SCI Supports Congress’ Decision to Remove Section 436 from the 2022 Appropriations Package
![]()

Washington, D.C. (March 11, 2022) – Thanks to strong and consistent opposition from Safari Club International (SCI), members of Congress, and African wildlife officials, the 2022 appropriations package has successfully passed through the legislative process without Section 436 included, which would have banned the importation into the U.S of sport-hunted elephants or lions from Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
Now, this finalized legislation is headed to President Biden’s desk for signature. Until today, the bill was still pending before the Senate, so its final language was not assured. SCI refrained from reporting this victory until all steps of the process played out since every step represented a possibility that the bill would see more changes or be derailed entirely.
Had the Section 436 language remained in the bill as the anti-hunting activists wanted, this provision would have kneecapped hunting incentives in southern Africa. That in turn would have significantly reduced funding for conservation projects, biodiversity enhancement initiatives, and habitat protection in the region. Some of the world’s largest populations of lions and elephants that inhabit that part of the continent would have been more vulnerable to poachers, unemployment, and deadly human-wildlife conflicts as a result.
Leading up to the decision in Congress to strip this anti-hunting language, SCI members and our supporters made our voices heard in the halls of Congress by:
· Generating 2,199 individual letters from advocates to their members of Congress, urging them to oppose Section 436.
· Sending a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader McCarthy from SCI and 21 other hunting organizations, detailing strong opposition to Section 436 for blatantly ignoring the conservation benefits of well-regulated international hunting.
· Working with Representative Jeff Duncan of South Carolina to introduce an amendment to strike Section 436 from the funding bill, which SCI also called on all members of Congress to support.
The voices and contributions of Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Richard Shelby (R-AL) were especially important as they spearheaded efforts to remove this harmful language from the bill. Their dedication to protecting America’s hunting heritage has not gone unnoticed by SCI and our members, and we congratulate them on their successful leadership.
African government and community representatives also played a distinguished role in the campaign to strike this anti-conservation language by testifying in front of the House of Representatives and directly contacting lawmakers’ offices. Notably, Ambassadors of nations within the Southern African Development Community, Ambassador Tadeous Tafipenyika Chifamba of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and Ambassador Lazarous Kapambwe of the Republic of Zambia sent a letter directly to Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy voicing their concern about the damages an import ban would have on their respective countries and the region writ large.
“I’d like to speak on behalf of SCI members, our friends across Southern Africa, and hunters the world over when I say that we are thrilled with Congress’ decision to eliminate Section 436’s anti-hunting language from the appropriations package. There are still many fights on the horizon that are equally important in protecting African wildlife conservation and the global freedom to hunt, but today we should acknowledge and celebrate the difference hunters can make when we work together to achieve a common goal,” said SCI CEO Laird Hamberlin. Situational awareness (SA) through secure data transmission
Recognizing and recording environmental conditions and situational snapshots – and translating them into actions – can reduce risks for personnel, machines, and infrastructure. In many areas, security forces need to operate efficiently and require information about their surroundings. At the same time, they must use this information to plan and adjust their actions accordingly. For example, information on the location of friendly and enemy forces can be made available.
Big Data and complex networked systems
The advent of artificial intelligence, Big Data, and cross-platform, complex networked systems has made highly technical expertise mandatory. Interfaces must be developed to match the respective applications. For example, optronic systems enable vehicle crews to communicate using a wide range of visual information. Acoustic sensor systems help to localize threats by identifying ballistic missiles, warning personnel, and providing information on the direction and distance of the projectile’s source. Ideally, these sensor systems are coupled with an Active Protection System, which protect crews by disrupting the approaching projectile in such a way that the intended effect on target is severely impaired.
Situational awareness technologies support fast and well-founded decision-making. A central node (a forward operating base or FOB) bundles the acquired information and outputs real-time data to the deployed units via cables, antennas, and glass fibers. All these systems are united by the need for highly robust, reliable, application-specific connector systems and cable assemblies for the transmission of mission-critical (RF) signals and data.
Robust, application-specific connector systems
ODU connectors for military, security, and communication applications provide a high level of signal integrity thanks to 360° shielding. Different transfer protocols (USB/HDMI/Displayport) ensure high-speed data transmissions that are also protected against access by third parties and standard interfaces. Pin-and-groove coding and color coding provide extra support in extreme situations and prevent incorrect mating. Even in the smallest installation space, different transmission variants can be individually configured. The rugged ODU housings are waterproof up to IP6K9K, non-reflective, and available with various connection types and locking mechanisms.
Robust under high loads and extreme temperatures, resistant to dust, water and vibration. Optimized for demanding applications due to high resilience and transmission reliability even under the most technically challenging environmental conditions.
ODU Group: global representation with perfect connections
The ODU Group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of connector systems, employing 2,500 people around the world. In addition to its company headquarters in Muehldorf a. Inn (Germany), ODU also has an international distribution network and production sites in Sibiu/Romania, Shanghai/China, and Tijuana/Mexico. ODU combines all relevant areas of expertise and key technologies including design and development, machine tooling and special machine construction, injection, stamping, turning, surface technology, assembly and cable assembly. The ODU Group sells its products globally through its sales offices in China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Romania, Sweden, UK and the US, as well as through numerous international sales partners. ODU connectors ensure a reliable transmission of power, signals, data and media for a variety of demanding applications including medical technology, military and security, automotive, industrial electronics, and test and measurement.

Howard Leight Continues Support of First Shots
NSSF First Shots Program increases safe participation in the shooting sports while creating new customers for shooting ranges
CANTON, MA (March 9, 2022) – Honeywell Howard Leight, a leading provider of diverse hearing- and eye-protection products for shooting sports enthusiasts, remains committed to expanding responsible participation in the shooting sports. Its ongoing partnership with the NSSF’s First Shots program is a primary example of this commitment.
First Shots has helped shooting ranges across the country introduce thousands of individuals to shooting and firearm safety since its inception in 2005. Developed by the NSSF and hosted by shooting ranges, the program provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to shooting by qualified range operators and instructors that includes firearm safety, local ownership requirements, shooting fundamentals, hands-on instruction, and how and where to continue. Howard Leight has supported the program since 2018 by donating hearing and eye-protection to the thousands of promotional packages NSSF provides to all First Shots participants at host ranges across the United States.
“Howard Leight shares the NSSF’s goal of expanding participation in recreational shooting in a responsible manner, which includes establishing safety as a priority, and by reinforcing it during every step of instruction,” says Howard Leight National Sales Manager, Chris Leight, emphasizing that first-time shooters need to have a positive experience in order to develop into target-shooting enthusiasts. “That’s why Howard Leight is such a passionate First Shots partner,” Leight continues. “Hearing and eye protection are integral to safe shooting, and that’s at the core of the training First Shots participants receive. Our quality Howard Leight products protect First Shots participants’ vision and hearing, while adding to the overall comfort and enjoyment they feel during their initial experiences in the shooting sports.”
“We are thrilled to have Howard Leight as an ongoing partner in our First Shots program,” said Zach Snow, NSSF Director, Member Development. “Safety in shooting sports is the core of our training, and thanks to Howard Leight by Honeywell, participants learn how they can protect themselves and make safety a habit from the very start.”
The NSSF First Shots program recognizes that the biggest challenge for new shooters is simply getting started. First Shots eases that challenge by providing basic safety instruction and a fun, memorable introduction to target shooting on the range. According to the NSSF, more than 43% of First Shots participants become target-shooting enthusiasts who individually spend on average more than $600 annually on their shooting sports endeavors. “Ranges of all types and sizes should consider hosting First Shots as an avenue to capture these new customers,” says Snow, adding that events can focus on an introduction to handguns, rifles or shotguns. “As a First Shots Host Range, you’ll have access to shooting supplies (ammunition, targets, eye and ear protection), marketing support, course curriculum and training guides, and a unique new customer reward program to encourage your first-time customers to become repeat visitors.”

GATORZ Eyewear Introduces OPz Lenses
Optimized Polarized (OPz) for Digital Devices
Carlsbad, CA – (March 2022) – GATORZ Eyewear has changed the game in polarized eyewear, introducing the Optimized Polarized (OPz) Lens for digital devices.
Launching its OPz Lens, GATORZ is changing the way we interact with our digital displays while we are outdoors. The common problem that one has with polarized eyewear, like the lack of full visibility when using digital screens outdoors, is no longer an issue with the OPz lens.
Most all LCD screens that we use while we are outdoors already feature a polarized-filtered screen to reduce the glare that you receive while outside. When you wear standard polarized lenses and look at a polarized filter in a screen, they essentially cancel each other out, and the screen display is not visible.
See clearly when looking at:
This optimized polarized technology provides the same glare reduction that a polarized lens offers, but allows full visibility of digital screens. No matter where you work, or what your hobbies may be, in today’s day and age, we find ourselves constantly using and relying on digital displays. GATORZ OPz lens offers those that require day usage of digital displays, to not sacrifice the glare reduction, while also allowing complete clarity beyond the screen.

Staying true to the GATORZ standard, the OPz eyewear is tested to protect your eyes and features high velocity impact resistant lenses, hydro-oleophobic coating for oil/grease repellant, UV protection and a scratch resistant hard coat.
GATORZ Optimized Polarized lenses are available in a wide selection of frame options, including, Delta, Specter, Magnum, Stark and Wraptor frame options.
American-made, and backed by a lifetime frame warranty, GATORZ frames are built from lightweight, durable, aircraft-grade billet 7075-T6 aluminum and are designed to provide excellent coverage. Both the frame and the nosepiece fully adjust to you, and not the other way around.

NSSF Welcomes Rep. Bergman’s FIND Act Introduction in Congress
NEWTOWN, Conn. — NSSF®, the firearm industry trade association, welcomed the introduction of H.R. 6970, the Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act, into Congress by U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.). The bill has 55 original co-sponsors. This vital legislation will end the ability of corporate entities from profiting from taxpayer-funded federal contracts while discriminating against a Constitutionally-protected industry at the same time.
“This legislation is critical to ensuring ‘woke’ corporations don’t use their financial might, funded by taxpayers, to deny essential services to the firearm industry,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Corporations, in particular financial institutions, have been dictating public policies from boardrooms that throttle firearm businesses, which are Constitutionally-protected. This bill will no longer allow those corporations to benefit from taxpayer dollars while at the same time using those funds to deny Americans their Second Amendment rights. We thank Congressman Bergman for his leadership to ensure fairness in business, reasserting Congress’s role in ensuring the federal government isn’t picking winners and losers in the marketplace based on politics and protecting the ability of a lawful industry to compete for services without artificial and agenda-driven barriers.”
Congressman Bergman’s FIND Act doesn’t tell companies with whom they must do business. However, just as companies can chose who they wish to do business with, so can the government when it spends taxpayer money. This bill ensures corporations cannot benefit from contracts and subcontracts funded by taxpayers only to use their financial strength to unfairly discriminate against the firearm industry. For far too long, corporations have engaged in “boardroom gun control” to force firearm businesses to adopt measures that would restrict Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Corporations are free to hold these anti-Second Amendment policies if they choose but would forfeit access to compete for federal contracts.
Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed a similar law in Texas in 2021 and similar legislation is being considered in other state capitols. Congressman Bergman’s legislation would bring those same fair business protections to the federal government to ensure corporate entities are not forcing policies that deny American civil liberties through the benefit of taxpayer-funded federal contracts.

Dear Valued Customer,
Thanks to you, we’ve experienced tremendous growth in our business volume and number of products we offer. A couple of years ago, we projected we’d soon be out of space, so we started the largest project in company history. We’re now in the final stages of moving our Distribution Center about 5-miles down the road to a new facility, just west of Columbia, MO.
Our new Distribution Center is 400,000 square feet, with plenty of room for expansion. The unique new NITRO Express® Shipping System we’re installing consists of brand-new state-of-the-art equipment. This new system will be faster, more accurate and more efficient than our previous system.
The conveyor and product storage/retrieval speed will allow us to receive and ship products faster, meaning we’ll get products in stock quicker and your orders will arrive sooner. Increased accuracy comes from precisely picking every order and verifying the correct weight with a high-tech scale to ensure no mistakes were made. Increased efficiency comes from custom building precisely sized cartons for each order, reducing the average box size by over 30%, meaning there is less room for products to shift in transit and become damaged. The remaining area (void) in the cartons is filled with one of three different types of materials, depending on the characteristics of each order, resulting in intact deliveries. We’re building the best package possible – extremely accurate, efficient, and durable!
We’ll be completely done with our inventory and operational transition in about 2-weeks. During that time, your order may take a few days longer than normal and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this causes.
I hope you enjoy the results of our new NITRO Express® Shipping System. Thanks so much for being a valued MidwayUSA Customer!

Team Winchester members Zach Kienbaum locked up a first-place win in Master Class (third overall), and Connor Daniel was the Sub-Junior runner-up.
This was the first year for the Jack Link’s Cup, which sold out with more than 750 total shooters vying for over $150,000 in prize money.
The next stop for Team Winchester this season will be the Gator Cup in Griffin, Georgia, taking place March 15-20.

Remington to donate one-million rounds of ammo to the Ukraine Armed Forces.
“ The war in Ukraine has displaced millions of citizens and exposed average people to the horrors of war,” said Jason Vanderbrink, President of Remington Ammunition. “Supporting the relief effort is a crucial element of the global response and we are proud to do our part. It underscores how critical the Second Amendment is in America and highlights the importance of the ability of American Manufacturers to supply our allies with ammunition. We have long supported Ukrainian armed forces and we will continue to do so in this global cause to unite for democracy.”
