SIMI VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 10, 2020 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), a global leader in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), today announced the introduction of its Extended Range Antenna (ERA), the latest addition to AeroVironment’s growing line of network connectivity solutions. The ERA is a lightweight, portable antenna array kit designed to integrate seamlessly with AeroVironment’s standard RF head antenna to support a diverse range of missions.

The ERA add-on kit narrows the antenna beam width, extending the command and control range up to 40 kilometers (24.9 miles) with minimal impact to its size, weight and power (SWAP) footprint. Similar to the standard RF head antenna, the ERA is manually positioned. The included RF Unit switch allows users to toggle between omnidirectional mode, for short-range operations, and extended range mode, for longer-range operations. The ERA supports both M1/2/5 and M3/4/6 Digital Data Link (DDL) operating bands.

By adding the ERA kit to their existing AeroVironment RF antenna, UAS flight operators can immediately expand their operational capabilities, gaining actionable battlefield intelligence at greater stand-off range to maximize their stealth and safety. When used in combination with other AeroVironment network connectivity options, the ERA provides an enhanced level of operational flexibility. This enables teams to coordinate command and control transfer of UAS, such as Puma LE, easily over greater distances, maximizing the aircraft’s multi-mission capabilities, in day or night operations, across dynamically changing environments.

NEWTOWN, Conn. – NSSF®, the trade association for the firearm industry is pleased to announce that it has awarded its highest Five-Star rating for range excellence to Midwest Shooting Center of Cridersville, Ohio.

Located less than 10 miles from the busy city of Lima and not far from the Indiana state line, this expansive indoor range boasts a number of top-end amenities, not the least of which are its 24 shooting positions that include 10 static-target 25-yard lanes, 10 dynamic target 25-yard lanes reserved for member use and four 100-yard lanes. The 100-yard range can handle up to .50-caliber and is immensely popular with patrons renting from a variety of specialty firearms, including a selection of suppressed and full-autos. Another big draw is Midwest’s four live-fire gaming systems that give customers a highly interactive and exciting shooting experience, while a smartly curated retail center sees constant and regular traffic from area target shooters and competitors.

SPANISH INDUSTRY ACHIEVES FULL INCORPORATION INTO PHASE 1A OF THE NGWS/FCAS PROGRAM

· The work and determination of the Ministry of Defence have been key to Spain’s role in a project which is set to constitute a true technological revolution

Madrid, December 10, 2020.- The DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armament), acting on behalf of the governments of Spain, Germany and France, has formalized the contractual amendment permitting Spanish industry’s full integration into Phase 1A Technology Demonstrators activities of the NGWS/FCAS project, which was initially launched by France and Germany on February 20, 2020.

A few weeks earlier the DGA had formalized another contractual amendment to incorporate the activities of the Sensors Pillar into this Phase 1A contract, as they didn’t form part of the initial launch.

With these two modifications for Phase 1A, the industrial leaders appointed in Spain by the Ministry of Defence are integrated in the following manner, with Indra as the national coordinator:

· In the Next Generation Fighter Pillar, led by Dassault Aviation, Airbus D&S SAU is the Main Partner alongside Airbus D&S GmbH.

· In the Engine Pillar, Safran Aircraft Engines is the Main Contractor, with ITP Aero and MTU Aero Engines as the Main Partners.

· In the Remote Carriers Pillar, led by Airbus D&S GmbH, SATNUS (a consortium comprising GMV, SENER Aeroespacial and TECNOBIT) is the Main Partner alongside MBDA.

· In the System of Systems/Combat Cloud Pillar, led by Airbus D&S GmbH, Indra is the Main Partner alongside Thales.

· In the JIPC/SIMLAB (Joint Inter-pillar Consistency/Simulation Laboratory) Pillar, Indra is a Co-Contractor alongside Dassault and Airbus D&S GmbH.

· In the Sensors Pillar, Indra is the Main Contractor, with Thales and the German FCMS as the Main Partners.

· In the ELOT (Low Observable Technologies) Pillar, Airbus D&S SAU is the Main Contractor, with Dassault and Airbus D&S GmbH as the Main Partners.

This achievement comes after, in June this year, Spanish industry joined the JCS (Joint Concept Study) launched by France and Germany in February 2019. The contract positions Indra as a co-contractor together with Dassault and Airbus GmbH and Airbus SAU as the technical manager of a large number of the work packages.

Spain will thus reach cruising speed and join France and Germany in all the activities. Our country will maintain a position of equality with respect to its partners in all the decisions reached during the program, ensuring its participation in the tasks with the highest value.

For several months, Spanish industry has been working with a close eye on phases 1B and 2, which will extend the project until 2027. The negotiations are progressing at a good pace within a climate of cooperation between all its partners with the aim of ensuring that the project is a European success story.

The Ministry of Defence’s commitment and its determination to turn the NGWS/FCAS into a State Project constitutes a turning point for Spanish industry, which will take part in the initial stages of the development and demonstration of new technologies onwards, subsequently allowing the design, development and production of what is set to be the most ambitious defence program ever launched on the continent by 2040.

It is a strategic project that will represent a true technological revolution and enable our industries to compete with other European companies on equal terms. It opens up a stage of intensive research and development work on next-generation technologies of a dual (civil and military) nature that will determine Spain’s future. It’s also a project that will require the participation of companies and research centers throughout Spain.

KMW renews Dutch FENNEK fleet

Munich/The Hague, December 2020 – Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and the Dutch procurement agency DMO (Defence Materiel Organisation) have signed a contract for the upgrading of 322 FENNEK vehicles. The MLU (Mid Life Update) order has a volume of over EUR 300 million and includes among others the integration of new observation and reconnaissance systems (BAA II NDL) and the integration of the C4I command and control system. The work is to be carried out at KMW in Germany as well as in the Netherlands, at the partner companies Van Halteren Defence and Nedinsco in cooperation with the army’s Material Stock Logistic Command (MatLogCo).
Delivery of the upgraded FENNEK systems will begin in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2027.
The FENNEK is a binational project between Germany and the Netherlands. There are other variants in addition to the FENNEK recon vehicles, ranging from an engineering vehicle to an anti-tank version and even one for high-mobility anti-aircraft defence. What they all have in common is a high off-road ability thanks to the special drive concept and robust chassis design.

NSSF Launches PSAs on Storing Firearms Securely in Vehicles

New informational videos offer important safety considerations to help responsible gun owners prevent theft and unauthorized access

Preventing Thefts of Firearms From Vehicles

NEWTOWN, Conn. – In two new video public service announcements, the National Shooting Sports Foundation® encourages gun owners to securely store their firearms when temporarily leaving them in vehicles.

Thefts of firearms from vehicles have risen in many parts of the country, but storing firearms securely and out of sight can help thwart thieves. NSSF® reminds gun owners that vehicle door locks, as well as the trunk or glove compartment, are vulnerable to entry—whereas a dedicated safe or lock box offers better protection of your firearm by presenting a more difficult, time-consuming challenge for thieves.

“No one wants their gun stolen from their vehicle and to live with the thought that it could be used in a crime,” said NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi. “If you must temporarily leave your firearm in a vehicle, we encourage you to use a secure storage device to keep it hidden from prying eyes and inaccessible to thieves. The new PSAs show the many storage devices available for use in vehicles, including custom models designed to fit into consoles and other places in your car.”

If you must temporarily store a gun in your car or truck, for your safety and that of your community, we encourage you to take steps to properly store them. Use a secure storage device, keep it out of sight, try not to be away from the vehicle for an extended length of time and, when you arrive home, take the firearm inside with you to your secure home storage area.

Long-Range Shooters Need a Ballistic Shooting App

Gainesville, GA (December 7, 2020) Considering all the money long-range shooters and hunters spend on rifles, optics and ammunition, adding a free shooting app to the mix might seem pretty unnecessary.

It’s the exact opposite.

As professional shooters know, a proven, ultra-high-tech shooting app like Ballistic is a huge assist in making precision shots, no matter the terrain, the weather or the distances. And Ballistic, the #1 long-range shooting app, can very well be the difference between the trophy hunt of a lifetime, a trip to the winner’s table or a huge disappointment.

No matter how expensive or precision-engineered the rifle or optic, for example, a long-range hunter or shooter can’t control the weather or its impact on their projectile. Wind, changing temperatures and fluctuating barometric pressures can and will impact the flight of a bullet. With Ballistic, all a shooter needs to do is  update the current environmental inputs, including wind speed and directions, and Ballistic will automatically adjust the needed hold over points within the Bullet Profile.

With Ballistic, shooters and hunters can input wind speed and direction in a manner of ways. Angle inputs (e.g., 90° = crosswind left to right) are possible for the wind direction or the o’clock format (e.g., 3:00 will automatically translate to 90°) can be used, too. Headwinds can be added in, also, and Ballistic will automatically adjust velocity to account for the headwind calculation.

On a hunt or during a competition, shooters will find themselves facing changing terrain. For instance, the elevation is a very important factor in precision shooting, as more than a few shooters have discovered a little too late. A common situation has the shooter zeroing their rifle at one elevation and then doing a competition or hunt at a much different elevation. A few thousand feet in elevation difference can alter a bullet’s point of impact by several inches  and sometimes much more, depending on the environmental conditions.

Again, inputting the current elevation into Ballistic will automatically adjust for the changes in holdover points.

For the long-range hunter, nothing is more important than taking an ethical shot. With Ballistic,  there’s no need to guess at how high to hold over the animal. Ballistic puts the hunter’s point of aim right on target, time and again, and does it in the field where it really counts.

  • Suicide prevention, including learning about how employees and owners can have brave conversations with customers who are exhibiting concerning behaviors, and
  • Suicide postvention about what to expect and how to respond if the worst does happen.

Dr. Doreen Marshall, Vice President of Mission Engagement for AFSP, serves as subject-matter expert on suicide and prevention. Dr. Marshall discusses warning signs, risk factors and how to have a brave conversation with someone you believe is struggling, among other topics.

AFSP estimates that 54 percent of Americans have been affected by suicide. Dr. Marshall notes that the material covered in the modules can help business professionals not only in their roles at work but in their personal lives as well. Recognizing that suicide accounts for 60 percent of all firearm-related deaths, NSSF partnered with AFSP several years ago to work cooperatively to deliver educational resources to industry and the gun-owning community to help reduce that number.

“These new e-learning modules expand NSSF’s considerable efforts to help reduce the rate of suicide by firearm,” said NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi. “Whether it’s a customer, co-worker or family member, you may be able to help save a life by learning more about suicide and prevention. We encourage industry members to take advantage of this educational resource, and we thank our partner, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, for helping NSSF develop this valuable tool.”
