Mojave Demonstrates Takeoff and Landing Versatility on Unimproved Surface

SAN DIEGO – 03 August 2023 – On August 1, 2023, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) completed multiple successful takeoffs and landings with its Mojave Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) on a dirt strip near El Mirage, Calif.

The ability to take off and land on unimproved surfaces demonstrates Mojave’s departure from traditional fixed-wing aircraft’s dependance on prepared runways. This new capability provides greater versatility and allows the aircraft to operate in areas previously deemed unsuitable for UAS operations.

“Being able to execute missions in austere locations with runway independence opens the operational envelope for commanders across all services and geographic locations,” said GA-ASI President David R. Alexander. “Mojave can do this while retaining significant advantages in endurance and persistence over Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) and manned aircraft.”

The flight tests were the first-ever Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) on a dirt surface for Mojave. Takeoffs were performed in as little as 586 feet; and short landings were completed in as little as 335 feet. The tests were primarily focused on gathering terrain feedback using Mojave, not achieving the shortest distances possible.

Tracing its lineage from the MQ-1C Gray Eagle and MQ-9 Reaper, Mojave is a technical demonstrator with STOL capability, making it a versatile expeditionary UAS. Adhering to Modular Open System Approach (MOSA) principles, Mojave leverages the modernized avionics, data links, sensor integration, and laptop ground control station of GA-ASI’s Gray Eagle 25M program. These features – along with Mojave’s enlarged wings with high-lift devices, combat-proven 450-HP turbine engine, and ruggedized landing gear – make it ideal for semi-improved surfaces with a small ground support footprint.

Mojave provides options for forward-basing operations without the need for typical airport runways or infrastructure, so it can be rapidly deployed from and recovered to non-traditional discrete locations. To extend operational reach, Mojave can fit into a C-130 and be rapidly assembled and employed. These innovations make Mojave the perfect UAS to perform Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition (RSTA), attack, and contested logistics support missions.

Designed to be rapidly deployable and expeditionary, Mojave’s tailored features include a ruggedized airframe that enables operations in austere conditions and weatherization that enables flight in wider environmental windows. Robust wing storage means it can carry up to 16 Hellfire or equivalent missiles, assorted munitions, Launched Effects (LEs), or logistical resupply pods. Mojave can provide greater operational flexibility while still being equipped with a multi-sensor suite that includes Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR), Synthetic Aperture Radar/Ground Moving Target Indicator (SAR/GMTI), Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) to support land or maritime missions throughout Joint All-Domain Operations (JADO).

Infantry personnel of the British Army will soon receive a cutting-edge weapon sight that will give them a tactical advantage against uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), according to a press release from Defense Equipment & Support (DE&S), the independent procurement agency of the Ministry of Defense.

The SmartShooter SMASH Smart Weapon Sight Fire Control System will enable dismounted personnel to target micro and mini UAVs with a high success probability.

This Counter-Small Uncrewed Air Systems (C-sUAS) capability will initially be installed on the SA80 A3 assault rifle and can be added to other individual weapons already in service.

The additional capability will aid infantry in identifying a target, monitoring its movements, and sustaining a focus on the target regardless of user or target movement.

“The importance of uncrewed aerial vehicles on the modern battlefield is undeniable,” said James Cartlidge, Minister for Defense Procurement. “Alongside procuring, developing and deploying this technology in a range of different ways, we must also be proactive in ensuring our Armed Forces can protect against their use by adversaries.”

In January of this year, Smartshooter successfully passed two prototype systems through readiness tests for the Individual Weapon Overmatch Optic (IWOO) project.

Using a see-through display, the IWOO system automatically detects, highlights, and tracks potential targets, including drones. While the soldier has the smart weapon site active, an overlay on the lens will indicate the direction to aim to in order to hit even a small aerial target moving at speed.

While the soldier is activating the firearm by applying pressure to the trigger, the system suppresses the firing mechanism until the rifle is aimed on the correct trajectory to hit its target.

Col. Paul Cummings, DE&S Dismounted Close Combat (DCC) Portfolio Leader, said that delivering this capability to soldiers by the end of the year is a sign of the commitment within DCC to being equipped for future tasks. “It’s great to see the way in which the team has reacted to tackling this emerging threat, through trials and testing, achieving contract award in short time,” said Cummings.

Under the new five-year Framework Agreement, an initial £4.6 m order for SMASH sights worth up to £20m has been approved for delivery to operational readiness units across the Dismounted Close Combat (DCC) community by the end of this year.

The contract with the Yorkshire-based SME Viking Arms Ltd will enable the delivery of additional sights to dismounted close combat operators in the Army, Navy, and RAF over the next few years, based on operational and readiness requirements.

SMASH sights are the first equipment capability delivery from Army Land Ground Based Air Defense Program Project 6, providing C-sUAS capability to dismounted and mounted soldiers.

New Products: Springfield Armory, Advantage Arms & Brownells

Paul Levy, leader of the Brownells new product acquisition team, gets right down to business with the Springfield Armory Echelon full-size 9mm pistol. The most unique aspect of the polymer-framed Echelon is the Core Operating Group or “COG.” The COG contains the fire control system and is the serial-numbered part of the gun. In the future, you’ll be able to swap your Echelon’s frame / grip assembly without making an FFL purchase. The ergonomically contoured grip’s texturing gives you a secure, non-slip hold without being excessively aggressive. Each Echelon comes with three interchangeable backstrap inserts, so you can customize the grip to fit your hand.

The Echelon also comes standard with a red dot sight mounting slot, but this mount does not use any separate adapter plates. The Variable Interface System accepts more than 30 different reflex sights. Bonus: this mount keeps the optic low, so you can still use your Echelon’s “iron” sights as backups. The pistol in Paul’s hands has a Tritium front sight and white-outlined U-notch rear sight. Other options: a Tritium rear sight and a 1/2″-28 tpi threaded muzzle. Each Echelon comes with a 17-round magazine with a flush base plate, a 20-round mag with an extended base pad, and a spare extended base pad for the 17-round mag.

The trigger pull is surprisingly precise for a striker-fired pistol. There’s a bit of take-up, then a crisp, clean release, followed by a distinct reset you can both hear (“click!”) and feel.

The Brownells Rail Adapter System AR-15 handguards are just like the RAS handguards currently on M4 carbines and M16A4 rifles – actually made for us by the same contractor. They have four MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails with polymer rail covers that make the RAS handguards look very much like the old M4 and A2 handguards. And just like the plastic handguards, the RAS handguards easily snap onto an AR that has a Delta ring and handguard end cap. Locking screws prevent the Picatinny rails from shifting, so you won’t lose the zero of a laser or night vision device mounted on them.

Good news: some popular Brownells Retro Rifle AR-15 parts are back! The M16A1 stripped upper receiver replicates the exterior contours and details of uppers from late 1960s rifles, with a forward assist but no shell deflector. The C7 upper has the shell deflector and exterior details of Canadian C7 and Colt 723 rifles in service from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.

Also back are the polymer handguards replicating those found on CAR-15 and M4 carbines. The CAR-15 handguard was used on the original Colt carbines of the late 1960s. The larger-diameter M4 handguard is the original type used on M4 carbines. And yes, our M4 handguard has the aluminum heat shield inside.

The Advantage Arms .22 LR Conversion Kits for Glock® 19 / 23 pistols let you practice at the range using inexpensive .22 rimfire ammunition. Just swap the centerfire slide assembly for the Advantage Arms unit, load up the included magazine, and your good to go. AA offers versions of the kit with a threaded barrel and even with a Holosun reflex sight already installed.

Operating the VRS system is fast and easy, said Searle. “Think of it like a moldable bean bag. When filled with air, it looks and feels like a pillow in the bottom of your case. Place your guns and gear atop the insert, then use the included pump to remove the air. You’ll see the soft, pliable cushion change into a solid structure conforming to whatever is resting on it,” he explained. “At that point, the VRS insert is in a solid state and ready for transportation or storage. When you use your case for different gear, attach the pump and add air back into the VRS Insert.”

“Like many people, we travel far distances for destination hunting experiences, and having confidence that our guns, optics, and gear will arrive as expected is priceless,” said Eppele. “Because the KOR VRS inserts keep everything snug, we don’t worry our guns will arrive scratched, or our optics will need to be zeroed again. We arrive and are immediately prepared.”

Nighthawk Custom is proud to offer a full line of fixed blade knives from local bladesmith Sam Roddy. Roddy is an impressive young bladesmith who trained under an Arkansas native bladesmith legend, Keith Murr. Roddy has been hand building knives here in the Ozarks since 2018. In 2020, he branched out on his own after getting his first belt grinder and opening his shop, Roddy Knives. Roddy now operates out of his personal shop in Huntsville, AR, about 30 minutes south of Nighthawk Custom.

Roddy proudly forges his own steel and hand builds the knife using the same philosophy as us, but as One Blade, One Bladesmith. His Damascus patterns are created by taking 1080 and 15N20 steel and alternating them in 30-35 layers. He then heats that metal up to 2,300-2,400 degrees and uses a 25-ton press to forge the steel together.
