THE TRUTH BEHIND “STOPPING” A BULLET
What is the armor doing the instant it gets hit? Here’s the simple version.
Soft armor is built from multiple stacked layers of flexible, tightly-woven material. When a handgun bullet strikes it, the armor acts like a baseball glove that catches the round, spreads the force across the panel, and often causes the bullet to deform.
Hard armor, or rifle-rated armor, takes a different approach because it is rigid, designed to stop rounds with more pointed tips. Hard plates may use ceramics, steel, polyethylene, or combinations of those, and they typically stop a projectile by capturing and deforming it or by breaking it apart, then absorbing and spreading the remaining force.
