The government requires federal contractors to protect controlled unclassified information in accordance with requirements defined in NIST SP 800-171 Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations. Contractually the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) has aligned their cybersecurity practices with the current version of 800-171, Revision 2. On May 10th, the government issued the draft of Revision 3 (Rev3). Rev3 is denser than its predecessor and adds three new domains. It is better written, clearer, and often more concise; however, while the number of requirements remained the same, NIST renumbered and stacked multiple items into a single control/security requirement, resulting in what appears to be a net increase for 3rd Party assessments.
