NSSF’s Project ChildSafe® program will encourage locked storage of firearms when not in use
NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation®is making available firearms safety education materials to Texas communities after being awarded a $1 million grant earlier this year from the Office of Governor Greg Abbott. The goal of the initiative is to help reduce firearms accidents, theft and misuse, including suicide.
Texas selected NSSF as the recipient of the grant because of the strong track record of NSSF’s Project ChildSafe program, which for two decades has provided genuine firearms safety education to communities in all 50 states and the U.S. territories. Project ChildSafe is a firearms safety program created by gun owners for gun owners. It has distributed more than 38 million free firearm safety kits that include a gun lock through partnerships with more than 15,000 law enforcement departments.
“We are very grateful to the state of Texas for this $1 million grant and for their confidence and trust in NSSF and the Project ChildSafe program to promote responsible firearms ownership,” said NSSF President Joe Bartozzi. “We’ll be reminding gun owners that there’s a safe storage option that fits their lifestyle — whether it’s a gun lock, lockbox or full-size gun safe — that will help keep guns out of the wrong hands.”
NSSF has been the recipient of many grants to support expansion of its award-winning Project ChildSafe program, including most recently a $2.4 million federal grant through the U.S. Department of Justice-Bureau of Justice Assistance.
NSSF will make its Project ChildSafe firearm safety kits, which contain a cable-style gun lock and safety brochure, available to communities through law enforcement agencies. The firearm safety kits can be ordered by law enforcement via the program’s website. In addition to the gun locks, partners will receive a poster reminding gun owners of the many gun safety resources at ProjectChildSafe.org, including firearm safety videos featuring McGruff the Crime Dog for young children, a video on how parents can talk to their kids about gun safety, a firearms and suicide prevention brochure, a child safety pledge and an infographic illustrating various safe storage devices for different lifestyles and budgets to secure firearms when not in use. NSSF’s “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.®” campaign is a component of all Project ChildSafe initiatives.
“We are looking forward to working with Texas communities and emphasizing that securely storing firearms when not in use is the number one way to help prevent accidents, misuse and thefts,” said Bartozzi.
Safe storage of firearms works. Fatal firearms accidents have declined by 50 percent from 1997 to 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with unintentional firearm deaths accounting for less than 1 percent of fatal accidents from all causes.

(NASDAQ: AVAV), today announced the second successful test flight of the HAWK30 solar-powered high-altitude platform system (HAPS) that took place on October 23, 2019 (PT) at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center in California.
The test flight reached altitudes higher than those of the previous flight, and was conducted continuously for approximately one hour and 30 minutes. The HAWK30 successfully achieved more than two dozen test points, including 180-degree turns and further validation of avionics, power and propulsion performance. The team also simulated precise landing control on the runway, similar to its commercial operation concept.

After operations at AFRC, HAPSMobile plans to transport HAWK30 to the Hawaiian island of Lanai and is accelerating preparations to perform stratospheric test flights at Lanai within the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020.

EAGLEVILLE, PA, November 5, 2019 – Streamlight®, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting, launched the compact and powerful FlipMateTM, a USB rechargeable light with a blade that rotates 270 degrees on its body to provide area lighting as well as color matching. Madrid, November 6, 2019.- Around 2,000 university students from 15 universities across Spain are competing in the Civil Guard’s Inter-University Cybersecurity League, based on Indra’s Cyber Range cybertraining solution. In it they demonstrate their ability to counter real cyber attacks and protect our country’s basic services and companies.
More than 100,000 cybercrimes were recorded in Spain in 2018, a figure double the one recorded only two years earlier. Mobilizing young talent to protect the digital economy, which will be the pillar of our development, is a critical task.
To do so, the Civil Guard has launched the largest competition held to date in Spain in terms of the number of universities and students involved.
Students from the Universities of Cáceres, Albacete, La Coruña, Huesca, Valencia, Murcia, Oviedo, Valladolid, Logroño, Alcalá de Henares, Polytechnic of Madrid and Carlos III have already competed with each other using the Indra solution. It’s now the turn of students from the Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of Granada.
The winning teams will meet up in the final, to be held at the Civil Guard’s University Center on 15 and 16 November in Aranjuez (Madrid).
This Cyber League is different from all those organized to date. The Civil Guard wanted the participants to face challenges set upon the basis of a multi-disciplinary perspective.
In addition to demonstrating their technical capabilities, the teams must apply their knowledge of law, in order to establish the responsibilities entailed by their actions in the technological field, as well as their knowledge of economics and business, so as to calculate the cost of their strategy, and communication, to manage any reputational crises.
The head of the Cybersecurity team at Indra explains that the Inter-University League is enjoying huge success: “In the initial competitions there were an average of fifty participants, but the figure has now doubled. For the events in Madrid, the students enrolled at the five universities where it will be held total more than 1,000”.

The students compete in Indra’s Cyber Range to demonstrate their ethical hacking and forensic analysis skills. The challenges to be overcome include finding evidence concealed in a system, detecting the vulnerabilities of a critical system and moving laterally and jumping from one system to another. In the forensic field, they analyze disks and computer memories and collect evidence.

It’s important to understand the difference between SDR and traditional or hardware-defined radios. This will provide the knowledge necessary for informed decision-making over whether your operation will benefit more from SDR or HDR.
We most likely know all about the mechanical components used in traditional or HDR. Antennas, dials and knobs, receivers, and the like, that transmit and receive signals via radio waves. They’ve been around for decades, and they work just fine for many applications. However, in most instances, once these components leave the assembly line, you cannot modify them. What you buy is what you get.
SDR, on the other hand, uses software modules and processors operating on a hardware platform to digitally recreate radio signal transmissions and receptions. This software may run functions that might include modulation and demodulation, frequency hopping and selection, or bandwidth changes, among a host of others depending on its specifications. Developers, service providers, and end-users can then configure and reconfigure the software to change the radio’s performance and capabilities so that it meets their specific needs.
There’s really no right or wrong answer to this question. Both SDR and HDR have their own benefits.
For instance, due to the longevity and maturation of HDR, many people feel comfortable using this particular type of technology. However, the mechanical and physical components, in addition to any upgrades and replacements, cost money. Compounded by the size of some operations, any upgrades and replacements can be quite costly. There’s also a lack of flexibility in the functionality of HDR.
Whereas, SDR provides that flexibility inherently missing from HDR technology. The ease of modifications and reconfigurations on the digital software makes updates and procedural repositioning a breeze.

I’m not sure how many of my readers are equestrians but you’ll still get a kick out of this. At the Helsinki International Horse Show, Finland, the electric needs for the FEI World Cup Jumping qualifiers come entirely from burning horse poop! You heard that right, they generated electricity from burning horse manure. Roughly 100 tons of manure was collected from 370 horses. Apparently, they’ve had this system in place in Helsinki, since 2015, to convert horse poop into juice. Since its inception, Reuters reports that about 70,000 tons of manure has been collected, providing heat to 1,250 customers along with contributing electricity to their national power grid.
So let’s do some math 100 tons of poop, 2,000 lbs. per ton divided by 370 horses equals 540.54 lbs. of poop per horse. That’s a lot of poop but it pales in comparison to what Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez puts out! Readers this is from a country that produces the Tikka T3 Tactical PN/GN and SAKO TRG rifles. They apparently feel that the technology is beneficial to countries where there is a large horse population. The flaw in that logic is that horses produce even higher amounts of flatulence than cows, and if the country needs to burn horse poop for energy they’re probably also eating the horses.
