CORRECTION TO MY BURRIS 1-8 x 24 XTR-II REVIEW OF 17 NOVEMBER 2016

Mid November 2016, I published a review of the Burris 1-8 x 24 XTR-II. In that review, I commented on the turret cap retention mechanism. My comments were factually incorrect. You can read the original review here. My original comments were:

“…One area where a minor modification to the turret system design makes sense is the turret cap retaining screw of the wind turret. Burris used a slotted aluminum retaining screw to secure the turret cap. I’d like to see a transition to a steel or hex fastener. The current retaining screw has a very shallow slot which when combined with its soft aluminum construction can be easily damaged while swapping out turret caps.”

While at Shot Show 2017, I spent some time discussing the issue with Mike from Burris Optics who very patiently and generously enlightened me.

After removing the cap covering the Burris XTR II 1-8×24 windage knob, here is what you see.

image

To zero the scope, you proceed to adjust the wind value. Once your weapon is zeroed, you loosen two set screws, which frees the cap to rotate around the turret so it can be set to “0”. Burris allows you to completely remove the turret cap so you can transition from a covered windage cap to a larger exposed wind adjustment cap.

To remove the cap you need to back out the two set screws far enough so they clear an internal slot machined into the turret assembly. The flat head slot that you see in the picture has nothing to do with cap retention. It is part of the turret assembly and not to be touched.

IWI US now offers firearms training and Krav Maga courses at the Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet, Texas and Armorer’s courses at the Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania.

Our new, centrally located, Texas facility allows us to provide this training and offer classes year round.”

The TAVOR Operator courses are offered in three levels, from the most basic, which brings a new TAVOR owner from little-to-no familiarity with the fundamentals of bullpup shooting to proficiency, to the most advanced, the active level III course that incorporates the knowledge from the two previous courses and adds training in areas like moving from cover to cover, operating in low light as well as firing from unusual shooting positions.

Krav Maga courses are also available at the Texas facility. Krav Maga is the IDF’s hand-to-hand combat technique and offers an alternative method of self-defense when other means of force are not available to the student. IWI US also offers a Krav Maga course specifically designed for women which will be available in the spring of 2017.

IWI TAVOR X95 Coming to Canada

IWI TAVOR X95 Black

The highly anticipated bullpup rifle will be available to shooting enthusiasts across Canada from Q1/17

Ramat HaSharon, Israel, January 10, 2017. Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) a leader in the production of combat-proven small arms for law enforcement agencies, governments, and armies around the world – will market its TAVOR X95 Bullpup Rifle in Canada starting from the first quarter of 2017.

According to Shlomi Sabag, IWI’s CEO, “After years of activity in the Canadian market and the successful sale of the TAVOR rifle and the JERICHO pistol, the company is proud to launch its cutting-edge TAVOR X95 rifle in this market. Deployed by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and many other armies throughout the world, the TAVOR X95 is one of the most advanced bullpup rifles available, combining long barrel with compact dimensions, to provide high accuracy with enhanced maneuverability.”

Based on the US model, the Canadian TAVOR X95 will be adapted to Canadian laws, with an 18.6 inch barrel. The rifle will be manufactured and assembled in Israel on the same production line used for the US market, and will therefore carry the “IWI US” markings. It will be exported directly from Israel to Canada, and, like the TAVOR, will be classified in Canada as non-restricted.

Recently selected as the 2017 “Shooting Illustrated” Rifle of the Year, the TAVOR X95 will be offered in two calibers – 5.56mm and 9mm – with a 9mm conversion kit also available for purchase. The TAVOR X95 platform incorporates a tri-rail forearm covered by three removable vented rail covers. The TAVOR-style grip is modular and can be easily converted to a more conventional AR type. The charging handle has also been relocated closer to the shooter’s center mass, and unlike the TAVOR, the ambidextrous magazine release is located in a similar AR-15 location on the TAVOR X95. Available in Black, FDE, and OD Green, the TAVOR X95 features a lightweight trigger pull, weighing around 3 kilos. The rifle can be purchased with compatible sights from Meprolight – either the MEPRO M21 Day/Night Self-Illuminated Reflex Sight or the MEPRO RDS or RDS PRO (M5) Electronic Weapon Red Dot Sight.

The TAVOR X95 rifle is an innovative firearm that was created and developed in close collaboration with elite units of the IDF. As the standard IDF assault rifle, it is exceptionally reliable in even the harshest weather conditions, and complies with the most stringent NATO standards for small arms.

Sabag continued, “The marketing of the rifle in Canada will begin during the first quarter of 2017. For information on the arrival date in your region, please contact IWI’s Canadian Distributor, North Sylva Co., or your local dealer or gun shop.”

Kalashnikov USA Files Countersuit Against Finish First Tactical, LLC

8b490c67-72dd-4119-a682-b2c1436f65f9

Filed in Broward County, Florida at the end of 2016 in response to a lawsuit Finish First Tactical filed against Kalashnikov USA and Premax Manufacturing, Kalashnikov USA seeks compensation for breach of contract and non-disclosure agreement by Finish First Tactical.

Pompano Beach, Fla. (January 2017) – Kalashnikov USA answered the lawsuit filed by Finish First Tactical, LLC with a countersuit. Finish First Tactical made public its lawsuit against firearms manufacturer, Kalashnikov USA and a subcontractor, Premax Manufacturing in October 2016 alleging that Kalashnikov USA and Premax breached a mutual non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Finish First Tactical and began a relationship, which in essence, cut out Finish First Tactical.

The million dollar countersuit by Kalashnikov USA filed December 30, 2016 demonstrates that Kalashnikov USA hired Finish Tactical to manufacture parts for the new American-made Kalashnikov rifles and shotguns. The new claims made by Kalashnikov USA in Broward County Court holds that Finish First Tactical breached the agreement in a number of ways including complete failure to perform, violation of a non-disclosure agreement and fraud.

The initial NDA signed by Finish First Tactical and Kalashnikov USA established a number of restrictions, including non-disclosure of confidential information such as design specifications. Finish First Tactical agreed to supply the specified parts at agreed upon prices and schedules. Without authorization from Kalashnikov USA, and with full knowledge they could not supply the parts, Finish First Tactical engaged a third party manufacturer, Premax Manufacturing to produce the parts. Even after, in good faith, Kalashnikov USA advanced Finish First Tactical substantial funds to encourage them to complete their contract, Finish First Tactical retained the advances and failed to supply product or return of the funds.

The ongoing actions by Finish First Tactical, including misrepresentation, sharing of confidential information and engaging in unfair acts and practices have resulted in Kalashnikov USA seeking damages against Finish First Tactical exceeding $1 million and dismissal of their initial suit.

A Night Vision Revolution is Here: ColorTAC Opens the Eyes of Existing NVGs to a World of Color

a57268b8-f59a-4197-af15-60132b4216d7

“Maintaining our tactical advantage at night will require revolutionary, game changing capabilities like color night vision. The goal of our color night vision effort is to provide the SOF operator the ability to see true color on a moonless night with just starlight-a tremendous tactical advantage”- Admiral William H. McRaven, former ninth commander of the United States Special Operations Command.

German WWII night vision device on top of tank

Night vision systems have been around since the 1930s where they were first used by German tank operators in WWII. Since that time night vision has improved by leaps and bounds and has become an integral part of our military, giving the U.S. a great tactical advantage over its foes. It’s allowed our troops to exploit the cover of darkness to move to contact and engage our foes, as well as to save many civilians lives. Night vision gear has found its way from the battlefield to our streets, where SWAT teams and other police units employ NVGs to operate more effectively at night for tasks such as dangerous suspect apprehension, covert surveillance of illegal activity, crime response and search and rescue.

Security professionals use night vision to keep a vigilant eye on our Nation’s critical infrastructure such as power plants, refineries, manufacturing facilities and even nuclear power plants. With the affordable price of later generation NVGs, civilians have purchased thousands of these devices for safer cross-country navigation, wildlife observation and varmint hunting.

For all of night vision’s advantages and the many improvements made since its introduction in WWII it has had one glaring disadvantage. The “green glow,” monochromatic image denies the NVG viewer critical visual information: color. This missing information can be a liability or even potentially deadly. Without the vital information that seeing color can provide, law enforcement personnel may not be able to properly access the scene and make correct tactical decisions; military medics have difficulty telling blood from water, oil or other fluids, and thus may make mistakes in triage priorities; troops can have difficulty navigating terrain; and seeing color can reduce the fatigue and visual distortion green monochromatic night vision can cause. As Admiral McRaven stated in his Feb. 27, 2014, speech at the Hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, being able to see color at night will help maintain our troops’ tactical advantage going forward.

Thankfully, this important deficiency of current monochromatic night vision has been addressed. The future is here and Chromatra is bringing it. Chromatra, LLC, established in 2014, is ready to introduce to the world its first product; ColorTAC. ColorTAC, when used in conjunction with any of the over 1-million night vision devices already on the market today, provides the user with, simply, a color image at night. For those who rely on NVG’s to perform their mission, the ability to See What’s Missing can be the difference between life and death.

The ColorTAC CVA-14 easily clips on to any existing PVS-14 product pictured may not represent final production version.

ColorTAC is founded on the Chromatra’s unique Gemini technology that enables the production of color images from otherwise monochromatic imaging devices, yielding impressive low light imaging performance. The ColorTAC unit operates in extreme environments, is easily deployable, lightweight, exceeds market battery life requirements and is affordable. The unit folds up quickly and compactly for storage or transportation and takes just seconds to attach to any existing PVS-14-green or white phosphor- the most common NVG device used by the military and major law enforcement agencies .

Chromatra, LLC based in Beverly, Massachusetts, an East Coast hub of technological innovation and manufacturing, will be rolling out ColorTAC for the law enforcement market at the 2017 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Jan. 17 – 20.

IWI US’ X95 Wins 2017 Golden Bullseye Award for Rifle of the Year from Shooting Illustrated

The TAVOR X95 with its innovative design and function takes home the coveted prize.

Harrisburg, Pa. (December 2016)IWI US, Inc., a subsidiary of Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Ltd., is proud to announce that Shooting Illustrated Magazine has chosen the TAVOR X95 for the 2017 Golden Bullseye Award for Rifle of the Year. Shooting Illustrated is the National Rifle Association’s newest official journal with a focus on concealed carry, self-defense and tactical shooting.

“I determined the X95 is The Answer. The Answer to what question(s), you ask? The questions that have plagued security services the world over: How can we combine the range and power of a rifle round in a platform small enough to easily maneuver in and out of vehicles, maintain a low profile in urban areas, fit both males and females for multiple missions, be reliable and remain within sensible budgets? In the X95, all of those requirements are met with aplomb,” remarked Ed Friedman, editor-in-chief of Shooting Illustrated, in his written review of the X95

The annual Golden Bullseye Awards will be presented at the invitation-only breakfast during the 2017 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Atlanta, Georgia. To be considered for a Golden Bullseye Award the TAVOR X95 was tested and reviewed by the publication’s staff and found to represent the finest quality in a shooting sports product that exceeded not only the reviewer’s expectations but also its customers.

“The entire IWI team is extremely pleased to accept this coveted award,” Michael Kassnar, VP of sales and marketing for IWI US stated. “This award reflects the commitment IWI US has to place the highest quality product into the customer’s hands and to back that product with exemplary customer service.”

OUR TAKE ON THE RUSSIAN HACKS

Image result for cyber attacks

Nothing that I say below precludes the possibility of Russian hacks; my purpose for writing this is to provide you with details to suggest we need to take our foot of the hacking gas pedal to let our brains catch up with emotion. So, with that out of the way, let’s talk hacking.

Assessing hack origins is a complex problem. Unlike art, where we can see the artist’s brush strokes, use of color and light to identify the artist and determine authenticity, hacks are a much more complex matter. Hackers operate in networks and they share pieces of successfully implemented computer code with other networks. Successful hacks are rarely conducted against IT infrastructure, for example a network’s router or firewall. That’s too difficult and time consuming. It’s much easier to send out phishing e-mails to trusting individuals. Hackers may send out thousands of e-mails to get 2% bites. These e-mails are increasingly sophisticated and they are part of the sharing program.

For example, you get an e-mail from a bank asking you to validate your online access. It may be a bank that you use, or not. If it happens to be a bank that you do business with, you may be lured into using the link provided in the e-mail. Once you use the link, you’ll be asked to provide name, address, login i/d and password, etc. The hacker now has information they can use to defraud you or worse yet, sells it. They may sell that information to a crime network or a government. Other hacks begin with a similar e-mail but the link takes you to a site that implants malware, keyboard loggers and in some cases will deposit computer code that allows the hacker to create a virtual private network to your computer, which they can call up as needed to transfer files in and out of  your computer or device.

Other tricks include downloading free software from a variety of internet sites. Bleach Bit, for example, is downloaded  free of charge. The problem is that it hijacks your web browser, directing your web searches to sites that will implant malware on your machines or servers. So, I’ll guarantee you that SOMEONE has a complete record of the Clinton server contents just waiting to be sold.

Eighty percent of hacks can be eliminated by increasing end-user awareness and agency / enterprise IT discipline. The following steps need to be taken at all levels of government and the enterprise.

  1. Train your computer users to identify e-mail phishing attempts. You need to use examples that are as official looking as you can find. Some phishing attempts are crude and poorly written others look like official sources. Train your people!
  2. Set policy that prevents employees from using company or government IT resources for personal use. No personal web browsing or personal e-mails on company PCs, smart devices or laptops.
  3. No local or remote access to enterprise or government resources with personal smart devices, PCs or laptops.

If your agency or company is hacked, chances are that it was self inflicted and points to ineffective IT security.  IT managers and senior managers need to implement policies that contain all  three elements I’ve identified.

Here is an example of a phishing e-mail (I’ve removed all hyperlinks so it’s inert)

Both grips are available in black or flat dark earth and feature upper grip extensions. Check these and our AR magazines out at booth 451 lower level SHOT.

The HTG also comes with the innovative GapperTM which fills the space between the trigger guard and grip for increased comfort.

The HTG allows for a fuller and firmer grip squeeze – or purchase and is an excellent choice for most shooters. Its grip well is also hollow so backup items such as batteries, ear plugs, and a number of after-market accessories can be inserted inside for long term backup.

Installing the ATG on an AR-15/10 platform is a five-minute task that can be done without machining or special fitting. After installation, the grip angle can be easily adjusted from the standard to 17, 25 or 33 degrees takes in just a few seconds: loosen the grip well screw, move the grip to the desired position, then re tighten the screw and it will stay locked in position.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE FLYING YOUR CHRISTMAS DRONE…

clip_image002

I’ve been chatting with a number of my UAV sources and was informed that UAV sales have been through the roof this Holiday Season. The majority of buyers fall under the category of recreational users. I think that’s a wonderful thing. It’s a terrific way to get outdoors, have some fun and teach your kids the principals of aviation and aerodynamics at a non-engineering level. However, things are not as simple as that, so if you’re thinking of opening your present and flying your UAV in your front lawn, think again!

If your UAV weighs .55 lbs. or more it needs to be registered with the FAA. They will send you an airframe number that must be affixed to the UAV so that it is visible. You may not fly your UAV until that has been done.

Once you’ve registered, be sure to download the FAA’s B4UFLY app. The app is available for Android and IOS. This app will let you know if you are allowed to fly in your area. Assuming that you’re allowed to fly, under no circumstances are you allowed to fly over someone’s property or over individuals not part of your flight operations.

Regrettably, there are imbeciles weaponizing UAVs. If you see that or suspect those activities report it. These people are either too stupid to fly or criminals. Their actions endanger lives and make it difficult for you and your family to enjoy a great hobby and learning experience. The commercial use of UAVs is accelerating at an exponential rate and it’s likely that your children will see business travel on remotely piloted aircraft in their lifetime. We need to encourage the technology and ensure a safe operating environment.

Have fun, but keep in mind that penalties are not trivial, and in most cases you’ll be charged with a felony that carries a 10 yr. sentence and $10,000 fine per violation.

SIG SAUER – MCX Mandatory Carriage Assembly Replacement Program

jpeg

SIG SAUER is conducting a mandatory replacement of the carriage assembly in SIG MCX rifles. SIG has found through extensive factory testing that in extremely rare instances, not reported in the field and extremely difficult to replicate, a condition may exist causing an unintended discharge. Failure to follow the loading procedures and basic rules of safe firearms handling outlined in the user’s manual has the potential to cause serious bodily harm or death. Although this has only been witnessed in 300 blackout, SIG has decided to upgrade all MCX models since the MCX is a modular platform and we want to ensure the quality and reliability of all products we manufacture.

Stop use of firearm immediately, and visit the SIG SAUER website listed below as soon as possible to register your firearm, initiate the process and view a video explaining how to change out your carriage assembly. SIG will send you a prepaid box to return your complete carriage assembly to the factory. The D3 SLK Sling features all the features of the D3 sling without the QD mounts and tri-glide. This allows for customization and users with multiple different mounting systems.

What started as a custom design built for his Force Recon platoon during a deployment became a lifelong mission for Travis Haley to build a rifle sling that works around the end user, and not the other way around.

The sling also debuts a low profile pad, inspired by climbing harnesses created by the world’s leading mountaineering companies. A 5-layer laminated construction sealed with stretch woven materials, the pad provides stability and comfort without adding weight or bulk.

The D3 Rifle Sling is the result of over 15 years of continuous use, revision, and improvement, delivering a versatile platform intuitive to the point where the rifle becomes a natural extension of the body.
