Tripwire Operations Group, LLC is a leading provider of explosive products, explosives training, K9 training, and tactical operations training for federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and military units. Tripwire currently maintains an 11,500 square foot training facility on a nine-acre tract of land in Gettysburg, PA. We conduct training classes for military units and first responders of all levels at the site, which is staffed by former military EOD and civilian bomb technicians that are highly experienced in the handling of energetic materials. Additionally, Tripwire is staffed with skilled K9 trainers, firearms instructors, and tactical operators.

We just wanted to take a moment and remind you of the life expectancy of the products contained within our K-9 kits. Explosives, as with most things, decompose and begin to “break down” over time. This decomposition may or may not affect the physical characteristics and outward appearance of explosive materials, which may appear serviceable and will still function as designed (explode when initiated with proper demolition methods). However, the physical appearance and ability to detonate is not the major concern when it comes to K-9 detection of explosive materials — it’s the scent (odor) characteristics and how they are affected by decomposition. When a material begins to decompose its odor molecules begin to evaporate and then move via diffusion and bulk air movement to the dog’s nose. Once there, the dog must recognize the odor and determine its source direction, which enables the dog to move towards the source based on increased concentration. The concentration of the odor at the dog’s nose will be a function of both the source strength (evaporation rate) and its movement and dissipation in the air. What does this mean for K-9 explosives detection? This means your explosives will decompose at a molecular level, which will change the odor being evaporated from the material and ultimately altering the scent signature of that material, before you notice a physical change in their outward appearance. This process may be slowed through proper storage, use and handling techniques, but ultimately cannot be avoided. Moreover, the process of decomposition may be accelerated by factors beyond your control – average ambient temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, etc.
The use of older explosive materials that have begun to decompose and present an altered scent signature may result in improper scent imprinting, which could prove to be catastrophic if your dog “walks” or misses improvised explosive device (IED) or other explosive materials during a real-world sweep. You and your K-9 partner need to be training with materials of the highest quality in order to ensure your effectiveness and efficiency when performing your duties. This is why we highly recommend that our Explosives Detection K-9 Training & Proficiency Kits be replaced by their owning agencies on an annual basis.
Yes, there are some products inside our kits that will last much longer than others, but there are also some that will degrade much faster. Items such as Dynamite, Emulsion, Watergel, etc. are extremely hygroscopic and constantly absorb and release moisture from the atmosphere, which facilitates faster rates of decomposition. Given the varied rate of decomposition amongst the materials included in our K-9 kits, we’ve averaged the expected serviceable life span (from an odor perspective) to be one (1) year.

Beginning in 2013, trials, errors and re-designs led to the introduction of the Reaper Rest, a tripod-mountable system that changed the way law enforcement and military operators were able to engage targets with precision accuracy. Shortly after the Reaper Rest was developed, Gabe Snyder joined Matt and Garret as a partner and began managing product design and development. Gabe’s efforts enhanced design, development and patentable innovation efforts tremendously and, in 2015, Kopfjager unveiled the Reaper Grip.
