A new optical wireless system developed in the UK is aiming to reshape secure communications by eliminating a key vulnerability in conventional wireless networks: radio frequency emissions. The system, named Kitefin XE, transmits data using invisible light, offering a highly secure and interference-resistant alternative to WiFi.
Deployed by Edinburgh-based pureLiFi, the Kitefin XE supports high-speed data transmission over an area of approximately 80 square meters. It operates entirely through light-based communication, meaning it does not emit radio frequencies—a feature that makes it undetectable to standard signal monitoring and highly resistant to jamming.
This approach offers clear advantages for sensitive environments, including government, defense, and critical infrastructure sites, where communications security is paramount and RF congestion or interception is a concern.
The system is certified under the IEEE 802.11bb standard, an emerging global benchmark for Light Fidelity (LiFi) technology, according to the company. This means that outside of addressing major cybersecurity risks associated with RF-based wireless networks, is also outpaces standard WiFi speeds.
Kitefin XE can also be integrated with Ethernet or fiber infrastructure, giving it flexibility in deployment scenarios where hybrid connectivity is required. Its design is particularly suited for locations where cabling is unfeasible or conventional wireless is compromised—such as secure facilities, field operations, and areas with strict electromagnetic emission restrictions.
The device builds on earlier tactical-grade LiFi solutions previously tested with the U.S. military. The development is supported by In-Q-Tel (IQT), a U.S. nonprofit that funds advanced technology with national security applications.
As cybersecurity threats grow increasingly complex, light-based communications like Kitefin XE represent a novel way to reduce exposure to external attacks while maintaining fast, reliable connectivity. For sectors where discretion and resilience are non-negotiable, optical wireless systems may soon play a central role in secure digital infrastructure.

Remembering Frank R. Brownell III (1939 – 2025)
GRINNELL, Iowa (June 18, 2025) – Brownells sadly announces the death of long-time family patriarch Frank Brownell, who successively held the positions of President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board at Brownells.
Frank passed away in Grinnell, Iowa on June 18, 2025, after a lengthy illness. He was six days shy of his 86th birthday.
For nearly six decades, Frank’s passion, vision, and generosity shaped not only Brownells, but the entire firearms community. Friends and customers alike remember him greeting “long lines of friends” at SHOT Show and the NRA Annual Meetings, championing gunsmithing, and driving industry innovation.
“Frank was the kind of person who made you better just by being around him.” Pete Brownell, CEO of Brownells and Frank’s son.
A Life of Service and Contribution
Born June 24, 1939, in Montezuma, Iowa, the second child and only son of Brownells founder Bob and his wife Lois, Frank grew up in Iowa and became involved in both the family business and the American gun industry at an early age. Frank graduated magna-cum-laude with a degree in Advertising from the University of Iowa in 1961 before serving aboard the USS Caliente (AO-53) as a U.S. Navy reservist.
In 1965, he joined Brownells full-time, laying out Big Book Catalog #18, and soon helped publish the first Gunsmith Kinks book in 1969 under the name F. Brownell and Son.
Frank became President in 1983, CEO in 2007, and Chairman of the Board in 2012, guiding Brownells for more than 40 years.
From marketing the now-iconic Latigo Sling at the 1964 NRA convention to elevating gunsmithing as a respected profession, his influence can be seen in countless shops, ranges, and workbenches across America.
A Legacy of Character
Beyond titles and accolades, Frank was cherished for his kindness, integrity, and infectious enthusiasm. Frank Brownell was a Navy veteran, a business leader, and a stalwart supporter of our unique American rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment.
An industry innovator, he helped establish Brownells as a nationwide legacy retailer in the gunsmithing, gun parts, and firearms space. He helped advance the best model for working with and developing endemic industry media. He advocated for elevating gunsmithing to a respected profession and created new ways to support and develop the growth of gunsmithing, gun ownership, and gun culture.
A Life Remembered
Frank is survived by his three sons, Bob, Pete, and Matt Brownell, and their families. Service details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
Friends, colleagues, and customers are encouraged to honor Frank by sharing memories, supporting aspiring gunsmiths, or simply spending time at the bench, just as he loved to do.

The WalkAbout 3.0’s open top allows a very fast draw, while the reinforced mouth allows a smooth and easy return of the gun to the holster. The WalkAbout 3.0’s belt clips are adjustable for cant, making it suitable for the strongside, crossdraw, or appendix carry positions.
The WalkAbout 3.0’s attached magazine carrier has a more pronounced angle than previous versions. This angle allows pistols with most carry-style red-dot optics to clear the spare magazine’s floorplate when drawing and has the secondary benefit of allowing a faster draw of the magazine when reloading, especially from the appendix carry position.
The ambidextrous WalkAbout 3.0 is supplied with two types of interchangeable tuckable clips. The first is the UniClip™, designed to go over the belt, but which also works well without a belt. NSSF Confirms ATF Demand 2 Program is Ending
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, has confirmed with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) that the Demand 2 Program is ending. That program, begun in February of 2000 during the antigun Clinton administration, required federal firearms licensees (FFLs) that have 25 or more firearms traced back to them subsequent to the recovery at a crime scene and the time from retail sale to trace is three years or less (what ATF calls “time-to-crime”). NSSF has been critical of the misuse of this protected firearm trace data to attempt to “name-and-shame” firearm retailers for crimes in which they had no involvement.
NSSF anticipates ATF will make a formal announcement of the policy’s end soon.
“This is a welcome step forward for firearm retailers who are targeted by gun control politicians and advocates despite the fact that they have done everything according to the letter of the law and regulations,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “The ATF is taking real and practical measures to restore trust with the public that is a fair arbiter when it comes to regulating the firearm industry. NSSF is proud that firearm retailers are the frontline of defense to prevent firearms from being possessed by those who should never have them. This action by the ATF underscores the value ATF places in that cooperative relationship.”
Previous “name-and-shame” leaks of the Demand Letter 2 list, which is created using protected firearm trace data, included the Washington, D.C. Metro Police Department. For a short time, D.C. Metro Police became the sole FFL in Washington, D.C., facilitating firearm transfers until private businesses obtained a license to do so. During that short time, D.C. Metro Police was required to report Demand 2 information to the ATF. That’s not because anyone at the D.C. Metro Police Department did anything wrong. It’s because criminals later misused firearms that were legally transferred.
NSSF was vocally critical of the former ATF Director Steve Dettelbach’s abuse of the Demand 2 Program when he shared protected firearm trace data with USA Today and the gun control group Brady United, in violation of the Tiahrt Amendment. That amendment restricts public access to sensitive, law enforcement-only firearm tracing data. This restriction is supported by Congress, ATF and law enforcement groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) because it secures sensitive tracing information which would jeopardize ongoing criminal investigations and put the lives of law enforcement officers, cooperating retailers and witnesses at risk.
The ATF explained in their 1998 Crime Gun Trace Analysis Reports, “The appearance of [a licensed dealer] or a first unlicensed purchaser of record in association with a crime gun or in association with multiple crime guns in no way suggests that either the federal firearms licensed dealer (FFL) or the first purchaser has committed criminal acts. Rather, such information may provide a starting point for further and more detailed investigation.”
NSSF supports U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins’ (R-La.) introduction of H.R. 1698, the Law Enforcement Protection and Privacy Act, which would enhance safeguards for protected firearm trace data. This legislation is vital to ensuring firearm trace data, which is protected by federal law, remains safeguarded from misuse that threatens investigations and lives. The bill puts “teeth to the Tiahrt rider,” by providing accountability for individuals who purposefully and unlawfully release this sensitive law enforcement information that is reserved for use in law enforcement investigations.
