Why You Should Hang On To Your Turntable

Image result for Goldman turntables

I made it through another week, and consider myself fortunate to have survived the flu that’s going around. Nasty stuff!

But I got through it, and now its time for our shoot the shit. I was going to talk about the gun control extravaganza but the argument is so ludicrous that it’s become disgusting. Our politicians have known since 9/11 that our country is vulnerable to terrorist attack; yet in spite of that knowledge, they have completely ignored our schools, the most vulnerable soft targets we have. What Cruz did in Parkland was no different than the night club shootings in Orlando, no different than the San Bernardino shootings, the Boston Marathon attacks and the Paris shootings for that matter. But, in typical political fashion, in an almost mindless discussion,  lets blame the gun. It’s remarkable that these people have a fully loaded compensation package of about $243,000 per year. The only person talking about hardening schools is Donald J Trump, Texas Gov. Abbot and Florida Governor Rick Scott. Disgusting!  But, this is not our topic so I’ll get off the soapbox before I get wound up.

Image result for analogue sound waveMusic is a wonderful thing, it enriches and communicates great emotion. When you listen to a violin you hear the resonance of the strings with the wood, you hear the violinist bowing as well as the resonance of the bow’s strings. A Stradivarius violin has a unique and identifiable resonance that’s communicated to the listener acoustically in the form of primary frequencies along with harmonics. The sound from musical instruments along with the sounds of your voice and what you hear are analog and not a binary stream of 1’s and 0’s

When a vinyl record is made, the analog track of an instrument is imprinted on the vinyl as it is captured by the microphone. It is the pure analog sound with all of its harmonics as it was generated by the instrument. Every nuance is captured with complete accuracy.

With the arrival of the digital age, we employed a technology called pulse coding modulation or PCM. PCM converts the analog signal from that violin to a digital stream of 64,000 bits per second.

Image result for pulse code modulation waveform

What happens in PCM is that we electronically sample the analog sound wave 64,000 times per second to generate a digital stream. Because the sampling is not continuous, when we covert the digital stream to an analog sound, that we can hear, we can only approximate what the original analog sound was.

Increasing the sampling rate and improving the DACs (Digital to Analog Converters) gets us a more faithful analog reproduction; however, it is still a best effort approximation of the original analog sound. The reason that CDs sound better than vinyl is because the digital stream has a higher signal to noise ratio. It’s equivalent to speaking using a normal tone of voice in a quiet environment. Things sound cleaner . What you loose in a digital environment are those nuances and resonances produced by an acoustic instrument like a violin, cello and guitar.

Vinyl had a couple of bad things going for it. First, an LP takes up more space in a store shelf than a CD.  Second, people were completely uninformed on how to properly care for and LP. Records were being played with worn needles and heavy arms along with other physical abuse.

CDs have now vanished having been replaced by the MP3 and as music lovers, we’ve moved from a faithful rendition of an instrument to a sterile approximation.

Keep your turntable and buy vinyl, not for its collectable value but because short of a live performance,  it’s the only way you’ll get to experience a Steinway or Stradivarius.

Have a great weekend. Be safe and spend some quality time with your buds and family.

MasterPiece Arms’ Scope Mount Surveyed #1 Used by Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Competitors

The totals were compiled from a survey of the top PRS competitors at the 2017 PRS Finale.

Comer, Ga. (February 2018)MasterPiece Arms (MPA), manufacturers of the MPA BA Rifles and Chassis Systems, was recently surveyed to be the number one scope mount used by Precision Rifle Series (PRS) competitors in the PRS 2017 Finale Gear Survey. MPA was also surveyed as the number one chassis/stock, number three muzzle brake, number five data board and number eight barrel.

The totals were compiled from a survey of the top PRS competitors at the 2017 PRS Finale that was held in Dec. 2017 in Camargo, Oklahoma. Of the 136 competitors at the Finale, approximately 110 completed the survey. The results were then compiled by PRS to show the most popular equipment used by the top-level shooters at the most competitive event of the PRS 2017 competitive season.

“We are honored and humbled to have been named the most used scope mount by the top PRS competitors. We pride ourselves on our innovative products, listening to the shooters in the field about their pain points and designing products with their feedback in mind to help them perform better when the pressure is on,” said MPA’s President, Phil Cashin.

The MPA BA Bolt Action Mount is made for mounting high performance optics onto bolt action rifles with Picatinny rail scope bases. This mounting system provides the shooter with the ability to confidently move the optic/mount to multiple rifles with simple windage and elevation adjustments. It is precision machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and finished in hard coat T3 Mil-Spec anodize. The interface ensures positive engagement for both in spec and out of spec rail systems and provides absolute return to zero via multiple locking lugs located on the bottom of the rail interface. MPA’s NATO spec rail interface system pulls the mount onto the top of the Picatinny rail, providing over 200 percent more rail contact than other competitive mounting systems that pinch the rail.

David Preston started competing in PRS in 2014 and quickly moved up the ranks, taking home 1st place in the 2015 season, as well as in the 2015 Finale with a perfect 400 score. He uses the MPA BA Competition Chassis, the MPA BA Bolt Action Mount and MPA Mag Extensions during competition for the past two years.

David Preston

“MPA products have been a great fit for me because they are all based on ideas and input from shooters, all while maintaining the comfort and ease of use. I choose MPA because they set the bar high and listen to what people want. It’s a company that leads and doesn’t follow. Ever since I started using MPA products in competitions, I have found myself in the top five 15 of the last 17 matches, including five wins,” commented Preston.

The PRS has steadily grown in both reach and influence over the past decade. In 2017, the series hosted around three dozen two-day bolt action gun and gas gun matches all over the United States. In 2018, PRS is scheduled to host an unprecedented 43 bolt action gun matches and six to eight gas gun matches, along with dozens of regional one-day Club Series matches, making 2018 PRS’ biggest year yet.

MANTIS TECH MANTIS X SHOOTING PERFORMANCE SYSTEM

DSC_2586

I’m not sure if there’s a Shot Show product of the year, but if there is Mantis Tech’s Mantis X Shooting Performance System deserves that accolade. The Mantis Tech geeks, as they describe themselves, are some very sophisticated developers who also share a passion for the shooting sports.

Mantis X is a sophisticated and ruthlessly accurate system that analyzes weapon movement identifying shooting deficiencies and making corrective recommendations. Are you using too little trigger finger? Mantis X will tell you. Are you canting your weapon? Mantis X will tell you. It’s an amazing training resource worth every penny of its modest $149 M.S.R.P.

Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Competitors Name MasterPiece Arms’ Chassis/Stock as #1 Most Used System in Competitions

The totals were compiled from a survey of the top PRS competitors at the 2017 PRS Finale.

Comer, Ga. (February 2018)MasterPiece Arms (MPA), manufacturers of the MPA BA Rifles and Chassis Systems, was recently surveyed to be the number one chassis/stock system used by Precision Rifle Series (PRS) competitors in the PRS 2017 Finale Gear Survey. MPA was also surveyed as the number one scope mount, number three muzzle brake, number five data board and number eight barrel.

“MasterPiece Arms has seen a rise in popularity over the past several seasons due in large part to their chassis design and competition specific features. The chassis forend includes the RAT (Rapid Adjustment Technology) System providing shooters with a variety of locations for bipods and other accessories and the Barricade Stop Technology has certainly changed the game on how shooters engage barricades and similar props. These features provide great stability and a significant advantage when “positional” shooting is required,” commented Mollie Tobias, the director of social media and sponsorships for PRS.

“It’s a great honor to be named the most used chassis/stock system amongst the top PRS competitors in the country. Not only are we manufacturers of these fine systems, but we are users of them as well, competing alongside other shooters using the systems we’ve built. We look forward to developing more products with the long-range precision shooter in mind,” said MPA’s President, Phil Cashin.

Aaron Hipp utilizing the MPA BA Competition Chassis.

Aaron Hipp, a PRS competitor since 2014, tied for sixth place at the 2017 PRS Finale, finishing 12th overall for the 2017 season out of 500+ shooters in the country. Hipp currently uses the MPA BA Competition Chassis for all his PRS matches, and leverages a wide array of MPA accessories developed for the chassis, including the Magnetospeed Chronograph Adapter, the Rapid Adjustable Technology (RAT) System, the Barricade Block and EVG Grip. He has used the system personally for three years and competitively since 2017. He noticed that his performance at matches improved quickly and consistently once he started to use MPA products at his matches.

“I use MPA products because they are designed with the precision shooter’s needs first and foremost. The MPA Chassis is the most reliable, stable and flexible platform I have used. This directly translates in my ability to put rounds on target accurately and quickly at extended ranges in any situation I may encounter, from insanely complex stage design to hunting situations, or even to those days when the weather makes you wish you would have stayed in bed,” remarked Hipps.

NRL Dog Valley Precision Challenge 2017

MPA has several configurations of its highly successful BA Chassis System, with the MPA BA Competition Chassis named the Official Chassis of the 2017 PRS. This competition version includes all the standards features of the original, but includes special enhancements that are designed to give shooters who utilize the competition chassis a competitive advantage when shooting in long range tactical rifle competitions, such as the PRS and related events. There are additional hole locations on the forend for locating the rotating barricade stop, which locks the rifle in place when shooting on a variety of barricade designed stages. The Trinity Rail System is used to attach a bipod to the chassis much closer to the magwell when shooting off oil drums or similar props to provide the shooter a rock-solid setup. This rail is designed to be added and removed based on the needs of the stage the competitor is shooting. The “Ryan Castle” magwell cut (not available for Tikka Inlets) is a modified magazine well that allows side loading of a magazine into the chassis. MPA has also eliminated the monopod system to reduce overall chassis weight, while providing a bag rider attachment for better rear bag recoil management.

IWI’s introduction of its Tavor TS12 bullpup shotgun was by any measure the mother of all news at this year’s Shot Show. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to shoot this 12 gauge Tavor.

This little gem, from the kibbutz, is one impressive tactical shotgun. The TS12 is  semiautomatic, gas operated and chambered to accept both 2-3/4” and 3” shells. The TS12 has an adjustable gas system that can be set for different loads or shooting conditions.

The magazine is a rather ingenious rotary array of three tubes. Each tube can be loaded with five  2-3/4” shells or four 3” shells, so depending on the ammunition used, the operator has a 15+1 capacity or 12+1. TSG-12-straight-facing-right-550

Once you’ve exhausted your first tube, pressing the tube release, located forward of the trigger and inside the trigger guard, allows the shooter to rotate a loaded tube into position and continue firing.

Ergonomics are excellent and what you would expect from a well designed bullpup. The weapon’s weight is shifted back towards the shooter’s shoulder making the muzzle light and controllable.

The TS12 is a 12 gauge shotgun and it retains that characteristic punchiness; although,  the bullpup design helped considerably. However, recoil was what you would expect from a 12 gauge.

Other nice features include a full length 12 o’clock rail and MLOK slots for a plethora of configuration options. All controls and ejection ports are fully ambidextrous and the tubes can be loaded from the right or left side – extremely flexible!

Availability is Q1 or Q2 2018. This is one you’ll want to pick up.

What Went Wrong at Parkland ?

Image result for Parkland

I’ll dispense with the obvious  mental health issues and the FBI dropping the ball. These were given shortcomings but I will talk about the mechanics of this tragedy.

911 should be confirmation that the United States is not impervious to terrorism. Reinforcing that, we saw the attacks in Paris, Nice, London, San Bernardino, Boston, Orlando, Miami/Fort Lauderdale. We hardened airports and critical infrastructure, but schools, the most vulnerable of soft targets, were ignored. The threat of terrorism is life as it exists today , but in the usual academic naiveté  most school districts did absolutely nothing. It’s time to reposition our heads so that the brain is fully oxygenated. Each school should have a professional security assessments done to identify risks from vehicular attacks and to identify ingress and egress vulnerabilities. The time to defeat an active shooter is at the access point not after they’ve started shooting.

Cruz, hit the fire alarm for the expressed purpose of drawing students in mass out of their classrooms and into a kill zone.  Were students directed not to respond to an alarms without an administrative announcement? Did the public address system even work?

The resource officer discussion needs some amplification. In the Parkland incident, a single armed officer took up a covered position outside the building. Let’s talk about that a bit. The officer making an entry would first need to locate the shooter. Inside a building, gunfire is difficult to locate. The shooter could be on any one of three floors, in a class room or hallway. That officer would single handedly need to move through the building and cover all angles of potential fire. Corridors, stairwells and doorways are kill zones, they funnel gunfire. Making matters worse, the officer would have encountered students running through the hallways; making engaging the shooter difficult and dangerous for students as well. So, single resource officers are generally ineffective. The Broward County Deputy should have shown more courage than was demonstrated, but make no mistake he risked taking direct fire from the shooter. However, once additional deputies arrived it should have been go time for all officers on the scene and that did not happen. Why?

No one in that school building had the ability, or training, to react to the shooter with lethal force. Teachers, administrators and / or maintenance personnel should be identified and designated as armed responders. Each should be background checked, receive weapons training, along with tactics overviews.

Students need to come forward and identify fellow students engaged in the sale of drugs or advertising gang affiliations. Those can be handled without compromising the source’s identity. Approximately 60% of all gun homicides in the United States are drug business related perpetrated by gangs. A fact that receives way too little attention. Where there are drugs there are guns period!

The gun control debate needs to take place but it’s a placebo. Why? It only impacts legal purchases! Illegal guns come from connections made in chat rooms and other social media venues. Police stations are broken into and guns stolen, straw purchases, retail gun stores are robbed and police vehicles are broken into, so there is a multitude of ways that someone can gain access to a firearm of any type.

Easy MOA and Mil Calculator For Android

A number of our readers have a need for ranging tools above and beyond the laser range finder. Laser range finders typically found in the commercial and military space can be detected, so you need to be able to optically range accurately using your reticle. This is a skill set that has eroded over the years yet it’s critically important. Ranging optically is usually done with tables or a slide ruler.

We ran across an Android app that is fast, accurate and easy to use called Easy MOA & Mil Calculator. Using this app, the shooter, or spotter, can quickly determine angle, width and range.

Looking at the screenshot below you can see that my target is 18 inches wide and at an estimated range of 350 yards. Based on the calculation, the target should be 1.43 mils across as observed through my optics.

In the screenshot below, I determine range to the target…

This is an excellent app to install on your device that will make ranging and tactical observation faster and a little bit easier.

BURRIS OPTICS T.M.P.R SHOT SHOW 2018

DSC_2344

While at Shot Show this year I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with Mike from Burris’ sales group and got a top down overview of the Burris Tri-Modular Prism Riflescope , T.M.P.R., a new offering that has a lot to get excited about.

First, the T.M.P.R. is a prism sight which means if reticle illumination fails you don’t lose your

Image result for Ballistic 3X

sight. Burris will be offering this sight in 3x and 5x, ideal magnifications for AR platform optics – both combat and DMR roles.

Second, the T.M.P.R. is a platform for integrating other accessories. For example, you can configure the prism sight with a Burris Fast Fire III red dot sight and a laser pointer module. What absolutely made my day is that all devices are powered from a common CR123A source. Reducing weight and eliminating the need to have multiple shooting aids scattered all over your Picatinny rail.

Third, the T.M.P.R. comes with an integral QD Picatinny mount so there’s nothing else to buy.

Finally, I was extremely impressed with the optical clarity and the generous field of view. The 3x has a 40 yard field of view at 100 yards and the 5x has a 24 yard field of view at 100 yards.

The Burris T.M.P.R. should be available in March 2018, M.S.R.P. for the 3x is $839 and 5x $899

DNA Labs International Links Convicted Killer to Another Murder Victim Using STRmix

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office submitted DNA from a 2009 murder and sexual battery case to DNA Labs International, a private forensic laboratory, who were able to identify Delmer Smith, a convicted killer, as her murderer.

Delmer Smith escorted by deputies into court. (Photo by Tiffany Tompkins, courtesy of Bradenton Herald).

Deerfield Beach, Fla. (February 2018) – In 2009, Delmer Smith was a suspect in a series of home invasions and sexual assaults spanning Manatee and Sarasota counties for months. He was caught and arrested in Sept. 2009 and later sentenced to life in prison for one Sarasota case, and sentenced to death for first-degree murder in a Manatee case. Now, nearly nine years later, Smith is being charged with murder and sexual battery in the April 2009 death of Georgann Lee Smith, who was raped and killed inside her home in Sarasota County. The new charge came about thanks to DNA evidence left at the crime scene and STRmix™ expert software, which did not exist at the time of the case.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office submitted DNA extracted from the victim’s clothes to DNA Labs International, a private forensic laboratory in Broward County, Florida, to process the evidence. By using STRmix™, DNA Labs International was able to identify Smith’s DNA from the sample taken from the victim’s clothing. Not only did the use of STRmix help to identify the perpetrator in the case, but it has also validated that STRmix is adequately robust enough for implementation in forensic laboratories and cases.

DNA Labs International specializes in forensic casework analysis using the latest technologies, including STRmix expert software, which is a breakthrough in forensic DNA analysis. STRmix allows for DNA Labs International to get results on samples that may have been considered inconclusive in the past. It is especially crucial in cold cases that were unsolvable in the past because of a complex DNA mixture. This expert software is also useful in cases with low-level DNA and partial DNA profiles or where there are no suspects and DNA from multiple people on a single sample.

STRmix has been crucial in helping resolve complex DNA mixtures commonly found when working sexual assault crimes and gun possession cases.

For more information regarding the case, read the full news report from the Bradenton Herald.

Doylestown, Pa. (February 2018) – The National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) is pleased to announce the winter edition of The Tactical Edge is now available. Widely considered to be the leading authority in tactical operations information, The Tactical Edge reaches more than 40,000 law enforcement officers throughout the United States, Canada and around the world.

Members-only features include “Impediments to Situational Awareness” by Bruce Liebe and “What Law Enforcement Needs to Know About Criminal Snipers” by Derrick Bartlett. Also featured is “The Dollars and Sense of Negotiating” by Jack Maxwell and Ronald Davis, and “Lessons in Leadership: Having Those Difficult Discussions” by Phil Hansen. The NTOA has also made several articles available online to nonmembers, including “Balancing High Operational Load While Sustaining Conditioning” by Shane Irving. The MPA Light Weight Chassis System is machined on MPA’s CNC Horizontal Machining Centers to exacting tolerances from 6061 aluminum. The v-bedding system provides additional clearance for glass bedding action and straight section of the barrel. The chassis also includes a built-in inclinometer, thumb notch, lower mounted Picatinny Rail and is spigot mount ready. The spigot mount is designed to be inserted in the front of the chassis to provide an extended distance between the front bipod and the rear support. A sling stud can replace the Picatinny rail if the customer desires.

The specially designed folding Compact Suppressor Ready (CSR) Buttstock comes with an adjustable length of pull and can store a suppressor up to 1.5″ in diameter (1.570″) and 8.5″ in length. This can take a suppressed rifle measuring up to 48″ in length and reduce the overall length to 23.5″ with the suppressor stored in the buttsock and folded/locked into a short barreled rifle (SBR) configuration.

The MPA MUT 308BA Rifle includes a precision gun drilled, reamed and honed Spencer / MPA rifle barrel made from 416RQ stainless steel. The hand lapped barrel is bore and land inspected on a video borescope. The chamber is indicated within 0.0001″ or less to the bore of the rifle. The Spiral Fluted One Piece Bolt with DLC coating is hand lapped and fitted to each individual action. The rifle is available as an SBR with a barrel length of 12.75″ or as a standard rifle with a barrel length of 16″ or longer.
