NSSF and Walker’s Work to Mentor the Next Generation of Hunters and Shooters

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) and Walker’s have launched a mentor initiative that encourages experienced target shooters and hunters to invite new individuals to the range or field. The campaign is part of NSSF’s Mentor Pledge initiative developed to facilitate growth of the shooting sports community through education, safety and fun.

As an incentive, NSSF and Walker’s are providing free Razor Ear Muffs (valued at $69.99) to the first 2,000 mentors. Participants must sign a pledge online and share a photo or short video of their experience with a new hunter or shooter in order to claim their reward.

“We are thrilled to play a part in supporting the next generation of hunters and shooters,” said Ben Smith, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Walker’s. “This partnership with NSSF is the perfect opportunity for our company to give back to the shooting sports community.”

Readers, I hope you’ve all had a great week and wish you an even better weekend. I’d like to invite you to participate in my weekly shoot the shit. This is a social interaction where I discuss one or two topics. In a shoot the shit, you are free to participate even if you know nothing about the subject.  You can make unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone you wish or change the subject altogether. The alternative is to pay some jackass, who majored in psychology so they could understand themselves, $150 or more, per hour,  so they can tell you that you’re in denial or suffering from an obsession if you like the female print of yoga pants.  Let’s get started.

The Equalizer 2 Poster

Equalizer 2, an excellent film starring Denzel Washington as Robert McCall. The only disappointment was not having a sex scene in which McCall looks at his watch.

Mile 22 Poster

Mile 22, yet another excellent film starring Mark  Wahlberg as James Silva. In Mile 22 we see Mark Wahlberg speaking faster than ever before. Mile 22 is a closet commando’s extravaganza. Shooting and moving, hand to hand, double taps, RPGs, vehicle firing drills, every conceivable fantasy the closet commando could have is included.

When I was in the service of our country, we rated movies on the basis if they had tits and motorcycles in the third reel. Anything missing those attributes was unacceptable and summarily rejected. All of the movies I’ve suggested meet that criteria at some point in the movie. Ergo, all three are highly recommended.

Next, allow me to talk about the Trump and Michael Cohen spectacle. Although we’re shooting the shit here, please keep me honest. I welcome any comment that can add clarity on this issue.

POTUS had a consensual affair with pornography actress Stormy Daniels ( Stephanie A. Gregory Clifford) in 2006. On or about September / October of 2016 she decides that she wants to go public about her affair with Presidential candidate Donald Trump. I don’t know if she contacted Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen or if Cohen contacted her but somehow, Cohen ends up paying her $130,000 in October 2016,  and for consideration received, she enters into a nondisclosure agreement with Donald Trump via Michael Cohen, his attorney. It was alleged that the payment resulted in campaign financing violations for which Cohen pleaded guilty.

That’s roughly the sequence of events. Now, please answer the following questions for me:

  1. Why wouldn’t Cohen simply tell Ms. Daniels to buzz off and let her go public, which, by the way, she started to do in 2011. I’m fairly certain that if extramarital affairs  were disqualifiers for the Presidency we wouldn’t have a President ? What’s the issue, even if he dressed up as Batman?
  2. Why didn’t Cohen advise Trump that making a payment to Daniels could have campaign finance implications. Trump has never run for public office. So, was Cohen incompetent or were there other motivators?
  3. Why did Cohen record that specific conversation with Donald Trump, his client, and why was the recording both doctored and incomplete, according to media reports?

NTOA’s 35th Annual Law Enforcement Operations Conference and Trade Show is Filling Quickly – Still Time to Register!

Fort Worth, Texas: Due to the rise in popularity of Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) rifles and after careful research and development, CMC Triggers has launched their own PCC Trigger. While PCC shooting has been around for a while, it has recently become popular for competition shooting. USPSA now allows the PCC to be used in matches. Carbines are easier to shoot fast, and easier to shoot accurately compared to handguns.  Many 3-Gun shooters have also found that shooting USPSA with a PCC is a good way to get rifle practice for 3-Gun.

Emil Praslick offers insights on the techniques of Wind Reading. Troy Lawton will provide the basics to become a competent handloader in his Precision Handloading class and Kestrel will demonstrate the importance of how, when used, a long-range shooter can generate accurate values of most atmospheric conditions in order to obtain an accurate firing solution.

It’s Friday and I’m looking forward to this weekend. I hope you’ve all had a productive week and have some fun plans for your weekend. I’m going to see the new Mission Impossible flick, I’ve heard some good things about the story and special effects.

Friday is when we have our shoot the shit. We try to have some fun with this event while imparting a little  information for you. A shoot the shit is a social interaction where participants need not know a thing about the topic. Participants can make as many unsupported statements as they want (it’s like watching the mainstream media), participants are free to use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. We don’t charge you $150+ an hour and we’ll never say to you that you are in denial. So, let’s get started…

You’ve undoubtedly  heard that Aretha Franklin passed on Thursday, at age 76. She was an amazing artist. I have never been in a strip or gentleman’s club were the dancers did not perform to “Rock Steady.” We extended our sincere condolences to her family.

Now here’s a USMC Sargent, Rob Baker, who is distraught by a water leak. The poor guy sounds like somebody destroyed his house. Marines are our brothers and sisters but I’ve served with a few which is the reason I know that Rob didn’t know to turn off his cold water supply to the water heater. Rob blue is the cold water feed to your heater bro! Just shut your cold water off upstream!

On a more serious note, and I wish the media would expand its scope of coverage on  this issue, our relationship with Turkey is shaky and Secretary Pompeo has his job cut out for him. Turkey is vital to NATO and Russia because they control access to and from the Black Sea through the Bosporus Strait. If you are in the Mediterranean and want to get to the Black Sea, you navigate the Bosporus. Likewise if you’re in the Black Sea and want access to the Mediterranean you too must navigate the Bosporus.

Currently, there are two U.S. bases in Turkey, Incirlik and Izmir Air Bases. If we loose Turkey to Russia, it’s quite likely that Turkey will ask the U.S. to vacate those bases. If that happens the only options are Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine for potential U.S. Air Base sites, which the Russians will not take lightly. You can also expect that we’ll lose access to the Black Sea through the Bosporus.

A very dicey situation that could have very serious consequences. Tough, tough, job! Fortunately, POTUS has an outstanding Secretary of State, but he’ll be earning his keep with this one!

What is the MST-100?

Originally the MST-100 was developed by a joint effort between the U.S.M.C. and the John Unertl Optical Sight Co. in Pennsylvania. Around 1977-1979 the first deliveries were made to the Corps. John Unertl Co. continued to make the scopes until about 1999. After John’s death, Elsie Unertl could no longer keep up with replacements and repairs. She suggested the Corps contact U.S. Optics. Major Tafalla and the pertinent personnel from System Command came to the USO office in California in 2000 and surveyed the premises. Shortly thereafter, USO was contracted to refurbish, repair and replace the scopes in U.S.M.C. inventory. In addition, USO has modified, re-engineered and improved the scopes per U.S.M.C. requirements for the M40A1 and the M40A3.
The MST 100 is a fixed 10x optic with a 1″ tube. This optic is made out of steel and has a ‘recoil proof’ mil-dot reticle.

WEST HENNEPIN POLICE DEPARTMENT IMPLEMENTS VIRIDIAN® WEAPON-MOUNTED CAMERA

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – August 14, 2018 – Viridian® Weapon Technologies announces that the West Hennepin Public Safety Department located just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota has deployed the FACT Duty™ Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC™) to all of its officers. Viridian and West Hennepin will hold a joint press conference to discuss this milestone on Thursday, August 16 at 10:00 a.m. at the West Hennepin Public Safety Headquarters in Independence, Minnesota.
The FACT Duty fits officer weapons and holsters and records automatically, providing an unobstructed view from the end of an officer’s firearm. The need for this product continues to be validated in current events throughout the United States and locally in Minnesota.
“For our department, the FACT Duty just makes sense,” said West Hennepin Chief of Police Gary Kroells. “This gives us the coverage we need and fits our budget. We looked at Body Cams but their administrative requirements and data management made them impractical for us. The FACT Duty will provide clear evidence if an officer is forced to use their service pistol. We were one of the pilot programs for this product and made our decision based on training and field data.”
Viridian has created an important new category for law enforcement with the introduction of the FACT camera. This unique Weapon-Mounted Camera provides an unobstructed view of critical use-of-force events from the end of the firearm, addressing limitations officers can face with body cameras. The highly advanced WMC employs a 1080p full-HD digital camera with a microphone and 500 lumen tactical light. Viridian’s proprietary INSTANT-ON® technology automatically activates the camera and microphone whenever the officer draws the firearm from its holster. Not only does this eliminate risk of failure to manually turn on the camera during a critical event, but it also keeps the officer from fumbling with cumbersome equipment.

Easy Implementation
FACT WMCs do not require the purchase of supplemental equipment or services and are designed exclusively to answer the needs of today’s officers. The WMC generates just a small fraction of the data to manage compared to other law enforcement recording options because it only records when the officer’s weapon is drawn. This results in significantly lower comparative data management costs. The WMCs fit on existing standard-issue firearms and fit seamlessly in multiple duty holster platforms. The cameras feature a recording time of over three hours to handle virtually any scenario. They also incorporate secured data access and are easily rechargeable.
Body and dash cameras were not designed to capture officer-involved shootings. However, Viridian WMCs were designed specifically for this purpose.

Category Creation and Importance Today
The need for this technology was recognized several years ago. While the product was in development, events continued to unfold that only increased the urgency for Weapon-Mounted Cameras for police officers across America. Viridian’s home state of Minnesota has been in the spotlight for these events.
Only miles from Viridian’s headquarters, City of St. Anthony police officer, Jeronimo Yanez, fatally shot Philando Castile. Yanez was eventually acquitted in the case, but it was the source of violent outbreaks and massive protests and still fuels anti-law enforcement sentiment today. It has now been nearly a year since the Justine Damond shooting in Minneapolis in which the police officers’ body cameras were not even activated. Officer, Mohamed Noor, has since been charged with murder. Further developments in the Damond case now have the City facing a massive lawsuit based partially on the Body Cams not being activated rather than the shooting itself.
“As we closely monitor these events around the country along with the aftermath when affected parties do not believe justice was served, we realize that our solution cannot be implemented soon enough by more departments,” said Matthew Plowman, General Counsel at Viridian. “Much of the controversy, like in so many past incidents and trials, was what the officer saw when pulling the trigger. The FACT Duty is a tool to provide objective evidence both for potential legal proceedings and police communication to the general public to help eliminate the uncertainty in officer-involved shootings that is the source of much conflict.”

National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) Celebrates 35th Anniversary with Release of the Summer Edition of The Tactical Edge

The complete professional journal of the law enforcement special operations community is now available to members of the NTOA.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (August 2018) – The National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) is pleased to announce the summer edition of The Tactical Edge is now available. Widely considered to be the leading authority in tactical operations information, The Tactical Edge reaches more than 40,000 law enforcement officers throughout the United States, Canada and around the world.

The summer edition of The Tactical Edge celebrates the NTOA’s 35th anniversary of its founding. The Tactical Edge has been integral from the beginning and continues to be a major benefit and prime communicator to the NTOA membership.

Members-only features include “Tactical Teams: Pitfalls, Perils and Positive Performance” by Steve Ijames and “Policing Scheduled Events: A Planning Primer” by Bruce Liebe. The NTOA has recently released the updated 2018 Tactical Response and Operations Standard (TROS). Seeking input from NTOA members, state association presidents and federal partners, the final review committee consisted of 20 participants, each bringing valuable input from the organizations they represent. In “NTOA Tactical Response and Operations Standard: An Evolution,” the NTOA discusses the process of updating the Standard to meet today’s demands. Kevin Gerold’s “Standards for TEMS: NTOA Tactical Response and Operations Standard for Law Enforcement Agencies Updated to Include TEMS” reflects on the NTOA’s history as a leader in TEMS advocacy and training and discusses the inclusion of it in the 2018 TROS.

The Tactical Edge has been providing the law enforcement community with cutting edge, lifesaving information from leading experts for more than 30 years and is the winner of multiple awards, including the 2006 American In-House Design Award from Graphic Design USA and the 2013 APEX Award for Publication Excellence from Communications Concepts. NEWTOWN, Conn. — Breaking a flying clay target or knocking over a steel plate and then sharing the fun of that experience awaits all who participate in National Shooting Sports Month® this August.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) established this celebration to encourage you to spend trigger time at your local shooting range and share your passion for the shooting sports with others.
