NSSF Commends President, Congress on Gun and School Safety Laws

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industries, today commended President Donald Trump and Congress for signing into law the omnibus legislation containing Fix NICS and Stop School Violence provisions. Both legislative measures were called for by President Trump and supported by NSSF as measures to help ensure firearms remain beyond the reach of prohibited individuals while respecting the rights of law-abiding firearms owners and working to keep children safe.
“The legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump is a true achievement to making communities safer while respecting individual rights,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president for government and public affairs and general counsel. “This law will enable the FBI’s background check system to work as intended, a longstanding goal for the firearms industry, as well as providing resources to states to improve mental health and intervention services critical to enabling authorities to proactively address potential threats in their communities.”
NSSF thanks Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) for his leadership to reach across party lines and gain support from 77 senators to make true changes that make communities safer while respecting constitutional rights.
“Fixing the background check system will help save lives and reduce the likelihood of what occurred in Parkland and Sutherland Springs from happening again,” said Sen. Cornyn in a press release.
Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) praised legislation for the measures to work with states to ensure all disqualifying mental health and criminal records are uploaded to the FBI and resources are available to intervene to prevent tragedies witnessed in Florida.
“This bill fixes and fully funds the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS), a critical step to keep guns out of the hands of people with a criminal history,” Speaker Ryan said in a press release. “It implements key provisions of the STOP School Violence Act to fund Department of Justice grant programs that help keep schools safe. Overall, the bill provides more than $2.3 billion in new funding for mental health, training, and school safety programs.”
NSSF launched the FixNICS® campaign in 2013 and worked successfully to reform laws in 16 states, resulting in an increase in the number of disqualifying mental health records in NICS to nearly 5 million, from about 1.7 million, a 200 percent increase. NSSF previously endorsed S. 2135, the Fix NICS Act by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), which topped 77 cosponsors. NSSF also endorsed H.R. 4909, the Stop School Violence Act, which overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Both bills were merged with the omnibus legislation and are now law.   
The legislation includes several other crucial provisions to important to hunters and recreational shooting. NSSF supported the inclusion of an additional $10 million for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to aide in reducing administrative backlogs. The legislation also affirms the policy that the Centers for Disease Control is enabled to study firearms, but that any study must adhere to longstanding restrictions of advocacy. Increased access to public lands for hunters and recreational shooters was included.
NSSF worked with Congress to include the Making Public Lands Public Act as a provision. This initiative ensures a portion of funds are permanently made available from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for land acquisition to ensure the public has access to the more than 38 million acres of isolated public lands either through ownership of private properties or geographic boundaries. NSSF is also proud to support the inclusion of the “Hunt Unrestricted on National Treasures” (HUNT) Act in the Omnibus, which would improve access to federal lands for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation by directing federal public land management agencies to identify federal lands where hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation are permitted but where access is unavailable or significantly restricted.

Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute Publishes Approved 224 Valkyrie Cartridge Specifications

ANOKA, Minnesota – March 27, 2018 – The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI) voted to approve the Federal Premium 224 Valkyrie as an official new cartridge during their committee meeting at the 2018 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada this past January. 224 Valkyrie’s SAAMI standards documents are now published and available to the industry as a whole, as well as to the public.
“It’s thrilling to have brought the world’s best MSR 15 cartridge to market. We’re proud and excited about our new cartridge, and we deeply appreciate SAAMI’s support with this launch,” said Federal Premium Ammunition President Jason Vanderbrink. “SAAMI’s approval of the cartridge was a crucial step in legitimizing it within the industry. Their work creates standards for the cartridge, increasing safety, interchangeability, reliability and quality for the dozens of firearm manufacturers currently building rifles in our 224 Valkyrie.”
SAAMI allows free access to technical data and drawings for the cartridge and chamber designs, which are posted in the Information and Specifications section of the organization’s website. All cartridge and chamber drawing documents are contained within the ANSI/SAAMI Standards and can be found on www.saami.org. The New SAAMI Cartridge Cartridge/Chamber Designs and Revisions for 224 Valkyrie can be viewed here: www.saami.org/PDF/224-Valkyrie-Introduction.pdf.
SAAMI was founded in 1926 at the request of the federal government and tasked with creating and publishing industry standards for safety, interchangeability, reliability and quality, as well as coordinating technical data. SAAMI’s Technical Committee, which consists of firearm and ammunition industry experts, reviewed the 224 Valkyrie submission over a period of about six months. The official cartridge name, maximum cartridge and minimum chamber dimensions, pressure limits, test equipment, and other characteristics are all considered and scrutinized during the process.
Federal Premium’s 224 Valkyrie is based on a 6.8 SPC case necked down to 22 caliber. It offers dramatically improved trajectories over all other MSR 15 cartridges, including the 22 Nosler, 223 Rem. and 6.5 Grendel—with roughly half the recoil of larger cartridges offering comparable ballistics, such as the 6.5 Creedmoor. Shooters can expect best-in-class ballistics, supersonic flight past 1,300 yards and extreme long-range accuracy from this exciting new cartridge.
The 224 Valkyrie is initially available in four loads: 90-grain Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing, 60-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint, 90-grain Fusion MSR and 75-grain American Eagle TMJ. Lyman Products Voluntarily Issues Recall on Black Powder Rifles and Pistols

The discovery of a potential for separation in the breech plug has spurred the recall program.

Middletown, Conn. (March 2018) – Lyman® Products has voluntarily announced a product safety warning and recall notice on their black powder rifles and pistols due to the potential of separation in the breech plug. Lyman maintains a safety-first approach, so despite finding only a few firearms affected and no reported injuries, Lyman is offering a recall program to have the issue corrected. Lyman regrets the inconvenience but remains committed to the safety of their customers.

The recall includes black powder rifles and pistols regardless of caliber including the following brands manufactured between March 1, 2017 to Dec. 22, 2017. Barrels with the serial number in the range of A595960 – A599025 are subject to this recall:

  • Deerstalker
  • Great Plains
  • Great Plains Hunter
  • Trade Rifle
  • Plains Pistol
  • Black Powder Kits and replacement barrels

This recall excludes Percussion Left-Hand Great Plains and Left-Hand Great Plains Hunter models. If a customer finds his/her product falls within the recall range, a customer service representative is standing by Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4:15 pm EST at 800-225-9626. Upon receipt of the serial number, and either the part number or model, Lyman will provide further instructions and packaging to ship the product to Lyman for replacement at NO COST to the customer. Lyman will provide a replacement barrel and tang with instructions or will replace the barrel and tang at Lyman and return the firearm. I’m a huge Colt snake fan and the company’s introduction of its Cobra line at Shot Show 2017 was an exciting moment. I had the opportunity to fire Colts newest revolver and found it to be every bit as good as its Anaconda but with the added benefit of concealability.

San Francisco Police Department Responding to Armed Robbery Suspects

This is body cam footage of San Francisco Police’s interaction with two armed robbery suspects. The arrest takes place in San Francisco’s Mission District on Capp Street, this area is south of Market St.

Years ago, the Mission was a safe neighborhood  with some great clubs and restaurants. Visitors could walk the streets and see a parade of Chicanos in low riders showing of their tricked out cars. It was not uncommon to see some amazing Chevy Impalas giving spectators a bounce. The only thing that was not safe in the Mission was the air suspension on a Citroën.

AeroVironment Releases New Puma 3, Upgraded for Operation in More Challenging Radio Frequency Environments

In addition, the Puma 3 incorporates AeroVironment’s latest digital data link (DDL) with security upgrades to support operation in more challenging radio frequency (RF) environments, with M1/M2/M5 and M3/M4/M6 frequency bands and with AES-256 encryption.

Sharpin said that, as part of ongoing efforts to stay at the forefront of battery technology, AeroVironment is releasing a new Puma smart battery that is more efficient and includes safety enhancements.  AeroVironment also has optimized the portability of Puma from six transport cases to four, with a flyable configuration in a single transport case that features luggage-type handles.  All these upgrades are incorporated while maintaining Puma 3’s renowned all-environment capability.

As previously announced, AeroVironment also is developing an upgrade to the RQ-11B Raven, called Raven 3.  The upgraded Raven system will incorporate new camera technology into the i23 gimbaled sensor, similar to advancements made to Puma 3 and its i45 gimbal.  These upgrades are still in progress and more information on Raven 3 will be available at the AUSA Symposium in October.

If you’ve made it through this week, we congratulate you and welcome you to our Friday shoot the shit. We try to do one per week, just to kick off the weekend.

A shoot the shit is a group discussion, not necessarily related to our normal blog topic, in which our readers are welcomed to participate in  even if you know nothing about the subject. Psychiatrists and psychologists do this all of the time. During a shoot the shit, you can make any unsupported comment, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone one you wish and/or altogether change the subject. Normally, you’d have to pay $150 per hour, or more, to a degreed impostor who studied a behavioral science so they could understand themselves. We, on the other hand, charge you nothing, and we really don’t care if you are in denial. So, let’s get things started.

Holy bat shit readers, can you believe what’s been going on. We had a couple of weeks of a wacko in Austin, Texas, planting and mailing bombs. Another genetic defect in Maryland went ape and shot his high school girlfriend before being stopped by a school resource officer thatImage result for aluminum strainer hat conducted himself like he had a pair. The good news in both of these cases is that the perpetrators will not be around to contaminate the gene pool. We also had a driverless UBER vehicle rundown a cyclist in Tempe, AZ. Making matters worse the backup driver was an ugly ex-felon chick. The victim’s family must be stepping over P.I. attorneys in front of their home.

Can someone please explain what the hell is happening? Are the alien portal in Malibu, CA opening, or are we being bombarded by the Venusian death rays?

As troubled as I found myself by the later three incidents, what really blew me away was Hillary Clinton. A staff member or Bill should hit her with a tranquilizer dart!

  1. First open mouth insert foot. White women did not vote for her because they associate with the Republican Party. These women were apparently too stupid to make a voting decision decision on their own; instead, they were instructed on how to vote by their boss, husband or other male figure. Hillary, my mother’s senior club has two African American ladies, life long Democrats, that described you as a “jive ass ho” during the 2016 election before breaking out into even less complimentary Ebonics.
  2. Second foot in the mouth comes when she accuses  Trump and Trump supporters (i.e. middle America) of wanting to take the country backwards. She continues saying that Trump was playing on the feelings of citizens in the “non-urban” United States – voters who “didn’t like black people getting rights,” or women getting jobs. Are you kidding me!
  3. And, last but not least,  during a Dutch T.V. interview, the former Secretary of State, when asked about a possible Ivanka Trump run for the Presidency says:

‘That’s not going to happen, we don’t want any more inexperienced Trumps in the White House.’

Secretary Clinton, please point me to a Constitutional requirement for prior political or public office experience. Most voters look for an I.Q. and a desire to serve the country and its people; not simply self.

I’d like to see Ivanka announce a run for the Office, but be prepared for another Hillary outburst…

YouTube’s New Policy Provides Cause for Concern

You may see media coverage of the adoption by YouTube of a new firearms content policy that has the potential to affect our industry and your business. 
YouTube’s announcement this week of a new firearms content policy is troubling.  We suspect it will be interpreted to block much more content than the stated goal of firearms and certain accessory sales.  Especially worrisome is the potential for blocking educational content that serves an instructional and skill-building purpose.  YouTube’s policy announcement has also served to invite political activists to flood their review staff with complaints about any video to which they may proffer manufactured outrage.  
Much like Facebook, YouTube now acts as a virtual public square.  The exercise of what amounts to censorship, then, can legitimately be viewed as the stifling of commercial free speech, which has constitutional protection. Such actions also impinge on the Second Amendment.

Facebook Precedent

In what we see as a parallel situation, Facebook has repeatedly shut down the pages of legitimate and reputable firearms retailers that were following Facebook’s own rules.  The interpretation depended on the reviewers, the vast majority of whom have little familiarity with our business practices, let alone our products, and many of whom do not even do their work from American soil. 
Both First and Second Amendment rights are essential to the liberty we enjoy as American citizens. In a very real sense, the de facto curtailment of First Amendment right of its firearm related business users, YouTube is edging toward simultaneously infringing upon the Second Amendment rights of the customers of these affected businesses.

Commerce in Firearms is Essential

As Circuit Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain wrote in his 36-page opinion, “Our forefathers recognized that the prohibition of commerce in firearms worked to undermine the right to keep and bear arms.”
This argument can be logically extended to social media platforms. It is time that social media platform management realizes its broader collective responsibility since it commands so much of today’s virtual public square. Suppressing the expression of First Amendment protected political speech and of commercial speech is wrong, even if they think they are acting in the public interest. The resulting impingement of lawful commerce in firearms that brings with it the infringement of Second Amendment rights is equally wrong and it should stop.
Tell YouTube that this new policy is a cause for concern. Ask that its implementation and review process be fair, fully informed and respectful of your business.  Please be polite and remember that the person on the other end will likely know little about firearms. Provide comments directly to YouTube.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 2018) – The National Tactical Officers Association(NTOA), along with eight of the nation’s most influential specialized law enforcement leadership membership organizations, will bring together their collective experience, subject matter expertise and unmatched reach in the field to establish the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services’ (COPS) Collaborative Reform Initiative Technical Assistance Center (CRI-TAC). Erik Agazim to Launch Law Enforcement Charity

Erik Agazim, the founder of National Police Ammunition, is celebrating the company’s 9th year in business.

(March 2018)  – National Police Ammunition, founded in 2009, is focused on lead-free alternative ammunition, specially designed and developed for law enforcement use. In celebration of the nine-year milestone, Agazim is founding EALEO Charities-Erik Agazim Law Enforcement Officers Charities-to give back to the law enforcement community.

The soon-to-be-founded organization will be divided into three main categories, according to Agazim. These will be merit-based scholarships, a foundation for fallen officers, and an equipment grants program. Merit-based scholarships will assist low-income cadets with the tuition and equipment required by police academies.

Meanwhile, the assistance foundation will provide support for fallen officers and their families, through work carried out directly with local police associations. Lastly, equipment grant programs will aid under-funded agencies with the critical equipment and training ammunition which they require.

“I’ve had the honor to work with law enforcement for the last nine years and have learned the challenges they face financially,” says Agazim of the project.

“From young cadets entering academies without the resources to purchase simple items such as holsters, to veteran SWAT operators who do not have the proper equipment, inhibiting their ability to conduct specialized operations, I’ve seen it all,” he adds.

Agazim continues, “National Police Ammunition will donate a portion of its revenue directly to the charity through its new parent company, Defense Engineering Systems.”

Initially, the charity plans to donate $500 each month to the Miami Dade Police Chiefs Association officer of the month, along with a further $1,000 to the officer of the year.

A website is currently under construction which will allow potential scholarship candidates to apply for student aid, which will be reviewed by the charity’s board. The website will also offer grant applications to agencies for specialized equipment and ammunition needed for additional training.

“Law enforcement has blessed National Police Ammunition over the last nine years,” remarks Agazim.

“I’m excited and grateful,” he adds, “to have the opportunity to give back to their community.”

Erik Agazim’s National Police Ammunition is already heavily involved with a number of local law enforcement charities and associations.

The company currently sponsors the Florida Police Athletic-Activities League, the Michael Callin Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

The Miami-based ammunition specialists are also proud members of the Miami Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the Florida Highway Patrol Command Officers Association, and the Florida Sheriffs Association.

Oefelein, DNA Labs International’s quality assurance manager and senior DNA analyst, has been announced as the Workshop Chair for the “Evaluation of Testimony Topics of 2018 – Preparing as an Expert Witness for DNA Testimony in Today’s Courtroom” Workshop at ISHI, held in Phoenix, Arizona, Sept. 24 – 27, 2018.


Deerfield Beach, Fla. (March 2018) – DNA Labs International, a private forensic laboratory in Broward County, Florida, announces that its very own Rachel Oefelein has been named the Workshop Chair for the “Evaluation of Testimony Topics of 2018 – Preparing as an Expert Witness for DNA Testimony in Today’s Courtroom” Workshop at the International Symposium on Human Identification (ISHI), to be held at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona, Sept. 24 – 27, 2018. This particular workshop will be held Sept. 27 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. The intended audience includes forensic scientists, students, attorneys, laboratory managers and training managers.

The presenters at this workshop have testified throughout the year, both nationally and internationally. An evaluation of common DNA testimony topics encountered in 2018 trials by analysts will be discussed. The panel will discuss specific questions received from prosecution and defense attorneys and possible responses in expert witness testimony. The workshop will be conducted in an open forum format where attendees will be encouraged to contribute and bring forward additional testimony topics. The workshop will conclude with a question and answer session in a mock court format. Questions and topics will be accepted by attendees both before and during the workshop.

During the workshop, attendees will gain a better understanding of:

  • Probabilistic genotyping (STRmix™ software and TrueAllele software)
  • The likelihood ratio
  • Phenotyping and forensic genealogy
  • Secondary transfer (including the most recent publications on transfer)
  • Next generation sequencing (NGS) / Massively Parallel Sequencing (MPS)
  • Responding to forensic implications from media publications/landmark court decisions
  • Introducing new technology to the courtroom: Daubert, Frye, Frye-Mack, Rule 702, etc.

Rachel Oefelein, Quality Assurance Manager/Senior DNA Analyst, DNA Labs International.

Rachel Oefelein is the quality assurance manager and senior DNA analyst for DNA Labs International. She received her MSc in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde and her BS in Criminal Justice, with a Forensic Science Minor, from Loyola University of New Orleans. Oefelein worked at the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) for nearly five years. She interned at the Forensic Lab in Krakow, Poland and is a board member for an animal rescue group.

Now in its 29th year, ISHI is a symposium focused on DNA analysis. Approximately 950 scientists, DNA analysts, law enforcement and legal and ethical experts from around the world gather to share the latest technologies, announce new product concepts and debate policy issues. The conference is open to all practitioners and suppliers of DNA analysis for human identification.
