NSSF Reacts to SCOTUS Denial of Illinois MSR Ban Challenge
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, is disappointed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s denial of a writ of certiorari in Barnett v. Raoul, one of several challenges to Illinois’ bans on Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) and standard-capacity magazines. The decision not to review the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit’s decision at this early stage of the litigation, while disappointing, does not mean the Supreme Court will not review the matter later after final judgment.
The Supreme Court denied review now because the U.S. Court of Appeals has not yet issued a final judgment. Justice Samuel Alito, however, would have granted the petition now. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote, “This Court is rightly wary of taking cases in an interlocutory posture. But, I hope we will consider the important issue presented by these petitions after the cases reach final judgment.”
Justice Thomas concluded Illinois’ bans are “highly suspect,” finding it “difficult to see how the Seventh Circuit could have concluded that the most widely owned semiautomatic rifles are not ‘Arms’ protected by the Second Amendment.” He added, “But, if the Seventh Circuit ultimately allows Illinois to ban America’s most common civilian rifle, we can—and should—review that decision once the cases reach a final judgment. The Court must not permit ‘the Seventh Circuit [to] relegat[e] the Second Amendment to a second-class right.’”
“We are disappointed the U.S. Supreme Court chose not to accept this challenge at this time to what is clearly an unconstitutional law,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “The Modern Sporting Rifle – or AR-15-style rifle – is the most popular-selling centerfire rifle in America, used for lawful purposes every day. That includes recreational target shooting, hunting and self-defense. These rifles are clearly ‘Arms’ that are protected by the Second Amendment for law-abiding citizens to keep and bear.”
There are over 28.1 million MSRs in circulation today, more than there are Ford F-150s on the road today– the most popular-selling pick-up truck in America.
The challenge to Illinois’ ban on MSRs and standard-capacity magazines, Barnett v. Raoul, will now proceed to trial later this year in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.

NSSF Partners with Gunsite Academy, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office and Area Police Departments to Launch Project ChildSafe and Promote Secure Firearm Storage
PRESCOTT, Ariz. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, today joined with industry partner Gunsite Academy along with Sheriff David Rhodes of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office and representatives of the Prescott Police Department, Prescott Valley P.D. and Chino Valley P.D. to bring NSSF’s Project ChildSafe® and its message of preventing unauthorized access to firearms to greater Prescott.
NSSF has provided thousands of firearm safety kits, each kit including a gun lock and safety brochure, to the community for distribution to gun owners and their families. The local partners will take advantage of the week-long Prescott Frontier Days/The World’s Oldest Rodeo to distribute Project ChildSafe cable gun locks and firearm safety literature.
At a press conference on the steps of the Yavapai County Courthouse, NSSF’s Bill Brassard, Senior Director of Communications, emphasized that “no one wants their firearm in the hands of an unsupervised child, a person with suicidal thoughts or a thief who might use the firearm to commit a crime.” He added, “Hiding a gun is not safe storage. Gun owners have many storage options to choose from to prevent unwanted access, including lock boxes, safes for homes and vehicles and digital devices. There’s a device to meet every gun owner’s storage needs.”
Brassard noted that NSSF’s Gun Storage Check WeekTM, a national awareness campaign that ran June 1-7 and will repeat September 1-7 during National Suicide Prevention Month, amplifies the Project ChildSafe’s message. Gun Storage Check Week reminds gun owners to check on their storage practices and do their part to help prevent accidents, suicides and thefts. “Make Sure It’s Secure®” is the campaign’s slogan.
Sheriff Rhodes thanked NSSF for providing the Project ChildSafe gun locks, which will be available at Yavapai County Sheriff’s main office and substations. He said, “The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is a leader in firearms safety and continues working hard to keep our communities safe. While we firmly believe firearm ownership is the right of all Americans, we also believe with that right comes responsibility. The responsibility to keep your firearm safe and secure, preventing gun accidents, theft and misuse. YCSO is proud to partner with the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Project Childsafe program and Gunsite Academy to ensure all gun owners have the necessary safety and education materials to keep their homes safe and secure.”
Ken Campbell, CEO of Gunsite Academy, said, “Gunsite Academy has been at the forefront of firearm safety and training for almost 50 years. Our founder, the late Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper simplified and codified the safety rules into four simple and succinct parts. These rules are now universally copied and promoted. Gunsite is proud to partner with the Yavapaii County Sheriff’s Office and the National Shooting Sports Foundation to continue promoting gun safety and proper training.”
Brassard added that securely storing firearms plays an important role in preventing suicide. In Arizona and nationally, most firearm-related fatalities are suicide deaths. NSSF has responded to this by developing resources, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, to make gun owners and their families aware of the warning signs of suicide, how to reach out to someone who’s struggling and knowing about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
“The decision to take one’s life is often impulsive, sometimes occurring in ten minutes or less,” said Brassard. “Preventing access to a firearm when someone is in crisis allows time for the acute period of risk to pass or for intervention to take place, and that can save lives.”
Project ChildSafe is marking its 25th year of promoting safe firearm handling and secure storage. The program began in 1999 in five pilot cities and grew to be embraced as a community firearm safety program throughout the country. Today, Project ChildSafe operates in all 50 states and the five U.S. territories, has worked with more than 15,000 law enforcement partners and distributed more than 41 million firearm safety kits that each include a cable gun lock. The program helps gun owners and their families determine which safety devices can best meet their secure storage needs by providing resources such as this safe storage options infographic and this video that provides tips to parents about having regular conversations with their children about gun safety.
According to National Safety Council data from 2022, preventable firearm injury related deaths have declined by 39.2 percent over the last 20 years, which coincides with Project ChildSafe’s efforts.

Delivering up to 5,300 lumens and an extraordinary beam reach, the rechargeable system comes with a charge cord and two Streamlight SL-B48® Li-Ion rechargeable battery packs with an integrated USB-C charge port. The new light also features a convenient head-mounted, push-button switch, an anti-roll face cap and a sure-grip rubber sleeve.
“The ProTac HL 6 is like a handheld flood light, allowing users to see all around them while also providing a powerful beam reach to put more light on a target at a distance,” said Streamlight Chief Revenue Officer, Michael F. The ProTac HL 6 uses the latest in power LED technology for extreme brightness. Its multi-function, easy-access head switch allows for one-handed operation of the light’s momentary, variable intensity, or strobe modes. On the high setting, it delivers 5,300 lumens and 80,000 candela over 566 meters. On medium, it offers 1,500 lumens, 23,000 candela and a 303-meter beam distance. On low, the light provides 450 lumens and 6,700 candela over 164 meters. Run time ranges from 12 hours and 30 minutes on low to two hours on high; in strobe mode, the light runs for four hours.
The new light features TEN-TAP® programming, which allows for user selection from among three programs: high/strobe/low (factory default); high only; or low/medium/high.
The ProTac HL 6 is powered by two included 5000mAh SL-B48 protected Li-Ion USB-C rechargeable battery packs which are rechargeable up to 500 times.
Fabricated from 6000 series machined aircraft aluminum with an anodized finish, the new light features an anti-roll face cap, and a textured rubber sleeve and lanyard to ensure a tight grip. It has a gasket-sealed glass lens with an anti-reflective coating.
The ProTac HL 6 measures 10.5 inches in length and weighs 1.3 pounds with two SL-B48 rechargeable batteries. It is rated IPX7, making it waterproof to one meter for 30 minutes. The light is also impact resistance-tested to one meter.
Available in black, the light comes in two models, the ProTac HL 6 with a 120V USB adapter or the ProTac HL 6 without an adapter. The two models have MSRPs of $265.38 and $247.78, respectively. Both ship with two SL-B48 Li-Ion battery packs, a USB-C “Y” cord and lanyard, and come with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Fort Worth, Texas (July 1, 2024)—Nothing complements a nighttime outdoor event quite like the vision of flickering lights. From campfires to candlelight, the soft glow of a warm light adds the perfect ambiance to any venue. The Retired Investigators Guild (the RIG) and Midnight Platoon Collaborate to Release a New Shirt Supporting Cold Case Homicide Investigations
A portion of all proceeds from the sale of The RIG T-Shirt will help to support the RIG’s mission of providing answers to victim’s families and solving cold case homicides.
Reno, Nev. (June 2024) – The Retired Investigators Guild (the RIG) and Midnight Platoon are excited to announce the release of a new shirt designed to highlight the incredible nonprofit work of the RIG, which provides answers to victim’s families and solves cold case homicides. This collaboration symbolizes both organizations shared commitment to bringing justice to victims and their families while giving back to the community. A portion of the proceeds from each shirt sale will go directly to supporting the RIG’s investigative work. Pre-orders are now available for purchase.

The design is both striking and respectful, honoring the commitment of the RIG which continues to serve its communities by solving cold-case homicides. Midnight Platoon is a preferred partner of the RIG for clothing and law enforcement support apparel. Midnight Platoon’s story began after a line of duty (LOD) shooting. While awaiting the DA’s justification, Liakos began to crank out some killer designs. The Midnight Platoon brand was well represented by all of NYPD’s (now disbanded) OCCB units who handled heavy enforcement, consisting of 85 percent of the city’s annual arrests. Launched in 2012, Midnight Platoon welcomes all LEOs, Military, and civilian patriots to wear and support the brand. It is committed to crafting unique high-quality clothing with a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.
The RIG is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Reno that has national reach. Donations for the RIG’s work can be made by visiting the Retired Investigators Guild – Pledge page. Donations will go directly to funding this endeavor.

Latest Model of Popular Low-Profile Tactical Light is Multi-Fuel; Delivers 500 Lumens
EAGLEVILLE, PA, June 27, 2024 – Streamlight® Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting and weapon light/laser sighting devices introduced an upgraded version of its popular TLR-7® sub weapon-mounted tactical light, featuring multi-fuel operation with USB or disposable battery options. Delivering 500 lumens, the new ultra-compact and low profile TLR-7® X sub is available to fit select GLOCK®, SIG SAUER®, Smith & Wesson®, Beretta®, Springfield Armory® and Heckler & Koch® railed subcompact handguns.
“We have re-invented our best-selling TLR-7 sub tactical light by giving users the choice of using either a cost-saving USB-C rechargeable battery pack or a disposable battery, depending on availability or user preference,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “Like its forerunner, the new TLR-7 X sub is extremely bright, compact and low-profile, and can be mounted on many railed subcompact weapons for maximizing visibility and targeting capability in tactical situations. It also has the same rear switches on the left and right of the trigger guard to allow for ambidextrous operation.”
The new light is available in four different models to fit the GLOCK® 43X/48 MOS and 43X/48 Rail; the SIG SAUER® P365® and P365® XL (closed rail systems); the Springfield Armory® Hellcat®; and select 1913 short railed subcompacts including the Smith & Wesson® M&P® M2.0® subcompact, Beretta® Px4 Storm subcompact, Springfield Armory® XD-E™, XD-S® and Hellcat® Pro, Heckler & Koch® HK45 compact, and SIG SAUER® P365® XMACRO.
The TLR-7 X sub features a white power LED that delivers 5,000 candela and 500 lumens over a beam distance of 141 meters. Its custom TIR optic produces a concentrated beam that provides both extensive range as well as optimized peripheral coverage. When using a 3-volt CR123A lithium battery, the light has a run time of 1.5 hours. With a Streamlight SL-B9® Li-Ion rechargeable battery pack inserted, the run time is 1 hour. The Li-Ion 850mAh battery pack can be installed or removed through the light’s face cap, eliminating the need to detach the light from the firearm. The battery pack charges within 2.5 hours via a USB-C cord and is rechargeable up to 500 cycles.
Like other lights in the TLR line, the TLR-7 X sub features a one-handed, snap on and tighten interface that keeps hands away from gun muzzles when attaching or detaching them. The light also includes a “safe-off” feature, locking it so it cannot be turned on accidentally. Each model of the TLR-7 X sub features a specialized clamp system for mounting to rails, using the provided key kit.
Constructed with 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminum with a black anodized finish, the TLR-7 X sub weighs 2.39 ounces using a CR123A battery and 2.64 ounces with the SL-B9 rechargeable battery pack. The light measures 2.51 inches in length.
With impact-resistant construction, the new light features an IPX7-rated design, making it waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
The TLR-7 X sub comes with a single CR123A lithium disposable battery, while the TLR-7 X sub USB model ships with a rechargeable SL-B9® battery pack and a USB-C charge cord; both models can accept either battery. The TLR-7 X sub has an MSRP of $253.66 and the TLR-7 X sub USB has an MSRP of $265.66. Both come with Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.
