ETI Tech Thursdays

Give us an hour of your time and we will help you understand the technologies DoD has identified as being critical to future military operations!

NDIA knows how hard it is for national security professionals to keep up with all of the technical advances happening in universities and research labs. All of us have heard of hypersonics, quantum science, and blockchain, but very few of us understand the science behind these technologies or how they could impact our professional lives.

Join NDIA and our Emerging Technologies Institute (ETI) for our new summer webinar series, Tech Thursdays, where we offer entry-level overviews of the science behind, and defense implications of, critical emerging technologies. No prior familiarity with the topic is required, and all NDIA, WID, and NTSA members are invited to attend.

Blockchain 101 with Dr. Ian Taylor, CTO and Co-Founder, SIMBA Chain
Thursday, July 21, 2022 | 1:00 pm EDT

Web3, and its underlying blockchain technology, promises to revolutionize the way we secure and transition assets across society, with some projecting that it could be as revolutionary as the internet was in the 1990s. In this talk, Dr. Ian Taylor will provide a background on the notion of distributed ledger technologies, including blockchain, and explain how they work and why they are different from centralized approaches. The presentation will then provide example usages of blockchain, starting with a simple cryptocurrency example, but then illustrating how blockchain can be used to support the transition of state for any digital (or physical) asset without using a central coordinator. The presentation will discuss the blockchain features that enable this vision and describe which problems blockchain is a good fit for. The presentation will then discuss the potential impact of blockchain across different industrial sectors, and then give several use case examples from practical commercial blockchain uses today. Finally, Dr. Taylor will present current use cases implemented in the DoD that aim to enable more efficiency for part tracking across the DoD and with OEM manufacturers.

NSSF Announces Over 24 Million MSRs in Circulation

The MSR remains the most-popular selling centerfire semiautomatic rifle in the United States today.

For immediate release | July 20, 2022

Commonly Owned: NSSF Announces Over 24 Million MSRs in Circulation

NEWTOWN, Conn. — NSSF®, the firearm industry trade association, updated the industry estimate of Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) in circulation in the United States to 24,446,000 since 1990. That is an increase of over 4.5 million rifles since the last estimate was released in 2020.

The estimate is derived from NSSF research, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Exportation Report (AFMER) and U.S. International Trade Commission (U.S. ITC) data, in cooperation with manufacturers, importers and exporters of MSRs, or AR-15 and AK-style rifles. This most recent estimate includes production figures current through 2020, when the industry estimates over 2,798,000 of these rifles were produced or imported. This estimate does not include MSRs that were produced and exported or imported and later exported.

The MSR remains the most-popular selling centerfire semiautomatic rifle in the United States today. There are more MSRs in circulation today than there are Ford F-Series trucks on the road.

“This is a truly significant figure that demonstrates – again – the popularity of this commonly-owned style of rifle,” said NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi. “The firearm industry responds to market demand and this shows that during the elevated period of firearm sales that began in 2020, this particular style of rifle is the top choice for law-abiding citizens for hunting, recreational shooting and self-defense.”

The MSR’s popularity for lawful ownership is attributable to several factors, including accuracy, reliability, modularity and low recoil.

About NSSF

NSSF is the trade association for the firearm industry. Its mission is to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. Formed in 1961, NSSF has a membership of thousands of manufacturers, distributors, firearm retailers, shooting ranges, sportsmen’s organizations and publishers nationwide. Troy Ruiz Inducted into Mississippi Outdoor Hall of Fame

Decades of Work and Education in the Hunting Community Recognized

MADISON, Miss. – July 20, 2022 – Troy Ruiz, former host on The Truth About Hunting, was recently inducted into the Mississippi Outdoor Hall of Fame for his decades of work positively impacting the outdoor and hunting community in Mississippi and beyond. Remarks from Ruiz’ long-time friend and founder of Primos Hunting, Will Primos, were read at the ceremony.

“From the first time I met Troy, it was obvious he was passionate about the outdoors and would be going places,” Primos said. “No one works harder, anticipates better and can call better than Troy Ruiz! He can do it all with just his natural voice!”

Ruiz is best known for his career as a host on Primos Hunting’s The Truth About Hunting TV program. At the early age of nine, the deer hunting bug hit him, and Troy began taking pictures and video to share his experiences with friends and family. Troy’s love for the outdoors and sharing it with others motivated him throughout his career.

“Troy, you of all the people in the hunting world deserve this honor,” Primos said. “As far as that goes, you are not only a hall of famer in Mississippi, but you qualify for being a hall of famer in Canada, Africa, Alaska, Montana, New Mexico, California, Alabama, definitely Louisiana and every place in between.”

During the award presentation, Ruiz was joined by his wife, Belinda, and daughter, Shanna.

The mission of the Mississippi Wildlife Heritage Foundation, the nonprofit organization that organizes the museum, is to preserve the history, heritage and traditions of hunting, fishing and the great outdoors in Mississippi. To honor the people who have been a part of it and to educate the public on the vast natural resources of the great state of Mississippi. The museum chronicles the evolution of hunting and fishing in the state as well as the outdoor photographers and artists who have portrayed it.

Fisher Space Pen Takes Flight in ZERO-G Experience

Fisher Space Pen Takes Flight in ZERO-G Experience®

Boulder City, NV (July 20, 2022) – Headlines of the Los Angeles Herold-Examiner read, “Dream in 1948 Leads to ‘Perfect Inscribing Tool’ on Earth, in Space.” This article about Paul Fisher announced the vision of the Fisher Space Pen. Paul C. Fisher was a perfectionist, machinist, inventor, politician and screw and pen manufacturer. He improved Mr. Reynolds’s ballpoint pen and pressurized ink cartridge developed for the AG7 Anti-Gravity Pen.

On July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle from Apollo 11 landed at Tranquility Base. TV united the world on that historic day and will be remembered as long as humanity exists. This July 20, 2022, Fisher Space Pens commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing with style!

The ultimate proving ground for any invention is seeing it thrive in the environment for which it was made. Fisher Space Pens took a small crew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for some real-world experience with the Zero-Gravity Corporation. Seeing is believing as brothers Paul and Matt Fisher had the opportunity to experience weightlessness and use their grandfather’s invention. Along for the ride were members of The Chive media group and a camera crew, as they documented the hilarious and innovative experience to commemorate the anniversary of such a historical event.

It was a challenging experience, to say the least, as the airplane flies in parabolic arcs to create a weightless environment. Passengers were able to use the pens from all angles as they were lifted off the plane’s floor surface. The brothers could feel the connection to their grandfather’s creation, especially seeing the AG7 suspended as they floated, flipped and soared as if they were in space. Experiencing what was envisioned in the 1960s and testing them first-hand on the ZERO-G Experience® adds to the company’s legacy and the Fisher family name.

There is a Fisher Space Pen for everyone, wherever you may find yourself. Through the good times and recent pandemic hardship, founder Paul C. Fisher would be proud of how brothers Matt and Paul have taken the company to new heights. They carry their grandfather’s passion from a screw machine company, Fisher Armory, to Fisher Space Pens. They are, in fact, a product of the American dream!

Fisher Space Pen Co. is a 74-year-old American manufacturer of ballpoint pens, with the notable distinction of being the only ballpoint pen used on every crewed flight into space since Apollo 7 back in 1968 and most recently with SpaceX. While pressurized technology made it possible for NASA’s astronauts to write in space, it also provided writing capabilities in all-weather, underwater, over oil and grease and from -30 to +250 degrees Fahrenheit. These pens are the perfect tool for trade professionals, first responders, military, rugged outdoor enthusiasts, trekkers, backpackers, industrial manufacturers, underwater divers and anyone who values a pen that doesn’t fail.

Wilson Combat Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary With a New 1911 Model

To commemorate Wilson Combat’s 45th Anniversary of gunsmithing, we are bringing back a classic “retro” style that built the foundation of our business back in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  Custom 1911 handguns of that period were rapidly evolving based on the needs of practical pistol shooters and Wilson Combat emerged as a leader in 1911 handgun customization by focusing on performing superior quality work at a fair price with a reasonable delivery time-those core values still drive our business today.

45th Anniversary

The 45th Anniversary 1911 handguns that we are building are very limited in nature and truly exceptional in cosmetics and quality.  We have chosen to revert back to some of the classic custom touches we were known for like an upswept, retro grip safety, traditional Bo-Mar style adjustable rear sight with a staked ramp front, a retro Commander style hammer,  Swenson-style ambidextrous thumb safety, and a coarsely serrated slide top reminiscent of the finest bespoke guns available to shooters at the time.

This custom 45th Anniversary model will dress out in a fully hand-polished deluxe blue finish with handcrafted, premium desert ironwood grips featuring a smooth finish that shows off its amazing grain and markings and logos will harken back to our early models, albeit with more modern cosmetics.

GA-ASI Adds Optix Capabilities to STARE

GA-ASI ADDS OPTIX CAPABILITIES TO STARE

Optix Brings Cloud-Based, Big Data Processing and Analytics to STARE’s Intel Picture

SAN DIEGO – 18 July 2022 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has integrated the Optix platform into its System for Tasking And Real-Time Exploitation (STARE) system. Optix delivers cloud-based, big data processing and analytics to STARE, providing operators with a common operating picture by integrating and displaying wide area surveillance information gathered by GA-ASI Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and commercial space-based and terrestrial data sources.

The new Optix capabilities enable customers to easily task and direct Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets in real time, as well as to automatically identify and classify objects of interest using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) techniques. In addition, it rapidly exploits and correlates data collected from RPA, commercial satellites, and other sources into an easily shared common operational picture (COP). Having multi-source correlated data enables automatic detection of anomalous behaviors, such as dark vessels, ship-to-ship transfers, and Economic Exclusive Zone violations.

“STARE improves user experience while decreasing personnel requirements,” said Darren Moe, senior director of Automation, Autonomy, and Artificial Intelligence (A3I) for GA-ASI. “The addition of Optix enables GA to help our customers more easily decipher and apply the vast amounts of sensor data produced by both government and commercial ISR platforms and accelerates the speed of decisions. This will ultimately save lives, secure resources, deter conflicts and give us safer conditions in any domain.”

STARE provides end users with actionable intelligence. When anomalous behaviors are detected from the AI/ML models, alerts will now be generated for the end user to evaluate; these alerts include spatio-temporal location, details of the anomaly, and data sources used by the detection. By automating the detections at scale, STARE decreases the number of people required to monitor and decipher all of the various feeds, while increasing the accuracy and delivery of critical intelligence to decision-makers.

Optix was developed by General Atomics’ Commonwealth Computer Research, Inc. (CCRi), a company GA acquired in 2021. It has been deployed in production environments globally, for both commercial and government related use cases. To learn more, check GA-CCRi’s website and https://optix.earth/

Huk’s New Men’s A1A Pro Guide Pant Made By the Pros, Available for Everyone

Huk’s New Men’s A1A Pro Guide Pant Made By the Pros, Available for Everyone

Charleston, SC (July 19, 2022) – Long days on the water call for gear that is up for the adventure, and Huk’s new men’s A1A Pro Guide pants are designed to withstand anything anglers put them through. With input from guides and avid anglers around the country, the men’s A1A Pro Guide pants are packed with serious features for the most challenging days on the water.

“Pants that are tough enough to handle the abuse I put them through and are light enough for wear in the heat didn’t exist until now. The men’s A1A Pro Guide pants design is the best I have ever seen. They were built with a true fisherman in mind,” said Captain Nate, Islamorada, FL.

The men’s A1A Pro Guide pants are designed to be durable without giving up comfort and performance that anglers demand, whether poling a skiff or fighting the tarpon of a lifetime. The pants are made for all-day comfort on the water, constructed of 94% nylon for durability and 6% spandex for stretch and comfort. “The overall durability of these pants is insane. The patch on the side is perfect for poling the skiff when chasing tailing Reds,” said Captain Ervin, Charleston, SC. The abrasion-resistant fabric patch is strategically placed on the side of the pants to withstand the wear and tear of long days manning the push pole.

Functional design elements are evident in six feature-rich pocket designs. The pants have cargo and zippered side pockets with drainage grommets allowing anglers to store their tools and keep them dry. Two zippered rear pockets allow for extra security, and two hand pockets for any additional accessories anglers need to carry. The adjustable hem will eliminate your pants from dragging on the boat or at the dock.

The fabric features a durable water-repellent finish, keeping anglers cool and dry. These pants also feature an ever-adjusting waistband for those who enjoy a long lunch break waiting on the tide to turn. Rounding out the men’s A1A Pro Guide Pant is 50+ UPF for sun protection, a premium zipper fly front, and a gusseted crotch for mobility. Huk listened to their pros, and these A1A Pro Guide pants are the result.

Men’s A1A Pro Guide Pants Features:

  • · 94% Nylon, 6% Spandex
  • · Abrasion-resistant fabric side hits to cut wear and tear while poling the flats
  • · Six pocket design (cargo & zippered side pockets with drainage grommets, two zippered back pockets, two hand pockets)
  • · Adjustable waistband and hem
  • · Zippered fly front

US Marine Corps successfully tests Iron Dome based Air Defense Prototype

IRON_DOME_TEST (002)

US Marine Corps successfully tests Iron Dome based Air Defense Prototype

A major breakthrough for the US Marine Corps (USMC) integration of RAFAEL’s Iron Dome ground launcher and Tamir interceptor missile into Marine Corps’ Medium-Range Intercept Capability (MRIC) Prototype with the USMC G/ATOR Radar and CAC2S Battle Management System.

A live fire test at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico proved:

              1. USMC has Iron Dome defense capabilities

              2. Iron Dome was successfully integrated into USMC Architecture

              3. The system performed exactly as was predicted by a USMC simulation prior to the test itself.

“This demonstration proves that we do now have a relevant capability,” said Don Kelley, program manager for GBAD at PEO Land Systems, immediately following the successful test.

Brigadier General (Res.) Pinhas Yungman, Executive Vice President and Head of RAFAEL’s Air Defense Systems Directorate:

“Once again, RAFAEL’s systems have proven that they are capable of seamless, optimized integration with other defense systems.  The Marines live-fire test demonstrated a successful combination of an Iron Dome ground launcher, Tamir interceptor with the Marines’ radar system and  battle management system.  This is an important and significant message for RAFAEL, for the Marines and the other customers in the United States and in the international market.”

Head of the IMDO in the Ministry of Defense, Mr. Moshe Patel:

“This test has proven the Iron Dome Tamir Interceptor and associated ground components can be integrated quickly and efficiently in any relevant defense architecture and intercept various aerial threats successfully in complex and advanced scenarios. We look forward to further partnerships with the US Armed Forces on Air and Missile Defense.”

GA-ASI TO SUPPLY 8 MQ-9A EXTENDED RANGE UAS FOR USMC

New Marine Corps UAS Will Be Rapidly Deployed to Meet Customer Needs

SAN DIEGO – 17 July 2022 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) was awarded a contract for eight MQ-9A Extended Range (ER) Unmanned Aircraft Systems as part of the ARES Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity (ID/IQ) contract on May 27, 2022. GA-ASI anticipates awards later this year for Ground Control Systems (GCS), spares, and Ground Support Equipment as part of the first increment of the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Unmanned Expeditionary (MUX) Program of Record.

GA-ASI will begin first delivery of aircraft and support equipment this winter to facilitate the fleet standup in late summer 2023 for U.S. Marine Corps’ (USMC) Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron (VMU) 3 located at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The MQ-9A Extended Range (ER) is designed with field-retrofittable capabilities such as wing-borne fuel pods and reinforced landing gear that extends the aircraft’s endurance to more than 30 hours, while further increasing its operational flexibility. It provides long-endurance, persistent surveillance capabilities, with Full-Motion Video and Synthetic Aperture Radar/Moving Target Indicator/Maritime Mode Radar. An extremely reliable aircraft, MQ-9A ER is equipped with a fault-tolerant flight control system and triple redundant avionics system architecture. Attention to Detail: The Key to Finishing AG Composites Best-in-Class Rifle Stocks

Attention to Detail: The Key to Finishing AG Composites

Best-in-Class Rifle Stocks

OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala.  (July18, 2022) — The most successful college basketball coach of all time, UCLA’s John Wooden, once said, “It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.” Such is the philosophy of AG Composites’ highly skilled Stock Finisher, Blake Williams. An extremely difficult job that requires painstaking attention to detail, former U.S. Marine Williams has taken the position to a whole new level.

“My job as the Finish Technician makes me responsible for preparing rifle stocks to be painted and/or camouflaged,” Williams said. “It’s a job that requires a high level of attention to detail. By using a variety of hand tools and approved filler materials, I first look at each stock we produce to identify any blemishes or cosmetic defects. My goal is to repair the defect in a way that it will not be visible and cannot be felt when the stock is completed. The finished stock is then inspected by the quality control team, who will either pass or fail it. Should it fail, the technician and I will address the issues, fix them and turn it back in to be inspected again.”

Williams has been with AG Composites for four years. “I love working here,” Williams said. “We have a great team that is dedicated to making the best quality stocks in the business. The owners take great care of the employees and the company itself.”

Williams has been a shooter since early childhood when he got his first .22. and became a much more avid firearm enthusiast while in the Marines. He became familiar with AG Composites through a fellow Marine when he was working for a local moving company and doing some firearm refinishing and custom work on the side.

“I have always believed in hiring great people then giving them the freedom to do their job without micromanaging them,” said AG Composites owner Matt Tandy. “Blake is a huge asset to  AG Composites. He is dedicated to his work, takes time during his day to teach employees, and is always thinking of ways to improve our product and process. While doing all this, he has fun and is a source of motivation. We are truly glad he is part of the AG team.”

More Information on AG Composites’ complete line of products and how they are produced can be found at www.agcomposites.com.

About AG Composites

The company uses modern design software to create Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and the highest quality carbon fiber, epoxy and paint to make its line of rifle stocks. Every stock is tested with the action, bottom metal and barrel hardware before it ships to the customer. The company is known for delivering its products in weeks, not months. AG Composites’ mission is to be the most responsive reliable and supportive supplier in the advanced composites industry. NSSF Fires Back at Gun Control’s Attempts to Chill First Amendment Rights

July 18, 2022

NSSF Fires Back at Gun Control’s Attempts to Chill First Amendment Rights

NEWTOWN, Conn. — NSSF®, the firearm industry trade association, defended the First Amendment rights of firearm manufacturers in a letter to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine. The letter was in response to several complaints by special-interest gun control groups falsely accusing NSSF members of violating the Federal Trade Commission Act. These attacks are nothing short of well-financed, special-interest gun control groups attempting to limit the First Amendment rights of firearm manufacturers to advertise lawful products.

Letters have been sent the FTC by gun control groups Everytown for Gun Safety, The Brady Campaign, Giffords Law Center and similar special-interest groups.

“These gun control groups are not content in attacking and denying one Constitutional right. They are now bent on attacking another,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “These groups are attempting to abuse the levers of government to deny the right to advertise a lawful product even as they use those same complaints as fundraising tools. This is a disgusting attempt to twist the role of a federal agency as a neutral arbiter to one that uses the weight of federal authority to deny not one, but two Constitutionally-protected rights.

“The NSSF is compelled by our duty to our members and our respect for the Constitution to stand against, and call out, such egregious manipulation of federal regulations by these groups,” Keane added. “Their disdain for the Second Amendment does not give them the right to infringe on the First Amendment rights of our members and others with whom they disagree.”

The FTC is an independent agency of the U.S. government. As such, it must zealously guard against political activists attempting to bend the authority of that office to advance special-interest agendas.

The groups are attempting to sway the FTC to sweep aside Constitutional protections as a “technical obstacle” to do their bidding. They wrongly claim that firearms are not used for self-defense, a claim that is disproven nearly daily in routine media reporting. They denigrate and devalue the importance of law-abiding adults instructing youth on safe and proper firearm handling and use. The groups argue that firearms are dangerous and the FTC should use its role to deprive citizens the right to protect themselves because of this. The fact is that firearms are a unique tool capable of helping individuals protect themselves because it is dangerous to attackers. That argument was settled at the nation’s founding.

Identity of Princess Doe Revealed and a Charge Filed in the 40-Year-Old New Jersey Case on its Anniversary Date

Identity of Princess Doe Revealed and a Charge Filed in the 40-Year-Old New Jersey Case on its Anniversary Date

Innovative Forensic Investigations (IFI) partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), Astrea Forensics™, the New Jersey State Police, and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office to identify the first unidentified decedent entered into the National Crime Information Center.

Arthur Kinlaw (left) is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dawn Olanick, previously known as “Princess Doe”.

Emporia, Va. (July 2022) – On July 15, 1982, a maintenance worker at the Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Blairstown, New Jersey came upon a body. Unlike the other residents of the cemetery, this corpse did not belong here. Blairstown is a small, rural village in the northwest region of New Jersey near the Pennsylvania border. What the Blairstown Police Department now had on their hands was an unidentified female victim that had been exposed to the elements for several days. The decedent was a female aged between 14 – 18, wearing a red tee-shirt and peasant skirt. Any visual identity of the victim would remain impossible since her cause of death was blunt force trauma to the face and head.

Lt. Eric Kranz, the original lead investigator of the Blairstown PD, now retired, had few if any leads to the case that shocked this small, quiet rural town. He utilized every tool, including the media, to gain national attention on the decedent he named “Princess Doe.” The extensive media coverage and an HBO documentary “MISSING” became the impetus for then FBI Director William H. Webster to make Princess Doe the very first unidentified decedent entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

Continued coverage of the Princess Doe case in the media, including “America’s Most Wanted,” and the “Untold Story of Princess Doe” by Christie Leigh Napurano brought in multiple leads, but nothing with sufficient evidence to identify her or her assailant. That is, until 2022.

On the 40th anniversary of the finding of Princess Doe, Warren County Prosecutor, James L. Pfeiffer, Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin, and the New Jersey State Police Superintendent, Colonel Patrick J. Callahan announced the identity of Princess Doe as 17-year old Dawn Olanick from Long Island, New York. In conjunction with the announcement, the Warren County office also charged Arthur Kinlaw with 1st degree murder in the homicide of Dawn Olanick. Arthur Kinlaw, a convicted murderer, is currently serving a twenty-years to life sentence in New York for the murder of a different unidentified woman, found in the East River in 1984. Kinlaw and his wife ran a prostitute ring in the Bronx and it is believed that Kinlaw killed Olanick when she refused to participate in the prostitute ring.

“Science and technology made the impossible possible in this case,” Prosecutor Pfeiffer said.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) partners with law enforcement agencies, providing them with resources from advocates to funding. The NCMEC facilitated the Princess Doe case by providing Astrea Forensics™ with a sample to develop the DNA profile. NCMEC partnered with Innovative Forensic Investigations (IFI), an investigative genetic genealogy firm providing services to law enforcement, for the genetic genealogy. Once IFI received the data report, it took only two-days of intensive genetic genealogy to conclude that Princess Doe was Dawn Olanick, from Long Island, New York. Working with the New Jersey State Police and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office, not only was Princess Doe identified after 40-years, but a suspect has been charged in the case.

“It was an incredible moment when I received a photograph of Dawn. The tragedy of her case turned into hope when I got to see her smile and put a face to someone we have been searching for, for so long,” said Carol Schweitzer, Supervisor Forensic Services National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. “An incredible amount of resources and effort from so many people have poured into her case the past 40 years, it has been a true team effort. It gives us hope that it’s never too late to find resolutions in these cases, tenacity and being receptive to new ideas pays off.”

“Solving an unidentified homicide case, especially one that is 40 years old, takes many critical resources and a willingness to collaborate,” Jennifer Moore, CEO of Innovative Forensic, said. “Working together with the New Jersey State Police, NCMEC, Astrea, and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office, sharing data and resources, we were able to identify Princess Doe. Based upon the teamwork and results, the New Jersey State Police has solved one of its oldest cold cases dating back 40 years on this date, July 15, 1982, and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office has charged an individual believed to be responsible in the homicide of Dawn Olanick.”

17th SPIKE USERS’ CLUB MEETING HELD IN LATVIA

SPIKE LR2_2 (002)

17TH SPIKE USERS’ CLUB MEETING HELD IN LATVIA

July 14, 2022 – Last week, the SPIKE Users’ Club held its annual meeting for the first time since the start of COVID-19 pandemic.

For sixteen consecutive years, the SPIKE Users’ Club Meeting (SUCM) had been held in different host countries around the world; now, after a two-year break due to the pandemic, the meeting was held in Latvia. RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems, the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), and SPIKE Missile Family’s global users came together for a collaborative, face-to-face engagement to strengthen their wider relations and cooperation. Founded in June 2003 by SPIKE user nations, the SUCM has become a unique forum for sharing their practical knowledge and experience using SPIKE missiles, as well as addressing tactical lessons learned from combat scenarios, through maintenance and live-fire trainings

BRIGADIER GENERAL KASPARS ZDANKOVSKIS, Acting Chief of Staff, Latvian Armed Forces

“We were very pleased to host 17th SPIKE User Club in person this year in Latvia, especially after the long COVID break. It is very important that User nations have the possibility to come together, share their experience, challenges and discuss the future. The Users’ conference is an excellent platform for maintaining the nations’ interoperability, enabling the nations to manage joint SPIKE missile stockpiles, joint procurement and mutual support in supplies. SPIKE family systems are the key capability for the Latvian Armed forces and the long-term cooperation with the NSPA and relevant industries is an absolute military requirement.”

TZVI MARMOR, Vice President and Head RAFAEL’s Precision Tactical Weapons Directorate

“The return of the SPIKE Users club is another indication of the relevance of the system especially in the modern security context. It was an honor to again cooperate with our partners and the global customers. We thank all the delegations for coming and particularly the NSPA and our partners in Latvia for their warm hospitality, high level of professionalism and great coordination leading to a successful event.”

This year, SUCM’s 17th meeting was jointly organized by host user-nation Latvia and the NSPA. It included 19 SPIKE User delegations, and observer nations that participated for internal study purposes. During the SUCM, the Latvian Army launched four SPIKE missiles: two SPIKE LR2 missiles were launched from a portable ground launcher, with one of them launched towards a target beyond-line-of-sight at 5.2 km with the use of the target image acquisition capability. Both missiles hit their intended targets (both in IR and day mode).  Additionally, two SPIKE SR shoulder launched fire-and-forget missiles were launched at target at a distance of 1.5km. The innovative SPIKE FIREFLY miniature close combat loitering munition was also demonstrated, extracted from a canister by the maneuvering infantry, in vertical takeoff it engaged targets beyond-line-of-sight. Days before the SUCM, a Latvian Army squad was instructed how to operate the SPIKE FIREFLY and took part in the demonstration. Earlier this year, SPIKE FIREFLY was also demonstrated in the United States at AEWE to US and UK military services among others.

GA-ASI News: GA-ASI Welcomes New SkyGuardian(r) Mission Trainer to FTTC

GA-ASI Welcomes New SkyGuardian® Mission Trainer to FTTC

GA-ASI WELCOMES NEW SKYGUARDIAN® MISSION TRAINER to FTTC

New Simulator from CAE Increases GA-ASI’s Customer Flight Training Capacity

SAN DIEGO – 14 July 2022 – The first MQ-9B SkyGuardian® Mission Trainer has been delivered to the Flight Test and Training Center (FTTC), a facility in Grand Forks, ND owned and operated by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). The new Mission Trainer is designed and delivered by CAE to provide realistic synthetic mission training for both pilot and sensor operator aircrews on the GA-ASI SkyGuardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). The SkyGuardian Mission Trainer will be used to train the initial UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Protector crews at Grand Forks. The RAF, in partnership with GA-ASI, will conduct training at the FTTC to learn how to operate the next generation Protector RPA system. Protector is the RAF’s version of MQ-9B.

“We’re thrilled to get this new mission trainer in place at the FTTC to support our customers’ training needs,” said Dean Gorder, director of GA-ASI’s FTTC. “In addition to our customers, we’ll also use the simulator to train operators for GA-ASI and affiliate companies.”

The introduction of the SkyGuardian Mission Trainer, developed by GA-ASI’s long-time training and simulation partner CAE, increases the FTTC’s capacity by adding another organic simulator to its catalog of offerings, while reducing training costs for both internal and external customers. It features CAE’s high-fidelity sensor simulation, fully interactive tactical environment and Open Geospatial Consortium Common Database architecture for interoperable and networked training capabilities. These state-of-the-art features enable GA-ASI to update its curricula and training via advanced simulation while reducing potential airspace and weather impacts.

“This Mission Trainer allows operators to maintain mission systems proficiency in a realistic and secure environment,” says Lenny Genna, vice president of Mission Systems for CAE Defense & Security. “Leveraging simulation means crews continue effective training while MQ-9B aircraft assets remain mission-ready for deployment.”
