The Holidays are behind us and I hope you’ve all had a great Holiday Season. Did Santa bring all that you’ve always wanted? I can’t complain, I got a digital trigger pull gauge, fix it sticks and a box of Oliva cigars. The Olivas are not an expensive cigar compared to some of its premium competitors but it consistently receives 4 stars plus ratings from smokers.
This is our first shoot the shit of 2020 so I’ve only got a couple of topics to talk about. For readers unfamiliar with a shoot the shit, I’ll lay that out for you.
A shoot the shit is a social interaction among family, co-workers, friends or teammates during which anything can be discussed, participants need not know anything about the subject being discussed, they are free to use uncensored profanity, insult anyone the wish or change the subject altogether.
There are numerous benefits to shoot the shits. First, it forces participants to stop fingering their iPhone. Secondly, no matter how much of a moron you are, you can say anything you want without supporting your ideas with fact. Lastly, it will save you $150+ per hour, that’s the amount a jackass who studied psychology so they could understand themselves would charge to listen to you. So, with that out of the way I’ll get started.
Let me ruin the movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Disregard whatever Neil Cavuto of Fox News says to you about Star Wars. He’s simply jealous that he lacks a light saber. Suffer Neil!
The picture above says a great deal, essentially the badassery that women are bringing to the big screen. There is not a movie trailer, in the 45 minutes of movie trailers preceding the feature, that does not show a female protagonist kicking ass. Never mind gentility, poise and finesse! So that’s what you can expect for the 2020 action films. But, getting back to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
All of the characters that you’ve come to love: Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Obi One, Yoda are all dead.. All except for Emperor Palpatine, Kylo Ren and Rey (the female Jedi). You all know that Palpatine is a Sith Lord. A Sith draws upon the dark side of the Force to gain power. But, wait there’s more. We also have Kylo Ren, who has taken over for Darth Vader as a dark side of the Force protagonist.
Emperor Palpatine beckons Kylo Ren and asks him to find Rey telling him that she is dangerous and that if he brings her to him she would kill Palpatine and Kylo Ren would then be the supreme leader of the galaxy. Kylo appears to have bought Palpatine’s story but OH NO! He searches the galaxy finding Rey and tells her that Palpatine wants to kill her. She gets pissed and sets out to search for Palpatine but first needs to find one of two stones that point to where Palpatine is hiding. She searches the galaxy and finds the second stone, Kylo Ren has the other.
Throughout the movie, when Rey is asked for her last name, she says that she has no last name, Identifying herself a just Rey. But OH NO!
She finally locates Palpatine’s hideout, and upon her arrival is told by Palpatine that she is his granddaughter. She goes into shock rejecting that idea! In fact, her father was the illegitimate son of Palpatine; as such, she has as much power as Palpatine. In the meantime, somewhere else in the galaxy, Kylo Ren is approached by the spirit of Han Solo who identifies himself as his father and lets him know that Princess Lea is his mother and that she had passed. At this point, Kylo is so moved that he gives up the dark side and goes after Rey to save her.
While Rey is working on killing Palpatine, Kylo arrives and they both try killing Palpatine only to be subdued by massive lighting bolts shooting out from Palpatine’s hands. Kylo and Rey are temporarily incapacitated but something in the Force wakes them up to ultimately kill Palpatine.

No industry is immune to digital disruption… not even ammunition.
Boise, Idaho (December 2019) AmmoSquared Inc. is on a mission to change the way 94 million gun owners think about and manage ammunition by combining the physical world of ammunition with the convenience of online digital management.
According to the company, by starting off digital, ammunition becomes more convenient to purchase, store, exchange, manage, and ultimately, own.
CEO of AmmoSquared Inc, Dan Morton, explained, “Our vision of the future is that every gun owner in America will soon have two forms of ammunition: physical, that they store in their house and take to the range, and digital, which is accumulating in the background, easily exchangeable, and deliverable on demand.”
The company’s existing business model, which was launched in 2015, already offers a unique ammunition subscription service designed to help customers stay stocked up on ammo, but according to Morton, that is just phase one of AmmoSquared’s long term vision.
“Currently customers can purchase ammunition in small amounts via a reoccurring subscription,” Morton continued. “It doesn’t matter whether they are buying one box or one round at a time, it all goes into their digital inventory and accumulates until the customer is ready for delivery. This subscription-based model is just the first phase of our vision.”
AmmoSquared is looking at the future of ammunition and has recently begun raising capital to build a next-generation digital ammunition exchange. Chris Corriveau, CTO of AmmoSquared, added, “Our ultimate goal is to build a true ‘Digital Ammunition Exchange’ where individuals can purchase, store, exchange, and sell ammunition with just a few clicks online. This way, every gun owner has a backup supply of ammunition in a ‘digital’ format that is easily exchangeable and available whenever they need it. Ammunition holders will also be able to trade into, or out of, different calibers in order to take advantage of price changes in the ammunition market.”
Morton and Corriveau predict this will create a market-based leveling mechanism to smooth out the sometimes-dramatic price and availability swings in ammunition that increase during the political election cycle.
To raise capital, the company is issuing Series Seed Preferred Shares to accredited and non-accredited investors through equity crowdfunding portal Wefunder.
“We wanted to give everyone an opportunity to join us and invest in the future of ammunition. Most folks are not accredited investors so it was important to choose an equity crowdfunding platform where anyone with as little as $100 could become a shareholder in AmmoSquared. There are also great gun related perks available for those who can invest $500 or more,” Morton said.
While there are a handful of public companies in the firearms industry such as Sturm, Ruger and Company, American Outdoor Brands, and Olin Corp (Winchester), the ability to invest in a disruptive tech startup in this industry is rare to non-existent – especially for the smaller investor.

Othram’s forensic laboratory produces whole genome from century old remains, enabling the ID of a previously unidentified dismembered body found in the Idaho Civil Defense Caves.
The Woodlands, Texas (December 2019) – Known as the Civil Defense Caves in Dubois, Idaho, the ancient lava tubes, once a valuable resource during the Cold War, have become a family excursion for exploring the easily accessible caves. In August of 1979, one family hunting for arrowheads in the caves, instead turned up a headless, burlap wrapped male torso. Local law enforcement had little to go on except that the torso was found outfitted in a dark red sweater. A little over a decade later, another youngster exploring the same cave came up with more burlap wrapped remains: two arms and two legs. Law enforcement brought in volunteers to search for a key component to the mystery, the head. Unfortunately, it was not found, and the case eventually went cold.
The remains, which became known as the Buffalo Cave Torso, were examined by the FBI’s elite forensic team with no resulting identification, and also examined at the Smithsonian, again without an identification being made. The case was eventually turned over to Idaho State University’s anthropological researchers in cooperation with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Dr. Amy Michael, at the University of New Hampshire and formerly of ISU, and Dr. Samantha Blatt at ISU reached out to Anthony Redgrave for help. Redgrave is a team leader at the DNA Doe Project and the lead forensic genealogist at Othram. With funding assistance from the DNA Doe Project, work began to see if DNA testing could reveal the identity of these remains.
Othram’s laboratory digitized the degraded remains from this case using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing™. Once the genetic data was generated, Redgrave and his team took over building a genetic genealogical tree and what happened next was a surprise to everyone.
The Buffalo Cave Torso was not forty or so years old. It was an incredible 103 years old. In a press conference held on December 31, 2019 at the Clark County Community Center in Dubois, Idaho, the Clark County Sheriff’s office announced the identity of the victim and expressed thanks to the team for enabling a positive identification.
“We can now confidently say that the torso found in the Civil Caves in 1979 belonged to Joseph Henry Loveless, born in Utah Territory in 1870,” Anthony Redgrave commented. “This is one of the oldest cases solved using autosomal DNA. We solved the case in about three and a half months after getting the DNA information back from the lab.”
“Henry” Loveless, born in 1870, and murdered in 1916, was a known bootlegger and counterfeiter. He had many encounters with the law and went by a number of aliases, including Walter Currans/Cairins, Cairns and Charles Smith. In May of 1916, he took an axe to his wife, Agnes Octavia Caldwell and fled, wearing a maroon sweater under overalls. Having escaped jail numerous times with a saw kept secretly in his shoe, he eventually befell a grisly fate, not unlike that which he inflicted on his wife, in the depths of the Civil Defense Caves of Idaho.

This will also be my last shoot the shit for 2019. Remember that a shoot the shit is a social interaction in which participants don’t need to know anything about the subject being discussed, they are free to make unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. Shoot the shits accomplish two important things, for a moment they separate you from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram allowing you to have human interaction; lastly, it will keep you from paying $150+ per hour to a jackass who studied psychology so they could understand themselves. Can you imagine sitting in front of someone like Dr. Christine Blasey Ford to explain why you like chicks in thongs. OK here we go.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to fire the Russian Dragunov SVD. If you’re not familiar with the SVD it’s the standard issue Designated Marksman and Sniper Rifle, chambered in the 7.62X54R cartridge. It’s a great damned rifle and I’d love to own one but at $10,000 + per copy I’ll have to be satisfied with just looking at one.
Anyway, Russian military units will soon surrender their Dragunov SVDs for the new Chukavin SVCh. The new DMR / Sniper rifle is manufactured by the Kalashnikov Group and was introduce at Russia’s 2017 Army Exhibition. The Spetsnaz and some of the other special Russian units have been using the new rifle and contributing to perfecting the design. The Russian government plans to rollout the new rifle for export and general military use 2020 – 2021.
The SVCh is chambered in 7.62x54R, 7.62×51 and the 338 Lapua Magnum, so take your choice. The rifle is fed from a Dragunov SVD 10-round box magazine, has an overall length of 1,000 mm, a barrel length of 410 mm, a weight of 4.3 kg (with empty magazine) and an accuracy of no more than 1 MOA at 100m. The barrel can be replaced with a longer versions of 460 mm or 565 mm as desired. The SVCh in 7.62×51 mm has the same specifications and is fed from a 20-round box magazine.
Some of the more interesting features, at least to me, are the full length Picatinny rail, AR style ambidextrous safety selector, the generous use of M-LOK attachment points along the handguard. Other features worthy of mention are the folding stock adjustable for length of pull and cheek height . So, this is no rehash of the AK or Cold War Dragunov.
The rifle’s operating system is a gas-operated short-stroke piston with rotating bolt that’s fitted with a manual gas regulator.
Kalashnikov Group feels that their Chukavin:
“meets the requirements to the best world`s DMRs, for instance, the M110 SASS (Semi-Automatic Sniper System) by the US Knight Armament Company (KAC) in terms of dimensions, magazine capacity and accuracy.”
I’ve shot the KAC M110 SASS and it is an extremely accurate rifle, so Kalashnikov’s claim is worthy of a side by side comparison. We’ll see…

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the firearms industry trade association, is honoring the nation’s fallen law enforcement officers by contributing $25,000 to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Foundation. The donation was delivered to FOP National President Patrick Yoes at NSSF’s Washington D.C. office.
“The firearms industry proudly stands law enforcement and the brave men and women in blue across this great nation who every day don the uniform and uphold their oaths by putting their lives on the line to serve and protect our citizens,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Public Affairs and General Counsel. “Our industry is intrinsically tied to our police officers and for many like myself those roots run deep. As a former prosecutor and son of a New York City policeman, I am deeply grateful to represent our industry’s contribution to this worthy cause.”
The ongoing professional relationship between law enforcement and NSSF members extends well beyond the purchasing of firearms, ammunition and related products. NSSF enjoys longstanding relationships with law enforcement agencies to bring Real SolutionsSM that make communities safer. This partnership addresses the criminal misuse of firearms and the responsible ownership and storage of firearms.
The firearms industry, through NSSF’s partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, administers the straw-purchase prevention campaign “Don’t Lie for the Other GuyTM”, that has both retailer education and public awareness components to educate federal firearms licensees of the warning signs of someone attempting to purchase a firearm for someone who may be prohibited from possessing firearms and educating the public of the consequences of a $250,000 fine and 10-year prison sentence for committing the felony crime of lying on the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) form. NSSF and the ATF extend this partnership through Operation Secure Store® that educates firearms retailers on measures they can take to prevent the theft and burglary of firearms. One particular component of that program NSSF’s commitment to matching rewards ATF rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in thefts from firearms retailers.
Project ChildSafe® supplies police departments with firearm safety kits for distribution in their communities. More than 38 million kits, which include a free firearm lock, have been handed out through 15,000 law enforcement organizations. Most recently, NSSF brought this effort to Texas at the request of Gov. Greg Abbott to distribute more than a half-million locks through with the assistance of a state grant of $1 million.
Firearms manufacturers have long recognized the importance of giving back to the law enforcement community — a community that is an important and growing segment of the firearms industry market. The law enforcement segment of the NSSF-owned and sponsored Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) ShowSM represents 28 percent of the show’s floor space at nearly 180,000 square feet. If the segment were broken out as a stand-alone show, it would be the largest law enforcement show in the country.

The safety is ambidextrous and the slide features large serrations for a positive grip and ease of operation. The pistol is also finished in a special two-toned ceramic coating for greater resistance to wear and corrosion.
