In 2019, the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) released its requirements for the MRGG-S (Mid-Range Gas Gun – Sniper). The firearm needed to have a 20-inch 6.5 Creedmoor barrel and sub-1moa accuracy at 100 yards. A quick-change barrel system was also required and ability to host a suppressor and operate within specific length and weight parameters. The LaRue MRGG-S was designed to meet and surpass these requirements.
