Kit Up published some great photos contributed by the 101st Airborne unit that recently received “brand spanking new” SIG SAUER M17s (a.k.a. P320). The 101st now has a great sidearm in its inventory, but pictures reveal a disturbing weakness in its pedagogy; more specifically, proper pistol handling and basic pistol marksmanship. The two pictures below illustrate two of the more obvious problems.
Notice the operator’s grip on both of these pictures. It’s quite likely that neither one of these soldiers could achieve reasonable combat accuracy at any range. A problem which works its way into a false 9mm lethality problem.
The Army does a great job with primary weapon system training but secondary weapon proficiency needs significant improvement.

Looks like the last time they shot was with revolvers. Or, they learned by watching a 1980’s cop show on tv. Terrible.

They don’t even have the basics down. I’d be willing to bet they get less than 100 pistol rounds a year, possibly even less.
