite retailer.

SYRIAN REFUGEE VETTING
![]()
It’s Friday and time for our weekly shoot-the-shit topic. The Syrian refugee process is an important issue to voters and both political parties. Unfortunately you can’t count on the mainstream media to provide you with the details, so we will. None of the information that follows is “official” it’s based on our meetings with representatives of INTERPOL, DHS and FBI. Our hope is that the information presented here will help you make informed decisions. During our fact gathering references were made to the successes of the Canadian system, which we will touch on below. As with all shoot-the-shit topics, readers are free to make any unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether. So let’s get started.
The Syrian refugee process follows a FIFO rule. FIFO stands for “First In Frist Out” so who ever has been in a camp the longest amount of time will be allowed to apply for resettlement first. The Canadian government does not accept military age males and they won’t accept fractions of a family (if I understood the explanation properly) . It was clear from talking with both INTERPOL and the FBI that there is no international standard for processing refugees wishing to relocate. In addition to the lack of a standard, identity proofing is questionable. Our INTERPOL representative did mention that most of the refugees, presently in camps, have documents; however, authenticating these documents is an area of concern and much of present day vetting is behavioral. Behavioral vetting involves an analysis of the applicant’s behavior while in the camps along with interviews with any individual or individuals who may have known the applicant while in Syria.
One of several potential infiltration mechanisms is claiming family affiliation. It works in the following way…
I’m going to tell the camp officials that I am your brother. If you betray me, we will kill your family in Aleppo.
This claim can be validated only through DNA testing and as of this writing it appears that no one is collecting and processing DNA. In fact, the only biometric modalities being collected are finger prints and facial. There is some discussion of deploying rapid DNA technology, which is capable of processing DNA in 90 minutes as opposed to days but that has yet to be done, possibly due to cost. There were two other infiltration techniques discussed with us but out of an abundance of caution we will not disclose that information here.
The comments you’re hearing from pro-refugee pundits that refugees undergo 2 years of vetting is a half-truth. The refugees, on average, spend 2 years in a camp during which time they could be observed. Furthermore, other than a visual inspection of official identity documents, there is no reliable identity proofing. It is therefore possible for infiltrators, holding identity documents that pass inspection, to then provide biometric data and enter a country legally with a new identity. It’s unlikely these individuals will jump on a HUMVEE with an AK47 and attack a domestic target. However, the more likely scenario is that the individual or individuals become operational and using the host country’s privacy and civil liberties protections conduct radicalization operations, conduct training and/or provided command and control for kinetic action against the host country.
It was interesting to note that all of the individuals we spoke to said the overwhelming majority of these refugees want to return to Syria.
We look forward to your comments. Have a great weekend and be safe in whatever you’re doing!

Federal Judge Orders Parties In A Class Action To Remind Owners Of Certain Remington Firearms That A Settlement Has Been Reached
REMINDER TO REMINGTON RIFLE OWNERS
A Settlement Has Been Proposed in an Economic Loss Lawsuit that Alleges Safety Defects
You may be eligible to have your firearm retrofitted or receive other benefits
Recently, a federal judge ordered the parties in an economic-loss class action to remind owners of certain Remington firearms that a settlement has been reached. The settlement involves two classes. The first class includes owners of firearms that utilize a trigger connector. The second class includes owners of firearms that utilize the X-Mark Pro trigger mechanism that is the subject of a voluntary safety recall. The settlement allows owners of Remington models 700, Seven, and related models to have their trigger replaced free of charge, among other benefits.
The settlement was entered following allegations that Remington firearms can fire without a trigger pull. Remington denies those allegations with respect to the trigger connector but is offering trigger replacements to ensure continued satisfaction for its valuable customers. With respect to X-Mark Pro trigger mechanisms, Remington has implemented a voluntary safety recall. If you own a firearm that is subject to the safety recall, stop using your firearm immediately. Safety has always been a priority for Remington.
Even if you do nothing you will be bound by the Court’s decisions. If you want to keep your right to sue the Defendants yourself, you must exclude yourself from the Settlement Class by November 18, 2016. If you stay in the Settlement Class, you may object to the Settlement by November 18, 2016.
Call 1-800-876-5940 now to learn the models involved, make your claim or find out more. Or visit www.remingtonfirearmsclassactionsettlement.com.
MIL SISTEMIKA Integrates Thermoteknix’s TiCAM 1000 LRF Target Locator With Its PERSONAL EYE SYSTEM (PES)
The TiCAM 1000 LRF Target Locator from Thermoteknix is a versatile target acquisition and observation sensor for day and night-time use. The device has a direct-view optical channel for daytime use, a MicroCAM high resolution uncooled thermal imager, laser range finder, digital magnetic compass & GPS. Lightweight and compact, TiCAM 1000 is suitable for forward observation squads, infantry, border security and special units with varying levels of training.![]()
The TiCAM 1000 operates from AA or Li-Ion batteries or external power. The day-time direct-view channel needs no power, and other functions consume power only when used. It can be connected to different combat and command systems, using either a cable or via wireless connection. In addition to its role as a transmitter of location information and coordinates, TiCAM 1000 can be used as a receiving terminal from external DMC/GPS.
Personal Eye System from MIL Sistemika is a personal tracking, navigation and data sharing application aimed at soldiers, police, security forces, emergency services and others who need topographic navigation, tracking, blue force tracking, and common operational picture sharing. PES was designed by active soldiers as a substitute for a traditional GPS receiver, paper map and a mobile phone. In house development by MIL Sistemika has enabled Personal Eye compatibility with TiCAM 1000.
It works on an Android platform and uses GPS and other device sensors for acquiring its location position which is then displayed on a raster map. It does not offer turn by turn navigation per se, such as Garmin or other navigation devices that rely on a road network data. PES can use online public maps (Yahoo, Google, Open Street Maps etc.), Online WMS maps (usually provided by internal GIS departments), offline maps stored on the device in TMS (tiled format), or offline cached maps stored while browsing online maps. The ability to use offline or cached offline maps is invaluable in areas with no 3G coverage or when cost of data transfer is a limiting factor.
Infantry, policemen, snipers and rescue workers, can now use TiCAM 1000 with PES or Sniper Calculator, to transfer measurements (targets) and target images directly to the map on PES, or use measurements for ballistic calculations. Potential uses are: Target data sharing among troops, JTACs (Joint Terminal Attack Controllers), use of target images for target recognition, or damage assessment. Use of target grids for sniper, mortar or artillery control is also possible. (separate gonio head recommended).
PES is now fully compatible with Android devices (v 2.3 – v 6.0.1) via Bluetooth. Connection with Windows or Linux based computers, and connection with BES (Battle Eye System) is under development, as is USB.
