GA-ASI Flies Multiple Missions Using Artificially Intelligent Pilots
GA-ASI FLIES MULTIPLE MISSIONS USING ARTIFICIALLY INTELLIGENT PILOTS
AI Flights Featuring Avenger® Advance CCA Ecosystem
SAN DIEGO – 11 January 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) further advanced its Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) ecosystem by flying three unique missions with artificially intelligent (AI) pilots on an operationally relevant Open Mission System (OMS) software stack. A company-owned Avenger® Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) was paired with “digital twin” aircraft to autonomously conduct Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) multi-objective collaborative combat missions. The flights, which took place on Dec. 14, 2022, from GA-ASI’s Desert Horizons flight operations facility in El Mirage, Calif., demonstrate the company’s commitment to maturing its CCA ecosystem for Autonomous Collaborative Platform (ACP) UAS using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). This provides a new and innovative tool for next-generation military platforms to make decisions under dynamic and uncertain real-world conditions.
The flight used GA-ASI’s novel Reinforcement Learning (RL) architecture built using agile software development methodology and industry-standard tools such as Docker and Kubernetes to develop and validate three deep learning RL algorithms in an operationally relevant environment. RL agents demonstrated single, multi, and hierarchical agent behaviors. The single agent RL model successfully navigated the live plane while dynamically avoiding threats to accomplish its mission. Multi-agent RL models flew a live and virtual Avenger to collaboratively chase a target while avoiding threats. The hierarchical RL agent used sensor information to select courses of action based on its understanding of the world state. This demonstrated the AI pilot’s ability to successfully process and act on live real-time information independently of a human operator to make mission-critical decisions at the speed of relevance.
For the missions, real-time updates were made to flight paths based on fused sensor tracks provided by virtual Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM) models, and RL agent missions were dynamically selected by operators while the plane was airborne, demonstrating live, effective human-machine teaming for autonomy. This live operational data describing AI pilot performance will be fed into GA-ASI’s rapid retaining process for analysis and used to refine future agent performance.
“The concepts demonstrated by these flights set the standard for operationally relevant mission systems capabilities on CCA platforms,” said GA-ASI Senior Director of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood. “The combination of airborne high-performance computing, sensor fusion, human-machine teaming, and AI pilots making decisions at the speed of relevance shows how quickly GA-ASI’s capabilities are maturing as we move to operationalize autonomy for CCAs.”
The team used a government-furnished Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) autonomy engine and the government-standard OMS messaging protocol to enable communication between the RL agents and the LVC system. Utilizing government standards such as OMS will make rapid integration of autonomy for CCAs possible.
In addition, GA-ASI used a General Dynamics Mission Systems’ EMC2 to run the autonomy architecture. EMC2 is an open architecture Multi-Function Processor with multi-level security infrastructure that is used to host the autonomy architecture, demonstrating the ability to bring high-performance computing resources to CCAs to perform quickly tailorable mission sets depending on the operational environment.
This is another in an ongoing series of autonomous flights performed using internal research and development funding to prove out important AI/ML concepts for UAS.

The Hyper Raptor excels in every aspect of performance-inspired design and technology. The Hyper Raptor is not only exceptionally fast, but it proves to be tack-driving accurate as well. Barnett’s new Halo System eliminates cable crossing and cam lean to create perfectly balanced string travel for superior accuracy. Additionally, arrows are held secure with Barnett’s Soft Lok™ Floating Bristle Arrow Retainer System and CNC machined aluminum flight track provides consistency shot after shot.
The Hyper Raptor utilizes a metal-injected molded trigger and TriggerTech™ Frictionless Release Technology (a $200 value). The TriggerTech trigger features a reliable, crisp, 3-pound pull for consistent shots and improved accuracy. This is another example of how Barnett leads the industry in innovation and value. An Anti-Dry Fire (ADF) system and nock sensor are added to ensure the crossbow is loaded correctly. Additionally, the new Rope Hold Roller Ball technology keeps the RCD rope in place as you attach hooks to string for more consistent cocking.
Comfort and customization add the finishing touches to the Hyper Raptor. Hunter-friendly ergonomics are enhanced by multiple features like finger safety reminders above the pass-through forend with Verti-Grip palm rest. An adjustable length-of-pull buttstock and a padded, micro-adjustable cheek-rest ensure a perfect length-of-pull and proper scope-to-eye alignment. Pre-installed string suppressors provide reduced recoil, vibration, and noise during the shot.
Barnett packs even more value to complete the Hyper Raptor package. The crossbow comes outfitted with a premium 4×36 illuminated, multi-reticle scope with flip-up caps. The scope offers precise target acquisition in a full range of ambient light conditions from twilight to high noon. A built-in motion sensor will switch the device automatically on or off, extending battery life up to an astounding 25,000 hours. Also, the battery is placed in a sealed drawer on the side of the device, making it unnecessary to dismount the device and zero it again when changing the battery. The battery drawer can be removed without tools, and the time to change the battery is less than one minute. Also, the windage and elevation turrets offer tactile clicks by turning and adjusting them with a small tool. The user can feel each of the clicks which ensures the adjustments needed for precise zeroing.
Measuring just .90 inches tall x 1.04 inches wide x 1.6 inches long (23×26.5×40.6 mm) and weighing a scant 0.78 oz. (22 grams) – nearly 15 percent less than comparable sights — the GPO Spectra Pistol Dot Sight will mate with virtually any modern semiautomatic handgun, or it comes with a picatinny rail mount for any modular sporting rifle. The polymer lens measures 0.87 x 0.63 inches (22 x 16 mm). It features a black anodized aluminum housing, is fully waterproof, and is powered by a single CR1632 battery.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo to Join NSSF’s 2nd Annual Governors’ Forum at SHOT Show 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, is proud to announce that Nevada’s Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo will join the 2nd Annual Governors’ Forum at SHOT Show® 2023.
NSSF welcomes Gov. Lombardo along with several other governors to speak about the importance of the firearm industry to their states, efforts to attract firearm and ammunition-related businesses, and the benefits of firearm-related businesses to their state economies.
NSSF’s Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show), will take place at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas from Jan. 17-20, 2023. The Governors’ Forum, hosted by NSSF’s Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs and General Counsel, will take place in the Murano Room, 3rd Floor of the Venetian Expo from 1-2 p.m. (Pacific Time), Jan. 18, 2022. The forum is open to industry media and will include questions from attendees. No RSVP is required.
“This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from governors of the importance of the firearm industry and issues important to them and was a resounding success last year. We wanted to create another event to welcome these governors to speak directly with show attendees and industry media,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF SVP & General Counsel. “NSSF has regularly welcomed governors, but this is a truly special chance to gather these governors in one space to speak about the importance of a growing and vibrant firearm industry to their states.”

NSSF Applauds U.S. Rep. Bergman’s FIND Act Introduction in Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, welcomed the introduction of H.R. 53, the Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act, into Congress by U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.). The bill has 55 original co-sponsors. This vital legislation will end the ability of corporate entities to profit from taxpayer-funded federal contracts while discriminating against a Constitutionally-protected industry at the same time.
“This legislation will help put an end to ‘woke’ corporations profiting from taxpayer-funded contracts while denying those same taxpayers access to their Second Amendment rights by using their financial might to deny essential services to members of the firearm industry,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Corporations, in particular financial institutions, have been improperly dictating public policies from boardrooms that throttle Constitutionally-protected firearm businesses. The entire firearm industry thanks Congressman Bergman for his leadership to ensure fairness in business, reasserting Congress’s role in setting public policy and ensuring the federal government isn’t picking winners and losers in the marketplace based on politics. This legislation protects the ability of a lawful industry to compete for services without artificial and agenda-driven barriers.”
Congressman Bergman’s FIND Act does not tell companies with whom they must do business. However, just as companies can choose who they wish to do business with, so can the government when it spends taxpayer money. This bill ensures corporations cannot benefit from contracts and subcontracts funded by taxpayers only to use their financial strength to unfairly discriminate against the firearm industry. For far too long, corporations have engaged in “boardroom gun control” to force firearm businesses to adopt measures that would restrict Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Corporations are free to hold these anti-Second Amendment policies if they choose but would forfeit access to lucrative federal contracts.
Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed a similar law in Texas in 2021 and similar legislation is being considered in other state capitols. Congressman Bergman’s legislation would bring those same fair business protections to the federal government to ensure corporate entities are not forcing policies that deny American civil liberties through the benefit of taxpayer-funded federal contracts.

An aggressive barricade stop establishes a solid shooting platform in any position. Enhanced ergonomics include an angled pistol grip, built-in thumb shelf, QD cups, and an ambidextrous magazine release, providing a user-friendly shooting experience.
The CBX rifle system features a flat-bottom receiver—a design that reduces flex and improves accuracy. Its 60° bolt throw allows for faster cycling times and increased optic compatibility, while its ergonomic 2-position tang safety is intuitive and quick to operate. A user-adjustable (2.5-5lb), crisp trigger allows a customizable shooter feel.
Colt optimized the CBX’s carbon steel, button-rifled barrel’s length for ballistic performance. The 6.5 Creedmoor sports a 26-inch barrel, while the .308 Win uses a 24-inch barrel, and both feature 5/8-24 UNEF threaded muzzles with thread protectors. A black nitride treatment protects barrels from corrosion while providing a tactical matte finish.
Other features included with the CBX rifle system are a 1-piece Picatinny rail with Rem700 compatible scope mounts and a detachable 5-round Magpul AICS magazine.

The right cooperation makes the difference
High Eye is a company that specializes in manufacturing the Airboxer VTOL UAV, a heavy-fuel driven (Jet A-1) unmanned helicopter system for both civilian and military use. In 2021, it introduced the Airboxer, a long-range drone with a single three-bladed rotor that quickly gained popularity in the market due to its small size, lightweight design, and ability to function in extreme conditions.
The Airboxer is a multifunctional ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) platform that is able to access locations that are difficult for other systems to reach. It has an endurance of 3 to 4 hours and can carry a payload of up to 7 kilograms, with a maximum take-off weight of 32 kilograms. The NATO STANAG 4738-compliant platform can be adapted to a variety of mission requirements or applications and can be easily integrated into challenging environments. Some potential uses for the Airboxer include coastal patrol and environmental control in the maritime domain, disaster management and border protection in the security and safety domain, and remote monitoring and power line inspection in the research and inspection domain.
To ensure the reliable transmission of media, the Airboxer utilizes plug-in connection systems from ODU, a leading international supplier of connectors. Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Airboxer is a top priority for High Eye and its customers.
Interview with Joost de Ruiter, CEO and owner of High Eye
1. High Eye started with model helicopters in 1998 and over time has developed into a specialist for unmanned helicopters. What new technical challenges did you have to overcome and new regulations did you have to comply with?
Some of the key challenges we have encountered include:
Developing reliable and safe control systems for the Airboxer VTOL UAV. Ensuring that the aircraft can be safely and accurately controlled is a critical part of our work, and we have had to design and test a variety of control systems to achieve the desired level of performance.
Developing lightweight and durable aircraft structures. One of the key requirements for any unmanned aircraft is that it is as lightweight as possible, to maximize its payload capacity and extend its range. At the same time, the aircraft must be strong enough to withstand the stresses of flight. Finding the right balance between these competing demands while complying to NATO norms, such as STANAG 4738, has been a major technical challenge for us.
2. And which new regulations did you have to comply with?
The regulatory landscape in the unmanned aircraft industry is complex and can be challenging to navigate. However, by staying up to date on the latest rules and guidelines, and by continuously adapting and innovating, High Eye could ensure that we are able to operate safely and effectively. We are working to obtain the Light UAS Operator Certificate (LUC), which is required for drone operations within the EU. This certificate allows us to assess the risks of our flights based on strict guidelines set by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
3. The Airboxer was developed over a period of more than 8 years and tested under the most extreme conditions on several continents. What were your requirements for the Airboxer?
Mostly reliability and durability: Unmanned aircrafts are often used in a variety of challenging environments, and it is important that they are able to operate reliably and withstand the stresses of flight. The Airboxer is not an exception here – it had to be reliable and durable even when flying at the Arctic Circle in Canada, in the desert of Abu Dhabi or above the sea in South Korea.
4. What technical challenges do you face from your customers?
Designing and integrating payloads (cameras, sensors, etc.) onto the Airboxer VTOL UAV. Our aircraft is often used for a variety of applications, and we had to design and integrate a range of payloads to meet the needs of our customers. This has required us to develop advanced techniques for integrating cameras, sensors, and other payloads onto the aircraft, while minimizing their impact on the aircraft’s weight and performance.
5. You have been working with ODU for years. In which areas are the plug-in connection systems used?
We are using the ODU AMC® connector for our ground control system as those are highly respected connectors that are widely used on various Dismounted Soldier Systems. We appreciate its easy handling and robust break-away design, making it ideal for military and security power applications. This connector is designed to withstand rugged conditions and has been tested to meet MIL-STD-810H standards. The GCS (Ground Control Station) module is the central hub for all ground control equipment and is responsible for operating the flight control software and managing all telemetry communication. It communicates with the Airboxer, antenna systems, and pilot control unit using Ethernet.
6. What requirements do you have for the connector systems and how could it be implemented?
Our company is dedicated to producing high-quality VTOL UAVs. The requirements for connectors are the same: they need to be able to withstand even the most extreme environments. Whether it’s scorching heat or frigid cold, our ground control station is designed to function with reliability. We understand the importance of dependability in these types of situations, and we go above and beyond to ensure that our products meet and exceed the end-user expectations.
7. What distinguishes your cooperation?
The cooperation between High Eye and ODU is marked by several key features that set it apart. One of the main distinguishing factors is the focus on safety and reliability. Both companies are dedicated to manufacture products that are safe and efficient to use.
Another key aspect of the collaboration between High Eye and ODU is the ability to customize and tailor solutions to meet the specific needs of their customers. Whether it’s adapting connectors to fit specific requirements or developing bespoke payload capabilities, both companies are committed to provide solutions that are tailored to the unique needs of each client.
However, I also think that both of our companies are constantly looking for ways to push the boundaries of what is possible and to develop new technologies that will help our customers achieve their goals.
