Robots may excel at repetitive tasks, but they still struggle with objects that appear trivial to the human eye—such as clear glass, glossy metal, or deep black materials. These surfaces tend to absorb or distort light in ways that confuse traditional 3D sensors, slowing down automation in factories where time and accuracy are critical.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) have developed a new solution that tackles this issue head-on. Their innovation, known as goROBOT3D, dramatically accelerates the scanning and evaluation of hard-to-read materials—from 15 seconds to less than 1.5, according to Interesting Engineering.
The system works by applying structured thermal imaging. Instead of using visible or infrared light, which struggles with transparent or reflective surfaces, goROBOT3D projects heat patterns onto the object and captures them with thermal cameras. This method generates a highly accurate 3D image.
The breakthrough lies in how the heat is applied and captured. The new setup uses a single, instantaneous projection made up of an irregular dot pattern created by diffractive optical elements. These elements split a laser beam into a complex thermal layout that strikes the object in a single shot. Two thermal cameras then capture this projection simultaneously.
Using spatial cross-correlation between the image pair, the system reconstructs the object’s 3D shape in just milliseconds. Previously, hundreds of image pairs were needed to achieve similar accuracy, making the process too slow for real-time manufacturing.
After capturing the object’s shape, artificial intelligence is used to identify optimal gripping points. The process allows robotic arms to pick out individual items from cluttered environments with speed and precision.
Fraunhofer IOF plans to showcase this new capability at automatica 2025 in Munich, offering a glimpse into the next generation of robotic vision systems.

NSSF Hails Rep. Darrell Issa’s ‘FIREARM’ Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, hails the introduction of H.R 3770, the Fighting Irrational Regulatory Enforcement to Avert Retailers’ Misfortune (FIREARM) Act, by U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif). The “FIREARM” Act would prevent the Bureau of Alcohol. Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from shuttering Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) over minor clerical mistakes and allows them to correct self-reported errors.
Companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate earlier this week as S. 1922, under the same title, by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa).
“Congressman Issa’s ‘FIREARM’ Act will ensure that future administrations cannot weaponize the ATF as a political gun control tool for special interests,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President & General Counsel. “Under the Biden administration, the firearm and ammunition industry witnessed the ATF being weaponized to carry out that administration’s extreme antigun policies. That damaged the cooperative relationships between firearm retailers, who are on the frontline preventing illegal straw purchases of firearms, and the ATF, which enforces laws to safeguard our communities. NSSF is thankful for Congressman Issa’s leadership to provide remedies that repair this necessary public trust in our federal agencies.”
Specifically, the “FIREARM” Act:
· Creates a safe harbor for FFLs to self-report violations, so they can correct any accidental errors;
· Requires the ATF to work collaboratively with FFLs to fix violations and help avoid future violations;
· Addresses the “willfulness” issue by defining it to mean a voluntary, intentional violation of a known legal duty achieved through specific intent or deliberate planning, excludes previous conduct, and creates a rebuttal if the conduct is not willful; and
· Allows for direct judicial review of license revocations to avoid the ATF from serving as both the judge and prosecutor.
President Joe Biden instituted the ATF’s “Zero Tolerance” policy that put firearm businesses at risk of losing their licenses and livelihoods for minor clerical errors that were previously corrected by ATF inspectors to assist those businesses to stay compliant and within the laws and regulations governing the firearm industry. The ATF revoked 157 licenses of FFLs in 2023, and an additional 80 licenses were voluntarily surrendered rather than endure the costly and painstaking process of clearing a business’s name, a pace for both of which increased during the Biden administration.
The Trump administration, through the Department of Justice (DOJ), announced in February that the Biden-era “Zero Tolerance” police was dead. The DOJ followed that up with an announcement that several policies were under review and “Zero Tolerance” was eliminated. Acting ATF Director Daniel Driscoll follow that up before Memorial Day with a new policy that will “promote fairness, consistency, and public safety.”

Plan ahead and join us for NDIA’s 2025 Undersea Warfare Fall Conference, scheduled for September 15 – 17, 2025, in Groton, CT. This in-person conference serves as the leading forum for networking and learning the latest news in the undersea warfare community. Connect with the brightest minds and gain insight into the latest requirements and developments in undersea warfare, including those related to countering submarine and mine threats as well as power projection from the sea.
The National Defense Industrial Association’s (NDIA) Undersea Warfare Division invites authors of high-quality professional abstracts to submit their work for technical presentation at the 2025 Undersea Warfare Fall Conference. This year’s Fall Conference will now be conducted at FVEY classified level with AUKUS government and industry participation, as both speakers and attendees, in the plenary and technical sessions. We will be able to accommodate briefs that are not releasable to AUKUS.
Material presented by U.S. industry, in the presence of foreign nationals, is considered an export and is subject to International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Speakers will be required to submit an ITAR exemption request to the Navy International Programs Office (NIPO). Once NIPO approves the ITAR exemption requests, speakers will need to self-certify (2 – 4 weeks prior to event). Additionally, all U.S. presentations that will be presented to REL UK, REL AUS must be reviewed and approved by the Foreign Disclosure Officer (FDO) prior to the conference. The deadline for all briefing material to be submitted to NDIA is August 25 at 8:00 am EDT to allow time for FDO review.
Briefs submitted by UK or AUS government or industry speakers must follow their national requirements.

Each abstract must be UNCLASSIFIED and cleared for public release with unlimited distribution (Distribution A). Each abstract should fit into one of the following Technical Sessions:

- Undersea Vehicles
For each U.S. industry speaker, the following information should be included at the top of your abstract to facilitate inclusion in ITAR exemption request:

- Company DDTC Registration Expiration
Individuals are required to submit a concise abstract of 4,000 characters or fewer by June 20 at 11:59 pm EDT. Authors will be notified whether their abstract has been accepted by July 11, 2025. ASA Vice President Owen Miller and General Counsel Meet with ATF Leadership
Earlier this week, ASA Vice President Owen Miller and General Counsel Michael Williams, joined by representatives from member companies, sat down with ATF Acting Director Driscoll, Deputy Director Cekada, Chief Counsel Leider, Chief of Staff Chan, and the newly appointed ATF Industry Liaison at ATF Headquarters. We brought the concerns of the suppressor community to the forefront with ATF’s top leadership.
While there is much work to be done by ATF to rebuild the trust of the industry and gun owners across the nation after years of the agency being used as a political weapon, we are encouraged by the tone and direction of ATF leadership.
We have an important seat at the table, fighting to ensure the voice of suppressor nation is heard.
Also, late last week ATF published the long-awaited 2024 Firearms Commerce in the United States report. This offered an important update for industry, including NFA statistical data that was last published in 2021.

NSSF Celebrates Unanimous SCOTUS Decision in Smith & Wesson v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, celebrates the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous 9-0 decision that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PCLAA) bars Mexico’s claims that firearm manufacturers “aided and abetted” illegal firearms trafficking to narco-terrorist drug cartels in Mexico.
“This is a tremendous victory for the firearm industry and the rule of law. For too long, gun control activists have attempted to twist basic tort law to malign the highly-regulated U.S. firearm industry with the criminal actions of violent organized crime, both here in the United States and abroad,” said NSSF’s Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “The firearm industry is sympathetic to plight of those in Mexico who are victims of rampant and uncontrolled violence at the hands of narco-terrorist drug cartels. The firearm industry works closely with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to prevent the illegal straw purchasing of firearms and the illegal transnational smuggling of firearms. This unequivocal decision by the Supreme Court that PLCAA applies and there is no evidence whatsoever that U.S. manufacturers are in any way responsible is verification of commitment to responsible firearm ownership.”
The Court wrote in the unanimous decision, “Recall that Congress enacted the statute to halt a flurry of lawsuits attempting to make gun manufacturers pay for the downstream harms resulting from misuse of their products. In a ‘findings’ and ‘purposes’ section, Congress explained that PLCAA was meant to stop those suits—to prevent manufacturers (and sellers) from being held ‘liable for the harm caused by those who criminally or unlawfully misuse firearm[s].’ Mexico’s suit closely resembles the ones Congress had in mind: It seeks to recover from American firearms manufacturers for the downstream damage Mexican cartel members wreak with their guns.”
NSSF filed an amicus brief supporting Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc., et al., in its petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to dismiss Mexico’s claim for $10 billion in damages against several U.S. firearm manufacturers.
Mexico filed their claim in a U.S. District Court in Boston in 2021, which was dismissed by that district court based on the bipartisan PLCAA that prohibits frivolous lawsuits against the firearm industry for the criminal misuse by remote third parties.
Mexico appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, which revived the lawsuit holding that Mexico’s “aiding and abetting” theory fit within one of the PLCAA’s narrow exceptions. Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc., et al., successfully petitioned the Supreme Court last year. The case was argued before the Supreme Court in March of this year.

Pinpointing and eliminating enemy targets will take place faster than ever before, as the Government invests more than £1 billion to equip the UK Armed Forces with a pioneering battlefield system.
A new Cyber and Electromagnetic Command will also be established to put the UK at the forefront of cyber operations as part of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR). The announcements were made by Defence Secretary, John Healey MP on a visit to MOD Corsham, the UK military’s cyber HQ.
The Ministry of Defence will develop a new Digital Targeting Web to better connect Armed Forces weapons systems and allow battlefield decisions for targeting enemy threats to be made and executed faster.
This pioneering digital capability will give the UK a decisive advantage through greater integration across domains, new AI and software, and better communication between our Armed Forces. As an example, a threat could be identified by a sensor on a ship or in space before being disabled by an F-35 aircraft, drone, or offensive cyber operation.
This follows the Prime Minister’s historic commitment to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP, recognising the critical importance of military readiness in an era of heightened global uncertainty.
Delivering this new Digital Targeting Web is central to UK efforts to learn lessons directly from the front line in Ukraine. When the Ukrainians achieved a step-change in lethality early in the war – by being able to find the enemy, target them and attack quickly and at scale – it allowed them to stop the encircling Russian advance.
The Ministry of Defence will establish a Cyber and Electromagnetic Command. It will sit under General Sir James Hockenhull’s Command and follows the MOD having to protect UK military networks against more than 90,000 ‘sub-threshold’ attacks in the last two years. The Command will lead defensive cyber operations and coordinate offensive cyber capabilities with the National Cyber Force.
The new Command will also harness all the Armed Forces’ expertise in electromagnetic warfare, helping them to seize and hold the initiative in a high-tempo race for military advantage – for example, through degrading command and control, jamming signals to drones or missiles and intercepting an adversary’s communications.
The announcements come as part of the publication of the SDR, expected imminently, which highlights how daily cyber-attacks are threatening the foundations of the economy and daily life.
The SDR sets a path for the next decade to transform defence and make the UK secure at home and strong abroad. It ends the hollowing out of our Armed Forces and will also drive innovation, jobs and growth across the country, allowing the UK to lead a stronger NATO. Enhanced cyber defences will help bolster national security and support economic stability – foundations of the Government’s Plan for Change.

Ways of warfare are rapidly changing – with the UK facing daily cyber-attacks on this new frontline.
The hard-fought lessons from Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine leave us under no illusions that future conflicts will be won through forces that are better connected, better equipped and innovating faster than their adversaries.
We will give our Armed Forces the ability to act at speeds never seen before – connecting ships, aircraft, tanks and operators so they can share vital information instantly and strike further and faster.
By attracting the best digital talent, and establishing a nerve centre for our cyber capability, we will harness the latest innovations, properly fund Britain’s defences for the modern age and support the government’s Plan for Change.
The SDR recommends that the MOD should deliver the Digital Targeting Web by 2027.
In February, the MOD also announced that Armed Forces recruits will be fast-tracked into specialist roles to tackle the growing cyber threat to the UK via a recruitment scheme.
The Cyber Direct Entry programme offers an accelerated path into military cyber roles with:
- Tailored training focused on essential cyberspace operational skills.
- Placement in operational cyber roles by the end of 2025.
- Starting salaries over £40,000, with potential for up to £25,000 in additional skills pay.
- No requirement to serve in dangerous environments or handle weapons.
- Full military benefits including medical care, sports facilities, adventure training, and professional development.
