Brownells Unveils BRN-180SH — Newest Addition To The BRN-180 Line

Brownells New BRN-180SH Upper Optimized for Suppressor Use

GRINNELL, Iowa (March 6, 2023) – Brownells unveiled the BRN-180SH complete upper – the newest addition to the popular BRN-180 line – announcing it at the IWA Outdoor Classics show in Nuremberg, Germany.

Chambered in 300 Blackout, the BRN-180SH has 10.5” barrel with 5/8-24 muzzle threads, and a gas system with three settings –unsuppressed, suppressed, and off.

The BRN-180SH retails for $999.

With the gas system turned completely off, the upper is converted into “single shot” mode, virtually eliminating sound produced by gases escaping through the ejection port or by the bolt carrier group cycling.

When fired with a suppressor attached and the gas system turned off, the BRN-180SH in single-shot is even more quiet than a BRN-180S.

The BRN-180SH comes with an adjustable charging handle that can be turned downward to help transform the upper into a straight-pull action, allowing for fast follow-up shots when set for the quietest possible operation.

The upper can be quickly converted back to unsuppressed shooting with a simple twist of the gas adjustment and by turning the charging handle back to its upward position.

Like the rest of the BRN-180 line of uppers, the BRN-180SH fits onto any standard AR-15 or BRN-180 lower, and requires no buffer tube assembly. It readily operates with a folding stock, or no stock at all.

GA-ASI CONTINUES LONGSHOT SUPPORT

Selected by DARPA to Continue With Phase 2 of Program Development

SAN DIEGO – 06 March 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is pleased to continue supporting the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) LongShot program. LongShot changes the paradigm of air combat operations by demonstrating an unmanned air-launched vehicle capable of employing air-to-air weapons.

Current air superiority concepts rely on advanced manned fighter aircraft to provide a penetrating counter air capability to effectively deliver weapons. It is envisioned that LongShot will increase the survivability of manned platforms by allowing them to be at standoff ranges far away from enemy threats, while an air-launched LongShot unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) efficiently “closes the gap” to take more effective missile shots.

After a successful Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in February 2022 at the end of Phase 1, GA-ASI was selected by DARPA to continue into Phase 2 in March 2022. During Phase 2, detailed designs are being completed and ground tests conducted to decrease program risk.

A key test event completed early in Phase 2 was multi-body wind tunnel test, characterizing the LongShot air vehicle and air-to-air weapon separation. Critical Design Review (CDR) for the program is planned for early 2023, which will complete the Phase 2 portion of the program. GA-ASI is currently generating a proposal response for the third phase of the program.

“GA-ASI is committed to the successful flight demonstration of the LongShot air vehicle,” said GA-ASI Senior Director of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood.

Upcoming Phase 2 ground tests will demonstrate the viability of key subsystems. Phase 3 would initiate the prototype manufacturing and flight testing phase of the program. Flight testing would begin in 2024.

SAN DIEGO – 02 March 2023 – On May 10, 2023, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) will host the latest iteration of its “Blue Magic Belgium” event. This year’s event, which will be held in Charleroi, Belgium, near Brussels, will again bring together Belgian businesses and aerospace industry leaders. But this year’s event will grow to include more companies and a broader base of technologies that will vie for capital investment. Joining GA-ASI this year will be Lockheed Martin Ventures and Belgium-based technology facilitator A6K.

“We want to build on our successful Blue Magic concept to foster a collaborative environment for technology ideation and add even greater value to our suite of products and to advance our thrust towards information dominance,” said Brad Lunn, Managing Director-Strategic Finance at GA-ASI. “For this year’s event, we will broaden our concept by bringing in additional partners and ideation space. We will hear technology pitches, a lively panel discussion and host a networking event where participants can meet with other high-tech businesses and leaders to see if their capabilities can be leveraged in new and useful ways.”

Areas of focus for Blue Magic Belgium 2023 will be Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Autonomy, Advanced Materials, Sensors, Advanced Manufacturing and Space.

GA-ASI held its first Blue Magic Belgium event in 2019, with subsequent events held in 2020 and 2021. Since the inception of BMB, GA-ASI has commenced work with a broad range of Belgian businesses, including AeroSimulators Group; Airobot; ALX Systems; Coexpair; DronePort; Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division; ScioTeq; SABCA; Thales Belgium; and ST Engineering. In 2020, the Belgian Ministry of Defense announced that it will acquire GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian® Remotely Piloted Aircraft.

(GA-ASI) has established a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with its longtime partner Conflux Technology. The new MOU, signed this week at the AVALON 2023 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defense Exposition, is the culmination of several years of collaborative work between GA-ASI and Conflux to build a flight-qualified Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger (FOHE) for GA-ASI platforms.

Are We Full of Hot Air?

It’s been a while since we’ve had a shoot the shit, so I thought I’d have one on the Chinese Spy Balloon incident because the media has doon such a poor job of covering the event. Because some readers may be unfamiliar with the concept of a shoot the shit, I will present a brief introduction.

A shoot the shit is a social interaction during which any topic can be discussed, participants don’t need to know anything about the subject being discussed, they are free to make any unsupported comments, use uncensored profanity, insult anyone they wish or change the subject altogether. Some will view it as a therapy session where you don’t need to pay $150+ per hour to a jackass who majored in psychology so they could understand themselves. OK, let’s get started.

The Chinese Spy Balloon incident is important for two reasons, our inability to detect the balloon and intelligence gathering. I’ll start with intelligence gathering.

Electronic Intelligence, otherwise known as ELINT, is divided into two disciplines: Communications Intelligence or COMINT and Signal Intelligence or SIGINT. COMINT is a discipline that focuses on collecting communications activity normally conducted in the following frequency spectrums: VLF (Very Low Frequency), HF (High Frequency), VHF (consists of two channels: LOW VHF and HIGH VHF) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency). SIGINT is the discipline that collects signals like telemetry and radar parameters operating in the frequency spectrum ranging from UHF to Ku bands and higher.

How is COMINT used? By collecting unencrypted communications intelligence, the entity can; for example, listen in on conversations between Command and Control and Units operating on the ground. In the case of encrypted communications, by determining operating frequencies and identifying the source and location of those transmissions, the entity can jam those frequencies and/or target the source using lock on signal weapons.

How is SIGINT used? Let’s talk about radars for example. A radar has several electronic characteristics: pulse width, pulse repetition rate, operating frequency, scan type, and scan rates. These discreet parameters are no different than your biometric template, and in an era of Artificial Intelligence and software defined transmitters, approaching enemy aircraft could successfully emulate a friendly aircraft. Continuing, if an entity can collect the SIGINT of shipborne radars and establish a visual image, the entity can identify specific ships. This can be used in a number of ways; for example, if the enemy knows that a specific ship is assigned to a battle group then they can assume that the group is also in the area without detecting the battle group.

The DOD hasn’t released details on the balloon capabilities but at its altitude of 65,000 feet you can assume they were also collecting satellite communications as well as terrestrial imaging. So, this event is a serious matter; however, as troubling as this is, the additional three balloons are even more troubling. So, let’s talk about airspace.

Airspace | Federal Aviation Administration

The United States airspace is defined by the FAA and each class has specific requirements and control with exception of Glass G airspace which is uncontrolled. Operating any aircraft type in all controlled airspace requires FAA and ATC permission.

Class A airspace starts at 18,000 feet MSL (mean sea level) and extends to FL (Flight Level) 600 which is shorthand for 60,000 feet MSL. This space is used by approximately 45,000 commercial flights per day. Class E airspace is directly below Class A space and starts at 10,000 feet MSL and extends to 17,999 feet MSL. Commercial flights use Class E airspace as they transition into Class A space. To operate in both Class A and Class E space ALL aircraft must have Air Traffic Control permission, be under instrument flight rules, have constant communications with ATC and be equipped with a transponder that provides Air Traffic Control with position, course, altitude, and speed over the ground data.

The map above shows the approximate positions and altitudes of the other three unknown objects detected and shot down, all were operating in Class A airspace, and I can only assume that ATC had no knowledge of their presence.

Next, imagine you’re on a night flight from N.Y.C to L.A. doing 435 m.p.h. over the ground when your aircraft strikes a “small car sized object” at 37,000 feet. If the balloon gets sucked into an engine intake, or equally problematic, wraps around the tail section or wing impacting control surfaces so they can’t be operated! You can kiss your ass goodbye!

Here’s my question to you. Assuming, they were innocent balloons, what the fuck were they doing in Class A airspace? And, to the media, did the FAA have knowledge of these objects, why isn’t this being investigated to determine origins as well as compliance with FAA regulations. All four of these events have profound consequences and should not be dismissed or taken lightly, and if I’ve rekindled an interest with this shoot the shit, contact your Congressional representative, and ask they investigate the matter.

ARLINGTON, Va., March 1, 2023 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), a global leader in intelligent, multi-domain robotic systems, today announced it was selected by the United States Army on Feb. 28, 2023, to move forward in the Future Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (FTUAS) program.

AeroVironment’s Jump 20 will compete with several other vendors in the FTUAS Increment 2 multi-phased effort which will allow the Army to select the best system for its needs. Ultimately, FTUAS Increment 2 aircraft will be fielded to Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) throughout the Army, replacing the long-serving RQ-7B Shadow UAS.

SAN DIEGO – 01 March 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and Leidos have agreed to continue the successful business relationship previously held between GA-ASI and Cobham Australia. With Leidos’ acquisition of the Cobham Special Mission business in October 2022, Leidos has now assumed the role of GA-ASI’s primary Australian industry collaborator for defense and security business.

The arrangement will support discussions relating to a Defence Armed Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, and the Australian Border Force future crewed/uncrewed aircraft system under the Civil Maritime Capability Program.

Discussions are also underway between Leidos and GA-ASI for cooperation on further defence projects in Australia and opportunities in the U.S.

SIG SAUER Announces the Commercial Introduction of the MCX-SPEAR Rifle – The Next Generation Has Arrived

NEWINGTON, N.H., (February 28, 2023) – SIG SAUER is pleased to introduce the MCX-SPEAR, the civilian version of the U.S. Army’s new XM7 rifle chosen for the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) program. The MCX-SPEAR is available in 7.62 NATO and 6.5 Creedmoor and coming soon in 277 SIG Fury.

“The SIG SAUER-MCX family of rifles has become synonymous with innovative engineering and premium quality in a reliable and proven carbine.” said Tom Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, Commercial Sales. “The next generation has arrived with the new MCX-SPEAR, offering enhanced AR-10 capabilities in the MCX platform for the first time on the commercial market.”

The MCX-SPEAR is an adaptable multi-caliber rifle (277 SIG FURY, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7.62 NATO) featuring rear and side non-reciprocating charging handles, a 6-position folding Magpul SL-M stock, integrated stainless steel QD mounts on the lower receiver and handguard, fully ambidextrous fire controls, including safety, bolt-catch, and magazine release, 2-stage Matchlite Duo trigger, 2-position adjustable gas valve, a lightened free-float M-LOK™ handguard with a full-length picatinny rail, and user-interchangeable barrel for easy caliber conversion. The MCX-SPEAR ships with (1) 20-round magazine.
