Put FMJs In Their Place
The shooting sports run on a steady diet of full metal jacket handgun ammunition. Ranges soak up countless millions of FMJ rounds as shooters of all stripes train, plink and compete—and it’s not hard to see why. FMJs are accurate, affordable and widely available in virtually every cartridge and bullet weight.
The problem is that those same traits tempt some shooters to use FMJ ammunition for concealed carry. And that’s a mistake. Only expanding bullets specifically designed for self-defense should ever be used, and the consequences can be deadly.
Terminal Performance
At its core, carry ammunition needs to quickly stop an attacker, which requires the bullet to reach and destroy vital organs and as much tissue as possible in route. An expanding bullet does this by creating a larger wound cavity than the original bullet diameter.
An FMJ round, however, doesn’t expand at all, creating an extremely small wound channel, causing minimal tissue damage, and transferring little of its energy in the process—and handgun bullets already carry almost no energy compared to their rifle counterparts.
Collateral Risks
That leads to the second point: over-penetration. Since an FMJ bullet doesn’t expand and retains most of its energy as it passes through a target, it penetrates far beyond what’s needed for effective self-defense. This poses a serious threat to bystanders—even those in adjacent rooms or outside exterior walls.
Specially designed ammunition like Federal Premium Personal Defense HST, Hydra-Shok Deep and Punch are ideal choices for these life-and-death encounters. Not only do all of these bullets expand aggressively to stop an assailant, they are calibrated to penetrate deep enough to stop any threat while posing less of a risk to others nearby.
It’s why FMJ only belongs at the range.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – June 4, 2020 – Blackhawk, a leader in law enforcement and military products for over 20 years, announced today that it has expanded its popular line of T-Series holsters with the introduction of a light bearing Level 2 Compact (L2C) version engineered specifically for the SIG SAUER P320 pistol with TLR 7/8 light.
As with other L2C holsters, the latest model retains key features designed to assist with concealed carry. Among these features include a new speed cut to assist with a faster draw, a low-profile design for ease of concealment and RMR-compatibility.
Designed to follow Blackhawk’s Master Grip Principle, all T-Series holsters have been specifically developed to allow the user’s hand to land naturally where it should in order to deploy the sidearm. This efficient movement pairs with a sound-dampening, low-friction, dual-density internal material that translates into a smooth, quiet draw. Externally, the L2C holster features a proprietary, glass-reinforced nylon to ensure the highest degree of durability available in a duty rated holster.
All T-Series L2C holsters include an all-new attachment platform called the Quick Dual Release, or QDR. This attachment method features an intuitive dual button release that allows for easy attachment to and removal from a belt without weaving it through traditional belt loops. The QDR can easily accommodate belts ranging in size from 1.5 to 2.25 inches and allows the holster to be canted at various angles, depending on user preference.
All L2C holsters also come standard with a two-slot belt loop attachment for belt carry and the intuitive design provides the user the ability to cant the sidearm following the body’s contour.

Hatsan’s Versatile Tactical Shotgun (VTS) line of Escort Shotguns
Bentonville, AR (June 3, 2020) – New for 2020, Hatsan is introducing its Versatile Tactical Shotgun (VTS) line of Escort shotguns. There are both conventional and bullpup configurations to suit all needs. The VTS series utilizes familiar controls and features found on the ever-popular modern sporting rifle. These similarities make transitioning from rifle to shotgun easier than ever before. Capable of firing both 2 ¾” and 3″ shells interchangeably, these shotguns are well-suited for a wide variety of applications.
The Escort DF12 is the premiere VTS series model, with both upper and lower receivers as well as the vented handguard crafted from tough aluminum alloy. It is available in both all-black and FDE Cerakote. It is available exclusively in 12-gauge. A hybrid aluminum/synthetic variant, the SDX, is also available and comes in both 12ga and .410cal. Its advanced polymer lower receiver features alloy guides inside the mag well that maintain its strength and ensure smooth, consistent magazine function. The ThermoDefend forend protects shooters’ hands from the heat generated during extended operation. One of the benefits to the VTS’ gas system is that a bullpup variant can be created that is just as tough and reliable as its counterparts. The BTS bullpup is also available in 12ga and .410cal, and is 9 inches shorter, making it easier to maneuver in tight environments.
The gas operated semi-automatic platform features a new gas piston design that is simpler and more compact than other shotgun systems. The piston floats around the barrel itself, not a secondary tube placed below the barrel. This improves efficiency and decreases the overall size and weight of the gun, making it more user-friendly. The in-line gas system also helps reduce muzzle rise, improving the speed at which follow-up shots can be taken. The standard models feature a buffer tube that houses the recoil spring and provides a mounting location for the shoulder stock.
The VTS series shotguns feature upper and lower receiver assemblies that are easily separable via two quick takedown pins. This provides access for cleaning and maintenance. The handguard is also easy to remove by unscrewing the barrel cover and sliding it off the gun, providing direct access to the gas operating system and making cleaning simple and quick.
Picatinny rails are featured both along the top of the receiver and on the handguard, allowing plenty of mounting options for sights, optics, and accessories. The ergonomic, soft rubber pistol grip is removable from the lower receiver and can be replaced with one of many already-available modular rifle platform grips. The carbine models’ buffer tube mounted stock features an elevation adjustable cheek rest for easy sight alignment and a soft rubber butt pad to absorb recoil. It can be removed and replaced with other commercially available fixed buttstocks to accommodate varying preferences.
The 12-gauge models feature an internally threaded barrel for interchangeable choke tubes. Each gun ships with a cylinder bore choke brake that can be used with both slugs and shot and helps tame recoil. Also included are a standard Full and Improved Cylinder chokes, with other options available. The adaptability of the VTS series ushers in a new era of sporting shotgun – offering a single platform that can perform multiple tasks.

Mike Harvey, a Texan through and through, grew up with a passion for historic firearms. Even as a youth, Mike took his passion and built a Hawken rifle that he still uses for hunting. In 1979, he opened his first retail store in Houston called “Bigfoot” after one of Mike’s heroes, Bigfoot Wallace, a Texas Ranger. During this time, Mike bought and sold guns, and hung onto those firearms with a unique heritage. That became the collection from which he would eventually produce the Cimarron line of old west replica firearms. Bigfoot became a distributor for Western Arms Company, importers of Uberti cowboy-style firearms. Eventually, Mike bought out Western Arms and when searching for a name for his new company leaned on the advice of then Guns & Ammo editor, Phil Spangenberger (True West firearms editor). Phil thought that nothing says “West” like the word “Cimarron” and the company, Cimarron Firearms was born.
In the first video of the new series, Mike introduces a carbine close to his heart, the ’59 McNelly Sharps Carbine. The original Sharps carbines were black powder but converted to a 50/70 cartridge and reissued to the military. The carbine Mike introduces is #6 of 36 carbines issued to one of Texas Ranger Captain Leander H. McNelly’s loyal Rangers, known as “Little McNelly’s.” McNelly’s history resonates with many Texans in his somewhat ruthless, but highly effective, methods of cleaning up cattle rustlers and bandits that proliferated at the Texas/Mexican border around the Rio Grande in Nueces County.
Mike’s good friend owned #6, a family heirloom passed down from one of the original McNelly’s and a close friend of Sam Houston. This carbine was used by Cimarron as the source for creating Cimarron’s Sharps McNelly® Carbine rifle in 45/70 with a 22” round barrel. Cimarron’s replica stays true to the original, now owned by Mike Harvey. It features a case colored receiver and a blued steel barrel on American black walnut stock and foreend, just like the original Texas Ranger carbines. The guns are also marked with the “T * S” found on the original 36 carbines. Cimarron’s reproductions, side-by-side, are very historical in appearance and function and maintain that high level of individual craftsmanship rarely found in today’s firearms production. Cimarron reproductions may look great on the wall, but they are built to perform in the field, just as their predecessors did. The Sharps McNelly carbine is a superb hunting rifle capable of superior accuracy out over 150 yards. The Cimarron version is available for an MSRP of $1,387.10.

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – June 2, 2020 – Bushnell congratulates Pro Shooter Mark Cooper for adding a new footnote in the Precision Rifle Series history book by becoming the first person in recent history to win the Tactical Division and place 2nd Overall at a National PRS Match. Using his Elite Tactical XRS II, Cooper was able to take home multiple wins at the recent K&M Precision Rifle Series and AG Cup Qualifier in Finger, Tennessee.
After dropping only 8 points across 12 stages on day one, Cooper entered the final day of the match in 20th place. Despite exceeding his initial expectations, Cooper knew that an even stronger performance would be needed to claim a top spot on the podium. He remained confident that his riflescope and gear could help get the job done.
“It might sound simple, but I went into the last day with one goal in mind – don’t miss,” said Cooper. “Throughout the match my XRS II was performing great, giving me crystal-clear views and helping deliver precise shots across a wide variety of distances. I knew that if I could stay focused that I was in a good position to have a strong finish.”
At the end of Sunday, Cooper had dropped only 4 points, bringing his grand total to 12 for the match. Once the last stage was completed, Cooper’s entire squad erupted with excitement, realizing what they had just witnessed. Cooper had ended the match with two wins, and a mere one point away from 1st Place Overall.

Over the last five years, RCBS has continued its support of youth shooting sports education programs by dedicating a portion of the proceeds from every RCBS Explorer and Explorer Plus Reloading Kits to the National 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Summer Scouting with Styrka Optics
Eagan, MN (June 2, 2020) – In these high-tech times of ours, summer scouting in preparation for our fall hunts often starts online. Digital maps and similar resources help us find public hunting areas and guides us to other options. If we already have access to specific lands or properties, many of us will have game cameras in place.
Both are great ways to start gathering information for the fall. When we really want to know what’s on the land, we need to be on the land. And Styrka optics can help tremendously with this in-the-field scouting.
If we don’t know the land or property, we need to at least walk the edges of it to acquaint ourselves. But what does a hunter do once that’s done? Think, distance scouting.
Hunters want to observe but not be observed or smelled. There’s no better way to accomplish this than to set up at various observation points and scan from afar with a pair of Styrka binoculars or our S7 Series Spotting Scopes.
Of course, hunters are looking for the obvious–wild game animals, where they appear and at what times of the day. Also, search out trails they use and openings between wooded areas where they cross-note sources of water and food, especially crops.
Before setting up hunting blinds, pay attention to the prevailing winds, too, and plan the blind locations to take advantage of these winds.
What happens if the area has been hunted before? Don’t assume the deer will just be there. White-tailed deer, for example, are known to get into feeding and bedding routines. However, human disturbances and changes to vegetation from year to year can have these same deer altering their travel, bedding and feeding patterns.
If hunters know these routines from past hunts, spend some time confirming them-or discovering the changes.

PSR vs. CAL Atlas Bipod Comparison
Both are bipods with two legs used to support firearms, BUT each for different applications. Our bipods are certainly all bipods, but they too have different characteristics that warrant a little thought prior to selecting the right tool for the job.
Our full featured V8, PSR, and 5-H all have the ability to both Pan and Cant, while the CAL series, including the new Super CAL will only cant.
Panning is a great feature where flexibility and the ability to move on a target or load then pan to a target is necessary. Most likely encountered in urban environment or uneven terrain. Those shooting at longer distances at a static target don’t typically require the ability to Pan, so the CAL series that “Cants And Locs” will likely make more sense.

NDIA approves of House changes to small-business pandemic aid program
ARLINGTON, VA – The National Defense Industrial Association issues this statement regarding the House of Representatives passing Thursday the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act of 2020:
NDIA applauds the House passing the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act. This legislation improves the program and gives businesses more options during these unique times. These include eliminating the two-year loan repayment restrictions, extending the forgiveness period beyond eight weeks, adjusting the 75%-to-payroll requirement and ensuring access to payroll tax deferment for businesses that take Paycheck Protection Program loans. All of these will help small businesses stay afloat and recover.
While there are many additional items needed to protect our warfighters, including a National Defense Authorization Act, NDIA is pleased with this bipartisan work and looks forward to both sides of the aisle bringing up and supporting future pieces of legislation.
