NSSF Salutes South Dakota’s Gov. Larry Rhoden for Signing Suppressor Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, the Firearm Industry Trade Association, salutes South Dakota’s Gov. Larry Rhoden for promptly following through on his promise to sign into law Senate Bill 2, which deregulated suppressors, or silencers, in the state after the legislation was unanimously approved by the legislature just two weeks ago. Gov. Rhoden signed the law at Sioux Falls-based Silencer Central, with NSSF Board of Governors member and Silencer Central Founder and CEO Brandon Maddox, along with NSSF’s Moriah Day, Director of Government Relations – State Affairs, in attendance.
“This is what proactive and commonsense leadership looks like. South Dakota is taking the steps to ensure that its citizens can lawfully obtain, possess and use a hearing protection device should we ever get to a point that they are removed from the National Firearms Act (NFA),” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF’s Senior Vice President & General Counsel. “Suppressors are hearing safety devices that make recreational shooting and hunting a safer and more enjoyable activity. We will continue to press to have these devices removed from the NFA so that they are more accessible to the public.”
“South Dakota is the most Second Amendment-friendly state in America, and this is yet another opportunity for us to pave the way and set an example for the rest of the nation,” said Gov. Rhoden in a press release. “By removing unnecessary state-level restrictions, we are standing up for freedom and protecting the constitutional right of law-abiding citizens.”
Senate Bill 2 removed suppressors from the state’s definition of a “controlled weapon” and eliminated the statutory requirement that possession of these devices requires a federal tax stamp. That tax requirement, which was reduced to a $0 fee under the One Big Beautiful Bill, must still be obtained as required by the NFA. The new law fixes that requirement to ensure citizens can continue to obtain and possess suppressors should Congress pass the NSSF-supported Hearing Protection Act to remove the duplicitous background check, registration and tax stamp requirement for these safety devices.
Gov. Rhoden attended NSSF’s 5th Annual Governors’ Forum at SHOT Show 2026® and spoke of Maddox’s Silencer Central as an example of the growing firearm and ammunition industry in his state. In particular, he pointed to Senate Bill 2 as a demonstration of the state’s legislature and his administration’s commitment to supporting Second Amendment rights and the industry that makes those rights possible.
Gov. Rhoden explained the importance of both to NSSF in a recent profile.
“South Dakota is the most Second Amendment-friendly state in the nation,” he explained. “We will keep it that way by cutting red tape and making sure companies know that we are Open for Opportunity.”

The Maztech Industries X4-FCS™ (Fire Control System) represents a significant leap in small arms technology, transitioning the traditional rifle scope from a static glass tube into a fully integrated digital sensor suite. Developed in collaboration with Magpul, this system is built around a cantilever mount machined from billet 7075-T6 aluminum, finished with Type III hard-coat anodizing to meet MIL-STD-810 environmental standards. The unit is designed to house a standard 30mm Low-Power Variable Optic (LPVO) while adding a complex layer of computational power. It is powered by two rechargeable 18650 batteries, though it maintains a failsafe architecture that allows the user to utilize the optic’s physical etched reticle even if the electronics are powered down or compromised.
The core functionality of the X4-FCS lies in its internal “weather station” and the integration of the Applied Ballistics® solver. The device contains an array of onboard sensors that constantly monitor barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity, as well as real-time motion data including pitch, roll, and heading. By fusing this atmospheric and positional data, the system calculates the exact ballistic solution for the specific ammunition profile selected by the shooter. This information is then projected as a high-brightness, daylight-readable green digital overlay within the shooter’s field of view. This “smart” reticle automatically adjusts for rifle cant and ballistic drop, providing a precise point of aim without requiring the shooter to manually “dial” turrets or calculate holdovers.
Connectivity is a hallmark of the X4-FCS architecture, utilizing a combination of Bluetooth Low Energy, Near-Field Communication, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio for secure, low-probability-of-intercept communication. This allows the mount to act as a central hub for a modular ecosystem. When paired with the X4-LRF (Laser Rangefinder), the system can instantly update the digital reticle based on the distance to the target. Furthermore, when integrated with Magpul’s smart magazine technology, the HUD displays a real-time round count, significantly enhancing the shooter’s situational awareness. This ecosystem is managed via a dedicated mobile app that can store up to thirty distinct ballistic profiles, which are synced to the mount via NFC or Bluetooth.
Operational utility is maintained through a 1.93-inch optic height, which provides a more “heads-up” shooting posture compatible with modern gear and night vision integration. The digital reticle offers an expansive adjustment range, capable of providing visual holds for up to 115 MOA of drop, well beyond the typical capabilities of standard LPVO reticles. Because the system is designed for professional and military use, it adheres to strict ITAR regulations. The X4-FCS essentially functions as a miniaturized version of the fire control systems found in main battle tanks, compressed into a lightweight, rail-mounted package that brings unprecedented precision to the individual marksman.

The software interface of the X4-FCS is managed through the Maztech Companion App, which serves as the primary gateway for configuring the system’s digital brain. Within the app, users can build highly specific profiles by inputting critical variables such as bullet weight, muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient (G1 or G7), and sight height. Once a profile is created, it is transferred to the mount via a secure Near-Field Communication (NFC) tap or a Bluetooth link. On the device itself, the user interface is navigated using a physical control dial or an optional rail-mounted remote. This allows the shooter to toggle between active profiles or manually override environmental inputs if they prefer to use data from an external wind meter.
Calibrating the Applied Ballistics® solver is a multi-step process designed to ensure the digital reticle tracks perfectly with the physical world. After the initial mechanical zero of the LPVO is established at 100 yards, the user enters “Digital Zero” mode to align the electronic aiming dot precisely over the physical crosshairs. To further refine the solution for long-range precision, the system utilizes a feature called “Trueing.” This involves firing at a known distance—typically the transonic boundary of the caliber—and then adjusting the muzzle velocity or “Drop Scale Factor” within the software until the digital point of impact matches the actual impact on the target. This calibration accounts for the unique barrel harmonics and velocity deviations of the individual rifle.
Once calibrated, the solver operates in real-time, constantly refreshing the firing solution as the internal sensors detect changes in the rifle’s orientation or the surrounding environment. If a laser rangefinder is connected, the process becomes nearly instantaneous: the shooter ranges the target, and the computer calculates the solution based on the current Cos(θ) of the shot angle and atmospheric density. The digital reticle then “drops” to the exact holdover point, effectively removing the need for the shooter to perform mental math or reference a “dope” card under stress.

Special Forces Trust Collaborates with DoW/USU Brain Tissue Repository to Advance Suicide Prevention Research
Southern Pines, NC — The Special Forces Trust (SFT) announced today a groundbreaking collaboration with the DoW/Uniformed Services University (USU) Brain Tissue Repository (BTR) as part of SFT’s Beyond the Battlefield:
Suicide Prevention and Invisible Wounds program. This collaboration aims to uncover biological answers that may one day reduce suicide in the Special Forces community and save lives.
SFT is recognized by U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), 1st Special Forces Command (1st SFC), and the Warrior Care Coalition as the first call in the established protocol when suicide occurs within the Green Beret community. With this unique role comes responsibility to lead the search for solutions.
“Every time we lose a warrior to suicide, the impact reverberates through the entire Regiment,” said Jodi Burns, CEO of the Special Forces Trust. “This alliance with the DoW/USU Brain Tissue Repository will help us move beyond grief to answers—answers written in the very tissue of the brain—that may reveal how to prevent the next loss.”
The DoW/USU Brain Tissue Repository is the only brain bank in the world dedicated exclusively to military service members. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and study brain specimens from those with and without traumatic brain injury, blast exposure, or post-traumatic stress. This research is already shedding light on microscopic changes—such as neuroinflammation, scarring, and axonal injury—that can influence memory, mood, and behavior.
Together, SFT and the BTR will:
– Expand awareness of voluntary brain donation within the Special Forces community.
– Advance research into the biological underpinnings of suicide and invisible wounds.
– Translate findings into tools that may identify risk earlier and guide treatment during life.
“Every donated brain is a gift that helps us understand the invisible wounds of war and accelerates discoveries that can ultimately save lives,” said Dr. Daniel Perl, Director of the DoW/USU Brain Tissue Repository.
Through Beyond the Battlefield, and now with our collaboration with the DoW/USU Brain Tissue Repository, SFT is leading the charge against the invisible wounds of war.

Modern infantry operate in environments saturated with threats and information. Ballistic danger, laser exposure, electronic noise, and the constant need to process data from multiple systems all converge at the individual soldier level. Traditional combat helmets focus primarily on protection, but they are increasingly disconnected from the digital tools soldiers rely on to understand and navigate the battlefield.
A new headborne system is intended to bridge that gap by turning the helmet into an integrated combat node rather than a passive piece of equipment. The Integrated Multi-Threat Headborne System (IMHS) combines ballistic protection with built-in electronics, power distribution, and communications, giving soldiers both physical safety and improved situational awareness in a single platform.
According to NextGenDefense, at its core, the system is designed around modularity. Instead of locking users into a fixed configuration, the helmet allows components to be added, removed, or upgraded depending on mission needs. Ballistic protection is paired with embedded power and data connections, enabling direct integration of sensors, displays, and future electronic systems without external cabling or ad-hoc mounts.
One of the most significant changes is how information reaches the soldier. Helmet-mounted power and data support visual aids that work across lighting conditions, from low-light environments to bright daylight. The architecture is also designed to support augmented reality overlays and navigation cues, linking the helmet directly with battle management and soldier power systems. This allows information from radios, sensors, or command networks to be delivered without forcing soldiers to look away from their surroundings.
Communications and hearing protection are also integrated into the system. Lightweight tactical audio components protect hearing while maintaining clear situational awareness and team communication. Protective eyewear built into the concept provides defense against ballistic fragments and laser threats, reducing the need for separate, sometimes incompatible, protective gear.
The helmet reflects a broader shift toward treating the individual soldier as a connected platform. Modern combat increasingly depends on rapid information flow, coordination across domains, and the ability to operate effectively in complex environments. A helmet that distributes power, data, and protection in one system reduces cognitive and physical burden while improving responsiveness at the tactical edge.
The prototype is being developed under a joint government–industry effort and is scheduled for evaluation by the U.S. Army’s Soldier Center in late fiscal 2026. Feedback from those trials will shape further refinement. If successful, the approach could redefine how personal protection and battlefield awareness are combined, moving beyond standalone armor toward fully integrated soldier systems designed for data-driven warfare.

—Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing
The Xero L60i difference
The Xero L60i is the first and only laser rangefinder with onboard map-based GPS navigational capabilities and a high resolution, multi-color display overlaid into superior optics. This enables features such as:
Superior optics
Purpose-built to give users the highest quality optical experience, Xero L60i features fully multicoated, low-dispersion glass, which provides razor-sharp optics with a flat field of view, accurate color fidelity and superior light transmission. The 32mm objective lens was intentionally chosen to provide a generous exit pupil, low-light performance, and superior field of view. During dawn or dusk use, an ambient light sensor automatically controls display brightness, ensuring the visual scene remains clear.
Precise long-distance ranging
Range animals to 2,775 meters and trees to 3,600. In optimal low-light conditions, the Xero L60i makes it possible to reach as far as 7,000 meters to retro reflective objects while achieving accuracy of +/- .25 meters under 1,000 meters and +/- 1 meter out to maximum laser-ranged distances.
Onboard ballistics
Get access to the onboard Applied Ballistics Ultralight™ solvervia the AB Quantum app for all the data needed to make the perfect shot. Thanks to the GPS positioning, temperature, compass, and barometric sensors, the Xero L60i delivers an accurate ballistic solution for short- and long-range shooting, including the effect of Coriolis on the point of impact. Change profiles, setup target cards, and more, all with a few button taps. Archers will appreciate the all-new arrow ballistics solver, which provides details on angle compensated range, max arrow height, and the arrow entry angle at the target.
The Xero L60i is built to withstand the harsh outdoor conditions with an IPX7 water-resistance rating and runs on two AAA lithium batteries. It’s available now for $2,499.99.
