Team Winchester sporting clays shooters kicked off the season with big wins at the Jack Link’s Cup at Quail Creek Plantation in Okeechobee, Florida.

EAST ALTON, IL (February 21, 2024) — Team Winchester sporting clays shooters kicked off the season with big wins at the recent Jack Link’s Cup at Quail Creek Plantation in Okeechobee, Florida. Joe Fanizzi, who won the inaugural event in 2022, was triumphant once again with a monster score of 195/200.
Mike Wilgus, who is shooting in his first year in the veteran concurrent, was the veteran runner-up in the main event with a score of 186. Mike was also the HOA runner up in both the FITASC and Super Sporting events. Mike’s near perfect 99 in the Super Sporting event made him the outright veteran winner by 3 birds.

In a world where tradition often intertwines with innovation, Big Horn Armory has carved its niche as a trailblazer in the firearms industry. Founded by Greg Buchel, a visionary leader with a diverse professional journey, the company is renowned for pushing the boundaries of conventional firearm design. In an exclusive interview, Greg sheds light on his experiences, the challenges faced, and the compelling vision that propels Big Horn Armory forward.

Greg’s journey from a classically trained architect to the founder of Big Horn Armory is a testament to the unpredictable nature of career paths. He recalls the early 1980s when high double digit inflation and interest rates crippled the construction industries, which in turn affected architecture. This period was also the genesis of the personal computer industry. It was during this tumultuous time that Greg found a new opportunity in producing distributable software media—a Plan B that proved highly successful. The success he saw in this venture eventually led to the creation of his current endeavor, Big Horn Armory. This journey laid the foundation for the company’s commitment to excellence.

The genesis of Big Horn Armory was fueled by a fascination with firearms, particularly the idea of creating a lever gun chambered in the powerful 500 S&W Magnum—a feat many had attempted but failed. Greg’s vision was to succeed where others faltered, and the result was the creation of the Model 89 lever gun that became the cornerstone of the company’s identity.

The design for the Model 89 was born with the realization that the right thing to do was shrink down the Model 86 to the dimensions of the 500 S&W. The Model 86 had some internal geometries that were thought to be very difficult to manufacture, so Model 92 internals were adopted. The process of shrinking the 1886 to 500 S&W dimensions took many a twist and turn until finally in 2009 the first shooting prototypes were produced in time for hunting season. Elk, antelope, and mule deer were taken locally.

The company’s original focus was to produce mainstream production lever guns. This evolved into the higher-end custom guns that are produced today. All Big Horn Armory firearms are built to exact fit and finish standards, using different grades and species of walnut along with different metal finishes to create truly heirloom firearms that will last for generations. Choices of wood and metal finish are all geared to give the customer the ultimate in personal customization.

For Greg, essential leadership qualities include audacity, perseverance, and tenacity. Having a backup plan, as demonstrated in his own career, is crucial for navigating unforeseen challenges. This resilient approach has not only shaped Greg’s professional journey but has also become ingrained in Big Horn Armory’s corporate culture.

The company’s culture is defined by the devotion of its employees to firearms and their craftsmanship. Greg emphasizes the importance of paying attention to employees, as they often provide valuable insights into areas of improvement. In terms of product development, the company tends to make products that interest them, so the creation of new products is an outgrowth of several hundred years of experience among its employees. The company also constantly reviews and improves its offerings as part of its quality control mechanisms. This helps to find flaws in the internal processes and allows the company to correct them. New products are also considered with the same thoughts in mind. Big Horn Armory has numerous new products in the works at any given moment. Some are extensions of current products, while others are completely new for the brand.

The product lineup, including the iconic Model 89 and the innovative AR500 rifle, reflects the company’s commitment to diversity. Customization options, such as different grades of walnut and metal finishes, allow customers to own truly unique firearms. The AR500 chambered in 500 Auto Max was a logical progression for Big Horn Armory. The AR platform is a long-term trend, especially among younger customers. Big Horn Armory developed in collaboration with Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore Ammunition and Robert Hayden of Starline Brass to create a rimless version of the 500 S&W. The rimless configuration allows feeding from the box magazine required in the AR platforms.

The AR500 uses an AR10 as its basis due to its larger bolt and barrel extension. This combo was tested far beyond the 60,000 psi pressure for the cartridge without any deformation. This makes the AR500 stand out as the most powerful AR platform on the market.

User feedback plays a pivotal role in product improvements. Customer suggestions, such as the addition of red dot sights and take-down lever guns, are examples of Big Horn Armory’s responsiveness to consumer needs. Collaborations with industry partners, including Buffalo Bore, Starline, and Lehigh Defense, showcase the company’s dedication to innovative solutions.

As Big Horn Armory looks to the future, Greg emphasizes the importance of adaptation to industry trends. The firearms industry has been one of continual change for hundreds of years. Crow Shooting Supply Adds to NSSF First Shots Host Range Incentives

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, is pleased to announce that Crow Shooting Supply has stepped up to encourage shooting ranges to host more of NSSF’s First Shots® programs through a generous store credit match incentive.

Ranges and retailer-ranges that host First Shots events can generate up to $1,500 ($15 credit for each person they put through a First Shots experience) in store credit with Crow Shooting Supply, in addition to the $1,500 monetary incentive that shooting facilities can generate through NSSF’s new First Shots incentives that were announced late last year. This special incentive provided by Crow Shooting Supply will run now through March 31.

Crow Shooting Supply, a wholesale distributor based on Montezuma, Iowa, wants to encourage ranges to become new and repeat hosts of First Shots events to provide more people with their first or refresher experience enjoying the shooting sports.

“NSSF’s First Shots program is grateful to Crow Shooting Supply for this extra incentive to ranges to help people not only discover the shooting sports by taking their first shots but also to have their questions answered about firearm ownership and responsible use and storage, ” said Zach Snow, NSSF Director, Member Development. “Americans in growing numbers are eager to learn about firearm ownership, and First Shots has been designed to assist them by providing education in the classroom and experience on the range.”

NSSF’s First Shots is an introductory and refresher program made available through host target-shooting ranges across the country. By providing educational experiences that are safe, fun and memorable, host ranges are having great success in attracting first-timers, further engaging new gun owners and in reactivating lapsed participants. Surveys show that 60 percent of First Shots participants returned to their host range while spending more than $850 annually on their shooting sports endeavors.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to firearms education and safety, Crow Shooting Supply is teaming up with the NSSF’s First Shots program. We’re all about getting people to support their local shooting ranges and helping newcomers. It’s not just about pulling the trigger; it’s about creating a community that’s knowledgeable, respects tradition and keeps safety front and center in shooting sports,” said Pete Brownell, CEO of Crow Shooting Supply.

ScentLok continues the bomber tradition with its new Insulated Bomber Hat. But unlike your great grandpa’s heirloom version, ScentLok’s new interpretation adds technology, modern insulation, and improved fit.

At core of the Insulated Bomber Hat’s furnace is 100g of authentic Thinsulate®. The lightweight material traps heat without bulky old-school materials. Technology continues with ScentLok’s Carbon Alloy®. The proprietary technology offers continuous absorption of odors by combining treated carbon, activated carbon, and zeolite to adsorb odors emitted by your body.

Next, ScentLok added a DryLok® waterproof and windproof membrane to align with inclement weather and late season temperatures. ScentLok’s DryLok waterproof and windproof membrane is a signature technology in several current parkas, jackets, bibs, and pants. The cherry on top is a DWR (durable water repellent) treatment to prevent light moisture from even making it to the DryLok membrane.

Outside, you’ll find a premium, smooth, quiet, and comfortable polyester outer fabric. Internally, you’ll appreciate the long nap fleece lining, which provides extraordinary warmth and comfort. This while a short brim funnels light moisture away and provides some sun protection.

All said, the Insulated Bomber Hat’s most memorable features are the earflaps and neck protection. The insulated flaps cinch comfortably under your chin with sizable Velcro tabs to accommodate heads of all shapes and sizes. And, when conditions don’t necessitate a full wrap, you can secure the earflaps over the top of the hat. In addition, its extended neck protection does what most hunting hats can’t – shield your neck from cold winds.

AG Composites Now Offering Bottom Metals For Its Custom Rifle Stocks

OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala.  (Feb. 15, 2024) — — AG Composites — the leader in the design and production of custom rifle stocks for both hunters and the world’s top competition shooters – is now offering bottom metals on its best-in-class custom rifle stocks.
The company currently offers two configurations of bottom metals: the AG M5 and the AG BDL. The AG M5 Bottom Metal is made from 6061 aluminum, has a black anodized finish, and weighs just 2.5 ounces (Short Action) or 3.9 ounces (Long Action). It is designed for use with AICS magazines, and AG Composites recommends using Magpul, MDT, AI mags, and Hawkins Hunter DBM magazines (an AW magazine is compatible if your action is cut for AW magazines.) The AG M5 Bottom Metal fits M5 inlets (it will not work with BDL inlets.) It is available in both short action length and long action length (3.715-inch mag length) for calibers such as the 30.06, .270, and 7mm Rem. Mag., .300 Win Mag., etc., and CIP Long Action Length (3.850-inch mag length) for calibers such as the .300 PRC, .300 Norma, .28 Nosler, etc. The AG BDL Bottom Metal has an M5 inlet, allowing the user to change from a hinged floor plate to a detachable bottom metal without having to modify the stock. It is also carefully crafted from 6061 aluminum, has a black anodized finish, and weighs just 2.5 ounces (Short Action) and 2.6 ounces (Long Action). A magazine box, spring, and follower are not included. The suggested retail price for either bottom metal is $199. However, if the customer bundles the purchase of the bottom metal with the purchase of a stock, the price is reduced to $149.

In addition to bottom metals, AG Composites now offers several other anodized aluminum add-ons. The AG Picatinny Rail with Quick Detach Cup, which works on stocks with swivel hole spacing up to 2.5 inches, is made from 6061 aluminum, has a black anodized finish, measures 3.25 inches long, weighs a mere .7 ounces, and has an MSRP of $50. AG ARCA Rails are also available in lengths of either 4-, 6-, or 8 inches, which weigh in at 1.5 ounces, 2.5 ounces, and 3 ounces, respectively, and are also made from black anodized 6061 aluminum. MSRP is $50.00 (4-inch), $55.00 (6-inch), and $60.00 (8-inch.) Finally, the black anodized 6061 aluminum AG Quick Detach (QD) Cup weighs just .14 ounces each and carries an MSRP of just $9. The following QD sling accessories are recommended: Magpul QD cups, Bengor QD cups, and SOMA QD cups.

NSSF, ASA, SOBA, USFWS and Washington Department of Natural Resources partner to continue providing boating and fishing access.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, in partnership with the American Sportfishing Association, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, States Organization for Boating Access and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has released another film in the “Partner with a Payer®” series — a collection of videos highlighting the importance of wildlife conservation and management. The latest video, “Waterways for All: Improving and Expanding Public Fishing and Boating Access,” showcases the work being done to continue providing public boat launches and public fishing piers throughout the United States.

To fund these conservation efforts, the Sport Fish Restoration Act authorizes a small federal excise tax on certain items — 10 percent on fishing equipment; 3 percent tax on electric boat motors, tackle and fly boxes; import duties on tackle, pleasure boats and yachts; and a portion of the federal gas tax that is attributable to motorboats and small engines. Since 1952, these excise taxes have contributed and distributed more than $11.3 billion (over $17 billion when adjusted for inflation) to individual states. Together, these excise taxes fund public boat ramps, fisheries projects and aquatic education, providing countless public outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the United States of America.

Kathy Hollar, Division Manager, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, explained how imperative the partnerships are to outdoor conservation and recreation. “Our industry manufacturers are vitally important to the Sportfish Restoration Program. Without their federal excise tax contributions, we wouldn’t have had seven decades of fish restoration and boating access projects across the country for all of America to enjoy,” Hollar stated.

Representatives from the Washington Department of Natural Resources, American Sportfishing Association, the States Organization for Boating Access and USFWS came together to tour the Defiance Boats factory and other marine facilities. Throughout the tours, they learned what it takes to generate the excise tax revenues that support sportfish restoration and increase outdoor recreation participation in Washington and across the country. The state and federal agency staff also discussed specific projects where funds have provided key opportunities for the public to launch, dock and moor boats, as well as to fish and engage in other water-related activities.

Defiance Boats supports the initiatives that create long-lasting opportunities for the public to participate in outdoor activities. “We have only a certain amount of fish and wildlife, so it’s important that we take care of those stocks not just for the boaters of today, but for my kids and the future generations that will come. Programs like this are really important to help make that happen,” said Bo Palmer, CEO, Defiance Boats, Allied Boats, Defiance Marine.

The group also toured several boat ramps, fishing piers and other nearby facilities built with Sportfish Restoration funds. “In Washington state, there has been a huge impact. We’ve constructed over 15,000 linear feet of boat moorage, 400 or so boat slips and also some upland amenities for those boaters such as restrooms, laundry facilities and showers,” said Karl Jacobs, Senior Outdoor Grants Manager, Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. He continued, “States are working really hard to put that money to good work.”

This project was funded by the Multistate Conservation Grant Program. The latest video and others in the series were produced by Shine United LLC / Kingdom Filmworks.
