SHOT SHOW INDUSTRY DAY–RUBOX BALLISTIC SYSTEM

RUBOX BALLISTIC SYSTEMS is a Polish company that produces Active Rubber Ballistic Blocks and Ballistic Granulate. The Active Rubber Blocks are easily transportable and can be readily assembled to construct a shoothouse or duplicate a tactical environment based on intelligence reports. Using the RUBOX products, operators can plan and practice tactical assaults without the need to build plywood structures.or sandbags.

The blocks are then filled with their ballistic granulate to create a bullet proof training environment. The granulate is a specially developed mineral mixture which insures the total lose of bullet kinetic energy. The temperature caused by the stopping of the bullets is also absorbed. Finally it is possible to separate bullet waste from the rest of the granulate. The granulate is also humidity and temperature resistant.

The RUBOX System facilitates the customization of training for military and law enforce where access to training facilities, especially in metropolitan areas, may be difficult to obtain.

SHOT SHOW 2022 – Magpul x Maztech X4 System

Magpul and Maztech Industries are collaborating to develop and begin commercial sales of the X4 System, so what is an X4 system. Simply stated, it’s a system of integrated sensors that interact with your weapons system and its low power variable magnification optic to provide an automatic firing solution. At the present time, Magpul is expected to provide the magazine, grip and trigger guard that will supply a rounds remaining information while Maztech will deliver the X4 system. The X4 utilizes the user supplied variable power optic in both 30mm or 34mm and it’s expected to be available Q4 of 2022, which seems somewhat ambitious. The Magpul / Maztech partnership has some interesting aspirations for the X4 System, but to quote a hackneyed cliché, the proof is in the pudding. One thing is certain, the future is at hand.

The ballistic engine uses wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, altitude, pitch, roll and heading.

The 22nd Annual S&ET Conference planning team continues to monitor the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation as the health of our event participants, members, and partners remains our top priority. We are committed to following the guidelines and precautions as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Attendees can expect to see the following at NDIA events:

PROOF OF VACCINATION: All attendees will be required to provide proof of vaccination or proof of negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of badge pick up. Details for securely providing documentation will be provided on the event website.
MASKS: Fully vaccinated attendees are encouraged to wear face masks but, in accordance with CDC guidance, may make that choice for themselves. If you are not fully vaccinated, you are required to wear a face mask in public places.
WAIVER: All registrants are required to sign the COVID-19 waiver during the online registration process. Attendees may disclose their vaccination status at the time of signing.
SOCIAL DISTANCING: Additional venue space will be available to allow for attendees to spread out. Timed badge pick-ups will be implemented to reduce crowding at registration.

History of SB21-078, the “Isabella Joy Thallas Act”

In 2020, state representatives of the Colorado Legislature proposed HB20-1356. This bill would have required firearm owners to report a lost or stolen firearm within 48 hours of discovering that their firearm was missing. However, the progress of that bill was derailed by the pandemic as government offices shut down across the state.

Shortly after, in June 2020, a gunman used a stolen firearm to fatally shoot Isabella Thallas and severely injure her boyfriend in downtown Denver. This tragic event reignited the debate regarding mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms. Upon resuming hearings in early 2021, the Colorado Legislature wasted no time in proposing a similar bill, SB21-078.

Though hotly contested through the legislative process, SB21-078 (officially the “Isabella Joy Thallas Act”) was passed and signed into law by Governor Jared Polis on April 19, 2021, and became effective on September 7, 2021. Before the passage of SB21-078, there were no mandatory reporting requirements related to lost or stolen firearms under Colorado law. This new Colorado law can be found in Colorado Revised Statutes Section 18-12-113.

IT’S 2022 AND TIME FOR OUR FIRST SHOOT THE SHIT OF THE YEAR!

I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and New Year celebration. How are you holding up under the pressure of COVID and it’s variants? Don’t let it get you down nor concern yourself by what you hear or see on social media. The best thing you can do to relieve that pressure is stop listening to social media and all the pundits. The vaccine won’t keep you from contracting COVID or keep you from spreading it, but it will keep you from getting seriously ill from it. Talk it over with your primary care physician and get vaccinated.

Since this is our first shoot the shit for 2022, I’ll kick it off with a bit of cultural awareness.

In case you were unaware, the Chinese New Year kicks off 1 February 2022 and it’s the Year of the Tiger. So, if you’re Chinese, let me wish you a Happy New Year!

The Tiger is known as the king of all beasts in China. The zodiac sign Tiger is a symbol of strength, exorcising evils, and braveness. Many Chinese kids wear hats or shoes with a tiger image for good luck. The Tiger ranks third among the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The 12 zodiac animals are, in order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each year is related to an animal sign according to a 12-year-cycle. Man I could go for some DimSum!

For those of you new to the site, a shoot the shit is a social interaction during which any topic is discussed. Participants don’t need to know anything about the topic, are free to make any unsupported statement, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject. Regular shoot the shits with friends, coworkers or family members will keep you out of a therapist’s office saving you $150+ per hour. Moving right along.

I read regularly and ran across this New York Times headline: The United States plans to arrange alternative fuel sources for Europe, in case Russia cuts off gas and crude oil supplies., Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

I looked at it and thought, what does Germany use for power? Well they use crude, gas and nuclear power, although they’re shutting down three nuclear power plants. So what the hell is an alternative fuel source the Germans could use, bottled flatulence? What they were trying to suggest is that whatever the Russians cutoff will be supplied by the U.S.!

A quick Shot Show 2022 story

As always it was a great event and NSSF deserves a great deal of credit. This year was the maiden voyage of Caesar’s Forum, which increased total exhibition space to just about 800,000 square feet, it was very well laid-out. If you’re planning on exhibiting at the 2023 SHOT SHOW the Caesar’s Forum is very nice space. This year, many of the major exhibitors did not attend over concerns about COVID and employee safety. It wasn’t uncommon to see signs and other spirited displays like those below. Several of the exhibitors who attended were running thin on booth staff.

Many in our industry manufacture product that require the use of semiconductors so I want to call your attention to a recent report from the Department of Commerce.

U.S. Department of Commerce released the results from the Risks in the Semiconductor Supply Chain Request for Information (RFI) issued in Sept. 2021. Key findings from the report provided data-driven information about the depths of the semiconductor shortage and underscored the need for the President’s proposed $52 billion in domestic semiconductor production.

Demand for semiconductors is as much as 17 percent higher in 2021 than it was in 2019, and consumers aren’t seeing commensurate increases in the available supply.
The majority of semiconductor manufacturing facilities are operating at or above 90 percent utilization, meaning there is limited additional supply to bring online without building new facilities.
Bottlenecks are most concentrated in a specific semiconductor inputs and applications, including legacy logic chips (used in automobiles, medical devices, and other products), analog chips (used in power management, image sensors, and radio frequency), and optoelectronics chips (including for sensors and switches).
The main bottleneck that respondents identified is the need for additional fab capacity. Additional bottlenecks that respondents identified include a lack of raw material inputs for both semiconductors and the other components paired with semiconductors to assemble sub-parts for electric devices.

The RFI asked all parts of the semiconductor supply chain – producers, consumers, and intermediaries – to voluntarily share information about inventories, demand, and delivery dynamics.

The results of the RFI are included in a report and blog released by the Department of Commerce.

The takeaway from this report is plan your purchases well in advance and in quantities that support your manufacturing and sales forcasts. You can forget Just In Time manufacturing if you rely on semiconductors, at least until we get our manufacturing capacity revved up.

SHOT SHOW 2022 INDUSTRY DAY BARRETT MRAD MK22

I made a trip to the Long-Range exhibits at the range for an opportunity to fire the amazing Barrett MRAD (Multi-role Adaptive Design) MK22. This rifle is a multicaliber user configurable platform that has been adopted by USSOCOM, Army and Marine Corps. The modularity of this rifle is noteworthy and extremely well thought out. During my visit, I fired the .300 Norma Magnum. The folding stock tucks away neatly and is jumpable.

In 2019, the U.S. Special Operations Command awarded Barrett Manufacturing a $50,000,000 contract, ordering the Barrett MRAD chambered in .338 Norma Magnum for the Advanced Sniper Rifle project as the MK22 ASR. The issued rifle kit includes swappable barrels and bolts chambered in .308 Winchester, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum. As part of their fiscal year 2021 budget requests, both the Army and Marine Corps included requests to adopt the MRAD as their primary sniper systems.

The Barrett MK22 is one of the best sniper platforms available and it was a real treat to send a few rounds downrange.

Kansas City, KS (January 26, 2022) – For anyone looking to get serious about rimfire competition shooting without the costs of a full-on custom rifle, a new day has dawned. CZ-USA has released its match-grade MTR chamber and the extremely tight tolerances that come with it in one of the gunmaker’s most popular 22 LR bolt guns—the 457 Varmint Precision Trainer (VPT).

The MTR chamber has already proven itself in its namesake, CZ 457 Varmint MTR rifle, and has garnered an excellent reputation for accuracy. The MTR variant of the VPT allows shooters to buy an affordable, match-chambered rifle that’s ready to compete right out of the box. This eliminates the perceived need to upgrade any major components, putting this rifle a step above the competition.

The Precision Trainer series was designed to provide the same look and feel as a full-size tactical rifle while allowing for more economical training. Though the golden days of cheap and plentiful 22 LR ammo may be behind us, the Precision Trainer has become more popular than we ever could have imagined.

The 457 VPT MTR merges the best of both models with the Manners carbon-fiber composite stock and the MTR chamber. This model utilizes a cold hammer-forged and lapped 16.2-inch barrel for superior accuracy. It is also threaded to allow easy installation of a suppressor or muzzle device.

New for 2022 the Manners carbon fiber stock now features an adjustable cheekpiece. The forend is recessed, drilled, and threaded for use with an Arca Rail. It still comes with the basic features that have set the 457 family of rifles apart; a fully adjustable trigger, a 5-round detachable magazine, and integrated 11mm dovetails for scope installation with an MSRP of $1,635.

SHOT SHOW 2022 INDUSTRY DAY MAXIM DEFENSE

One of my more interesting stops while at SHOT SHOW 2022 Industry Day was a visit with the great folks of MAXIM DEFENSE. This highly regarded firearms and accessories manufacturer from St.Cloud, Minnesota will be launching a full line of suppressors that should start shipping Q2 of 2022. MAXIM’s manufacturing expertise is visible throughout and includes integrally suppressed MKIV 22 LR, 30 cal., direct attach and quick attach detach. I didn’t have access to a sound meter but sound attenuation is excellent and as good as any of their competitors, the 7.62 version measures at around 130db and their 22 LR comes in at around 113db. I’ll have more for you in subsequent SHOT SHOW posts; by the way, all of their suppressors are user serviceable. You have to love that.

(January 2022) – MasterPiece Arms (MPA), manufacturer of precision Pistol, BA Rifles and Chassis Systems, is pleased to announce several exciting updates to its popular DS Series Pistol line. The assembly operation of its popular wide-body, double-stack 1911 pistol line will be moved in-house to MPA’s Comer, Georgia manufacturing location from the previous Camilla location. This move will ensure that the same quality assurance and attention to detail that MPA’s bolt action rifles and chassis receive will be given to its world-class pistol line. To support this commitment to quality, MPA has also hired David Lyell to head the DS Platform as its new Product Line Manager. Lyell is an experienced custom pistol builder and USPSA Grandmaster and comes to MPA with 22 years of experience in machining and metalworking.

Having become the “go-to gunsmith” in his area for the local shooters, Lyell has built and experimented with quite a few different race gun setups and has gained invaluable experience of what works and what doesn’t. Currently, a USPSA Grandmaster in the Open Division, Lyell got his start in competitive shooting in the Production Division before moving to the Carry Optics Division where he received his Master classification. Other credits include becoming the 2020 South Carolina State Champion in Open Division, a third-place overall finish at the Area 6 Championship in 2021, and numerous other state and area accolades.

MPA acquired the wide-body, double-stack 1911 pistol line from Freedom Gunworks at the end of 2019, with the DS9 Hybrid Pistol as the first product introduction. The previous owner Bobby Keigans stayed on through the end of 2021 to ensure a smooth transition of the competition-ready pistols.

NSSF Retailer Surveys Indicate 5.4 Million First-Time Gun Buyers in 2021

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the firearm industry trade association, revealed that at least 5.4 million people purchased a firearm for the first time in 2021. Nearly 30 percent of all firearm purchases last year went to new gun owners, based on NSSF’s retailer surveys and adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background checks.

That figure is a 10 percent decrease from the 40 percent of first-time gun buyers revealed in similar surveys in 2020. More than 21 million background checks were conducted for the sale of a firearm then, with over 8.4 million of those estimated to be for those buying a firearm for the first time.

“We welcome these new gun owners to the greater community of law-abiding Americans who choose to own a firearm for lawful purposes, including self-defense, recreational target shooting and hunting,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “The surveys revealed that new gun owners are continuing to embrace their Second Amendment rights and nearly half of them are seeking out professional training. These trends show that not only is there still a strong interest in gun ownership but also that these new gun owners are interested in learning more about the safe and responsible handling, use and storage of firearms.”

Similar retailer surveys in 2020 showed a 58 percent increase of African-Americans buying guns in 2020 vs. 2019, with a 49 percent increase of Hispanic-Americans during the same time period and a 43 percent increase of Asian-Americans buying firearms in 2020 compared to 2019. Nearly 60 percent of retailers said the increase of these demographic groups of first-time buyers purchasing firearms remain unchanged from 2020 to 2021.

NSSF’s 2021 survey of retailers showed several other key findings:

· Nearly 47 percent of first-time gun buyers in 2021 inquired about training and 43 percent signed up for training.
· Nearly 23 percent of retailers indicated that first-time gun buyers in 2020 purchased another firearm in 2021.
· Over 33 percent of first-time gun buyers in 2021 were women.
· 44 percent of retailers saw an increase of African-Americans purchasing firearms in 2021.
· Nearly 40 percent of retailers saw an increase of Hispanic-Americans purchasing firearms in 2021.
· Over 27 percent of retailers saw an increase of Asian-Americans purchasing firearms in 2021.
· Over 18 percent of retailers saw an increase of Native-Americans purchasing firearms in 2021.
· Nearly 14 percent of retailers saw an increase of Native-Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders purchasing firearms in 2021.
