Grand Sky Flying High as it Celebrates Five Years

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Grand Sky Development Company, LLC (Grand Sky), the nation’s first commercial unmanned aerial system (UAS) testing and training center, is celebrating five years of successful operations and dramatic impact to the North Dakota economy. The sky’s the limit and the plans for the future are more exciting than the first five years.

Built to support large UAS operations, the services and capabilities at Grand Sky has logged over 2,300 UAS flight hours due to partnerships and agreements with Grand Forks Air Force Base. Located on the base, and operating under an Enhanced Use Lease and Joint Use Agreement with Grand Forks County and Grand Forks Air Force Base, Grand Sky provides flight schedule certainty because of uncongested airspace and a high number of flyable days per year.

“We saw a vision for Grand Sky, and in just five years, it’s rewarding to see the success and new opportunities happening in North Dakota; it’s all been made possible due to our partnerships throughout the State and funding from our legislators,” Grand Sky Development Co. President Thomas Swoyer Jr., said. “There is much to celebrate across the Red River Valley, not just in the advancements and capabilities at Grand Sky but in the UAS industry across the state.”

The State of North Dakota has invested $18.5 million in infrastructure, and Grand Sky secured another $60 million in private investments. These investments have created more than 160 full-time jobs with average annual salaries of $70,000. Each year, due to the capabilities at Grand Sky for UAS and beyond visible line of sight (BVLOS) operations, research, development, testing and training, over 600 trainees and meeting attendees visit the region with an average stay of five nights. This equates to more than $19.2 million in annual economic impact to the state.

Grand Sky is one of only a few facilities in the United States able to provide BVLOS flight capabilities for UAS. Companies using this system can operate their aircraft without the requirement of a chase plane or ground based observers which saves them considerable costs. As a result, Grand Sky supports General Atomics Aeronautical Systems’ flight operations which included the company’s first trans-Atlantic flight from Grand Forks to London in 2018.

The commercial UAS industry is changing and Grand Sky is poised to accelerate that change. In the near future, BVLOS flight operations will become common-place for many companies and routine BVLOS flight will require new aircraft and new procedures to be successful.  To help usher in those changes, Grand Sky is working with UAS manufacturers to bring large UAS to the commercial world.

“There is no point in securing BVLOS capability if you can only fly for 45 minutes or only cover 500 acres an hour,” Swoyer said. “For the UAS industry to truly achieve economies of scale, we need to fly for many hours and cover tens of thousands of acres an hour or else we’re all just wasting time. 

“The flights need to bring a higher level of data management and analytics in order to maximize the value of change detection and create actionable information. In the near future, we need to bring large UAS into the commercial UAS industry to realize these new requirements,” Swoyer added. “Small UAS have a role but large UAS will define how the industry realizes the promise of UAS technology.”

Grand Sky plans to host a series of demonstrations this spring and later in the summer to demonstrate how large UAS will change the industry. 

“We see these demonstrations as a way to unequivocally show how large UAS will forever change the UAS industry and deliver actionable information to a wide variety of end users quickly and very inexpensively,” Swoyer concluded.

What the hell are the Democrats doing?

Readers it’s been quite a few weeks since we’ve had a shoot the shit, between SHOT SHOW and a death in my family I haven’t been keeping up with interesting events to shoot the shit about. For readers just dropping in, let me tell you what a shoot the shit is.

A shoot the shit is a freeform discussion during which any subject can be brought up. Participants don’t need to know anything about the subject matter but remain free to make any unsupported comment they wish. They can also use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. It is a social interaction, designed to keep you from fingering your iPhone and out of a therapist’s office. A therapist is a jackass who thinks he or she understands you, and usually one who studied psychology so they could understand themselves. Roughly 60% of students majoring in psychology do so to understand themselves, which accounts for the number of hosed up people walking the streets. Two states in the US have the largest  population of “licensed” psychologists, they are California and New York; followed by Pennsylvania  where the principal concentration is in Philadelphia. So, what does that tell you? It should tell you that a good shoot the shit is the better alternative to therapy, in both cost and efficacy.

Social Media and Pounding Your Pud

Have you heard about the Paris, France, mayoral election issue? A gentleman by the name of Benjamin Griveaux, the favored candidate and ally of  Emmanuel Macron, had to abandon the race because a sexually explicit video of himself surfaced on the internet.  Apparently, in 2017 or 2018 he sent a video of himself pounding his pud to a woman he met online.  In late 2019,or early 2020, the video was published online by an exiled Russian  performance actor, living in Paris, named Piotr Pavlensky . Apparently the woman Monsieur Griveaux was attempting to impress with either stamina or size is Piotr Pavlensky’s girlfriend. Mr. Pavlensky felt that Monsieur Griveaux, an advocate for family values, was being a hypocrite.

Interestingly, Piotr Pavlensky ran afoul of the Russian government  when he burned down a couple of buildings and nailed a testicle on a Red Square wall. Now, I was not able to confirm whether that was his testicle or someone else’s, but if that act is indicative of national character it could be a valid reason for President Trump’s desire to repair and strengthen relationships with the Russia.

Hopefully you’re all keeping up with the political scene, it’s like watching the three stooges. Elizabeth Warren decided to beat up Bloomberg during the Las Vegas Democrat Debate, she says: “I’d like to talk about who we’re running against: a billionaire who calls women ‘fat broads’ and ‘horse-faced lesbians,’”  “And no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump, I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg.” Now, this comes from a woman of highly questionable veracity, but can you imagine what her reaction would be had Bloomberg called her a a scrawny flat ass big mouth bar fly?

Next up is the Twitter and Congressional darling, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who the media describes as powerful and influential. AOC, wants her followers to know that our economy revolves around rich white men, which are of no interest to her. Instead she has families at the center of her heart.  So, who is AOC campaigning for? Bernie Sanders who is a rich white man. She also ran Amazon out of her district. The company would have added 125,000 new jobs with a median salary of $150,000. Think how that would have benefitted families in her district. So, come Nov 2020, New Yorkers should embrace MABA (Make Alexandria Bartend Again)

“A good shooting position is solid and stable,” Ford says in a video shot in collaboration with Swagger Bipods. Stability is critical to maintaining point of aim for a follow-up shot or to keep an optic on target to track bullet impact. The key to increasing stability is to have multiple points of contact with the rifle. Ford comments that standard bipods don’t work well to elevate his rifle above obstacles when on the hunt, but his Swagger Stalker QD72, used with other objects in his environment, allow him to build a shooting position that is solid, stable and rises above obstacles.

While working in the field, Ford recommends using a field pack to help build a shooting position. Using a pack to elevate a rifle above grass or brush, along with a quality bipod, utilizing a sitting or kneeling position and multiple points of contact, Ford stresses the importance of working with the environment to get on target, absorb recoil, and prepare for a follow-up shot.
Once a shooting position is established, and the rifle stabilized, Ford recommends “loading the bipod.” Loading the bipod is when a shooter leans into their bipod and applies pressure on the legs to help further stabilize the rifle by applying force that helps reduce movement and absorb recoil. Loading can only happen with a bipod. Ford notes, “with Swagger bipods, we can set up a stable position and load our bipod while we’re over the grass” or other obstruction. This is an added and unique benefit of the Stalker design since the Stalker 72 can extend up to seventy-two inches, critical for the shooter who wants stability over obstacles.
Ford also covers high angle shooting and reminds shooters to use laser range finders, ballistic software, and even an inclination angle compass on the rifle’s buttstock. Once again, the versatility of Swagger bipods helps Ford build a reliable and stable shooting position, this time aiming downhill at a high angle to reach his target.

ZEISS’ new ZMOA-T Series Reticles cater to hunters and shooters reaching out to longer distances for precise shot placement on distant targets, smaller targets, and smaller targets at longer distances. From the shooting range, to competition, to long-range open terrain hunting, the T-Series thin-line reticles offers an impeccably fast aiming solution and pinpoint accuracy.

The thin-line reticles are designed to cover the least amount of the target possible while maintaining sharp and easily visible lines that create a distinctive sight picture and aiming reference.  This gives the shooter higher levels of confidence in all shots taken, no matter how far down range. Each hash mark represents one MOA spacing. MOA references are easily identified with even numbers placed adjacent to the main vertical and horizontal lines of the reticle for quick reference. The floating center point of aim allows for precise shot placement, and floating dots left and right of the vertical centerline allow for windage calls and confirmation of bullet impact without guesswork.

Waterproof Pistol-Grip Spotlight Features Enhanced Down-Range Lighting

 

EAGLEVILLE, PA, February 18, 2020 – Streamlight®, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting, launched the Waypoint® 300, a rechargeable high lumen, pistol grip spotlight with enhanced down-range lighting capability.

Featuring 270,000 candela, a 1,039-meter beam distance, and 1,000 lumens on high, the Waypoint 300’s powerful long-range targeting beam is portable and runs for 3.75 to 87 hours on high, medium, low, respectively.

“The Waypoint 300 not only features extreme brightness, but also includes a beam that reaches over 1,000 meters,” said Streamlight Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Michael F. Dineen. “It can be used as either a handheld mobile searchlight, or, with its integrated stand, as a hands-free scene light to illuminate a scene. The Waypoint 300 uses power LED technology and a deep-dish parabolic reflector for long-range targeting with optimum peripheral illumination. On the medium setting, the light offers offers 550 lumens, 135,000 candela, and a 735-meter beam distance. On low, the light provides 35 lumens and 10,000 candela, with a beam distance of 200 meters.

The new light uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery that fully charges in four hours. A convenient LED charging indicator provides charging status.

The rugged Waypoint 300 features an unbreakable polycarbonate lens and is O-ring sealed. With a trigger-style switch for momentary or click on/off operation, the light boasts a cushioned handle grip that eliminates user hand fatigue. The light includes an adjustable, high-strength wrist lanyard, and features an integrated stand for hands-free lighting.

The lightweight Waypoint 300 weighs 1.52 pounds and measures 6.75 inches long by 7.14 inches high. It features an IPX8-rated design for waterproof operation to two meters, and is impact-resistant to one meter.

The Waypoint 300 is available in black and yellow and has an MSRP of $214.20. It comes with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Team GLOCK Takes Big Wins at USPSA Florida Open

 SMYRNA, Ga. – February 17, 2020 – Team GLOCK started out the season with sweeping wins at the 2020 Florida Open USPSA tournament in Frostproof, Florida.  All three members of Team GLOCK took away wins at the match and set the bar for the remainder of the shooting season.

As the first major competition of the year, Florida Open brings competitors from not only around the country but also globally to start their season off with a variety of challenging obstacles designed by Match Director Shannon Smith.  “Florida Open is always one of the hardest matches of the year,” said Team Captain Shane Coley. “This match always consists of technical stages, odd starting positions, long shots and a lot of moving targets with technical activators. No matter how much we train in preparation for it, Shannon always finds a way to expose our weaknesses.”  Coley won High Overall in Limited Division shooting his GLOCK 24.

Marking just one year since the birth of Viscussi’s second daughter and her first full season back to competitive shooting after the holidays, Viscussi walks away with a win.  “Shooting Florida Open after taking some time off always makes me a little nervous,” said Viscussi.  “After SHOT Show, I took as much time as I could to focus on accuracy because this match is always so challenging.  During the match, I focused on my training, and it paid off.”  Viscussi competed with the GLOCK 35 and took home the High Lady title win in Limited Division.

Team member Ashley Rheuark won High Lady in Carry Optics Division with the GLOCK 17 Gen5 MOS.  As Rheuark approaches the anniversary of her third year with Team GLOCK, she continues to dominate the competition and is working towards another record season.  “This match is always such a difficult match to start the season with,” said Rheuark.  “It requires such a focus on accuracy and discipline to navigate through all of the challenging stages.”  Rheuark recognized some areas where she plans to focus training for the year but is excited to start the season off with a strong win.

Team GLOCK will meet up again in March for the USPSA Area 6 Championship in Florida.  This will be the first of 8 Area Championships this year.

SAAMI Announces Acceptance of New Cartridge

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute® (SAAMI®), the organization at the forefront of promoting firearm safety by creating standards that ensure safety, reliability and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and components, has announced the acceptance of a new rifle cartridge for SAAMI standardization.

Developed by Wilson Combat, and with the induction into SAAMI sponsored by SIG Sauer, the 300 HAM’R was introduced with a maximum average pressure of 57,500 psi, with a 125-grain bullet traveling at velocity of 2,450 fps and a 130-grain bullet traveling at a velocity of 2,425 fps. Stated ballistics are achieved in a 16-inch MSR-type barrel.

Southeast Missouri State University Anthropologist Partners with Othram for Identification of Human Remains

Human remains recovered in 1979 in Charleston, Missouri, receive renewed attention at Southeast Missouri State University as an invaluable learning tool for today’s advanced approaches to human identification and cold case resolution.

The Woodlands, TX (February 2020) Othram, the leading forensic sequencing laboratory for law enforcement, is working with an anthropologist from Southeast Missouri State Universityto use forensic genealogy to help identify human remains found on a farm in Charleston, Missouri, in 1979.

Associate Professor of Anthropology at Southeast Missouri State University, Jennifer Bengtson, inherited the case when she joined the faculty in 2012. The highly fragmented remains were burned and unidentifiable through traditional testing methods. Bengtson committed herself to establishing an identity for the remains and also wanted to leverage this case as a learning opportunity for her students. She and her students reopened the case and began the process of reanalysis for age, sex, ancestry, and stature. In 2015, the case was entered into NamUs, a national information clearinghouse and resource center for missing, unidentified, and unclaimed persons across the US. In 2016, a bone sample was sent to the University of North Texas for CODIS testing, but with no successful hit to a known identity.

As Bengtson heard more about the growing success of forensic genealogy in solving cold cases, she decided to incorporate these tools into her analysis of this case and educational program.

“The more I started to hear about forensic genealogy in the news, the more I thought these methods could help with this case,” Bengtson commented. “One of the things that I emphasize to my students is that they need to learn to work and communicate with specialists from a variety of disciplines.”

Bengtson started a donation page to raise funding for the project and decided to partner with Othram for Forensic-Grade Genome SequencingTM to reconstruct a genome from the remains. Othram’s forensic genealogy team, led by Anthony and Lee Redgrave, will provide genetic genealogical research support and allow Bengtson’s students to be part of the investigative process.

“We are excited to assist on such a challenging case,” David Mittelman, Othram CEO commented, “our lab specializes in reconstructing genomes from heavily degraded and contaminated evidence.”

Anthony Redgrave, whose doctoral work in Transformative Leadership in Education focuses on forensic genealogy education and training for law enforcement, developed a virtual classroom experience for Bengtson’s students. Bengtson’s students will use the virtual classroom to stay involved in the identification effort. He has also created a depiction of what the deceased may have looked like in life, using digital compositing and painting techniques. Redgrave worked with photos of the deceased’s skull and partial mandible to make the image. “I hope that putting a face to these remains will help the public to connect with the case and possibly even jar someone’s memory about this man,” Redgrave stated. “Forensic art is also very helpful in forensic genealogy cases because having a good depiction of an unidentified individual can be a good clue to researchers.”

Three finalists will be named in each category and all finalists will receive a certificate designating their status. Independent judges will evaluate the submissions based on appearance, functionality for the job, and use of technology and innovation to determine the best overall uniform programs. The goal of the Best Dressed Public Safety Award is to promote professionalism and excellence within the uniform industry. NAUMD is a community for the uniform industry that works on projects to help pursue a common future. Nominations for these categories and the Best Dressed Public Safety Award is open to all public safety departments and all NAUMD members.

The Best Dressed Public Safety Award is one of many awarded during the annual NAUMD Conference and Expo. The 2020 event will be held in Reston, Virginia, April 26 – 28, 2020. During the Conference, NAUMD and its PSSR division hold meetings, exhibit new products, and develop long-lasting distributor and manufacturer relationships through receptions and off-site get-togethers, as well as award excellence during the Awards Reception and Banquet. Membership is open to any manufacturer, distributor, or dealer within the uniform and public safety markets.

Highest performance meets intuitive control

With the new Leica Rangemaster CRF 3500.COM, Leica Sport Optics (Wetzlar, Germany) presents a rangefinder with unparalleled performance up to 3,500 yards (3,200 meters). The Rangemaster CRF 3500.COM is also the first model to feature a powerful class 3R laser. In combination with the specially designed Leica Hunting App and integrated Bluetooth connection, the new Leica Rangemaster offers superior rangefinding and precision as well as intuitive operation.

Long-range shooters can connect the Leica Rangemaster CRF 3500.COM to the “Kestrel Elite” weather meter via Bluetooth, to take wind direction and speed into account when calculating ballistics data. The correction values calculated by the “Kestrel Elite” are sent directly to the Rangemaster. The output values are precisely calculated using “Applied Ballistics” software integrated in the Kestrel. In addition, the information can be transferred to the Apple Watch.

With the Leica Hunting App, developed by Leica especially for the latest generation of rangefinders, individual ballistics settings can be configured conveniently on the smartphone. The app, available free of charge for iOS and Android, lets users select the appropriate calibration for their rifle. Leica’s own ballistics program ABC calculates the individual ballistic output values based on caliber, bullet type, trajectory and weight.

This data is transmitted via Bluetooth to the CRF 3500.COM, which calculates the exact ballistic distance and the breakpoint correction. In calculating the distance, the Rangemaster adjusts for temperature, air pressure and angle. Within fractions of a second, either the linear, equivalent horizontal range (EHR), the holdover, or the number of clicks are calculated and displayed on the riflescope.

Users can create individual ballistics profiles quickly and conveniently via the Leica Hunting App and access their personal settings at any time. Since all ballistics profiles are stored securely and directly in the app, no Internet connection is required for transmission. This guarantees use even in areas where there is no network coverage.

The new Leica Rangemaster CRF 3500.COM offers a generous field of view that allows the target to be detected especially quickly at great distances. Outstanding Leica optics ensure a brilliant, clear, highly detailed image – even at dusk.

The high-quality LED display is equipped with automatic brightness control and adapts to the environment without obscuring the target. The ultra-fast scan mode captures the surroundings every 0.3 seconds and displays decimal values up to a distance of 200 yards (180 meters) – for a precise, safe shot at any distance.
