NSSF Announces Study on Assessing the Quality and Availability of Hunting and Shooting Access in the United States

With support from an AFWA grant, new research looks at availability, access, issues and current perceptions

NEWTOWN, Conn. — Access to hunting land and to shooting ranges are key indicators affecting the future of hunting and sport shooting. A new study, announced by the National Shooting Sports Foundation®, reports on findings regarding current availability of public and private areas accessible for hunting and sport shooting collected from a nationwide survey that included a trend analysis to see how perceptions have changed over the last decade.

With support from a grant awarded by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies’ (AFWA) Multistate Conservation Grant program, the report titled “Assessing the Quality and Availability of Hunting and Shooting Access in the United States,” produced by Responsive Management, provides major findings from the surveys reporting on activity locations, factors considered for location selection and factors that affect hunter/shooter enjoyment, access constraints and ratings, information sources for locations and user awareness of programs and resources.

Beyond the survey information reported is a robust recommendations section – 99 of them in all. A recurring message in many of the recommendations is the importance of current information supported by using effective communication, marketing, branding and outreach strategies. These efforts have a clear impact on awareness of, participation in, and satisfaction with access programs/resources, and will increase the success of implemented programs.

Attached to the Assessing the Quality and Availability of Hunting and Shooting Access in the United States report is a Hunting and Shooting Access Inventory Report that includes a national summary total and a one-page report per state. A detailed Excel file reporting all 50 states is also available for download.

A visit to Spyderco’s exhibit revealed some truly outstanding folders but at the top of the list was Michael Janich’s YoJumbo design., a follow-up offering to his more petit YoJimbo 2. YoJumbo’s larger size is not the only enhancement, the limited edition Sprint Run features carbon fiber handle scales and an upgraded CMP S90V steel make this folder truly unique.

SHOT SHOW 2022–FN USA

If you like guns, FN’s exhibit is a can’t miss on your to do list. The company marks its beginnings to 1889 as Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre when a group of Belgian arms makers got together to build 150,000 Mausers. Over the years, the company has produced firearms like the legendary Hi-Power 9mm pistol, the FN FAL, as well as the more modern M240- and M249-series of crew-served machine guns. FN, Browning and Winchester are all part of the Herstal Group. Industry wide, if it went bang, there’s a very good chance that FN and its designers had something to do with it.

This year, 2022, is a special year in that FN has reintroduced the iconic Hi-Power but they didn’t just duplicate the same design that made you suicidal at the thought of having to field strip it. They kept all of its unique characteristics with significant improvements to make the 2022 offering far more ergonomic, an improved fire control group, and increased magazine capacity. If you’re familiar with the original, you know all too well about its propensity to not cycle reliably or stovepipe with commercial 9mm ammunition, FN zeroed in on those concerns and has improved both accuracy and reliability of its 2022 release. Prospective buyers, you’ll have three flavors to choose from at an M.S.R.P. of $1300.

NSSF Invites Employees of Patron Member Companies to Apply for $50,000 in Education Scholarships

NEWTOWN, Conn. — Employees of companies that support the National Shooting Sports Foundation® at the highest level may apply for education aid through the NSSF® Patron Member Scholarship Program. NSSF has made a total of $50,000 in scholarship funding available this year for a maximum of 25 winning entries.

NSSF is accepting applications in the Patron Member Scholarship Program through 5 p.m. EST on Friday, February 28, 2022.

Scholarships are available only to employees and their family members of Patron Member companies of NSSF. (For specific eligibility, refer to the official guidelines.) The scholarship program is one of a number of benefits that Patron Member companies receive from NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade Association.

Applicants must be enrolled in, or have been accepted and plan to attend, a college, university or vocational school during the fall 2022 school year. Scholarships are limited to candidates seeking an undergraduate or vocational degree only. The complete rules, applications and scholarship posters are available on this Scholarship Program webpage. NSSF urges applicants to read the rules thoroughly before applying.

The NSSF Patron Member Scholarship requires an essay on one of the following topics:

· Discuss how being a target shooter or hunter has positively influenced your life and taught you about responsibility, firearm safety, conservation and other important values.

· Discuss why it is important for the firearm industry – including manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and shooting ranges – to be represented by a trade association like NSSF and have a voice of protection and advocacy.

· In the last two years the number of women involved in hunting and the shooting sports has increased dramatically. What are some ways that the gun-owing community, firearm retailers and shooting ranges/clubs, and various gun rights organizations can help welcome these new participants?

Submitted essays must be in English, typed, double-spaced and single-sided, on 8.5 by 11-inch format in 11 or 12 point Times New Roman font, Microsoft Word format and not exceed two pages (not including bibliography). No PDF essays will be accepted; however, the application itself may be submitted in PDF format.

Twenty-five applicants with the highest overall scores will be selected as scholarship prize winners. The applicant with the highest scored essay will earn the grand prize $8,000 scholarship. One first-place prize winner with the second-highest scored essay will receive a scholarship of $5,000. One second-place prize winner with the third-highest scored essay will receive a scholarship of $3,000. The remaining 22 runner-up prize winners will each receive a scholarship of $1,500. NSSF will notify the winners by email by and then list the recipients on its website after their acceptance.

The MeoSport R features exposed lockable turrets calibrated in 1/10 MRAD and a range of 26 MRAD (90 MOA) of elevation and wind adjustment. The optical clarity of the scope is exceptional, and parallax is adjustable from 10 yards to infinity using the side focus knob. The scope ships with the 4C illuminated reticle that I found particularly interesting. The 4C is a basic duplex reticle with an illuminated center dot. I found that the illuminated center dot had the same optical effect as a red dot sight.

I’ll summarize my initial impression by saying that the MeoSport R is as good as some of its high-end competitors and at its $499 MSRP it’s the best value in town. If you need an entry level optic, you won’t find a better deal than the MeoSport R 3-15×50

PROOF OF VACCINATION: All attendees will be required to provide proof of vaccination or proof of negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of badge pick up. Details for securely providing documentation will be provided on the event website.

Stopped at the Caesars Forum, which I thought looked great, to check out Desert Tech’s latest offering the Quattro-15 AR lower receiver. I have to call it ingenious because it really is. The design retains all of the functionality of the standard AR-15 lower receiver but accepts the Quadmag-53 magazine. This arrangement expands the weapon’s magazine capacity to 53 rounds from the standard 30 rounds. The Quattro-15’s 53 round magazines gives operators the ability to carry a 210 round loadout with only 4 magazines instead of 7 reducing loadout weight by 8%.

The Quattro-15 sells as a stripped lower receiver for $299.99 and does accept standard AR-15 magazines as well as the Quadmag-53.

ETI’s Seraphin chosen for commission to examine defense PPBE

ARLINGTON, VA — Arun Seraphin, deputy director of NDIA’s Emerging Technologies Institute, is among defense experts appointed to the newly formed Commission on Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE) Reform, the National Defense Industrial Association announces Feb 9.

Seraphin is among 14 officials named to the high-level panel that will assess PPBE’s effectiveness within the Defense Department and consider more efficient alternatives plus policy changes to get those alternatives in place quickly. The goal is to enable U.S. defense to meet the growing challenges posed by near-peer competitor nations, such as China.

Seraphin is the sole choice of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who was tasked to pick one member of the commission.

“A born and raised New Yorker from Long Island and Stony Brook graduate, Arun Seraphin is a long-acknowledged leader on national defense policy. His expertise will be vital to ensuring the Department of Defense processes are up to date and responsive enough to serve the needs of our nation’s military and provide good stewardship of taxpayers resources,” Schumer said. “I am confident his experience will help the DoD usher in a modern era of American innovation and competitiveness.”

“NDIA is so proud to have Arun on this very important committee,” said President and CEO Hawk Carlisle. “His knowledge and wisdom on these critical matters is exactly what such a commission needs to make not just smart decisions but executable decisions to bolster our national security.”

Seraphin recently joined ETI from the Senate Armed Services Committee, where among his many roles, he aided senators in oversight of the Defense Department’s policies and programs. He specialized in acquisition policy, Pentagon management, budget authorization and programs in science and technology, among others.

The commission came about under a mandate in the National Defense Authorization Act and must submit its final report to congressional Armed Services Committees by Sept. 24, 2023. Also serving on the commission are Ellen Lord, former undersecretary of Defense for acquisition and sustainment, and David Norquist, former deputy secretary of Defense, among other notable appointments.

SHOT SHOW 2022–Arsenal Inc.

Arsenal is another Eastern European defense industry company, and global supplier of firearms and military equipment. Arsenal Inc. is the licensed U.S.A. based importer and manufacturer of very high quality rifles. The company is know for their milled receiver AKs chambered in 7.62×39, 5.56×45 and 5.45x39mm.

My two takeaways from a visit at Shot Show, is the AR-M5F rail system and the availability of custom shop services. If you’ll remember the Parabellum Armament AK Adaptive Rail System – AKARS (now out of business), the AR-M5F achieves the same objective using a slightly different approach.

The AKARS attaches to the trunnion but anchors the rail on the dust cover. The AKARS made it possible to get away from the side mounting of optic rails that made it difficult to achieve a good cheek weld. AKARS opened up the Kalashnikov platforms to the red dot and holographic sight offerings on the market.

Arsenal Inc uses a similar strategy but they anchor the rail to the receiver using a locking detent. A feature I felt was slicker than cat poop on linoleum is the ability to use the AR-M5F rail as the gas tube lever. Arsenal uses the system on the SAM5-94 and the SAM7R. You can also purchase the AR-M5F separately, for $199 MSRP, the company will be publishing an installation video. As of this writing, only milled receivers will accept the AR-M5F. A great concept, but I wish the locking latch were placed on the left side.

FN AWARDED U.S. ARMY CONTRACT FOR M240L MEDIUM MACHINE GUNS AND TITANIUM RECEIVERS

(McLean, VA – February 8, 2022) FN America, LLC is pleased to announce that the company has been awarded a firm-fixed-price contract, valued up to $49,973,579, to supply the U.S. Army with M240L medium machines and titanium receivers. The M240L, roughly 18-percent lighter than the M240B, was officially adopted in 2010 after a joint effort by FN and the U.S. Army to reduce the overall weight while maintaining performance and durability of the machine gun.

“The M240L is the product of a collaborative effort between FN, the Army and the individual soldier to further enhance the M240B to be more effective for the warfighter,” said Mark Cherpes, President and CEO for FN America, LLC. “The development saw the introduction of new materials along with new manufacturing techniques that have paved the way for the future generation of military equipment. I am extremely proud of the innovation and ingenuity that went into the development of the M240L and look forward to working with the U.S. Army to deliver against this contract.”

The joint efforts between FN, the Army to reduce the overall weight burden to the soldier resulted in a major leap forward in the materials and manufacturing methods for today’s machine guns. The M240L has been the cutting-edge for lightweight medium machine guns with an overall weight reduction of 5 pounds from the M240B without any impact to performance or longevity. The 18-percent weight reduction was achieved by incorporating titanium into the design, including the receiver, and introducing new manufacturing methods to adjust for the material properties. The M240 general purpose machine gun, derived from the FN MAG 58, was adopted by the U.S. military in the late 1970s, and has been in continual service since being introduced.
