How has COVID affected business? NDIA wants to know

NDIA survey seeks contractor feedback on COVID and business operations

ARLINGTON, VA – The National Defense Industrial Association encourages defense contractors to complete a survey on COVID-19 impacts to the industry, aiming to get a picture of business operations in the ongoing pandemic, the Arlington, Virginia-based trade association announces.

NDIA wants companies of all sizes – whether or not they are association members – to fill out the simple, three-question survey, available here until Sept. 7. The information will be part of the annual Vital Signs report, which measures the health and readiness of the U.S. defense industrial base. The next version will come out in early 2022.

A similar 2020 survey of defense contractors had more than 1,100 respondents, said Nick Jones, NDIA’s regulatory policy director who oversees the Vital Signs report.

“The last survey gave NDIA incredible insight into just how businesses were faring under pandemic conditions” Jones said. “We hope for even more responses this time, and more information as we look to help the defense industrial base thrive in these unprecedented times.”

Capped hunting turrets are made of rubber-armored metal for the perfect combination of durability and functionality. Replaceable Blade Knife from True Knives Means Never Going Dull

Fort Worth, Texas (August 24, 2021) – One of the most difficult parts of knife ownership is finding the time and tools to sharpen a dull blade properly. There’s nothing more annoying or dangerous than a dull knife when being used for fine tasks. Injuries from a completely or partially dull blade can be not only annoying but also life-threatening.

True brings to market a rugged and durable knife that features a unique system, allowing users to easily swap their knife blades. This Replaceable Blade Knife has a 2-step locking system and comes prepackaged with three blade options: two 3.5” drop point blades and one 3.5” saw blade.

A blade storage case is also included for a safe carry of extra blades while on the move. This unique 2-stage locking system is locked in place with the thumb stud. It slides back and forth for a lock and unlock setting. The blade must be released via a lever in the spine of the knife once unlocked.

Despite being able to replace them, each blade edge is made from 3CR13 stainless steel. 3CR13 is 0.3% carbon, 13% chromium and 0.6% nickel, along with other trace elements. This composition makes it highly corrosion-resistant while retaining a sharp edge for a longer period of time. Pairing the steel with a black oxide finish means that these blades can handle some extreme environments without showing signs of corrosion.

Black fiberglass-filled nylon scales house the liner lock system to keep the blade locked tightly in position. It is textured enough to add some gripping surface without collecting particles. A small deep pocket carry clip is attached on the right-hand side for a tip down right-handed carry. When opened, the Replaceable Blade Knife measures 8” overall, and closed it comes in at 4.5”. The knife is 0.75” thick and from top to bottom measures in at 1.5”. The overall size makes this an excellent every day carry option, fishing knife, utility knife or any various activity when general cutting is necessary.

Tailored to meet the demands of law enforcement and military professionals as well as long-range and precision rimfire competitions, the new Elite Tactical DMR3 delivers precision to 1,000 yards and beyond in a lightweight, compact package. For those seeking extreme long-range capabilities, including military shooters and ELR competitors, the XRS3 offers the highest magnification in the Elite Tactical family along with superior tracking and reliability.
Featuring the most advanced Elite Tactical optical system ever, both the DMR3 and XRS3 come with a high magnification ED Prime objective, as well as fully multi-coated elements, EXO Barrier™ protection and a new reticle element coating. The new coating pushes the limits of the ultrawideband coating system by increasing light transmission by nearly 2% over previous designs. The culmination of these improvements deliver state-of-the-art optical performance in an already proven, durable and repeatable package.
In addition, these scopes feature a new “G” series reticle designed in conjunction with G.A. Precision. Based on the G3 reticle, the new G4P design features a floating dot center POA, floating holdover dots, refined line widths, quick acquisition bars for low magnification settings, and a more open reticle space above the horizontal stadia.

Each scope boasts a multi-position ThrowHammer™ magnification lever, allowing a shooter to accommodate their particular rifle without concern of manipulation interference. Additional features include Rev-limiter™ Zero Stop elevation turret, locking windage target turret, and a removable sunshade. The DMR3 riflescope shortens the minimum parallax setting over the DMRII Pro from 50 to 25 yards while the all-new XRS3 has a minimum parallax setting of 50 yards and a D-Lok locking diopter.
“The XRS3 has a lot more with 36 power and a 56mm objective, but it still delivers a sharp crisp image at every magnification from the bottom to the top,” said Bryan Sikes, Elite Tactical pro. “What you are really getting is every benefit of the DRM3 in a more magnified package.”
The XRS3 features 29 MIL elevation travel and 15 MIL windage travel, as well as an (18ft @ 100yd) field of view on 6X power and a (3ft @ 100yd) field of view on 36X power. The scope is 14.9 inches long and weighs in at 39 ounces.
The DMR3 features 32 MIL elevation travel and 20 MIL windage travel, as well as a (25ft @ 100yd) field of view on 3.5X power and a (5ft @ 100yd) field of view on 21X power. The scope is 13.2 inches long and weighs in at 35.5 ounces.

Should Your Magnifier Include Ranging Stadia?

First came the red dot and reflex sights, both of these technologies vastly improved the accuracy and speed of target acquisition and engagement. Soon, operators determined they needed a way to add magnification to extend their range of engagement. The industry responded introducing 3X, 4X and 6X magnifiers . The magnifier sits behind the red dot sight and provides magnification. In use, the operator still sees the red dot but the target is now magnified. That’s all well and good but what is your target range, how much holdover do you use? I’ve used magnified red dot aiming systems and wished I could have an optical ranging tool as part of the magnifier. So, I tried an experiment to determine if having ranging stadia is in any way disruptive to the operator when using a magnifier.

I setup a test platform using a Crimson Trace red dot mounted just north of the trunnion,; I then mounted an IOR 4X24 M2 with a Dragunov style reticle to see how it all works out.

The image below is not representative of the actual optical clarity through the IOR 4X optic which was excellent, but stay with me. By the way, if you are not familiar with IOR Valdada, they make an outstanding magnified optic using excellent glass, they’re not cheap but you get what you pay for, check them out at Valdada Optics.

Getting back on topic, what I was trying to do is assess how disruptive, if at all, it would be to use a magnifier etched with ranging stadia. To test that, I used a fixed 4x optic, the IOR , which has excellent optical clarity and a Dragunov style reticle.

The picture above, and on the left, was taken through the IOR optic and through the red dot with the sight powered on, my photo bears no semblance to the actual image which was clear with a sharply defined red dot. Using this arrangement, I could easily determine that the vehicle, an SUV, is 2.5 mils wide. I know that SUV widths range from 69 in. to 79 in. , so I calculated an average (69+79)/2 arriving at 72 inches as my target width, so my range to the vehicle is approximately 800 yards. Rather than simply seeing a magnified image, I had the ability to accurately range my target. Having a ranging reticle provides the operator with actionable information to assist him or her in effectively and accurately engaging a long range target. Without a ranging reticle, the operator has to rely on Kentucky windage.

What I did in the picture on the right is photoshop out the excess reticle details leaving just the horizontal stadia to simulate what an operator would see looking through a magnifier with only ranging stadia etched – it’s uncluttered, clean and providing valuable range information to enhance the operators’ target engagement. There are a number of ranging reticles available; two of my favorites are a simple horizontal and vertical stadia or the Dragunov style shown below.

There’s currently a move to incorporate variable power magnified optics, usually in the 1x-6x and 1x-8x range, as a primary sight backed up by an offset red dot sight. This is an excellent configuration for a DMR operator but it adds weight and requires rotating the rifle inward to use the backup red dot sight; however, the benefits outweigh its disadvantages. On the other hand, for the average rifleman, there is no better fire control configuration than a red dot sight and magnifier with ranging stadia for rapid accurate fire.

Knife Industry Nonprofit Elects the President of CRKT as its Vice President

Cody, Wyoming (August 18, 2021) – At a recent meeting, the American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) unanimously elected Mark Schreiber, President CRKT (Columbia Knife & Tool), as Vice President. The nonprofit membership organization’s mission is to ensure that Americans will always be able to make, buy, sell, own, carry, and use knives and edged tools.

“I strongly support AKTI and its mission and goals,” said Mark Schreiber. “And I am proud to increase my participation by accepting the position of vice president. AKTI has successfully helped industry companies facing problems, including CRKT, initiated and supported legislation to remove restriction knife laws or clarify confusing ones, and provides the most reliable knife law information on our website.”

Mark Schreiber has served as President of CRKT since 2015, following responsibilities as Executive Vice President, Vice President of Operations, and IT & Systems Manager. Before that, he worked as Director of Professional Services for Fiserv.

The nonprofit’s position of vice president is a two-year term, including responsibilities to oversee the finance committee. The expectation of the vice president is that they will be the association’s next president. Mark Schreiber has already served several years on AKTI’s legislative committee, industry issues committee, and co-chairing the annual fundraiser “Free to Carry.”

CRKT, a member of the organization since 1998, accepted an invitation in 2009 to serve as a Board of Regent.

Holosun Technologies has been adding to their product line with some very impressive offerings. I’ll be reviewing one of their newest open red dot sights, the HE407K-GR X2. This is a green 6 MOA dot designed around the compact pistol frames, but as you’ll read in my upcoming review it is quite at home on a large frame tactical pistol. It does so with grace and a very clean lower profile. The 407K-GR X2 gives nothing up to a larger pricier sight, and it is waterproof to boot. Catch my upcoming review this September.

The R7 MAKO™: KIMBER’S NEW HIGH-CAPACITY, MICRO-COMPACT POLYMER PISTOL

TROY, AL, Aug. 19, 2021– Kimber Mfg., is excited to announce its entry into the polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol market with the R7 Mako, a micro-compact pistol chambered in 9mm.

Kimber reached out to carry enthusiasts and asked what was most important in a concealed-carry pistol; the resounding response included the requirement of an outstanding trigger and ability to carry with the confidence of having sufficient ammunition capacity for any situation.

Kimber addressed the trigger request with the R7 Mako’s unique flat-face Performance Carry Trigger™, which has a consistent short pull and a clean, crisp break, making the R7’s factory-set 5.0 to 6.75 pound trigger pull feel much lighter. The R7 Mako boasts class-leading 12-round capacity using the flush-fit magazine and 14-round capacity using the extended magazine.

Another distinctive feature is the R7’s stainless-steel slide, which wears an FNC finish, and covers the barrel hood to add rigidity, preventing debris from entering the pistol through the ejection port, and keeping the optic clean. The pistol also features ambidextrous controls for left and right-handed shooters, and the low-tilt, 3.37-inch, stainless-steel barrel mitigates recoil.

Topping off the R7 Mako is a set of TruGlo® Tritium Pro u-notch sights making target acquisition quick regardless of lighting conditions, and the slide on the R7 Mako Optics Ready (OR) model ships with a plate to protect the milled Shield-style footprint. The R7 Mako Optics Installed (OI) model includes a Crimson Trace® CTS-1500. Both R7 Mako models ship with a flush-fit 11+1 magazine as well as a 13+1 magazine, so the gun is carry-ready out of the box.  Additionally, 10+1 and 15+1 magazines will be available in the very near future.

The R7 Mako weighs in at 19.5 ounces, and measures a mere 1 inch wide, 4.3 inches tall, and 6.2 inches long overall.

NDIA: Send us HR info to help with visas for Afghan nationals

NDIA collects HR info to assist Afghan nationals seeking special visas

ARLINGTON, VA – The National Defense Industrial Association is gathering human-resource contact information to help verify employment of Afghan nationals who are applying for special immigrant visas to the United States, the Arlington, Virginia-based trade organization announced Thursday, Aug. 19.

Contractors that employed Afghan nationals are encouraged fill out this form<https://ndiapd.wufoo.com/forms/zu2k13e080kpps/>. This information will be shared with the departments of Defense and State, which asked NDIA for help in collecting the human-resources details.

Those who qualify for the special immigrant visas worked for U.S. contractors for at least one year as of Oct. 7, 2001, and who may be employed through Dec. 31, 2023, according to the State Department<https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/special-immg-visa-afghans-employed-us-gov.html>. Applicants must be under serious threat for their safety as a consequence of their employment.
