We are pleased to introduce a special, limited edition 1911 from Ed Brown Products, Inc. in memory of the late Colonel Jeff Cooper. This commemorative 1911 is officially endorsed by the family of Jeff Cooper, and was designed in collaboration with them to render, as authentically as possible, what Jeff Cooper himself desired in a 1911. The final design was based on input from our builders, the Coopers, and many of Jeff’s closest friends and fans. The goal was to create a 1911 for combat shooting and personal defense that he would have been proud to carry.

A long time ago, I developed a dislike for using “feature rich” accolades because quite frankly many of the features captured in that hackneyed expression have zero utility, but there are exceptions and COAST’s TX14R is one of those.
I explain why in my review…
This week Paul Levy, chief of the Brownells product acquisition team, shows us the long and the short of hot new firearm releases. The KC9 from Ed Brown is a super slim, compact 1911 chambered in 9mm Luger (9x19mm) that’s all about daily carry. All-stainless steel, G10 grips, distinctive Snakeskin checkering on the mainspring housing and front-strap, external extractor for added reliability, bushing-free bull barrel, and a Trijicon HD fiber optic / Tritium front sight. Of course, the KC9 also has a sweet Ed Brown trigger and the shop’s legendary workmanship. On the other end of the size scale, Paul has the SRM Arms M1216 shotgun. The name says it all: a 12 gauge with 16 shots in a rotary magazine up front that also serves as the forearm. With acres of Picatinny rails for mounting ANY and ALL accessories you need, the M1216 embodies the word “intimating”!

Choate Machine and Tool Introduces the Choate Modular Stock, a Modular Chassis System For Remington Pattern Bolt Action Rifles
Bald Knob, AR – Choate Machine and Tool, a market leading designer, manufacturer and OEM supplier of rifle stocks, shotgun magazine extensions and firearms accessories, has introduced The Choate Modular Stock (C. Mod) chassis system. This is a true modular rifle stock, allowing the user to change the forend or butt stock without removing the rifle action from the main chassis section. This modularity provides the ultimate in adaptability and versatility while not disturbing the critical action-to-stock fit so reconfirming zero is unnecessary after configuring the system as needed.
The heart of the C. Mod rifle stock system is the precision CNC machined chassis. Made from a solid block of aluminum, the chassis rigidly holds the action while the desired butt stock and forend can be changed as needed. The chassis uses the time-tested AR style magazine release. This eliminates accidentally dropping the magazine by hitting a release lever located in front of the trigger guard. The C Mod. magazine will accept cartridges up to 2.860 inches in length such as the 308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor and 260 Remington, as well as other popular cartridges like 6mm Remington, 257 Roberts and 7X57 Mauser. Each C. Mod chassis comes with two magazines and the required action screws.

The ultimate in versatility is provided by the C. Mod Stock system of optional forends and butt stocks. Forends include a target/varmint style forend with a wide, flat bottom and a sniper/tactical style forend that is shorter and slightly tapered toward the muzzle end. Both come with a T-rail and bipod adapter. Butt stocks included two conventional types including a basic tactical style, a fully customizable target/tactical style with adjustable check piece and length-of-pull. Choate also offers two very specialized butt stocks for the C. Mod Rifle Stock including a telescoping AR style butt stock (compatible with any AR butt stock) and a pistol grip folding stock for the ultimate in portability. All butt stocks and forends come with the required hardware for rock solid installation.

The new Choate Modular stock is available for the Remington 700 short action and Remington Model 7. MSRP is $710 and includes the CNC machined chassis anodized matted black, the tactical forend and the tactical butt stock both also in matte black and two magazines.

You guessed it, it’s Friday and time to wind up a busy week to prep for Easter weekend. Hopefully, your time won’t be consumed by household choirs and you’ll have time to enjoy your Easter. It’s also time for our weekly shoot the shit. Given the week’s events, we all need it, even if it happens to be Good Friday.
New readers may wonder what a shoot the shit is, I’ll explain. Rather than spending $150+ per hour so you can share your thoughts and feelings with a jackass who studied psychology so they could understand themselves, the shoot the shit accomplishes the same thing with superior efficacy.
In a shoot the shit, the participant does not need to know anything about the subjects being discussed, they can make any unsupported comment or claim, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. They work great with office coworkers, buds and family members, so give it a try. If you can’t get your own shoot the shit going, join ours. It’s free and we love the interaction. So here we go.
Is everyone up to speed on the Notre-Dame fire in Paris? This 800 year old Parisian landmark is an extraordinary piece of world history, and on its own, it stands as a scepter for hundreds of years of history. The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in electrical wiring in the cathedral’s attic. The current estimate to reconstruct Notre-Dame is 8€ billion. The French government has committed to rebuild the cathedral in five years. Notre-Dame accounts for the lion’s share of tourism in Paris’4th arrondissement so it’s a huge financial hit.
I have to complement the 400 French pompadours for minimizing the fire damage and mitigating the risk of fire to the surrounding buildings. It was tragic to watch such an extraordinary site succumb to flames.
En français: Je dois compléter les 400 pompadours français pour minimiser les dégâts d’incendie et atténuer les risques d’incendie pour les bâtiments environnants. C’était tragique de voir un site aussi extraordinaire succomber au feu.
Democratic U.S. Presidential candidate, Pete Buttigieg , decided to deliver his heartfelt sorrow for the Notre-Dame fire in French to impress the audience with his language skills.
Pete has really disappointed me when he attacked Vice President Pence and his faith because he believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. What Pete attempted to do is assail VP Pence’s faith and core beliefs, not from a policy position, but by placing his faith and spirituality above Vice President Pence. Lack luster at best! I would love to know if Pete’s Christianity acknowledges the bible as the word of God, and what his thoughts are on Leviticus 20.
My read on Pete Buttigieg is that he is an academic at heart. Both of his parents are professors and his studies are consistent with academic aspirations. If any of you have ever had interactions with academics you’ve experienced that when they schedule meetings to address challenges, the first and second meetings are spent establishing each other’s credentials, which is quite likely what Pete was trying to do during his French discourse.
Pete Buttigieg was a reeeeeeeezzzzerv Naval Intelligence Officer, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. Lt. Buttigieg was in Afghanistan for a whopping 7 months during which time he probably spent the majority of his time approving leave chits and fighting his way to the officer’s mess; irrespective of that we thank him for his service.
If you look at his career you’ll note short periods of various activities all leading to his political pursuits. It seems fairly clear to me that Pete Buttigieg was designing a resume, but along that route did he create something of value. I’ve seen nothing to that effect but I’m open to any correction to that position.
Pete is a well educated individual, but readers I would rather sit through a looped TAKL APP commercial than listen to a Buttigieg rally.
Being the first openly gay President is appealing, especially to the Entertainment Industry, and I personally believe that sexual orientation is not a qualifier or disqualifier for Presidential Office, but if he’s elected, I sure as hell hope Pete Buttigieg won’t turn the place into La Cage aux Folles 2 – La Maison Blanche.
Have a great Easter!

Correction: Notre-Dame is 850 yrs old.
U.S Customs and Border Protection awarded Glock Inc. an $85 million contract to supply G19, G26 and G47 pistols, but has anyone seen a G47. Is it a Big Foot story? Not even! The Glock 47 was specifically developed for DHS CBP. Huh? Not only that but it will not be available commercially!
Here’s the 30,000 foot view…
The G47 is assembled with a full length slide on a G45 frame with a flared magazine well. Note that a G17 slide will not fit the G47 although they are the same length. We’ll be keeping an eye out for any new insights, including why it won’t be commercially available.

Brownells Adds BRN-180S™: Short-Barreled Version of BRN-180™
GRINNELL, Iowa (April 17, 2019) – Hot on the heels of one its most-exciting SHOT Show launches ever, Brownells has unveiled the BRN-180S – the new, short-barreled version of the BRN-180 complete upper assembly debuted at the 2019 SHOT Show.
Designed in conjunction with Primary Weapons Systems and FM Products, the BRN-180S retains all the desirable features of its big brother, but has a 10.5″ barrel for those wishing to build an AR-180-style pistol, or –with the required ATF paperwork and tax stamp – a short-barreled rifle (SBR).
Another new feature on the BRN-180S is a clearly-marked adjustable gas system, allowing the user to quickly tune the upper for either unsuppressed or suppressed shooting.
“The reaction to our 2019 SHOT Show announcement of the original BRN-180 was one of the largest, most-positive we’ve seen,” said Brownells Director of Product Management Paul Levy. “The most-common request from customers was for us to come out with a short-barreled version of the BRN-180. Thanks to PWS and FM Products, we were able to do that.”
Available for pre-orders now, the BRN-180S will make its first public appearance at the 2019 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits April 26-28, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Built around a short-stroke piston system, the BRN-180S drops onto any mil-spec AR-15 lower and makes it easy to attach either a folding pistol brace or folding stock.
Just like the BRN-180, the BRN-180S can be fired while folded.
Features of the BRN-180S Upper include:
Listed on the Brownells website as #078-000-537, the BRN-180S upper assembly retails for $799 and does not require an FFL to purchase.

Meprolight USA® bringing their cutting-edge red dots and sight systems to the 148thAnnual National Rifle Association Meetings & Exhibits in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Middletown, Penn. (April 2019) – Meprolight USA®, the US sales and marketing division of Meprolight®, a world leader in a variety of optic solutions from electro-optics sights, self-illuminated night sights, and innovative pistol sights, are pleased to display to attendees at the 2019 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits a wide array of their world-renowned red dot and thermal sights. They will also show their new augmented reality weapon sight system, the MEPRO FORESIGHT. Meprolight’s latest line up will be at booth 1420, April 26 – 29, 2019 at the Indiana Convention Center, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Meprolight, an international company developing electro-optic systems for military, law enforcement, and sport shooters, opened its US facility in early 2019 to better serve their growing US market. At the 148th NRA event, Meprolight’s sales and marketing team will be demonstrating a variety of their new developments including the MEPRO FORESIGHT, the first augmented weapon sight on the market today, providing essential tactical data projected right on the transparent optical lens in real-time (battery level, sensor data, Bluetooth connectivity and in the near future, a shot counter).
The new upgraded MEPRO RDS PRO V.2 electro-optical red-dot sight is the latest generation featuring an optimized combination, more brightness positions (16 brightness levels compare to four brightness levels in its predecessor), supports both red and green aiming patterns and multiple selections of aiming patterns all through a large crystal clear, transparent display window.
The newest addition to the MEPRO RDS and RDS PRO series, the MEPRO MicroRDS, is a small, rugged, energy efficient, electro-optical red dot sight designed for handguns, shotguns, and rifles with a large display window and a clearly defined red-dot for fast target acquisition with both eyes open. The MicroRDS Kit includes a patent-pending dovetail adapter with a quick release mechanism that allows mounting and dismounting the MicroRDS on the gun with a click of a finger. The adapter includes high-quality Meprolight Night Sights that allow accurate and fast shooting under any lighting conditions when the MicroRDS Optic is removed.
Varmint hunters require sights that allow them to detect targets in total darkness and Meprolight has them covered too with the MEPRO NYX-200, a multispectral dual-channel thermal weapon sight. This robust sight is available in several configurations, all providing a high-resolution thermal channel with 640×480 microbolometer core and a 17µ pixel size. It also provides a sensitive camera channel featuring a 1280×640 microbolometer core low-light or day camera. It can quickly be changed from hand-held to weapons mount and vice versa.
For professionals requiring a multi-purpose sight capable of day/night integration and fast transition between long range and CQC situations, the MEPRO MOR PRO reflex sight with two laser pointers (visible and IR) will become their go-to sight. The passive reflex is self-illuminated for any time use and the active reflex offers an extra bright LED dot for special lighting circumstances. Red or green laser pointers for urban or close quarter scenarios can easily be activated. An IR laser pointer for covert operations gives the user the ultimate advantage. The MEPRO MOR PRO’s combined zeroing system co-aligns the aiming pattern and the two laser pointers into a single zeroing procedure, saving time and increasing accuracy.

German Precision Optics Expands Custom Turret Offerings
RICHMOND, Va. (April 17, 2019) — German Precision Optics (GPO), USA has announced the company has expanded its custom turret program to cover more of its riflescopes. Kenton Industry Custom Turrets are now available for six more scopes in the Passion line—the 3X 3-9×42, the 3X 4-12×42, the 3X 6-18×50, the 6X 1-6×24, the 6X 2.5-15x50i and the 6X 2.5-15x56i—to match the elevation turret to the ballistics of each customer’s favorite rifle and cartridge.
“Today’s shooter has very high expectations of the equipment,” said Mike Jensen, GPO, USA president and CEO. “At GPO, we aspire to offer superior solutions that increase accuracy at long distances. Kenton Industries is the premier leader in custom turret technology. We partnered with Kenton to provide highly accurate turret solutions for our Passion 4X 6-24×50 scope. We are excited to now expand that program to almost all of the GPO Passion riflescopes, as it is such a great value and benefit to our customers.”
Custom engraved elevation turrets to match the bullet drop from a specific rifle and load allow the shooter to easily dial in the yardage for precision shooting at any distance. Once set up, shooters simply range the target and dial the turret to that distance. This eliminates hold-over for extremely accurate shots without all the ballistic calculations or guesswork.

“Many Paths to Firearm Safety” Series Focuses on Gun Owners’ Responsibilities
NEWTOWN, Conn., and WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) today unveiled a new video series, “Many Paths to Firearm Safety,” to help new and potential gun owners understand the responsibilities they have if they decide to keep a firearm in their home.
The series reflects that more Americans — especially women — are buying guns for many different reasons, ranging from personal protection to recreational shooting. The central message is that while there are many different reasons why someone would choose to buy a gun, the common thread among them must be a commitment to store firearms responsibly when not in use so they can’t be picked up by a child, stolen or accessed by someone who may want to harm themselves.
“Firearms accidents and thefts are almost always preventable, and the key to preventing them is safeguarding the access key itself. Protecting and securing the means for accessing locked firearms is critical to their safe storage,” said BJA Director Jon Adler. “We want to push that message as much as possible. These new videos emphasize the importance of securing firearms safely in the home. We want to ensure that personally owned firearms are only accessible by their law-abiding, legal owners, and not by unsupervised children, criminals or persons who might harm themselves. The key is the ‘key’ to keeping firearms safely in the hands of those responsible for them!”
The videos portray three different gun owners and their stories of ownership, along with the steps they took to make sure they will handle and store their firearms safely when not in use. The portrayals of “Whitney,” “David” and “Mateo” are meant to be relatable to the majority of gun owners, whether they grew up with firearms or they are considering buying their first gun.
“Gun ownership and personal responsibility are inseparable, as our mantra, ‘Own It? Respect It. Secure It®.’ reinforces,” said NSSF CEO Steve Sanetti. “We want to make sure all gun owners understand that, and know we have the resources they need to help them store their firearms responsibly when not in use. For anyone who can’t or won’t take that responsibility, we strongly urge them not to own a firearm.”
The new videos are viewable online on the Project ChildSafe website.
Funding for the videos comes from a $2.4 million grant BJA awarded NSSF’s Project ChildSafe initiative in 2015. Project ChildSafe provides firearms safety education messaging and free gun locks to communities throughout the country in an effort to help reduce firearms accidents, theft and misuse.
About Project ChildSafe®
NSSF, the trade association of the firearms industry, launched Project ChildSafe in 1999 (originally as Project HomeSafe). Since 1999, the program has provided more than 38 million free firearm safety kits and gun locks to firearm owners in all 50 states through partnerships with thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country. That’s in addition to the more than 70 million free locking devices manufacturers have included, and continue to include, with new firearms sold since 1998. While helping to prevent accidents among children is a focus, Project ChildSafe is intended to help adults practice greater firearm safety in the home. More information is available at projectchildsafe.org.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – April 16, 2019 – Viridian Weapon Technologies is showcasing the FACT Duty™ Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC™) at the 61st Annual Conference of the Texas Police Chiefs Association (TPCA). The convention is taking place at the Galveston Island Convention Center in Galveston, Texas, April 16-17, 2019. Attendees will have an opportunity to discuss and sign up for a no-cost FACT Duty WMCTesting & Evaluation program at booth #320 and can take advantage of an exclusive show special during the conference.
“A number of police departments in the state of Texas are in various stages of testing and implementing the FACT Duty WMC, and the TPCA conference is the perfect platform to discuss the technology with other agencies,” said Viridian President and CEO Brian Hedeen. “Our WMC provides a truly unobstructed perspective that did not exist before, and it’s our hope that the technology helps officers in Texas and all across the country feel better equipped for situations they may face while on duty.”
The highly advanced FACT Duty WMC employs a 1080p full-HD digital camera with a microphone and 500 lumen tactical light. This unique weapon-mounted camera provides a clear view of critical use-of-force events from the end of the firearm, addressing limitations officers can face with body cameras. Viridian’s proprietary INSTANT-ON® technology automatically activates the camera and microphone whenever the officer draws the firearm from its holster. Not only does this eliminate risk of failure to manually turn on the camera during a critical event, but it also keeps the officer from fumbling with cumbersome equipment. Body and dash cameras were not designed to capture officer-involved shootings. However, Viridian WMCs were designed specifically for this purpose.
At this year’s TPCA conference, booth visitors who enroll in the free Testing &
Evaluation program will be eligible to receive a free Tactical Backpack while supplies last. This show special is an exclusive token of appreciation for qualified T&E sign-ups during the TPCA conference.
More information on FACT Duty WMCs and other Viridian sighting solutions can be found online.

Heckler & Koch’s VP9 is either loved or despised by shooters, I could not find middle ground between these extremes. Those who hate it fall under a category of shooters that I call “bring back the MK23 cult.” HK introduced the VP9 mid-year 2014, it was its second striker fired pistol; preceded by the P7, which was introduced in 1980 and HK’s first production run of a striker pistol.
We’ll be reviewing the VP9 during May and reduce our opinions and shooting impressions to writing for you. Stay tuned.

MSG Gary Gordon
Gary Gordon was born in Lincoln, ME in the year 1960. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Army. On October 3rd, 1993, while serving as Sniper Team Leader during the Battle of Mogadishu, MSG Gordon distinguished himself by actions far beyond the call of duty.
When a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down by enemy fire, and there were no ground forces nearby to secure the crash site, Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart volunteered to be sent to the crash site to protect the four critically wounded men from oncoming Somali militants. Equipped with only a sniper rifle each and a pistol, these men fought their way to the injured men and valiantly protected them.
When SFC Shughart had been fatally wounded, and MSG Gordon’s rifle ammunition had been entirely depleted, MSG Gordon returned to the helicopter wreckage to recover a rifle with the last five rounds of ammunition. Then, he selflessly handed the rifle to the injured pilot with the words “Good luck”, and he continued to defend using his pistol until he was fatally wounded. The actions of these extraordinary men saved the pilot’s life.
MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart were each posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on May 23rd, 1994 for their heroic service above and beyond the call of duty.

The Memorial
We are keeping the legacy of MSG Gary Gordon and his team alive by building a statue of Gary atop a pedestal. The Memorial will include plaques, which will list the names and units of all the men who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Gothic Serpent in Somalia. The Memorial will reside in Veteran’s Park in Gary’s hometown of Lincoln.
