And a 2019 study published in the medical journal BMJ (https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/fried-food-linked-to-heightened-risk-of-death-among-older-us-women/), showed that women eating one or more servings of fried food a day had an 8 percent higher risk of death from all causes as well as heart-related death compared with those who did not eat fried food. More specifically, eating fried chicken had a 13 percent greater risk of death and 12 percent increased risk of a heart-related death. For fried fish, the rise in risk of death and heart-related death was 7-13 percent, respectively.

Un-Fried Chicken & Potatoes
Makes 4 Servings

  • 4 Thin Sliced Skinless Chicken Cutlets
  • 1-1/2 lb. Potatoes
  • 1/2 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 4-1/2 TBSP Hi Mountain Fiesta Salsa seasoning (divided)
  • 8 TBSP Mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp (or more to taste) Hi Mountain Pineapple Sriracha seasoning
  • 2 TBSP butter 0r Cooking Oil


Adjust oven rack to top position and preheat oven to 425°. Wash and dry potatoes. Cut potatoes into 1/2-inch thick wedges. Place 2 tbsp butter in a small microwave-safe bowl, microwave until melted, 30 seconds. Stir in panko, parmesan cheese, half the Fiesta Salsa seasoning (2 ¼ tbsp – you will use the rest in next step).
Toss potatoes on baking sheet with a large drizzle of oil and remaining Fiesta Salsa seasoning. Roast on top rack for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, pat chicken dry with paper towel. Place on a plate, spread tops of chicken with 1 tsp mayonnaise each (you’ll use remaining later). Mound with panko mixture, pressing firmly to adhere (do not coat undersides). Carefully place on separate baking sheet and roast on middle rack until potatoes are golden brown and tender and chicken is cooked through, 15-20 minutes more.
In a second bowl, combine remaining mayonnaise with Pineapple Sriracha seasoning to taste for dipping.

Completing Form 4473 2023 Edition SHOT University Online Training Live Now

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, is pleased to announce that the training series titled “Completion of the ATF Form 4473 2023 Edition” is now available through the SHOT UniversityTM Online education center. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) revised the form in December 2022 to reflect new statutory requirements implemented due to the enactment of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the NICS Denial Notification Act and the ATF Final Rule 2021R-05F.

This training series is now live and reviews critical elements of the new form’s use and purpose, as well as tips for identifying and correcting common errors made by both buyers and sellers. The suite is composed of three, easy-to-digest segments:

· Module 1: Overview of Form 4473

· Module 2: Completing Form 4473, Sections A-B

· Module 3: Completing Form 4473, Sections C-E

All FFL counter salespeople, compliance officers, records keepers and license holders should consider these SHOT University Online courses to be vital training to enhance FFL training and help reduce errors when using the new form. Updated 4473 overlay forms will also be available in a couple weeks, and NSSF encourages all FFLs not using digital solutions to order by logging in to the online store. New overlay orders are $15 for members, $30 for non-members and ship with a “Sweat the Details” pamphlet for sales team to refer to.

FFLs can order the December 2022 edition of the Form 4473 through the ATF Distribution Center, and the form is available for download at www.atf.gov. Use of the December 2022 edition is mandatory beginning April 1, 2023. At that time, use of the May 2020 edition must be discontinued. The new Form 4473 and continuation sheets are available for order in both English and Spanish here.

SHOT University Online and the “Completing the Form 4473 2023 Edition” training series is available only to NSSF members and is offered free as part of NSSF’s member benefits. GA-ASI to Deliver Three Aircraft to First U.S. Customer

SAN DIEGO – 06 March 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. is proud to announce a new contract with U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) to provide three MQ-9B SkyGuardian® remotely piloted aircraft systems to its first U.S. customer.

AFSOC’s acquisition of MQ-9B builds on more than 20 years as a GA-ASI partner and more than 14 years flying the MQ-9A Reaper, operating more than 40 aircraft in harsh environments around the world.

MQ-9B will feature a key role in developing AFSOC’s new Adaptive Airborne Enterprise (A2E) concept, which envisions AFSOC projecting air power for special operations forces from beyond the horizon, using a family of large UAS and expendable, small UAS from permissive to denied environments.

“We’re very excited to continue our great partnership with AFSOC well into the future,” said David R. Alexander, president of GA-ASI. “MQ-9B is the ideal platform for inserting air-launched effects into potentially hostile environments. The MQ-9B’s combination of range, endurance, reduced manpower footprint, and overall flexibility will make it a true centerpiece of AFSOC’s future family of advanced UAS systems.”

MQ-9B represents the next generation of UAS, having demonstrated airborne endurance of more than 40 hours in certain configurations, automatic takeoffs and landings under SATCOM-only control, as well as a GA-ASI-developed Detect and Avoid System, among other upgrades. Its development is the result of a company-funded effort to deliver a UAS that can meet the stringent airworthiness certification requirements of various global military and civil authorities.

MQ-9B has garnered significant interest from customers throughout the world. After the UK Ministry of Defence selected MQ-9B SkyGuardian for its upcoming Protector program, the Belgian Ministry of Defense signed a contract for SkyGuardian. The Japan Coast Guard is currently operating MQ-9B in the SeaGuardian® configuration, which the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) also recently selected for its Medium-Altitude, Long-Endurance (MALE) RPAS Trial Operation Project beginning in April.

Chambered in 300 Blackout, the BRN-180SH has 10.5” barrel with 5/8-24 muzzle threads, and a gas system with three settings –unsuppressed, suppressed, and off.

The BRN-180SH retails for $999.

With the gas system turned completely off, the upper is converted into “single shot” mode, virtually eliminating sound produced by gases escaping through the ejection port or by the bolt carrier group cycling.

When fired with a suppressor attached and the gas system turned off, the BRN-180SH in single-shot is even more quiet than a BRN-180S.

The BRN-180SH comes with an adjustable charging handle that can be turned downward to help transform the upper into a straight-pull action, allowing for fast follow-up shots when set for the quietest possible operation.

Selected by DARPA to Continue With Phase 2 of Program Development

SAN DIEGO – 06 March 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is pleased to continue supporting the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) LongShot program. LongShot changes the paradigm of air combat operations by demonstrating an unmanned air-launched vehicle capable of employing air-to-air weapons.

Current air superiority concepts rely on advanced manned fighter aircraft to provide a penetrating counter air capability to effectively deliver weapons. It is envisioned that LongShot will increase the survivability of manned platforms by allowing them to be at standoff ranges far away from enemy threats, while an air-launched LongShot unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) efficiently “closes the gap” to take more effective missile shots.

After a successful Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in February 2022 at the end of Phase 1, GA-ASI was selected by DARPA to continue into Phase 2 in March 2022. During Phase 2, detailed designs are being completed and ground tests conducted to decrease program risk.

A key test event completed early in Phase 2 was multi-body wind tunnel test, characterizing the LongShot air vehicle and air-to-air weapon separation. Critical Design Review (CDR) for the program is planned for early 2023, which will complete the Phase 2 portion of the program. GA-ASI is currently generating a proposal response for the third phase of the program.

“GA-ASI is committed to the successful flight demonstration of the LongShot air vehicle,” said GA-ASI Senior Director of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood.

Upcoming Phase 2 ground tests will demonstrate the viability of key subsystems. Phase 3 would initiate the prototype manufacturing and flight testing phase of the program. Flight testing would begin in 2024.

This year’s event, which will be held in Charleroi, Belgium, near Brussels, will again bring together Belgian businesses and aerospace industry leaders. But this year’s event will grow to include more companies and a broader base of technologies that will vie for capital investment. Joining GA-ASI this year will be Lockheed Martin Ventures and Belgium-based technology facilitator A6K.

“We want to build on our successful Blue Magic concept to foster a collaborative environment for technology ideation and add even greater value to our suite of products and to advance our thrust towards information dominance,” said Brad Lunn, Managing Director-Strategic Finance at GA-ASI. “For this year’s event, we will broaden our concept by bringing in additional partners and ideation space. (GA-ASI) has established a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with its longtime partner Conflux Technology. The new MOU, signed this week at the AVALON 2023 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defense Exposition, is the culmination of several years of collaborative work between GA-ASI and Conflux to build a flight-qualified Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger (FOHE) for GA-ASI platforms.

“We continue to work closely with Conflux on the design and manufacture of FOHE for our aircraft,” said Ken Loving, GA-ASI Regional Vice President for Indo-Pacific. “Through this new MOU, we will establish a clear path to production for the heat exchanger components used by multiple GA-ASI production lines.”

Are We Full of Hot Air?

Chinese-spy-balloon-was-200-feet-tall-with-payload-over-750x375 -1It’s been a while since we’ve had a shoot the shit, so I thought I’d have one on the Chinese Spy Balloon incident because the media has doon such a poor job of covering the event. Because some readers may be unfamiliar with the concept of a shoot the shit, I will present a brief introduction.

A shoot the shit is a social interaction during which any topic can be discussed, participants don’t need to know anything about the subject being discussed, they are free to make any unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. Some will view it as a therapy session where you don’t need to pay $150+ per hour to a jackass who majored in psychology so they could understand themselves. OK, let’s get started.

The Chinese Spy Balloon incident is important for two reasons, our inability to detect the balloon and intelligence gathering. I’ll start with intelligence gathering.

Electronic Intelligence, otherwise known as ELINT, is divided into two disciplines: Communications Intelligence or COMINT and Signal Intelligence or SIGINT. COMINT is a discipline that focuses on collecting communications activity normally conducted in the following frequency spectrums: VLF (Very Low Frequency), HF (High Frequency), VHF (consists of two channels: LOW VHF and HIGH VHF) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency). SIGINT is the discipline that collects signals like telemetry and radar parameters operating in the frequency spectrum ranging from UHF to Ku bands and higher.

How is COMINT used? By collecting unencrypted communications intelligence, the entity can; for example, listen in on conversations between Command and Control and Units operating on the ground. In the case of encrypted communications, by determining operating frequencies and identifying the source and location of those transmissions, the entity can jam those frequencies and/or target the source using lock on signal weapons.

How is SIGINT used? Let’s talk about radars for example. A radar has several electronic characteristics: pulse width, pulse repetition rate, operating frequency, scan type, and scan rates. These discreet parameters are no different than your biometric template, and in an era of Artificial Intelligence and software defined transmitters, approaching enemy aircraft could successfully emulate a friendly aircraft. Continuing, if an entity can collect the SIGINT of shipborne radars and establish a visual image, the entity can identify specific ships. This can be used in a number of ways; for example, if the enemy knows that a specific ship is assigned to a battle group then they can assume that the group is also in the area without detecting the battle group.

The DOD hasn’t released details on the balloon capabilities but at its altitude of 65,000 feet you can assume they were also collecting satellite communications as well as terrestrial imaging. So, this event is a serious matter; however, as troubling as this is, the additional three balloons are even more troubling. So, let’s talk about airspace.

Airspace | Federal Aviation Administration

The United States airspace is defined by the FAA and each class has specific requirements and control with exception of Glass G airspace which is uncontrolled. Operating any aircraft type in all controlled airspace requires FAA and ATC permission.

Class A airspace starts at 18,000 feet MSL (mean sea level) and extends to FL (Flight Level) 600 which is shorthand for 60,000 feet MSL. This space is used by approximately 45,000 commercial flights per day. Class E airspace is directly below Class A space and starts at 10,000 feet MSL and extends to 17,999 feet MSL. Commercial flights use Class E airspace as they transition into Class A space. To operate in both Class A and Class E space ALL aircraft must have Air Traffic Control permission, be under instrument flight rules, have constant communications with ATC and be equipped with a transponder that provides Air Traffic Control with position, course, altitude, and speed over the ground data.

The map above shows the approximate positions and altitudes of the other three unknown objects detected and shot down, all were operating in Class A airspace, and I can only assume that ATC had no knowledge of their presence.

Next, imagine you’re on a night flight from N.Y.C to L.A. doing 435 m.p.h. over the ground when your aircraft strikes a “small car sized object” at 37,000 feet. If the balloon gets sucked into an engine intake, or equally problematic, wraps around the tail section or wing impacting control surfaces so they can’t be operated! You can kiss your ass goodbye!

Here’s my question to you. Assuming, they were innocent balloons, what the fuck were they doing in Class A airspace? And, to the media, did the FAA have knowledge of these objects, why isn’t this being investigated to determine origins as well as compliance with FAA regulations. The graphic below is what reputable balloonist organizations publish to their members.

During the early stages of what would become the U.S. Army’s FTUAS program, AeroVironment’s JUMP 20 demonstrated superior competitive performance and was awarded the FTUAS Increment 1 contract to develop a prototype system to field to one Brigade Combat Team (BCT). Its success throughout the demonstrations led to AeroVironment’s contract award for FTUAS Increment 0, in which the U.S. Army fielded the JUMP 20 into an additional Army BCT within the United States Army Europe. There’s no need to be shy about batoning the Bear through seasoned hardwood in the absence of an axe. The added 90-degree spine scrapes tinder and a ferro rod with authority. And it peels carrots and spuds for real camp cooking.

Comfort first. If you are apprehensive about knives with small handles, this is the one for YOU. A nearly 5-inch handle offers plenty of room for extra-large and gloved hands. The oval cross-sectioned accommodates anyone worried about hot spots from sharp angles and finger grooves. For a secure textured grip, carry The Bear proudly sporting black or green burlap micarta, or keep it natural with red oak scales.

As a change of pace, Bear Forest Knives chose leather pants to compliment the essence of The Bear. The illustrious brown leather sheath is made by JRE Industries and includes a Dangler & Ferro Loop. Like The Bear, JRE Industries is made in the USA.

GA-ASI ESTABLISHES NEW COLLABORATION AGREEMENT WITH LEIDOS IN AUSTRALIA

Represents a Continuation of Business Relationship With Cobham Australia

SAN DIEGO – 01 March 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and Leidos have agreed to continue the successful business relationship previously held between GA-ASI and Cobham Australia. With Leidos’ acquisition of the Cobham Special Mission business in October 2022, Leidos has now assumed the role of GA-ASI’s primary Australian industry collaborator for defense and security business.

The arrangement will support discussions relating to a Defence Armed Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, and the Australian Border Force future crewed/uncrewed aircraft system under the Civil Maritime Capability Program.

Discussions are also underway between Leidos and GA-ASI for cooperation on further defence projects in Australia and opportunities in the U.S.

“GA-ASI is delighted to establish a collaboration agreement with Leidos that continues the successful business relationship previously held with Cobham since 2006,” said Ken Loving, GA-ASI regional vice president for Indo-Pacific. “The broader and deeper capabilities that Leidos brings to the relationship, including its impressive capability within Australia, combined with GA-ASI’s substantial global experience in remotely piloted and autonomous aircraft systems, will provide an impressive capability for Australia’s future defence and security needs.”
