Why one tiny town in Australia is an HF radio powerhouse
Wiluna is 1,000km from Perth Western Australia and has a population in the hundreds. Despite this, it is home to test and transmission sites for internationally significant communication systems.
In 1896, gold miners hit the jackpot in Western Australia. Mining projects brought residents to the area, and the town that they established would become known as Wiluna. Its industry and population peaked in the 1930s, but since then numbers have fallen and many of the mines have closed. Wiluna is currently home to around 300 people, with a further 1,300 in the surrounding county.
Despite its size, the town holds remarkable significance in the field of high-frequency radio. HF radio uses the ionosphere to transmit signals over thousands of kilometres, enabling secure, long-distance communication. Situated 1,000km from Perth, Wiluna is well-placed to host both testing and transmission infrastructure.
Marine weather warnings and distress calls
AMSA’s Wiluna Radio (VMW) is one of only two transmitters broadcasting hourly marine weather information and warnings from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology over HF radio. Routine weather forecasts are also transmitted six times a day. In addition, the network is used to make broadcasts for search and rescue purposes when necessary.
Alongside transmission, the station monitors offshore distress calls for the region, which are remotely managed by the Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra. Wiluna covers the coastlines of Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, whilst its counterpart in Charleville (QLD) does the same for the other half of the country.
GMDSS coastal networks
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) incorporates an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures for radio distress calls, ensuring ships have the communication tools in place to contact onshore authorities in an emergency. Through Wiluna Radio, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) receives these signals and can provide assistance to those in need.
The town’s involvement in GMDSS compliance does not end there. Wiluna is home to an HF radio testing station for Barrett Communications, a leading supplier of HF radio communication systems.
Barrett Communications produce a variety of HF radio products to meet communication needs, whether for coastal networks, military operations, or communities facing natural disasters. The company’s 4075 High Power HF Transmitter offers a rack-mounted solution for large-scale HF communication base stations, and is used by GMDSS coast radio networks around the world.
Technical information on HF radio sites
The company’s HF radio site in Wiluna is approximately 22km east of the VMW HF site and is regularly used to develop new systems.
Equipment at the Barrett Wiluna site consists of:
– Transceiver – 1 x Barrett 4050 HF SDR Transceiver (100W pep) with a 4022 24V power supply
– Antenna – Barrett 912 Multiwire broadband dipole antenna deployed on a Barrett 10m Air transportable mast in an inverted “V” configuration
The HF Radio site in Bibra Lake at the Barrett HQ consists of:
– Transceiver – 1 x Barrett 4050 HF SDR Transceiver (100W pep) with a 4022 24V power supply
– Antenna – Barrett 912 Multiwire broadband antenna deployed between two permanent masts.
The 4050 HF SDR Transceiver at both sites is connected to the internet (LTE) via a router/modem which allows full remote control of the station from any location over the internet.
Furthermore, The Barrett Wiluna site is installed in an existing building supplied by, and with the support of, the Shire of Wiluna. In addition, the Wiluna site is used by the Australian Department of Defence for defence industry integration activities, with Barrett support.
Both sites can be operated remotely over the internet (LTE) via the Barrett 4000 Series HF remote control app. For example, recently Barrett personnel were working on a project in Tonga and remotely operating the Wiluna HF radio from that location over the internet. They were communicating over HF radio with a Barrett 4075 high-power transmitter located in Malaysia.
The Wiluna HF station is ideal in terms of distance from Bibra Lake at 1,000km as this represents one “Ionosphere skip zone”.
Innovations are changing the game for communications. But with the continued importance of HF radio globally, the Wiluna site will continue to play an important role for years to come.

EAST ALTON, IL (September 18, 2024) — Winchester Ammunition introduces 21 Sharp™, a new rimfire cartridge with an innovative design that provides significant benefits for recreational shooters and small game hunters.
The new cartridge is an evolution in rimfire technology and performance. Winchester engineering expertise is at the core of the 21 Sharp design, built from the ground up for enhanced accuracy and on-target performance with both lead and lead-free projectiles. Ammo manufacturers have tried with little success to incorporate lead free projectiles into use in the venerable 22 Long Rifle (LR) cartridge. While those products are available, none have ever met the accuracy and on-target performance that a lead projectile can provide due to the original 22 LR design. The new 21 Sharp rimfire cartridge from Winchester was purposefully designed by Winchester to provide top performance with lead-free projectiles rather than accommodating them later.
The new cartridge allows for a wide range of bullet types including full metal jacket (FMJ), copper matrix and plated-lead options. Jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullets will also be available in 21 Sharp, delivering extreme expansion and energy transfer.
“The 21 Sharp cartridge offers significant advantages in the rimfire category, which is one of the more popular types of firearms and ammunition used by millions of people throughout the world,” said Kyle Masinelli, Senior Director of Product Innovation and Strategy for Winchester Ammunition. “Winchester leadership in cartridge development spans more than 100 years and as the global leader in ammunition design and manufacturing; it’s our job to serve our customers with innovative products that fit their needs now and into the future. 21 Sharp™ Ammunition Offerings:
- Game & Target 25 grain, Copper Matrix – The Winchester designed, lead-free, rimfire bullet produces sub 1.5 MOA groups at 50 yards, outperforming all lead-free .22 LR offerings available today.
- Game & Target 37 grain, Black Copper Plated – This bullet is the most comparable to a standard .22 LR offering with improved accuracy and offers an economical round for plinking applications.
- Game & Target 42 grain, FMJ – Winchester designed this high- performance full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet for those high-volume range sessions with less frequent cleanings and more time for shooting.

D&M Holding Company Announces Expansion of Current White River Energetics Primer Facility and New Smokeless Propellant Factory
DES ARC, Ark. (September 17, 2024) – D&M Holding Company, Inc. (D&M), an ammunition and energetics engineering company, is investing $70 million to expand its current White River Energetics (WRE) ammunition primer and energetics facility in Des Arc, Arkansas, and build a single-base, smokeless propellant factory.
“Currently, there is a worldwide shortage of smokeless propellant that is affecting munitions availability globally,” said Dan Powers, President and CEO of D&M Holding Company, Inc. “This will be the first single-base propellant factory to be built in the United States in over 50 years.”
White River Energetics currently has 125 employees at the Des Arc facility, with 73 new employees added in the past year. The expansion will create 100 new jobs and increase the Des Arc campus from 14,000 square feet to over 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Construction on the expansion is underway and expected to be completed in Q1 2026.
“We are proud of all the people and employees who have worked tirelessly to support WRE and make this happen,” said BJ Rogers, Vice President of Operations, D&M Holding Company, Inc. “Having grown up in Des Arc, I’m personally proud to see the successes that have been made with primers and look forward to continued success in the future production of propellant.”

The arrow’s 21% increased FOC (front of center) and .204 small-diameter shaft reduces wind drift, producing a deadly combination of blistering speed, downrange accuracy, and deeper penetration. HyperFlite arrows provide more than 25% deeper penetration than the competition.
The Hyper Raptor is exceptionally fast and proves to be tack-driving accurate. Barnett’s Halo System eliminates cable crossing and cam lean to create perfectly balanced string travel for superior accuracy. Additionally, arrows are held secure with Barnett’s Soft Lok™ Floating Bristle Arrow Retainer System, and CNC machined aluminum flight track provides consistency shot after shot.
The Hyper Raptor utilizes a metal-injected molded trigger and TriggerTech™ Frictionless Release Technology (a $200 value). The TriggerTech trigger features a reliable, crisp, 3-pound pull for consistent shots and improved accuracy, while an Anti-Dry Fire (ADF) system and a nock sensor ensure the crossbow is loaded correctly. Additionally, the Rope Hold Roller Ball technology keeps the RCD rope in place as you attach hooks to string for more consistent cocking. For hunters looking to use a CCD, Barnett offers a compatible Hyper Raptor CCD buttstock.
Comfort and customization add the finishing touches to the Hyper Raptor. Multiple features, like the finger safety reminders above the pass-through forend with Verti-Grip palm rest, enhance hunter-friendly ergonomics. An adjustable length-of-pull buttstock and a padded, micro-adjustable cheek rest ensure a perfect length-of-pull and proper scope-to-eye alignment. Pre-installed string suppressors reduce recoil, vibration, and noise during the shot.
Barnett packs even more value to complete the Hyper Raptor package. The crossbow comes outfitted with a premium 4×36 illuminated, multi-reticle scope with flip-up caps. (GA-ASI) announces major displays during the Air Force Association’s (AFA) Air, Space & Cyber Conference, Sept. 16–18, 2024. During the show, just outside Washington, D.C., GA-ASI will exhibit:

The Air Force Research Laboratory’s XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) – the actual operational aircraft will be parked for static display at GA-ASI’s booth #734.

A full-scale model of GA-ASI’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), on display at the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s booth #1834.
Journalists and other AFA conference attendees are encouraged to view these and other GA-ASI exhibits to get the latest on how the company’s leadership in aircraft hardware, autonomy software, and other cutting-edge capabilities make it the strongest contender to build the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) for the U.S. and its allies.
OBSS
GA-ASI built the XQ-67A OBSS as part of an Air Force Research Laboratory effort. The aircraft flew for the first time in February 2024 and completed its initial round of flight testing in June. To demonstrate the maturity of its unmanned air-to-air platforms, GA-ASI engineers performed an Agile Combat deployment to the Gaylord Convention Center of the actual operational aircraft, using common commercial support equipment, to booth #734.
CCA
In addition, GA-ASI is showcasing a full-scale model of its CCA aircraft at booth #1834. In April, GA-ASI was selected to build a production CCA for the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center. Large numbers of these highly capable autonomous warplanes will fly alongside, and well ahead of, legacy human-piloted fighters to enhance their sensing, networking, and combat capabilities.

ESCORT BTS Bullpup Shotguns are Built to Last
Rogers, AR (September 16, 2024)—The ESCORT® BTS Bullpup offers all the perks of the VTS series shotguns in a more compact, portable package. This next-generation shotgun is available in 12 ga or .410 cal and in black or FDE Cerakote. Its compact nature makes it an excellent choice for field use or home defense.
The 12-gauge models feature an 18” barrel with removable chokes, including an extended cylinder bore choke brake that helps tame recoil with heavy shots or slugs. Also included are full and improved cylinder flush-mount chokes, with additional options available from HatsanUSA. Each gun ships with two 5-round magazines, but an optional 2-round magazine is also available. The gun’s SMART Valve Piston will cycle 7/8 oz to 2 oz magnum loads in 2 ¾” and 3” magnum rounds, credited to its self-regulating design.
The .410 models feature a 20” barrel with a fixed cylinder choke, suitable for both shots and slugs. This shotgun is one smooth operator, offering the same recoil-absorbing characteristics as the larger caliber models. The BTS ships with two 5-round magazines, but an optional low-capacity mag holds three shells. The gas operation performs similarly; standard and magnum loads cycle smoothly and reliably without requiring external adjustments.
The length of any bullpup is an advantage over traditional designs. Using the same gas-piston system as the other VTS shotguns, the BTS Bullpup is slender and has smaller dimensions. The synthetic barrel cover features Hatsan’s patented ThermoDefend technology that absorbs and dissipates heat while containing the gas operating system. A DuraDefend magazine enhances the durability against extended use.
The BTS Bullpup provides an exceptional shooting experience with enhanced ergonomics and thoughtfully laid-out controls. Recoil is expertly managed between a soft rubber buttpad and a long recoil spring. The soft rubber pistol grip is removable and can be exchanged for one of many currently available aftermarket options to suit the individual user. The tough polymer lower receiver also doubles as the forend grip, with soft rubber inlays for improved handling.
The BTS Bullpup features a one-piece carry handle sight that can be replaced with the included flip-up sights for a lower profile or mounted optics. Picatinny rails are also located on either side of the forend to accommodate a variety of accessories. The reversible charging handle provides the capability for ambidextrous use.
As with all ESCORT shotguns, the barrels are proof-tested at the factory to ensure quality and durability. The hard chrome and/or Cerakote coatings look great and are built to withstand the harshest conditions. HatsanUSA offers a 5-year limited warranty with all ESCORT firearms.

Refined and modernized for the 21st century, Galco’s Miami Classic II™ improves on the original Miami Classic™. Carrying a handgun in the same horizontal position as the Miami Classic, the Miami Classic II orients its spare ammo carrier in a vertical position, allowing a “gravity assist” and a natural grasp on the speedloaders when reloading.
A key component of this shoulder system is its spider harness. All four points of the spider harness pivot independently and are connected by our unique clover shaped Flexalon™ swivel back plate, which is a Galco trademark. This results in a perfect fit and lasting comfort for all sizes and shapes. The Miami Classic II’s harness straps are 1 1/2″ at their widest point, distributing weight while also remaining concealable.
This Miami Classic II is constructed of premium steerhide and includes holster, harness, ammo carrier and a set of harness fasteners. The Miami Classic II is fully modular. Optional accessories and components may be purchased separately, including commonly-used items like tie-downs.
The Miami Classic II is available in right or left hand draw in tan finish. Also available for autos.
